Corrosion of SS 316, Inconel 617, Inconel 625 in molten chloride salt with emphasis on the speciation of Cr, Ni, and Co in molten salt matrix by XAFS

Dr. Hartmann’ report summarizes the corrosion behavior of materials used in the construction and operation of molten salt reactors which is is of great interest to the molten salt reactor (MSR) community. In the present study we intent to decipher the very elemental phenomena on the corrosion of austenitic chromium-containing stainless steel SS316, as well as Inconel 625 and ASME-coded high temperature Alloy (Inconel) 617. We initiated and are in continuation of conducting ampoule type corrosion testing at 550 °C and 650 °C to determine chromium diffusivity and the related activation energy as well as the speciation of the corrosion products.

Methods of improving drought and salt resistance in a plant and genetically engineered plants with improved drought and salt resistance

The present disclosure provides methods for increasing drought resistance, salt resistance, and biomass production of a plant. The methods encompass expression of DiGeorge-Syndrome Critical Region 14 (DGCR14) gene in the plant. In comparison to a plant not manipulated in this manner, the disclosed, genetically-modified, plants display improved drought resistance and salt resistance. Also provided are plants that can be obtained by the method according to the invention, and nucleic acid vectors to be used in the described methods.

Great Salt Lake Health & Air Quality: Monitoring Lakebed Exposure and its Impact on Air Quality and Environmental Hazards in the Great Salt Lake Watershed

The Great Salt Lake (GSL) is a terminal saline lake located in northern Utah, USA. Water inflow has declined rapidly over the last forty years due to human withdrawals and climate change. Lake levels have been lowered which has exposed over 50% of the lakebed to erosion. There is a public health risk tied to the subsequent increased frequency and intensity of regional dust storms caused by airborne lakebed dust under specific meteorological conditions.
