Analysis of satellite data for sensor improvement (detection of severe storms from space)

Stereo photography of clouds over southeast Asia was obtained using NOAA-7 and the Japanese GMS. Due to the breakdown of GMS2, GMS1, which had been retired, is being used as the replacement satellite. The launch of GMS should permit the US-Japan stereo experiment to be reactivated. The Lear jet experiment based at Grand Island, Nebraska was successful and provided data on the Redwood Falls clouds & Grand Island thunderstorm; an anvil-top cirrus deck; a circular thunderstorm; and jumping cirrus. The IR temperature field of the thunderstorm which induced the Andrews AFB microburst was analyzed with 1 C accuracy. The microburst and severe thunderstorm project is being planned.

Inventory and analysis of natural vegetation and related resources from space and high altitude photography

A high altitude photomosaic resource map of Site 29 was produced which provided an opportunity to test photo interpretation accuracy of natural vegetation resource features when mapped at a small (1:133,400) scale. Helicopter reconnaissance over 144 previously selected test points revealed a highly adequate level of photo interpretation accuracy. In general, the reasons for errors could be accounted for. The same photomosaic resource map enabled construction of interpretive land use overlays. Based on features of the landscape, including natural vegetation types, judgements for land use suitability were made and have been presented for two types of potential land use. These two, agriculture and urbanization, represent potential land use conflicts.

Resource analysis and land use planning with space and high altitude photography

Photographic scales providing resource data for decision making processes of land use and a legend system for barren lands, water resources, natural vegetation, agricultural, urban, and industrial lands in hierarchical framework are applied to various remote sensing techniques. Two natural vegetation resource and land use maps for a major portion of Maricopa County, Arizona are also produced.

Inventory and analysis of natural vegetation and related resources from space and high altitude photography

A multiple sampling technique was developed whereby spacecraft photographs supported by aircraft photographs could be used to quantify plant communities. Large scale (1:600 to 1:2,400) color infrared aerial photographs were required to identify shrub and herbaceous species. These photos were used to successfully estimate a herbaceous standing crop biomass. Microdensitometry was used to discriminate among specific plant communities and individual plant species. Large scale infrared photography was also used to estimate mule deer deaths and population density of northern pocket gophers.

Astronaut photography of the earth - Low cost images for resource exploration

Applications for photographs taken with handheld cameras by astronauts on the Space Shuttle are examined. The amount, types, and quality of photographs taken between 1981 and 1986 are described. Examples of these photographs and a portion of a map displaying the coverage of these photographs are presented. The possible use of handheld Space Shuttle photography in conjunction with Landsat mosaics for geologic exploration is discussed.

Mapping continental-scale biomass burning and smoke palls over the Amazon basin as observed from the Space Shuttle

Space Shuttle and Skylab-3 photography has been used to map the areal extent of Amazonian smoke palls associated with biomass burning (1973-1988). Areas covered with smoke have increased from approximately 300,000 sq km in 1973 to continental-size smoke palls measuring approximately 3,000,000 sq km in 1985 and 1988. Mapping of these smoke palls has been accomplished using space photography mainly acquired during Space Shuttle missions. Astronaut observations of such dynamic and vital environmental phenomena indicate the possibility of integrating the earth observation capabilities of all space platforms in future Global Change research.
