A study of land mobile satellite service multipath effects using SATLAB software

A software package is proposed that uses the known properties of signals received in multipath environments along with the mathematical relationships between signal characteristics to explore the effects of antenna pattern, vehicle velocity, shadowing of the direct wave, distributions of scatters around the moving vehicle and levels of scattered signals on the received complex envelope, fade rates and fade duration, Doppler spectrum, signal arrival angle spectrum, and spatial correlation. The data base may be either actual measured received signals entered as ASCII flat files or data synthesized using a built in model. An example illustrates the effect of using different antennas to receive signals in the same environment.

A study of satellite motion-induced multipath phenomena

Experiments have been undertaken at COMSAT Laboratories to determine some of the propagation effects likely to be encountered by handheld satellite communications devices. L-band pilot tones aboard geosynchronous satellites at 15 and 40 deg. elevations were used to examine diurnal signal variations measured by using a hemispherical antenna. It was found that the receiver with a hemispherical antenna suffered daily peak-to-peak signal level variations of up to 12 dB compared to only 2 to 3 dB for a receiver equipped with a directional antenna. These results were highly repeatable, and extensive tests were conducted to confirm the accuracy of the data. The results suggest that the diurnal variations were due to multipath effects caused by the motion of the satellite with respect to the receiver antenna. Noting that the orbit inclinations of the satellites used in the experiment were only on the order of 2 to 3 deg., the results also suggest a potentially serious signal variation problem for low-gain antenna-based communications systems using low earth orbit satellites, since the satellite elevation angles relative to earth change far more rapidly.

GPS integrity monitoring and multipath error distributions

The ability to perform integrity monitoring of a differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) precision approach system is dependent upon the form of monitor used and the various noise sources acting on the reference station, the monitor, and the approaching aircraft. This paper focuses on how multipath and assumptions about its probability density function (pdf) affect the availability of the integrity monitoring function. Also discussed is a technique specified as code/carrier integrity monitoring which can be used to greatly improve integrity monitoring availability over methods employing conventional C/A-code operations.

Broadband Microwave Wireless Power Transfer for Weak-Signal and Multipath Environments

In this paper, we study the potential benefits of using relatively broadband wireless power transmission WPT strategies in both weak-signal and multipath environments where traditional narrowband strategies can be very inefficient. The paper is primarily a theoretical and analytical treatment of the problem that attempts to derive results that are widely applicable to many different WPT applications, including space solar power SSP.

Aircraft altitude determination using multipath information in an angle-measuring navigation satellite system

In an angle-measuring navigation satellite system using a pair of crossed interferometers located on a satellite in synchronous orbit, three parameters are needed to determine a user's position unambiguously. These are the phase differences between received signals which were transmitted by the two antennas on each of the two interferometers, and the user's altitude. The two phase difference measurements yield a line of possible user locations, and the addition of the altitude measurement reduces this line to a single point. A method is proposed which makes use of the navigation signals received after reflection off the earth's surface. The iterative procedure employs the arrival time difference between direct and reflected signals. Based on previous calculations of errors in measuring the electrical parameters it is concluded that, for North Atlantic coverage and specular reflection, altitude measurements can be made with a 1-sigma error of 65 meters.

A rough earth scattering model for multipath prediction

The most important phenomena to be considered in a model of radio wave communication between earth satellites are scattering from the surface of the earth. A model is derived and implemented on a computer to predict the field received after reflection from a rough, spherical earth. The scattering integrals are computed numerically; the domain of integration is the appropriate region on the surface of the earth. Calculations have been performed at VHF frequencies and for terrain which could be described as marshy land. Rough surface scattering calculations must be performed over a spherical earth when satellites are involved. There is a definite dependence on the values of the roughness, and the correlation length.

Anti-multipath digital signal detector

Detector operates in conjunction with radio frequency portion of receiver to detect digital signals transmitted in known modulation formats. Signal is constructed by assigning known and distinct modulation waveforms to sequence of message symbols. It reconstructs transmitted digital sequence with minimum probability that any reconstructed digit will be in error.

Satellite to aircraft multipath signals over the ocean

A satellite-to-aircraft communication link over the ocean may include a specularly reflected signal and a diffusely scattered signal, as well as the direct path transmission. A computer program is provided for estimating two statistical properties of the diffuse signal, namely the Doppler spectrum and the delay spectrum. A convenient representation of the total signal is also provided. Examples of the Doppler and delay spectra for a number of representative link geometries are given to illustrate the features of the diffuse signal.

Design and simulation of stratified probability digital receiver with application to the multipath communication

One approach to the problem of simplifying complex nonlinear filtering algorithms is through using stratified probability approximations where the continuous probability density functions of certain random variables are represented by discrete mass approximations. This technique is developed in this paper and used to simplify the filtering algorithms developed for the optimum receiver for signals corrupted by both additive and multiplicative noise.

Optimization of MLS receivers for multipath environments

Optimal design studies of MLS angle-receivers and a theoretical design-study of MLS DME-receivers are reported. The angle-receiver results include an integration of the scan data processor and tracking filter components of the optimal receiver into a unified structure. An extensive simulation study comparing the performance of the optimal and threshold receivers in a wide variety of representative dynamical interference environments was made. The optimal receiver was generally superior. A simulation of the performance of the threshold and delay-and-compare receivers in various signal environments was performed. An analysis of combined errors due to lateral reflections from vertical structures with small differential path delays, specular ground reflections with neglible differential path delays, and thermal noise in the receivers is provided.

Multipath star switch controller

Device concept permits parallel computers to scan several commonnetwork-connected data stations at maximum rate. Sequencers leap-frog to bypass ports already being serviced by another computer. Two-path system for 16-port star switch controller is cost effective if added bandwidth or increased reliability is desired. Triple-path system would be cost effective for 32-port controller.

Multipath induced errors in meteorological Doppler/interferometer location systems

One application of an RF interferometer aboard a low-orbiting spacecraft to determine the location of ground-based transmitters is in tracking high-altitude balloons for meteorological studies. A source of error in this application is reflection of the signal from the sea surface. Through propagating and signal analysis, the magnitude of the reflection-induced error in both Doppler frequency measurements and interferometer phase measurements was estimated. The theory of diffuse scattering from random surfaces was applied to obtain the power spectral density of the reflected signal. The processing of the combined direct and reflected signals was then analyzed to find the statistics of the measurement error. It was found that the error varies greatly during the satellite overpass and attains its maximum value at closest approach. The maximum values of interferometer phase error and Doppler frequency error found for the system configuration considered were comparable to thermal noise-induced error.
