Optical follow-up observation for GW event S190510g using Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam

Abstract A gravitational wave event, S190510g, which was classified as a binary-neutron-star coalescence at the time of preliminary alert, was detected by LIGO/Virgo collaboration on 2019 May 10. At 1.7 hours after the issue of its preliminary alert, we started a target-of-opportunity imaging observation in the Y band to search for its optical counterpart using the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on the Subaru Telescope. The observation covers a 118.8 deg2 sky area corresponding to $11.6\%$ confidence in the localization skymap released in the preliminary alert and $1.2\%$ in the updated skymap. We divided the observed area into two fields based on the availability of HSC reference images. For the fields with the HSC reference images, we applied an image subtraction technique; for the fields without the HSC reference images, we sought individual HSC images by matching a catalog of observed objects with the PS1 catalog. The search depth is 22.28 mag in the former method and the limit of search depth is 21.3 mag in the latter method. Subsequently, we performed visual inspection and obtained 83 candidates using the former method and 50 candidates using the latter method. Since we only have the one-day photometric data, we evaluated the probability of candidates being located inside the 3D skymap by estimating their distances with photometry of associated extended objects. We found three candidates are likely located inside the 3D skymap and concluded they could be a counterpart of S190510g, while most of the 133 candidates were likely to be supernovae because the number density of candidates was consistent with the expected number of supernova detections. By comparing our observational depth with a light-curve model of such a kilonova reproducing AT2017gfo, we show that early deep observations with the Subaru/HSC can capture the rising phase of the blue component of a kilonova at the estimated distance of S190510g (∼230 Mpc).

Core Physics Characteristics of Extended Enrichment and High Burnup Boiling Water Reactor Fuel

This paper presents the highlights of boiling water reactor (BWR) core physics studies performed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as part of a series of studies conducted to compare low-enriched uranium (LEU) with LEU+ fuel. The studies analyzed isotopic fuel content, lattice parameters (Phase 1), and core physics (Phase 2) to identify challenges in operation, storage, and transportation for BWRs and pressurized water reactors (PWRs). Because of a lack of publicly available lattice and core designs for modern BWR fuel assemblies and reactor cores, several optimized lattice designs were generated, and different core loading strategies were investigated. Twelve optimized lattice designs with 235 U enrichments ranging from 1.6% to 9% and gadolinia loadings ranging from 3 to 8 wt% were used to model axial enrichment and geometry variations in fuel assemblies for core designs. Each core shares a common set of approximations in design and analysis to allow for consistent comparisons between LEU and LEU+ fuel. The objective is to highlight anticipated changes in core behavior with respect to the reference LEU core. The results of this study show that the differences in LEU and LEU+ core reactor physics characteristics are less significant than the differences in lattice physics characteristics reported in the Phase 1 studies.

Development of a Robust Reference Electrode in Aggressive Chemical and Radiation Environments in the Hanford Waste Tanks

