In Situ Generation of High-Energy Spin-Polarized Electrons in a Beam-Driven Plasma Wakefield Accelerator

We report that in situ generation of a high-energy, high-current, spin-polarized electron beam is an outstanding scientific challenge to the development of plasma-based accelerators for high-energy colliders. In this Letter, we show how such a spin-polarized relativistic beam can be produced by ionization injection of electrons of certain atoms with a circularly polarized laser field into a beam-driven plasma wakefield accelerator, providing a much desired one-step solution to this challenge. Using time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) simulations, we show the propensity rule of spin-dependent ionization of xenon atoms can be reversed in the strong-field multiphoton regime compared with the non-adiabatic tunneling regime, leading to high total spin polarization. Furthermore, three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are incorporated with TDSE simulations, providing start-to-end simulations of spin-dependent strong-field ionization of xenon atoms and subsequent trapping, acceleration, and preservation of electron spin polarization in lithium plasma. We show the generation of a high-current (0.8 kA), ultralow-normalized-emittance (~ 37 nm ), and high-energy (2.7 GeV) electron beam within just 11 cm distance, with up to ~31% net spin polarization. Higher current, energy, and net spin-polarization beams are possible by optimizing this concept, thus solving a long-standing problem facing the development of plasma accelerators.

Direct observation of entangled electronic-nuclear wave packets

We present momentum resolved covariance measurements of entangled electronic-nuclear wave packets created and probed with octave spanning phaselocked ultrafast pulses. We launch vibrational wave packets on multiple electronic states via multiphoton absorption, and probe these wave packets via strong field double ionization using a second phaselocked pulse. Momentum resolved covariance mapping of the fragment ions highlights the nuclear motion, while measurements of the yield as a function of the relative phase between pump and probe pulses highlight the electronic coherence. The combined measurements allow us to directly visualize the entanglement between the electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom and follow the evolution of the complete wavefunction. ASMS 2024 Investigation of Uranyl Perchlorate Anion Complexes in the Gas Phase via Infrared Multiphoton Dissociation and Collision Induced Dissociation

Investigation of Uranyl Perchlorate Anion Complexes in the Gas Phase via Infrared Multiphoton Dissociation and Collision Induced Dissociation Brittany D. M. Hodges, Christopher A. Zarzana, JungSoo Kim, Jonathan Martens, and W. C. M. Berden Introduction (120 words max) Effects of electronic structure on chemical bonding and reactivity play critical roles shaping the chemical bonding and reactivity behaviors of heavy elements. Understanding the role of f electrons in bond formation between the actinide-series elements like uranium with other ligands is critical for solving technical challenges associated with these heavy elements, important to nuclear fuel cycles, efficient separations of rare earth metals, and understanding the chemistry of stored nuclear fuels and related environmental management sites. In this study, we further examine the interactions between uranyl and the perchlorate ion in order to understand the structures of these ions through the use of IRMPD. Here we report the IRMPD spectra of [UO2(ClO4)3]-, [UO3(ClO4)2]-, and a proposed transition state. Methods (120 word max) IRMPD spectra and CID spectra were acquired using a Bruker amaZon QIT/MS instrument at the Free-Electron Lasers for Infrared eXperiments (FELIX) laboratory at Radboud University. The FELIX QIT/MS is modified to allow for the high-intensity tunable IR beam from FELIX to be directed into the ion packet, resulting in multiphoton dissociation that is measured only when the IR frequency is in resonance with an adequately high absorption vibrational mode of the mass-selected complex. DFT geometry optimizations and frequency calculations using the Gaussian suite of programs were performed using B3LYP, TPSSh, and PBE0 level of theory with 6-31+G(d) basis for the O, C, H, and N atoms and the SDD basis set for U. The SDD basis set employs the Stuttgart/Dresden effective core potential. Preliminary Data or Plenary Speakers Abstract (300 words max) Metal ion clusters of uranyl perchlorate were formed via direct electrospray ionization. For each metal ligand complex of interest, the parent ion was isolated and collision induced dissociation fragmentation and Infrared Multiphoton Dissociation (IRMPD) fragmentation spectra were acquired. Results presented here are the first look at the IRMPD spectra of [UO3(ClO4)2]-, [UO2(ClO4)3]-. Structures were examined using Gaussian at different levels of theory B3LYP level of theory, TPPSh and PBE0 levels, to reflect the behaviors of uranium metal ligand complexes most accurately. In these structures, we identified an overlap between each of these uranyl stretches resulting in their largely being obscured by a perchlorate mode. The CID product spectra agree with similar structures reported by Groenewold for uranyl nitrate in 2006 (10.1021/ja058106n).

Analysis of THz generation by multicolor laser pulses with various frequency ratios

Here, terahertz (THz) generation in a gas medium is simulated by quantum calculations with multicolor intense laser pulses of various frequency ratios. By correlating THz radiation with the above-threshold-ionization photoelectron spectrum, we confirm that our previously proposed free-free transition model for the generation of THz radiation is also applicable to multicolor pulses. THz photon emissions can proceed through transitions between continuous states with similar energies that have opposite parities. This mechanism predicts that THz waves can be efficiently generated at special two-color laser frequency ratios when the multiphoton mixing condition is satisfied. Applying this model to multicolor fields (sawtooth wave shape), we provide a quantum-mechanical interpretation for the reason for THz radiation enhancement. A scheme combining multiple lasers to raise THz radiation satisfying multiphoton mixing conditions is also proposed.

Three Photon Excited Image Scanning Microscopy for in-Depth Super-Resolution Studies of Biological Samples

Multiphoton laser scanning microscopy is a powerful tool for deep imaging of thick biological samples. Image scanning microscopy (ISM) has demonstrated significant improvements in the signal-to-noise ratio in confocal laser scanning microscopy, while at the same time improving upon the effectively attainable resolution. Two-photon excitation (2PE), combined with ISM, has been shown to allow for deep tissue imaging with enhanced resolution compared to 2PE microscopy. Three-photon excitation (3PE) has enabled record imaging depth and contrast for multiphoton imaging, due to the superior suppression of out-of-focus signal generation. In this paper, we demonstrate super-resolution 3PE ISM. This is achieved using a single-photon avalanche detector array, and 1040-nm pulses for 3PE of blue fluorescence. This method enables subdiffraction limited resolution imaging of biological samples stained with blue fluorescent markers, such as mouse myocardial and spinal cord tissues stained with 4 ′ , 6 -diamidino-2-phenylindole. Deconvolution improves the resolving power further and allows for imaging with better than λ / 8 resolution with respect to the 3PE wavelength λ . With the ISM pixel reassignment procedure, we demonstrate a resolution enhancement of ∼ 1.6 laterally, compared to the resolution attained using a photomultiplier tube in a non-descanned detection arrangement, and a factor of ∼ 1.8 enhancement in axial resolution. The experimentally measured three-dimensional point spread function volume is shrunk ∼ 4.4 -fold, which is close to the theoretically expected enhancement.
