Lattice realizations of topological defects in the critical (1+1)-d three-state Potts model

Topological/perfectly-transmissive defects play a fundamental role in the analysis of the symmetries of two dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs). In the present work, spin chain regularizations for these defects are proposed and analyzed in the case of the three-state Potts CFT. In particular, lattice versions for all the primitive defects are presented, with the remaining defects obtained from the fusion of the primitive ones. The defects are obtained by introducing modified interactions around two given sites of an otherwise homogeneous spin chain with periodic boundary condition. The various primitive defects are topological on the lattice except for one, which is topological only in the scaling limit. The lattice models are analyzed using a combination of exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group techniques. Low-lying energy spectra for different defect Hamiltonians as well as entanglement entropy of blocks located symmetrically around the defects are computed. The latter provides a convenient way to compute the g-function which characterizes various defects. Finally, the eigenvalues of the line operators in the “crossed channel” and fusion of different defect lines are also analyzed. The results are all in agreement with expectations from conformal field theory.

Exact evaluation of large-charge correlation functions in nonrelativistic conformal field theory

The large-charge master field which generates all n -point correlation functions with an insertion of large charge Q in nonrelativistic conformal field theory is obtained. This field is used to compute Schrödinger-invariant n -point correlation functions of large-charge operators via a direct evaluation of the path integral. Conformal dimensions are found to agree with calculations based on the state-operator correspondence. The master field solution exhibits an emergent harmonic trap whose frequency is a function of the Euclidean time. The large-charge effective action with operator insertions describes a droplet of superfluid matter whose spatial size scales with the time separation of sources. The solution is used to compute Schrödinger symmetry breaking corrections in the large-charge effective field theory (EFT) due to a finite scattering length in the fundamental theory of fermions near unitarity. The scaling of these effects in the large-charge power counting scheme is established, and the size of the effects is quantified using input from quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the near-unitary gas, as well as from the large- N expansion at large charge. On two nucleons near unitarity with perturbative pions

We explore the impact of perturbative pions on the Unitarity Expansion in the two-nucleon S-waves of Chiral Effective Field Theory at next-to-next-to leading order (N 2 LO). Pion exchange explicitly breaks the nontrivial fixed point’s universality, i.e. invariance of S waves under both conformal and Wigner’s combined SU(4) spin–isospin transformations. On the other hand, Unitarity explicitly breaks chiral symmetry. The two seem incompatible in their respective exact-symmetry limits. χEFT with Perturbative Pions in the Unitarity Expansion resolves the apparent conflict in the Unitarity Window (phase shifts 45° ≲ δ(k) ≲ 135°), i.e. around momenta most relevant for low-energy nuclear systems. Its only LO scale is the scattering momentum; NLO adds only scattering length, effective range and non-iterated one-pion exchange (OPE); and N 2 LO only once-iterated OPE. Agreement in the 1 S 0 channel is very good.

The connection between nonzero density and spontaneous symmetry breaking for interacting scalars

We consider U(1)-symmetric scalar quantum field theories at zero temperature. At nonzero charge densities, the ground state of these systems is usually assumed to be a superfluid phase, in which the global symmetry is spontaneously broken along with Lorentz boosts and time translations. We show that, in d > 2 spacetime dimensions, this expectation is always realized at one loop for arbitrary non-derivative interactions, confirming that the physically distinct phenomena of nonzero charge density and spontaneous symmetry breaking occur simultaneously in these systems. We quantify this result by deriving universal scaling relations for the symmetry breaking scale as a function of the charge density, at low and high density. Moreover, we show that the critical value of μ above which a nonzero density develops coincides with the pole mass in the unbroken, Poincaré invariant vacuum of the theory. The same conclusions hold non-perturbatively for an O(N) theory with quartic interactions in d = 3 and 4, at leading order in the 1/N expansion. We derive these results by computing analytically the zero-temperature, finite-μ one-loop effective potential, paying special attention to subtle points related to the iε terms. We check our results against the one-loop low-energy effective action for the superfluid phonons in λΦ 4 theory in d = 4 previously derived by Joyce and ourselves, which we further generalize to arbitrary potential interactions and arbitrary dimensions. As a byproduct, we find analytically the one-loop scaling dimension of the lightest charge-n operator for the λΦ 6 conformal superfluid in d = 3, at leading order in 1/n, reproducing a numerical result of Badel et al. For a λΦ 4 superfluid in d = 4, we also reproduce the Lee-Huang-Yang relation and compute relativistic corrections to it. Finally, we discuss possible extensions of our results beyond perturbation theory.

