Synthesis of model sodium sulfide films

We report the direct deposition of model sodium sulfide films by RF magnetron sputtering from Na 2 S and Na 2 S 2 deposition targets. Analytical characterization and electrochemical cycling indicate that the deposited films are amorphous with stoichiometries that correspond to Na 2 S 3 and Na 2 S 2 formed from the Na 2 S and Na 2 S 2 targets, respectively. We propose that the loss of Na in the case of the Na 2 S target is due to preferential sputtering of Na resulting from the higher energy required to break the Na–S bonds in Na 2 S. Here, the development of thin film sodium sulfides opens a new route to understanding their fundamental properties, such as Na + transport, conductivity, and reactivity.

Intermetallics Based on Sodium Chalcogenides Promote Stable Electrodeposition–Electrodissolution of Sodium Metal Anodes

Sodiophilic micro-composite films of sodium-chalcogenide intermetallics (Na 2 Te and Na 2 S) and Cu particles are fabricated onto commercial copper foam current collectors (Na 2 Te@CF and Na 2 S@CF). For the first time a controllable capacity thermal infusion process is demonstrated. Enhanced wetting by the metal electrodeposition leads to state-of-the-art electrochemical performance. For example, Na 2 Te@CF-based half-cells demonstrate stable cycling at 6 mA cm -2 and 6 mAh cm -2 , corresponding to 54 µm of Na electrodeposited/electrodissolved by geometric area. Sodium metal batteries with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathodes are stable at 30C (7 mA cm -2 ) and for 10 000 cycles at 5C and 10C. Cross-sectional cryogenic focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) microscopy details deposited and remnant dissolved microstructures. Sodium metal electrodeposition onto Na 2 Te@CF is dense, smooth, and free of dendrites or pores. On unmodified copper foam, sodium grows in a filament-like manner, not requiring cycling to achieve this geometry. Substrate–metal interaction critically affects the metal–electrolyte interface, namely the thickness and morphology of the solid electrolyte interphase. Density functional theory and mesoscale simulations provide insight into support-adatom energetics, nucleation response, and early-stage morphological evolution. On Na 2 Te sodium atomic dispersion is thermodynamically more stable than isolated clusters, leading to conformal adatom coverage of the surface.

Effect of MgSO 4 addition on alkali sulphates induced hot corrosion of a β-NiAl coating

The effect of MgSO 4 addition on alkali sulphates induced hot corrosion of a β-NiAl coating was studied by performing a series of tests with deposits of Na 2 SO 4 , Na 2 SO 4 -20 %K 2 SO 4 and Na 2 SO 4 -12 %K 2 SO 4 -35 %MgSO 4 (mol.% for all) at 700 °C in air with addition of SO 2 . For elucidating the observed corrosion phenomena, various salt-oxide/NiAl powder mixtures were exposed to the same hot corrosion test conditions. Two pseudo-binary phase diagrams of the Na, K, Mg-sulphate systems were calculated using an in-house developed thermodynamic database. Addition of MgSO 4 to Na 2 SO 4 -20 %K 2 SO 4 deposit salt inhibited the hot corrosion attack during 24 h exposure, which is related to consumption of aggressive K 2 SO 4 by the formation of solid K 2 Mg 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . However, extending the exposure with Na 2 SO 4 -12 %K 2 SO 4 -35 %MgSO 4 deposit to 100 h resulted in severe corrosion attack. The latter observation is explained by a reaction between K 2 Mg 2 (SO 4 ) 3 and NiAl causing formation of a Mg, Ni and Al containing spinel accompanied by release of the aggressive K 2 SO 4 into the liquid phase.
