Analysis of scintillation light dependence on liquid Argon purity

Previous studies have investigated the correlation between impurity concentrations in Liquid Argon (LAr) and the temporal evolution of either the slow scintillation decay time or the light yield. These impurities typically consist of various molecular species. Electronegative contaminants directly affect electron drift and photon production, while other molecules, such as nitrogen (N_2),can influence LAr scintillation properties without necessarily affecting electron lifetime. Many current and future neutrino and dark-matter experiments use LAr detectors. This study aims to evaluate the measured electron lifetimes in relation to the timing characteristics of the scintillation light signal in the SBN ICARUS detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The ICARUS experiment consists of two cryostats that have shown some discrepancies in the measured electron lifetime over the years. In particular, this study addresses the use of data collected under varying purity conditions in the two cryostats.

Pair Cascades in Magnetar Magnetospheres

Resonant inverse Compton scattering (RICS) of soft thermal photons by relativistic particles on closed magnetic field loops has been proposed to explain the hard emission observed up to and beyond 200 keV from magnetars. If particles injected at the base of the loops have Lorentz factors ≳10 2 , the RICS spectra will be attenuated by both one-photon pair production and photon splitting in the ultrastrong magnetar fields, producing additional spectral components from pair synchrotron radiation and split photons that produce further generations of pairs and split photons. We investigate such cascades initiated by the primary injected electrons through a Monte Carlo simulation, and study the cascade spectra and pair distributions. For most observer angles, the pair synchrotron and split-photon spectra dominate the RICS primary spectra and produce complex polarization signals. In particular, the synchrotron spectra are highly polarized with degree 40%–80%, are softer than the RICS spectra, and may account for the high polarization of some magnetar spectra observed by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer above 3 keV.

Nanostructured Tube Wakefield Accelerator

Unprecedented $\rm TeVm^{-1}$ acceleration gradients are modeled to be realizable using a nonlinear surface crunch-in mode in nanostructured tubes. This mode is realizable using advances in nanofabrication and solid energy density attosecond bunch compression. Three dimensional computational and analytical modeling demonstrates GeV energy gain in sub-millimeter long tubes with effective wall densities $n_{\rm t}\sim10^{22-24}\rm cm^{-3}$ and hundreds of nanometer core radius when driven by submicron near solid electron beams, $n_{\rm b}\sim0.05n_{\rm t}$. Besides the many $\rm TVm^{-1}$ average gradients, strong self-focusing and nanomodulation of the beam which increases its peak density and the wakefield strength also opens up controlled high-energy photon production.

Measurement of elliptic flow of 𝐽/𝜓 in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV ⁢Au + Au collisions at forward rapidity

Here, we report the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of 𝐽/𝜓 at forward rapidity (1.2 < |𝜂| < 2.2) in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data were collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5 nb −1 . The second Fourier coefficient (𝑣 2 ) of the azimuthal distribution of 𝐽/𝜓 is determined as a function of the transverse momentum (𝑝𝑇) using the event-plane method. The measurements were performed for several selections of collision centrality: 0%–50%, 10%–60%, and 10%–40%. We find that in all cases the values of 𝑣 2 ⁡(𝑝 𝑇 ), which quantify the elliptic flow of 𝐽/𝜓, are consistent with zero. Within uncertainties, the results are consistent with measurements at midrapidity, indicating no significant elliptic flow of the 𝐽/𝜓 within the quark-gluon-plasma medium at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV.

Measurement of the production cross section of pairs of isolated photons in pp collisions at 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of prompt photon-pair production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is presented. The data were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Events with two photons in the well-instrumented region of the detector are selected. The photons are required to be isolated and have a transverse momentum of p T, γ1(2) > 40 (30) GeV for the leading (sub-leading) photon. The differential cross sections as functions of several observables for the diphoton system are measured and compared with theoretical predictions from state-of-the-art Monte Carlo and fixed-order calculations. The QCD predictions from next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations and multi-leg merged calculations are able to describe the measured integrated and differential cross sections within uncertainties, whereas lower-order calculations show significant deviations, demonstrating that higher-order perturbative QCD corrections are crucial for this process. The resummed predictions with parton showers additionally provide an excellent description of the low transverse-momentum regime of the diphoton system.

