Static and Dynamic Gradient Based Directional Transportation of Neutral Molecules in Swollen Polymer Films

Abstract Materials which selectively transport molecules offer powerful opportunities for concentrating and separating chemical agents. Here, utilizing static and dynamic chemical gradients, transport of molecules within swollen crosslinked polymers is demonstrated. Using an ≈200 μm static hydroxyl to hexyl gradient, the neutral ambipolar nerve agent surrogate diethyl (cyanomethyl)phosphonate (DECP) is directionally transported and concentrated 60‐fold within 4 hours. To accelerate transport kinetics, a dynamic gradient (a “travelling wave”) is utilized. Here, the non‐polar dye pyrene was transported. The dynamic gradient is generated by an ion exchange process triggered by the localized introduction of an aqueous NaCl solution, which converts the gel from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. As the hydrophilic region expands, associated water enters the gel, and pyrene is pushed ahead of the expansion front. The dynamic gradient provides about 10‐fold faster transport kinetics than the static gradient.

Improving molecular alignment and charge percolation in semiconducting polymer films with highly localized electronic states through tailored thermal annealing

Here, we have recently developed a strategy to improve charge percolation efficiency in a renowned family of naphthalene-diimide bithiophene (PNDI-T2) copolymers, based on the application of a tailored thermal treatment on pre-aligned films. Here we show that the accurate choice of thermal post-processing temperatures can induce a notable lamellar thickening and an improvement of molecular alignment, the latter being favored by alkyl chains with longer branches. Correspondingly, enhanced transport properties are observed. Interestingly, these are found to be independent of lamellar thickness. In fact, within this family of molecules, characterized by a locked non-planar conformation and strong intramolecular charge localization, the orientational order within charge percolation paths was found to be the only factor dictating charge transport.

Determination of mechanical properties of polymer film materials

Five polymeric film materials, Tedlar, Teflon, Kapton H, Kapton F, and a fiberglass reinforced polyimide, PG-402, in thickness ranging from 0.002 to 0.005 inch, were tested over a temperature range of -195 to 200 C in the "machine" and transverse direction to determine: elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, three percent offset yield stress, fracture stress, and strain to fracture. The elastic modulus, yield stress and fracture stress decreased with increasing temperature for all the materials while the fracture strain increased. Teflon and Tedlar had the greatest temperature dependence and PG-402 the least. At 200 C the Poisson ratio values ranged from 0.39 to 0.5; they diminished as the temperature decreased covering a range of 0.26 to 0.42 at -195 C. Shortening the gauge length from eight inches to one inch increased the strain to fracture and lowered the elastic modulus values.

Development and evaluation of polyvinyl-alcohol blend polymer films as battery separators

Several dialdehydes and epoxies were evaluated for their suitability as cross-linkers. Optium concentrations of several cross-linking reagents were determined. A two-step method of cross-linking, which involves treatment of the film in an acid or acid periodate bath, was investigated and dropped in favor of a one-step method in which the acid catalyst, which initiates cross-linking, is added to the PVA - cross-linker solution before casting. The cross-linking was thus achieved during the drying step. This one-step method was much more adaptable to commercial processing. Cross-linked films were characterized as alkaline battery separators. Films were prepared in the lab and tested in cells in order to evaluate the effect of film composition and a number of processing parameters on cell performance. These tests were conducted in order to provide a broader data base from which to select optimum processing parameters. Results of the separator screening tests and the cell tests are discussed.

Electrostatic forming and testing of polymer films on a 16-foot diameter test fixture

The large space systems technology program investigated different forms of large, lightweight, deployable structures which could be carried on the Space Shuttle. Different forms and concepts of antennas as a type of large space system were investigated. The electrostatically controlled membrane reflector made of metallized material concept was chosen. The concept is a good candidate for creating an antenna with high surface quality and has the ability to be packaged and deployed from the Shuttle with a significant reduction in weight compared to other antenna types.

Polarized polymer films as electronic pulse detectors of cosmic dust particles

A new type of dust particle detector has been developed which consists of a polarized film of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) having conducting electrons on its surface and operating with no bias voltage. Here, the response characteristics of PVDF detectors with areas in the range 4-150 sq cm and thickness in the range 2-28 microns to iron particles accelerated to velocities in the range 1-12 km/s are reported. The discussion also covers the mechanism of detection, fast pulse response, noise characteristics, and the dependence of the detector signal amplitude on particle mass and velocity. The detectors exhibit long-term stability and can be operated for extended periods of time over the temperature range -50 to +50 C; their response to dust particle impacts is unaffected by high background fluxes of charged particles.