Tuning the Conformations of an M4L4 Cage and Their Impact on Catalysis

Enzymes catalyze chemical reactions with remarkable rate enhancements and selectivity. Supramolecular catalysis seeks to understand and emulate these outcomes, leveraging noncovalent interactions, electric fields, and controlled active site microenvironments to enhance catalysis in an enzyme-like fashion. The effects of conformational dynamics on supramolecular catalysts and assemblies are, however, relatively unexplored, despite their crucial role in enzyme rate enhancement. Here, we elucidate the conformational landscape of a model M4L4 supramolecular host through a rational approach: stabilizing a high-energy conformer through distal ligand modification and a transient intermediate state through symmetry-matched guest encapsulation, as well as tuning the conformer distribution through same-charge metal exchange at the host vertices. Each of these structural modifications induces a substantial shift in the host's conformational landscape, offering insights into the rational design of conformationally dynamic cages and enzymes. Although the thermodynamic properties of the dynamic Ga4L412- cage can be influenced by temperature, solvent, and guest binding, we find that conformational change occurs on a time scale that renders it rate-limiting in a model catalytic reaction, precluding rate enhancement through conformational selection. This concept is illustrated by locking the catalytically inactive conformer to a high-energy conformer that is catalytically competent. These findings demonstrate that precise modulation of the conformational landscape of supramolecular hosts provides an effective strategy for controlling their catalytic activity and binding.

Quantum Critical Higgs: from AdS 5 to colliders

We examine distinctive signatures of Quantum Critical Higgs models at the LHC and future higher energy colliders. In these models the Higgs boson is part of a conformal sector that is softly broken at a threshold scale, and generically the scaling dimension of the Higgs is larger than in the Standard Model. In particular we examine the gg → H → ZZ, gg → H → γγ, and gg → Z → H Z channels to see how the cross sections deviate from the Standard Model in the high invariant mass region. In order to perform the calculations we use 5D duals of Quantum Critical Higgs models using the AdS/CFT correspondence, with a soft wall to break the conformal symmetry.

Constructing the infrared conformal generators on the fuzzy sphere

We investigate the conformal algebra on the fuzzy sphere, and in particular the generators of translations and special conformal transformations which are emergent symmetries in the infinite IR but are broken along the RG flow. We show how to extract these generators using the energy momentum tensor, which is complicated by the fact that one does not have a priori access to the energy momentum tensor of the CFT limit but rather must construct it numerically. We discuss and quantitatively analyze the main sources of corrections to the conformal generators due to the breaking of scale-invariance at finite energy, and develop efficient methods for removing these corrections. The resulting generators have matrix elements that match CFT predictions with accuracy varying from sub-percent level for the lowest-lying states up to several percent accuracy for states with dimension \sim 5 ∼ 5 with N=16 N = 16 fermions. We show that the generators can be used to accurately identify primary operators vs descendant operators in energy ranges where the spectrum is too dense to do the identification solely based on the approximate integer spacing within conformal multiplets.

Cosmological implications of a B – L charged hidden scalar: leptogenesis and gravitational waves*

In this study, we investigated the cosmological implications of a complex singlet scalar $ {\cal{S}}$ with non-trivial $ B-L$ charges in the conformal $ U(1)_{B-L}$ theory. It was found that, in a sizable region of parameter space, $ {\cal{S}}$ may disturb the resonant leptogenesis mechanism, which is used to generate baryon asymmetry, and affect the symmetry breaking dynamics in the strong first order phase transition. The stochastic gravitational waves (GWs) produced at the phase transition can be probed in future GW experiments. The GW searches prefer a relatively light $ {\cal{S}}$ at the TeV-scale; however, this is difficult to detect directly at future high-energy colliders.

Advances for QCD and the standard model: color-confining light-front holography and the principle of maximum conformality

Here, I review how the application of superconformal quantum mechanics and light-front holography leads to new insights into the physics of color confinement, the spectroscopy and dynamics of hadrons, as well as surprising supersymmetric relations between the masses of mesons, baryons, and tetraquarks. Spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is automatically fulfilled by supersymmetric Light-Front QCD. The light-front holographic approach (HLFQCD) also predicts the behavior of the QCD running coupling and other observables from the nonperturbative color-confining domain to the perturbative domain. One can determine the QCD running coupling to high precision from the data of just a single experiment over the entire perturbative regime by using the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC). The PMC, which generalizes the conventional Gell-Mann-Low method for scale-setting in perturbative QED to non-Abelian QCD, provides a rigorous method for achieving unambiguous scheme-independent, fixed-order Standard Model predictions, consistent with the principles of the renormalization group. I also briefly review a novel feature of hadronic physics predicted by QCD: intrinsic heavy quarks.

