Photo-Crosslinkable Naphthalene Diimide Polymer for Solution-Processed n – i – p Perovskite Solar Cells

We copolymerize a norbornene monomer bearing a pendant naphthalene diimide with a norbornene bearing a cinnamate pendant moiety to synthesize a crosslinkable electron-transporting polymer and study its use in solution-processed n–i–p perovskite solar cells. The crosslinked material exhibits over 90% transparency in the visible region and higher thermal stability (>300 °C) and lower surface energy than the corresponding homopolymer of the naphthalene diimide functionalized norbornene. Coating an ITO surface with the photo-crosslinked copolymer yields a slightly lower work function than homopolymer-coated ITO. We show that the morphologies of the perovskite films deposited on both polymers are similar (~300 nm features) based upon scanning electron microscopy. Our solar-cell device results show that the crosslinked naphthalene diimide polymer gives a higher open-circuit voltage (1.08 vs 1.05 V), fill factor (average 64.43 vs 58.77%), and stabilized power conversion efficiency (12.28 vs 10.33%) compared to its non-crosslinked homopolymer counterpart, as well as reduced hysteresis. As a result, we attribute the improved performance to decreased work function, reduced nonradiative recombination, and higher shunt resistance.

Additive manufacturing of power poles using bamboo-polymer composites: A quick solution for power grid restoration

Polymer additive manufacturing (AM) technology is rapidly growing and its transition to become an advanced manufacturing technique now offers possibilities for unconventional applications. One of these potential applications is on site additive manufacturing of power poles. During natural incidents such as storms and hurricanes, power lines can be severely damaged and there may not be sufficient spare power poles to replace. In such situations, additive manufacturing of power poles on site can offer a fast, temporary solution during emergencies. The ability of freeform manufacturing of parts with complex geometries makes large scale AM attractive for various applications; however, due to residual stress build up and need for different mechanical requirements for different applications, reinforcement of the AM feedstock is necessary. In addition to carbon and glass fibers, bio-derived fibers can also be used as a reinforcing phase, both to utilize the natural resources at the emergency area and in terms of long-term sustainability. In this project, design and additive manufacturing of a 13.1 m power pole was demonstrated. Three different feedstock material options (polystyrene, cellulose ester and polycarbonate reinforced with glass and bamboo fibers) and two different pole designs were investigated. As-printed part tensile properties both in printing and interlayer directions were measured and a power pole was printed as six pieces and put together successfully. Finally, a conceptual design of a portable power pole manufacturing approach was proposed.

Fabrication of Piezoelectric Polymer and Metal–Organic Framework Composite Thin Films Using Solution Shearing

Polymer-metal–organic framework (polymer-MOF) composites have garnered significant interest as polymers can enhance the processability and industrial applicability of MOFs. Thin films of these composites are particularly attractive for applications in sensing, separations, and flexible electronics. Solution shearing, a meniscus-guided coating technique, has emerged as a scalable process for fabricating thin films of MOFs, and can produce large-area films within minutes. In this study, we utilized solution shearing to fabricate composite thin films of a MOF UiO-66 and a piezoelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)), investigating how polymer concentration during MOF synthesis and composite formation influences thin film properties, including crystallinity, surface coverage, and piezoelectric performance. Additionally, solid-state NMR spectroscopy was utilized to probe the interactions between P(VDF-TrFE) and UiO-66 in the composite. Evidence from solid-state NMR indicated polymer-MOF interactions, suggesting that the polymer strands are in close proximity to the UiO-66 pores, supporting a mixed surface coating and pore infiltration model. Furthermore, incorporating P(VDF-TrFE) enhanced the film’s areal coverage from 70% to 100%. While the thermal conductivity remained essentially unchanged, the composite film showed an improved piezoelectric effect. The composite with 91 wt % P(VDF-TrFE) exhibited the highest output voltage of 9.1 V and a sensitivity of 0.26 V/N under applied pressure. This work demonstrates the potential of solution shearing as a scalable technique for fabricating polymer-MOF composite thin films.