Lepton pair production through two photon process in heavy ion collisions

This paper investigates the electromagnetic production of lepton pairs with low total transverse momentum in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. First, we estimate the initial photons' transverse momentum contributions by employing models where the average transverse momentum squared of the incoming photon can be calculated in the equivalent photon approximation. We further derive an all order QED resummation for the soft photon radiation, which gives an excellent description of the ATLAS data in ultraperipheral collisions at the LHC. For peripheral and central collisions, additional pT-broadening effects from multiple interactions with the medium and the magnetic field contributions from the quark-gluon plasma are also discussed.

Completely dark photons from gravitational particle production during the inflationary era

Starting with the de Broglie-Proca Lagrangian for a massive vector field, we calculate the number density of particles resulting from gravitational particle production (GPP) during inflation, with detailed consideration to the evolution of the number density through the reheating. We find plausible scenarios for the production of dark-photon dark matter of mass in a wide range, as low as a micro-electron volt to 10 14 GeV. Gravitational particle production does not depend on any coupling of the dark photon to standard-model particles.

Infrared Photon Pair-Production in Ligand-Sensitized Lanthanide Nanocrystals

This report details spectroscopic characterizations of rare-earth, core-shell nanoparticles decorated with the f -element chelator 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO). Evidence of photon downconversion is corroborated through detailed power dependence measurements, which suggest two-photon decay paths are active in these materials, albeit only representing a minority contribution of the sum luminescence, with emission being dominated by normal, Stokes' shifted fluorescence. Specifically, ultraviolet ligand photosensitization of Nd 3+ ions in a NaGdF 4 host shell results in energy transfer to a Nd 3+ /Yb 3+ -doped NaGdF 4 nanoparticle core. The population and subsequent decay of core, Yb 3+ 2 F 5/2 states result in a spectral shift of 620 nm, manifested in a NIR emission displaying luminescence profiles diagnostic of Yb 3+ and Nd 3+ excited state decays. Emphasis is placed on the generality of this material architecture for realizing ligand-pumped, multi-photon downconversion, with the Nd 3+ /Yb 3+ system presented here functioning as a working prototype for a design principle that may be readily extended to other lanthanide pairs.

Mode-multiplexed photonic integrated vector dot-product core from inverse design

Photonic computing has the potential to harness the full degrees of freedom (DOFs) of the light field, including the wavelength, spatial mode, spatial location, phase quadrature, and polarization, to achieve a higher level of computing parallelism and scalability than digital electronic processors. While multiplexing using the wavelength and other DOFs can be readily integrated on silicon photonics platforms with compact footprints, conventional mode-division multiplexed (MDM) photonic designs occupy areas exceeding tens to hundreds of microns for a few spatial modes, significantly limiting their scalability. Here, we utilize inverse design to demonstrate an ultracompact photonic computing core that calculates vector dot products based on MDM coherent mixing. Our dot-product core integrates the functionalities of two-mode multiplexers and one multimode coherent mixer within a nominal footprint of 5 μm x 3 μm . We have experimentally demonstrated computing examples on the fabricated dot-product core, including complex number multiplication and motion estimation using optical flow. The compact dot-product core design enables large-scale on-chip integration in a parallel photonic computing primitive cluster for high-throughput scientific computing and computer vision tasks.

Shedding light on thermal photon and dilepton production

Electromagnetic radiation from the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is an important observable to be considered in heavy ion collision experiments. I will provide an update on recent advancements from perturbation theory and quenched lattice simulations. The resummed next-to-leading order (NLO) emission rate has recently been decomposed into transverse and longitudinal components, and extended to non-zero baryon chemical potential. The associated spectral function has also been tested against the Euclidean correlator, for continuum-extrapolated lattice data (at μ B = 0).

Plausible constraints and inflationary production for dark photons

Generic constraints on dark photons are generally presented assuming they have Stueckelberg masses. These constraints are strengthened if instead the mass is due to the Higgs mechanism and the dark Higgs is light. First, we show that under reasonable assumptions on the origin of kinetic mixing 𝜀 and perturbativity, the strengthened constraints on 𝜀 cannot be arbitrarily relaxed by making the Higgs heavy. Second, we demonstrate a simple mechanism for generating dark photon dark matter after inflation, where fluctuations of a dark Higgs by stochastic misalignment can produce stable dark photons through ℎ →𝐴′⁢𝐴′ decay. Third, we point out new lower bounds on 𝜀 in the case where the dark photon mediates thermal freeze-out of light dark matter by 𝑠-channel exchange, taking account of generic expectations for the size of 𝜀, and astrophysical upper bounds on the self-interaction cross section.