The Hanford site stores more than 200 million liters of radioactive and chemically hazardous wastes from the production of weapons materials. The wastes are stored in 177 underground carbon-steel storage tanks, separated between 149 single shell tanks (SSTs) and 28 double shell tanks (DSTs). The DSTs provide critical retrieval and interim storage before the waste is vitrified in the Waste Treatment and Isolation Plant (WTP). The tanks will need to remain in-service far beyond the initial 40-year design life, and effective corrosion control practices must remain in force to extend the tanks’ lifespans. This effort includes direct measurements of corrosion rate (e.g., ultrasonic measurements and corrosion coupons) and electrochemical processes (e.g., linear polarization measurements and open circuit potential measurements). The Hanford site began monitoring the corrosion potential in select DSTs in 2008. Of the 45 reference electrodes that have been installed, 29 have failed and 6 others provided unreliable results. DOE-EM is supporting a 3-year program to develop a chemical and radiation resistant reference electrode for application in the Hanford tanks. The first year of the program focused on understanding the failure mechanism for the reference electrodes and identification of candidate construction materials that would mitigate degradation of the electrodes in the waste environment. During the second year of the program, the objectives were to: 1) test candidate materials under simulated waste conditions, 2) design components that will extend the service life of the electrode, 3) fabricate materials for prototype reference electrodes, and 4) assemble prototype reference electrodes for accelerated testing. The reference electrode is constructed of four principal parts: 1) junction, 2) casing, 3) inner chamber backfill materials, and 4) the sensing wire. Principally, improvements of the junction, casing, and inner chamber backfill materials are being pursued. The junction material at the interface between the waste and the inner chamber of the reference electrode was identified as a critical component in the failure of the reference electrodes. Nine candidate replacement junction materials were tested under simulated waste conditions to evaluate permeation rate. These materials included a variety of polymeric and ceramic materials, some of which were 3-D printed. Thus far, porous polyvinylidene fluoride materials have performed satisfactorily and are being considered for prototype development. The commercial electrode casing materials in general have performed well. Additionally, 3-D printing of chemically and mechanically stable materials is being investigated as a means for further improvement in fabrication consistency. SRNL has also investigated altering the reference electrode design to extend the service life. The new design of the interior of the reference electrode casing creates a longer, more tortuous path between the junction material and the electrode sensing wire. A finite element model was used to optimize the design without adversely impacting the circuit resistance of the electrode during the measurements, thus preserving the measurement accuracy while enhancing the service life. The inner chamber back fill materials are also critical to the performance of the reference electrode. Materials that are resistant to intruding tank waste and provide a conductive path to the sensing wire were investigated. Gel and powder materials that are interspersed with a conductive chloride bearing material were tested for their influence on diffusion and electrode resistance. All the investigated materials and components will be assembled, with collaboration from commercial vendors, to fabricate the initial prototypes. Accelerated testing of the prototypes will be initiated in Year 2 of the program and will be completed in Year 3. A recommendation on the materials of construction and the design of the new robust reference electrode will be presented to the Hanford tank farm facility.

Wind Turbine Design Optimization for Hydrogen Production

To help meet the need for inexpensive green fuels, we are working on wind turbine design optimization specifically for hydrogen production. We have thus far achieved a 1.53% decrease in LCOH as compared to a turbine optimized for LCOE using the same code, design variables, and models. We accomplished this by optimizing some components of the wind turbine tower, rotor, and drivetrain design with hydrogen production and costs in the design loop.

5.1.6 Demo #6: NanoStitch (NAWAStitch) Multifunctional Composites Trade Validation

The overall objective of the NanoStitch Multifunctional Composites Trade Validation Demonstration project was to determine the value proposition of adding NanoStitch to rapid-cure composite systems for structures used in the expanding sector of advanced air mobility (AAM) and specifically electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The expected value proposition was stronger composite parts, with new multifunctional attributes, that are lower cost to fabricate and maintain. NanoStitch is a new composite innovation where a contiguous vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) forest is located between each ply of a laminate composite resulting in improved mechanical properties as well as other multifunctional properties such as enhanced thermal and electrical conductivity. NanoStitch was originally distributed by N12, later acquired by NAWA Technologies, now called NAWAStitch, and henceforth referred to in this document as NAWAStitch. Two significant evaluations were framed to help meet the overall objective. First, was Task 1 to evaluate the effects that adding NAWAStitch to a rapid cure material system would have on the mechanical and processing properties of the material. Second, was Task 2 to evaluate the workability of adding NAWAStitch to practical flight demonstration articles. From previous research, it was already known that the application of NAWAStitch to a composite structure can enhance the mechanical properties of that structure. However, this project will help the engineering community understand those benefits and the basic structural strength values to apply when incorporating NAWAStitch material into composite structure that utilizes a rapid-cure resin system, which is novel. Testing showed that by adding NAWAStitch to the prepreg, most material properties were improved because the VACNTs strengthened the resin to fiber interface, and the interface itself, between plies. For example compression strength improved by more than 20%, and erosion resistance by more than 50%. The UDRI team identified two flight demonstration articles through discussions with Aurora Flight Sciences (Aurora) and reviewing literature on air mobility and the eVTOL market. The demonstration articles were a thin skin honeycomb panel and a section from an eVTOL propeller blade. The manufacturing and testing trials of the demonstration articles were as follows: • NAWAStitch added no manufacturing complexity or detriment to the article physical qualities, while at the same time added multifunctional properties such as enhanced rain erosion and electrothermal de-icing besides enhanced mechanical properties • VACNTs did not increase or hurt the mechanical properties of the interface between honeycomb core materials and the thin skin face sheet • Demonstrated successful de-icing function in an eVTOL propeller meeting real-world specifications in uniformity and endurance • Multifunctional eVTOL propeller cost analysis showed a cost savings of at least 67 % for a single propeller blade with multifunctional de-icing capability and improved mechanical properties which equates to a potential savings of $10,116 per eVTOL aircraft with six three-bladed propellers Overall, the results of this project can provide additional tools for the composite industry to optimize energy efficiency through faster and stronger composite parts that are lower cost to fabricate and maintain. Additionally, the results of this effort can help US industry like NAWA America set the stage for rapid growth and establishment of a manufacturing facility in Ohio. The project has given NAWA America the basic understanding of how the addition of VACNTs to a composite structure can affect the mechanical properties and hence point them to potential commercial applications. The project has also provided Teijin Carbon US with another potential material application for their rapid cure materials that are manufactured at the Renegade facility in Miamisburg, OH.