Subtle Molecular Changes Largely Modulate Chiral Helical Assemblies of Achiral Conjugated Polymers by Tuning Solution-State Aggregation

Understanding the solution-state aggregate structure and the consequent hierarchical assembly of conjugated polymers is crucial for controlling multiscale morphologies during solid thin-film deposition and the resultant electronic properties. However, it remains challenging to comprehend detailed solution aggregate structures of conjugated polymers, let alone their chiral assembly due to the complex aggregation behavior. Herein, we present solution-state aggregate structures and their impact on hierarchical chiral helical assembly using an achiral diketopyrrolopyrrole-quaterthiophene (DPP-T4) copolymer and its two close structural analogues wherein the bithiophene is functionalized with methyl groups (DPP-T2M2) or fluorine atoms (DPP-T2F2). Combining in-depth small-angle X-ray scattering analysis with various microscopic solution imaging techniques, we find distinct aggregate in each DPP solution: (i) semicrystalline 1D fiber aggregates of DPP-T2F2 with a strongly bound internal structure, (ii) semicrystalline 1D fiber aggregates of DPP-T2M2 with a weakly bound internal structure, and (iii) highly crystalline 2D sheet aggregates of DPP-T4. These nanoscopic aggregates develop into lyotropic chiral helical liquid crystal (LC) mesophases at high solution concentrations. Intriguingly, the dimensionality of solution aggregates largely modulates hierarchical chiral helical pitches across nanoscopic to micrometer scales, with the more rigid 2D sheet aggregate of DPP-T4 creating much larger pitch length than the more flexible 1D fiber aggregates. Combining relatively small helical pitch with long-range order, the striped twist-bent mesophase of DPP-T2F2 composed of highly ordered, more rigid 1D fiber aggregate exhibits an anisotropic dissymmetry factor (g-factor) as high as 0.09. This study can be a prominent addition to our knowledge on a solution-state hierarchical assembly of conjugated polymers and, in particular, chiral helical assembly of achiral organic semiconductors that can catalyze an emerging field of chiral (opto)electronics.

Fundamental Structure/Property Studies of Gas Separation Membrane Polymers

Solution-processable polybenzimidazoles (PBIs) present opportunities for new gas separation membranes. We plan to develop systematic structure/property relations for this relatively new class of membrane materials. The fundamental questions we will address are: (1) How do chemical structure modifications of PBIs influence their gas solubility, diffusivity and permeability properties for a systematic series of gases? (2) Is the separation performance of PBIs affected by plasticization under operating conditions that are relevant to, for example, natural gas purification or olefin/paraffin separation and, if so, can this family of materials be tuned structurally to minimize deleterious effects of plasticization on separation properties? (3) What is the effect of water vapor on PBI separation performance? (4) What is the influence of physical aging on permeation properties of thin (i.e., <1 µm) PBI polymer films, and how does the rate of physical aging relate to polymer chemical structure? The primary focus of this research program is to develop a fundamental, molecular-based mechanistic understanding of the influence of chemical structure on the gas transport properties of PBIs and to establish structure/property relationships for this unique platform of materials.

Topology-Dependent Polymer Stretching and Scission in Solution at Extreme Shear Rates

There has been significant interest in the engineering of polymer topology to control rheology and mechanical stability in dilute solutions for applications involving extreme shear rate flows. However, methods to experimentally probe properties at relevant shear rates (≈ 10 4 –10 6 s –1 ) have remained ex situ, obscuring access to measures of polymer deformation and rheology that would otherwise provide mechanistic insight into the topology-dependent properties that control their behavior in extreme shear flows. In this study, we used novel in situ small angle neutron scattering measurements in a capillary rheometer (capillary rheo-SANS) to simultaneously measure solution viscosities and polymer deformations in high shear on a series of chemically homologous topology-defined polymers including linear, randomly branched, and star-shaped molecules. We demonstrate that differences in the onset of chain stretching and shear thinning of these polymers in dilute solution are controlled primarily by differences in their molecular relaxation time. These differences correlate with differences in chain scission inferred from ex situ measurements at more extreme shear rates. Together, the results demonstrate a direct coupling between chain deformation and scission, and suggest that the dominant effect of branching as a means to impart resilience against mechanical degradation is through differences in relaxation dynamics due to branching. We anticipate that these results will provide key insights to engineer topology-controlled polymers for rheological modification, mechanical stability, and controlled mechano-chemistry.