Observation of photon-induced W+W- production in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV using the ATLAS detector

This letter reports the observation of photon-induced production of W -boson pairs, γγ → W W . The analysis uses 139 fb -1 of LHC proton–proton collision data taken at s = 13 TeV TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment during the years 2015–2018. The measurement is performed selecting one electron and one muon, corresponding to the decay of the diboson system as W W → e ± νμ ∓ ν final state. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with a significance of well above 5 standard deviations consistent with the expectation from Monte Carlo simulation. A cross section for the γγ → W W process of 3.13 ± 0.31(stat.)±0.28(syst.) fb is measured in a fiducial volume close to the acceptance of the detector, by requiring an electron and a muon of opposite signs with large dilepton transverse momentum and exactly zero additional charged particles. This is found to be in agreement with the Standard Model prediction.

Multi-messenger heavy-ion collision physics

We report that this work studies the production of direct photons in relativistic nuclear collisions, along with the production of hadrons. Radiation from the very first instants to the final moments of the evolution is included. The hybrid model used here describes all stages of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Chronologically, those are an initial state reflecting the collision of nuclei described within the Color Glass Condensate effective theory; a pre-equilibrium phase based on non-equilibrium linear response; relativistic viscous hydrodynamics, and a hadronic afterburner. The effect of the preequilibrium phase on both photonic and hadronic observables is highlighted for the first time. The potential of photon observables - spectrum, differential elliptic and triangular flow - to reveal the chemical equilibration time is studied. Finally, we consider "small collision systems", including proton+nucleus collisions and collisions of light nuclei, as probed by hadronic and electromagnetic observables. We demonstrate how photon production can signal the formation of quark-gluon plasma in such small systems.

Search for dark photons in Higgs boson production via vector boson fusion in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for a Higgs boson that is produced via vector boson fusion and that decays to an undetected particle and an isolated photon. The search is performed by the CMS collaboration at the LHC, using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 130 fb$^{−1}$, recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016–2018. No significant excess of events above the expectation from the standard model background is found. The results are interpreted in the context of a theoretical model in which the undetected particle is a massless dark photon. An upper limit is set on the product of the cross section for production via vector boson fusion and the branching fraction for such a Higgs boson decay, as a function of the Higgs boson mass. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, assuming the standard model production rates, the observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction is 3.5 (2.8)%. This is the first search for such decays in the vector boson fusion channel. Combination with a previous search for Higgs bosons produced in association with a Z boson results in an observed (expected) upper limit on the branching fraction of 2.9 (2.1)% at 95% confidence level.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Gravitational production of completely dark photons with nonminimal couplings to gravity

Dark photons are a theorized massive spin-1 particle which can be produced via various mechanisms, including cosmological gravitational particle production (GPP) in the early universe. In this work, we extend previous results for GPP of dark photons to include nonminimal couplings to gravity. We find that nonminimal couplings can induce a ghost instability or lead to runaway particle production at high momentum and discuss the constraints on the parameter space such that the theory is free of instabilities. Within the instability-free regime we numerically calculate the particle production and find that the inclusion of nonminimal couplings can lead to an enhancement of the particle number. As a result, GPP of nonminimally coupled dark photons can open the parameter space for production of a cosmological relevant relic density (constituting all or part of the dark matter) as compared to the minimally-coupled theory. These results are independent of the choice of inflation model, which we demonstrate by repeating the analysis for a class of rapid-turn multi-field inflation models.

Longitudinal double helicity asymmetry $A_{LL}$ from direct photon, jet and charged pion production in polarized $\vec{p}+\vec{p}$ collisions

Understanding the proton spin composition from the quarks and gluons spin polarization and their motion is important to test various kinds of sum rules and nonperturbative properties of hadrons. At the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), we collide longitudinally polarized proton beams and measure the double helicity asymmetry A_{LL} A L L , which is an important physical quantity for extracting the polarized parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. Direct photon, jet and charged pion production are good channels to probe the gluon spin polarization inside the proton, with the ability to probe also the sign of the gluon spin. Direct photon production is the theoretically ``cleanest’’ channel, with little fragmentation contribution, but limited by statistics. On the other hand, jet and charged pion production have more statistics, but include more hard processes and hadronization effects. I will present the recent measurements of direct photon, jet and charged pion A_{LL} A L L s at PHENIX and show their complementary roles in extracting the gluon spin.