Carving out OPE space and precise O(2) model critical exponents

We develop new tools for isolating CFTs using the numerical bootstrap. A “cutting surface” algorithm for scanning OPE coefficients makes it possible to find islands in high-dimensional spaces. Together with recent progress in large-scale semidefinite programming, this enables bootstrap studies of much larger systems of correlation functions than was previously practical. We apply these methods to correlation functions of charge-0, 1, and 2 scalars in the 3d O(2) model, computing new precise values for scaling dimensions and OPE coefficients in this theory. Our new determinations of scaling dimensions are consistent with and improve upon existing Monte Carlo simulations, sharpening the existing decades-old 8σ discrepancy between theory and experiment.

Searching for gauge theories with the conformal bootstrap

Infrared fixed points of gauge theories provide intriguing targets for the modern conformal bootstrap program. In this work we provide some preliminary evidence that a family of gauged fermionic CFTs saturate bootstrap bounds and can potentially be solved with the conformal bootstrap. We start by considering the bootstrap for SO( N ) vector 4-point functions in general dimension D . In the large N limit, upper bounds on the scaling dimensions of the lowest SO( N ) singlet and traceless symmetric scalars interpolate between two solutions at Δ = D/ 2 – 1 and Δ = D – 1 via generalized free field theory. In 3D the critical O ( N ) vector models are known to saturate the bootstrap bounds and correspond to the kinks approaching Δ = 1 / 2 at large N . We show that the bootstrap bounds also admit another infinite family of kinks \( {\mathcal{T}}_D \) , which at large N approach solutions containing free fermion bilinears at Δ = D – 1 from below. The kinks \( {\mathcal{T}}_D \) appear in general dimensions with a D -dependent critical N * below which the kink disappears. We also study relations between the bounds obtained from the bootstrap with SO( N ) vectors, SU( N ) fundamentals, and SU( N ) × SU( N ) bi-fundamentals. We provide a proof for the coincidence between bootstrap bounds with different global symmetries. We show evidence that the proper symmetries of the underlying theories of \( {\mathcal{T}}_D \) are subgroups of SO( N ), and we speculate that the kinks \( {\mathcal{T}}_D \) relate to the fixed points of gauge theories coupled to fermions.

Determination of the chemical shift tensor anisotropy and asymmetry of strongly dipolar coupled protons under fast MAS

Orientationally-dependent interactions such as dipolar coupling, quadrupolar coupling, and chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) contain a wealth of spatial information that can be used to elucidate molecular conformations and dynamics. To determine the sign of the chemical shift tensor anisotropy parameter (δ aniso ), both the |m| = 1 and |m| = 2 components of the CSA need to be symmetry allowed, while the recoupling of the |m| = 1 term is accompanied with the reintroduction of homonuclear dipolar coupling components. Therefore, previously suggested sequences which solely recouple the |m| = 2 term cannot determine the sign a 1 H's δ aniso in a densely-coupled network. Here, we demonstrate the CSA recoupling of strongly dipolar coupled 1 H spins using the $Cn^1_n (90_{0}360_{180}540_{0}360_{180}90_{0})$ sequence. This pulse scheme recouples both the |m| = 1 and |m| = 2 CSA terms but the scaling factors for the homonuclear dipolar coupling terms are zeroed. Consequently, the sequence is sensitive to the sign of δ aniso but is not influenced by homonuclear dipolar interactions.

Current algebra approach to two-dimensional interacting chiral metals

In this study, we reinterpret the chiral U(N) Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model at level k>1 in (1+1) dimensions as an interacting chiral metal in two space dimensions. In this reinterpretation, spatial translations along one of the spatial dimensions in the two-dimensional chiral metal arise from a generator of the U(N) symmetry of the WZW model. The WZW model at k=1 is equivalent to Balents and Fisher's free chiral metal. Here, the U(N) symmetry corresponds to the IR symmetry of a chiral Fermi gas with (half of a) Fermi surface, with N equal to the number of points on the Fermi surface. We argue that exactly solvable interacting generalizations occur for levels k>1. Importantly, these interacting chiral metals maintain the U(N) symmetry of the free system. We calculate two-point correlation functions of the single-particle fermion operator, the U⁡(1) number density, and current operators in these theories for general k. We find that interactions (k>1) produce 1/N corrections to scaling of the single-particle fermion operator as N→∞ and renormalize the amplitudes of the density and current two-point functions. This construction illustrates the ersatz Fermi liquid proposal of Else et al.