Layer-by-Layer-Processed Organic Solar Cells with 18.02% Efficiency Enabled by Regulating the Aggregation of Bottom Polymers

The fabrication of organic solar cells (OSCs) by a layer-by-layer (LBL) method has attracted growing attention in recent years. As already known, the pre-aggregates of conjugated polymers in solution have a profound impact on their microstructure morphology in films. Herein, by simply controlling the solution temperature and annealing processes, the pre-aggregation behavior of D18 polymer in solution can be fine-tuned and the microstructure of D18 bottom layer is well manipulated. The optimized D18 bottom layer can effectively regulate L8-BO upper-layer-forming suitable networks for efficient charge transportation. In addition, a vertical phase separation with a special D/D:A/A structure (P-i-N-type component distribution) is also formed. As a result, compared to the 16.43% power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the bulk heterojunction devices, such control enables bilayer OSC devices based on the polymer D18 and L8-BO to deliver an enhanced PCE of 18.02% with simultaneously improved short-circuit current density, open-circuit voltage, and fill factor. Importantly, it is also demonstrated in these results that the LBL deposition process utilizing the pre-aggregation of polymer and its fiber-network-forming ability is a very promising approach to improve charge dynamics, suppress carrier recombination, and fabricate highly efficient OSCs.

Polyferrocenylsilane Semicrystalline Polymer Additive for Solution-Processed p-Channel Organic Thin Film Transistors

In this study, we demonstrated for the first time that a metal-containing semicrystalline polymer was used as an additive to mediate the thin film morphology of solution-grown, small-molecule organic semiconductors. By mixing polyferrocenylsilane (PFS) with an extensively-studied organic semiconductor 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS pentacene), PFS as a semicrystalline polymer independently forms nucleation and crystallization while simultaneously ameliorating diffusivity of the blend system and tuning the surface energies as a result of its partially amorphous property. We discovered that the resultant blend film exhibited a 6-fold reduction in crystal misorientation angle and a 3-fold enlargement in average grain width. Enhanced crystal orientation considerably reduces mobility variation, while minimized defects and trap centers located at grain boundaries lessen the adverse impact on the charge transport. Consequently, bottom-gate, top-contact organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) based on the TIPS pentacene/PFS mixture yielded a 40% increase in performance consistency (represented by the ratio of average mobility to the standard deviation of mobility). The PFS semicrystalline polymer-controlled crystallization can be used to regulate the thin film morphology of other high-performance organic semiconductors and shed light on applications in organic electronic devices.

Probing Clustering Dynamics between Silicon and PAA or LiPAA Slurries under Processing Conditions

This work explores the complex interplay between slurry aggregation, agglomeration, and conformation (i.e., shape) of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)- and lithiated PAA-based silicon slurries as a function of the shear rate and the resulting slurry homogeneity. These values were measured by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and rheology-coupled ultra-SANS at conditions relevant to battery electrode casting. Different binder solution preparation methods, either a ball milling (BM) process or a planetary centrifugal mixing (PCM) process, dramatically modify the resulting polymer dynamics and organization around a silicon material. This is due to the different energy profiles of mixing where the more violent and higher energy PCM causes extensive breakdown and reformation of the binder, which is now likely in a branched conformation, while the lower energy BM results in simply lower-molecular weight linear polymers. In conclusion, the breakdown and reorganization of the polymer structure affect silicon slurry homogeneity, which affects subsequent electrode architecture.

