A fast Karhunen-Loeve transform for a class of random processes

It is shown that for a class of finite first-order Markov signals, the Karhunen-Loeve (KL) transform for data compression is a set of periodic sine functions if the boundary values of the signal are fixed or known. These sine functions are shown to be related to the Fourier transform so that a fast Fourier transform algorithm can be used to implement the KL transform. Extension to two dimensions with reference to images with separable contravariance function is shown.

A well posed boundary value problem in transonic gas dynamics

A new approach considered by Garabedian and Korn (1976) to solve a problem of airfoil design has led to a transonic boundary value problem. It remains to be shown that this problem is well posed. A description is presented of an investigation in which it is shown that a corresponding problem for the Tricomi equation is well posed. The solution to the boundary value problem is characterized, in a unique way, as a sum of two particular solutions. The Poisson formulas for the unit semicircle for the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation are considered and reflection laws for solutions of the general Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation are established. It is proved that the considered boundary value problem for the case in which the involved function is periodic and continuous is well posed within the specified class of solutions.

The enhanced nodal equilibrium ocean tide and polar motion

The tidal response of the ocean to long period forcing functions was investigated. The results indicate the possibility of excitation of a wobble component with the amplitude and frequency indicated by the data. An enhancement function for the equilibrium tide was postulated in the form of an expansion in zonal harmonics and the coefficients of such an expansion were estimated so as to obtain polar motion components of the required magnitude.

Optimal periodic binary codes of lengths 28 to 64

Results from computer searches performed to find repeated binary phase coded waveforms with optimal periodic autocorrelation functions are discussed. The best results for lengths 28 to 64 are given. The code features of major concern are where (1) the peak sidelobe in the autocorrelation function is small and (2) the sum of the squares of the sidelobes in the autocorrelation function is small.

Launch summary for 1980

Sounding rockets, artificial Earth satellites, and space probes launched betweeen January 1 and December 31, 1980 are listed. Data tabulated for the rocket launchings show launching site, instruments carried, date of launch, agency rocket identification, sponsoring country, experiment discipline, peak altitude, and the experimenter or institution responsible. Tables for satellites and space probes show COSPAR designation, spacecraft name, country, launch date, epoch date, orbit type, apoapsis, periapsis and inclination period. The functions and responsibilities of the World Data Center and the areas of scientific interest at the seven subcenters are defined. An alphabetical listing of experimenters using the sounding rockets is also provided.

Galactic gamma-ray emission from pulsars

Using data from the most recent pulsar surveys, the contribution of pulsars to the gamma-ray flux from the galactic plane is examined. The assumption is made that pulsar gamma rays are produced by curvature radiation from relativistic particles above the polar cap and attenuated by pair production in the strong magnetic and electric fields. If the assumption is made that all pulsars produce gamma rays in this way, their luminosities can be predicted as a function of period and magnetic field strength. The distribution of pulsars in the Galaxy is determined using data on 328 pulsars detected in three surveys. The Z and R distributions are found to be very sensitive to the mean electron density in the galactic plane, as are the total number and birthrate of pulsars in the Galaxy. Longitude profile of pulsar gamma-ray flux are calculated for different values of the mean electron density.

X-ray observations of X Persei

The HEAO 2 Einstein Observatory was used to confirm the identification of 4U 0352 + 30 with X Per. The HEAO 2 data were analyzed in order to determine an additional point in the pulse period history of the X-ray source and to search for short binary periods. In addition, a majority of the historical X-ray observations was reanalyzed and more refined values for the pulse period as a function of time were obtained. The period history possess significant scatter, but no evidence for a measurable long-term spin-up trend is found, and hence a lower limit to the spin-up time scale is set. This lower limit is consistent with the presence of a neutron star, but it does not rule out a degenerate dwarf. The period history was also searched for evidence of binary motion, and upper limits to a(x) sin i were obtained.

Short-term X-ray variability of the globular cluster source 4U 1820 - 30 (NGC 6624)

Analytical techniques for improved identification of the temporal and spectral variability properties of globular cluster and galactic bulge X-ray sources are described in terms of their application to a large set of observations of the source 4U 1820 - 30 in the globular cluster NGC 6624. The autocorrelation function, cross-correlations, time skewness function, erratic periodicities, and pulse trains are examined. The results are discussed in terms of current models with particular emphasis on recent accretion disk models. It is concluded that the analyzed observations provide the first evidence for shot-noise variability in a globular cluster X-ray source.

Turbine blade friction damping study

A lumped parameter method, implemented on a VAX 11/780 computer shows that the primary parameters affecting the performance of the friction damper of the first stage turbine of the SSME high pressure fuel pump are: the damper-blade coefficient of friction; the normal force applied to the friction interface; the amplitude of the periodic forcing function; the relative phase angle of the forcing functions for adjacent blades bridged by a damper (effectively, the engine order of the forcing function); and the amount of hysteretic damping that acts to limit the vibration amplitude of the blade in its resonance modes. The low order flexural resonance vibration modes of HPFTP blades without dampers, with production dampers, and with two types of lightweight experimental dampers were evaluated in high speed spin pit tests. Results agree with those of the analytical study in that blades fitted with production friction dampers experienced the airfoil-alone flexural resonance mode, while those without dampers or with lighter weight dampers did not. No blades fitted with dampers experienced the whole blade flexural resonance mode during high speed tests, while those without dampers did.

Solving Nonlinear Coupled Differential Equations

Harmonic balance method developed to obtain approximate steady-state solutions for nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations. Method usable with transfer matrices commonly used to analyze shaft systems. Solution to nonlinear equation, with periodic forcing function represented as sum of series similar to Fourier series but with form of terms suggested by equation itself.