Distributed model predictive control for coordinated, grid-interactive buildings

Continued focus on reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency requires buildings to become grid-interactive and not just behave as static consumers. A distributed model predictive control (DMPC) algorithm known as Limited-Communication (LC) DMPC is modified to enable grid-interactive buildings. A grid-aggregator subsystem is added that allows for a bulk grid power reference signal to be followed while the individual building subsystems also achieve their local comfort objectives. The LC-DMPC algorithm is applied for the first time to systems with multiple buildings. Adequate power tracking is shown for different simulation scenarios involving heterogeneous buildings, and next steps are discussed.

Unleashing the full power of LHCb to probe stealth new physics

In this paper, we describe the potential of the LHCb experiment to detect stealth physics. This refers to dynamics beyond the standard model that would elude searches that focus on energetic objects or precision measurements of known processes. Stealth signatures include long-lived particles and light resonances that are produced very rarely or together with overwhelming backgrounds. We will discuss why LHCb is equipped to discover this kind of physics at the Large Hadron Collider and provide examples of well-motivated theoretical models that can be probed with great detail at the experiment.

Machine learning enhanced characterization and optimization of photonic cured MAPbI 3 for efficient perovskite solar cells

Photonic curing (PC) can facilitate high-speed perovskite solar cell (PSC) manufacturing because it uses high-intensity light pulses to crystallize perovskite films in milliseconds. However, optimizing PC conditions is challenging due to its many variables, and using power conversion efficiency (PCE) as the optimization metric is both time-consuming and labor-intensive. This work presents a machine learning (ML) approach to optimize PC conditions for fabricating methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) films by quantitatively comparing their ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorbance spectra to thermal annealed (TA) films using four similarity metrics. We perform Bayesian optimization coupled with Gaussian process regression (BO-GP) to minimize the similarity metrics. Refining PC conditions using active learning based on BO-GP models, we achieve a PC MAPbI3 film with an absorbance spectrum closely matching a TA reference film, which is further verified by its crystalline and morphological properties. Thus, we demonstrate that the UV-vis absorption spectrum can accurately proxy film quality. Additionally, we use an AI-based segmentation model for a more efficient grain size analysis. However, when we use the optimized PC condition to fabricate PSCs, we find that interaction between MAPbI 3 and the hole transport layer (HTL) during PC critically degrades the PSC performance. By adding a buffer layer between the HTL and MAPbI 3 , the optimized PC PSCs produce a champion PCE of 11.8%, comparable to the TA reference of 11.7%. Using UV-vis similarity metrics instead of device PCE as the objective in our BO-GP method accelerates the optimization of PC processing conditions for MAPbI 3 films.

KOMPASS: Compaction of crushed salt for the safe containment

In Germany, rock salt formations are a possible host rock taken into account for the safe disposal of heat-emitting radioactive waste. With respect to crushed salt will be used in the repository for backfilling of open cavitied (using dry material). With time, the crushed salt will be compacted by the convergence of the host rock and reaches porosities comparable with the rock salts. The compaction behaviour of crushed salt has been investigated within the last 40 years, however, its behaviour at low porosities and the resulting low permeabilities becomes relevant with the introduction of the approach of the containment providing rock zone. In the current state, the database and process understanding have some important gaps in knowledge referring the material behaviour, existing laboratory and numerical models, especially for the porosity range. The objective of this project was the development of methods and strategies for the reduction of deficits in the prediction of crushed salt compaction leading to an improvement of the prognosis quality. It includes the development of experimental methods for determining crushed salt properties in the range of low porosities, the enhancement of process understanding and the investigation and development of existing numerical models.