Bayesian estimations of orientation distribution functions from small-angle scattering enable direct prediction of mechanical stress in anisotropic materials

Properties of soft materials are influenced by their anisotropic structuring under nonequilibrium fields. Although anisotropic structure-property relationships have been extensively explored theoretically, comparison to experiments requires determination of the microstructural orientation probability distribution function (OPDF) of microstructural elements. Small angle scattering (SAS) measurements encode information about the OPDF, but tools to navigate this connection are incomplete. Here, we develop and validate an explicit framework to link arbitrary OPDFs to SAS measurements. Specifically, we propose, validate, and apply a method, maximum a posteriori scattering inference (MAPSI), whereby the OPDF may be obtained from SAS measurements using a Bayesian estimation method. Using this method, we obtain estimates of the full 3D OPDF for two model semidilute fd-virus (rodlike) dispersions at concentrations that are approximately equal to and twice the overlap concentration. From the OPDF, we calculate its second and fourth moments and compare these to predictions for a dilute suspension of rigid rods and to a recent theory for semidilute suspensions. Finally, we use both the theoretical and measured moments to calculate the stress, both for dilute and semidilute suspensions. These predictions are not only compared to each other, but also to measured values of the shear stress, and point to new insights into the behavior of suspensions of highly elongated particles in the transition between dilute and semidilute behavior. We also use this new framework to provide perspective on the connection between scalar parameterizations of scattering and the OPDF that have frequently been used in the past. Here, the new tools developed in this work provide an unprecedented path toward experimental validation of dynamical theories of rodlike colloids and polymers, and for measurement of nonequilibrium structures and stresses of other complex fluids and soft materials with SAS.

Solid Electrolytes for Li–S Batteries: Solid Solutions of Poly(ethylene oxide) with Li x PON- and Li x SiPON-Based Polymers

We report here efforts to synthesize free-standing, dry polymer electrolytes that exhibit superior ionic conductivities at ambient for Li–S batteries. Co-dissolution of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) (M n 900k) with Li x PON and Li x SiPON polymer systems at a ratio of approximately 3:2 followed by casting provides transparent, solid-solution films 25–50 μm thick, lowering PEO crystallinity, and providing measured impedance values of 0.1–2.8 × 10 –3 S/cm at ambient. These values are much higher than simple PEO/Li + salt systems. These solid-solution polymer electrolytes (PEs) are (1) thermally stable to 100 °C; (2) offer activation energies of 0.2–0.5 eV; (3) suppress dendrite formation; and (4) enable the use of lithium anodes at current densities as high as 3.5 mAh/cm 2 . Here, galvanostatic cycling of SPAN/PEs/Li cell (SPAN = sulfurized, carbonized polyacrylonitrile) shows discharge capacities of 1000 mAh/g sulfur at 0.25C and 800 mAh/g sulfur at 1C with high coulumbic efficiency over 100 cycles.

Investigation of chemical stabilities and contact angle of 3D printed polymers with CO 2 capture solvents to enhance absorber performance

Increasing absorption rate in aqueous amine CCS systems is one avenue to decrease capital cost by reducing the overall size of the absorber column. One potential route is by replacing conventional steel packing with custom designed packing made from 3D printed polymers. 3D printing offers endless flexibility in packing designs to better enhance liquid/gas contact, increase CO 2 mass transfer and create compact absorber columns. Additionally, before exploring novel packing designs, it is necessary to identify polymer materials that can be 3D printed while also showing long-term physical and surface property stability upon exposure to corrosive amine solutions. Four polymers that are commonly used for 3D printing were evaluated using CO 2 -loaded amine solution at temperatures typically observed in the absorber column. Three polymers, high-density polystyrene (HDPS), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and nylon were found to be physically stable after 5000 hr of amine exposure at temperatures up to 60 °C. The contact angle (wetting) of water and CO 2 -loaded aqueous amine solution on the polymer surfaces were also stable after exposure to the CO2-loaded amine solution.