Conformal collider physics meets LHC data

The remarkably high energies of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have allowed for the first measurements of the shapes and scalings of multipoint correlators of energy flow operators, ⟨ Ψ | E ( n → 1 ) E ( n → 2 ) ⋯ E ( n → k ) | Ψ ⟩ , providing new insights into the Lorentzian dynamics of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this letter, we use recent advances in effective field theory to derive a rigorous factorization theorem for the light-ray density matrix, ρ = | Ψ ⟩ ⟨ Ψ | , inside high transverse momentum jets at the LHC. Using the light-ray operator product expansion, the scaling behavior of multipoint correlators can be computed from the expectation value of the twist-2 spin- J light-ray operators, O [ J ] , in this state, Tr [ ρ O [ J ] ] . We compute the light-ray density matrix at next-to-leading order, and combine this with results for the next-to-leading logarithmic scaling behavior of the correlators up to six-points, comparing with CMS open data. This theoretical accuracy allows us to resolve the quantum scaling dimensions of QCD light-ray operators inside jets at the LHC. Our factorization theorem for the light-ray density matrix at the LHC completes the link between recent developments in the study of energy correlators and LHC phenomenology, opening the door to a wide variety of precision jet substructure studies. Celestial amplitudes as AdS-Witten diagrams

Both celestial and momentum space amplitudes in four dimensions are beset by divergences resulting from spacetime translation and sometimes scale invariance. In this paper we consider a (linearized) marginal deformation of the celestial CFT for Yang-Mills theory which preserves 2D conformal invariance but breaks both spacetime translation and scale invariance and involves a chirally coupled massive scalar. The resulting MHV celestial amplitudes are completely finite (apart from the usual soft and collinear divergences and isolated poles in the sum of the weights) and take the canonical CFT form. Moreover, we show they can be simply rewritten in terms of AdS 3 -Witten contact diagrams which evaluate to the well-known D-functions, thereby forging a direct connection between flat and AdS holography.

Pion gravitational form factors in the QCD instanton vacuum. I

The pion form factors of the QCD energy-momentum tensor (EMT) are studied in the instanton liquid model (ILM) of the QCD vacuum. In this approach, the breaking of conformal symmetry is encoded in the form of stronger-than-Poisson fluctuations in the number of instantons. For the trace of the EMT, it is shown that the gluonic trace anomaly term contributes half the pion mass, with the other half coming from the quark-mass-dependent σ term. The Q 2 dependence of the form factors is governed by glueball and scalar meson exchanges. For the EMT, the spin-0 (trace) and spin-2 (traceless rank-2 tensor) form factors are computed at next-to-leading order in the instanton density using effective quark operators. Relations between the gluon and quark contributions to the EMT form factors are derived. The form factors are also expressed in terms of the pion light-front wave functions in the ILM. The results at the low resolution scale of the inverse instanton size are evolved to higher scales using the renormalization group equation. The ILM results compare well with those of recent lattice QCD calculations. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

High energy modular bootstrap, global symmetries and defects

We derive Cardy-like formulas for the growth of operators in different sectors of unitary 2 dimensional CFT in the presence of topological defect lines by putting an upper and lower bound on the number of states with scaling dimension in the interval [Δ – δ, Δ + δ] for large Δ at fixed δ. Consequently we prove that given any unitary modular invariant 2D CFT symmetric under finite global symmetry G (acting faithfully), all the irreducible representations of G appear in the spectra of the untwisted sector; the growth of states is Cardy like and proportional to the “square” of the dimension of the irrep. In the Schwarzian limit, the result matches onto that of JT gravity with a bulk gauge theory. If the symmetry is non-anomalous, the result applies to any sector twisted by a group element. For c > 1, the statements are true for Virasoro primaries. Furthermore, the results are applicable to large c CFTs. We also extend our results for the continuous U(1) group.

Lifting of superconformal descendants in the D1-D5 CFT

We consider D1-D5-P states in the untwisted sector of the D1-D5 orbifold CFT where we excite one copy of the seed CFT with a left-moving superconformal descendant. When the theory is deformed away from this region of moduli space these states can ‘lift’, despite being BPS at the orbifold point. For descendants formed from the supersymmetry $^{Gα}_{Å,–s}$ and R-symmetry $^{Ja}_{–n}$ current modes we obtain explicit results for the expectation value of the lifts for various subfamilies of states at second order in the deformation parameter. A smooth ~ √h behaviour is observed in the lifts of these subfamilies for large dimensions. Using covering space Ward identities we then find a compact expression for the lift of the above $^{Ja}_{–n}$ descendant states valid for arbitrary dimensions. In the large-dimension limit this lift scales as ~ √h, strengthening the conjecture that this is a universal property of the lift of D1-D5-P states. We observe that the lift is not simply a function of the total dimension, but depends on how the descendant level is partitioned amongst modes.
