Inventory of forest and rangeland and detection of forest stress

There are no author-identified significant results in this report. Some ERTS-1 imagery has been received for each of the test sites: Black Hills, Atlanta, and Manitou. Only small portions of each site are covered and clouds have precluded capturing good imagery over the center of each site. Discoloration infestations of ponderosa pine are being located and sized on CIR transparencies. A computer program was completed from microdensitometer scans of CIR photos which maps areas of an image which are spectrally similar. Decided differences between forest types are present as well as differences between forest and other vegetative and nonvegetative land classes.

An interpretation of a geologic map of Fannin County, Texas, prepared by ADP techniques from ERTS MSS data

Multispectral scanner data, collected by ERTS-1 from an area in northeast Texas underlain by structurally simple cretaceous sedimentary rocks, were analyzed using several automatic data processing techniques. Training areas for the computer analysis were selected in three ways using: (1) an unsupervised classifier, (2) the unsupervised classifier to further refine training areas, and (3) available ground information. The first two methods utilize the capability of the unsupervised classifier to the unsupervised classifier to group resolution elements with similar spectral properties. With the imagery produced by these procedures, several geologic features can be identified. The most easily recognizable features are streams and other water bodies. The approximate location of contacts between several rock units can be mapped.

Lunar black spots and nature of the Apollo 17 landing area.

A few small areas on the moon with extremely low albedo are shown also to have similar spectral reflectivity and radar backscatter characteristics. These lunar 'black spots' include the dark mantling material of the Apollo 17 landing site as well as areas of the Sulpicious Gallus formation. Excluded from the black spot group are the dark haloed craters of Alphonsus and the normal dark mare areas such as northern Mare Tranquillitatis. Earth-based radar and optical measurements indicate that these lunar black spots have rock-free surfaces with a very low proportion of crystalline material to amorphous material. The glassy soil is rich in iron and titanium, at least to the concentrations found at the Apollo 11 site. Crystalline pyroxene is present also. The data for the black spots are consistent with a mantling material of ash or cinder.

Mare Humorum - An integrated study of spectral reflectivity.

A detailed study was made of the spectral reflectivity of 31 areas in the Humorum basic region. There are at least two units in the mare portion of Humorum which are distinguishable by spectral properties. One of these units (T-type) has a spectral reflectivity resembling that of the Apollo 11 site and also some areas in Oceanus Procellarum. The other unit in southwest Mare Humorum resembles Mare Serenitatis in spectral character (S-type). The continuity of T-type material through the break in the northeast wall of Mare Humorum and its spectral similarity to areas in Procellarum suggest that the T-type material may result from an event that flooded parts of Mare Procellarum at a period later than the original Humorum basin filling (S-type).

Crop identification and acreage measurement utilizing ERTS imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. Results of temporal overlays, equal and unequal prior probabilities, and independent test data are discussed. The amount of improvement that each technique contributed are summarized: (1) Results in Missouri where temporal overlays were made, show that temporal information improved the overall classification by 10%. (2) The dates were not optimum that were overlaid. (3) Data analysis in both Missouri and Idaho indicates that the use of prior probabilities improves the overall classification rates by at least 10% overusing the assumption that the crops are all equally likely. (4) Using both procedures together indicates that overall performance can be improved by 20% over one data and equal prior probabilities. (5) Idaho data has banding problems that may have caused serious problems in the crop classification. (6) The twelve crop types in Idaho seem to be quite similar spectrally, and hence, classification is quite difficult. (7) ERTS may not contain enough information to have perfect classification, but the data may still be useful for making crop acreage estimates. (8) Remotely sensed data could be used with a regression estimator if there is a correlation between ground data and classification results. (9) Remotely sensed data could be used with a double sample model.

Skylab S192 data evaluation: Comparisons with ERTS-1 results

The author has identified the following significant results. The Skylab S192 data was evaluated by: (1) comparing the classification results using S192 and ERTS-1 data over the Holt County, Nebraska agricultural study area, and (2) investigating the impact of signal-to-noise ratio on classification accuracies using registered S192 and ERTS-1 data. Results indicate: (1) The classification accuracy obtained on S192 data using its best subset of four bands can be expected to be as high as that on ERTS-1 data. (2) When a subset of four S192 bands that are spectrally similar to the ERTS-1 bands was used for classification, an obvious deterioration in the classification accuracy was observed with respect to the ERTS-1 results. (3) The thermal bands 13 and 14 as well as the near IR bands were found to be relatively important in the classification of agricultural data. Although bands 11 and 12 were highly correlated, both were invariably included in the best subsets of the band sizes, four and beyond, according to the divergence criterion. (4) The differentiation of corn from popcorn was difficult on both S192 and ERTS-1 data acquired at an early summer date. (5) The results on both sets of data indicate that it was relatively easy to differentiate grass from any other class.

Six-color photometry of Iapetus, Titan, Rhea, Dione and Tethys

The extensive photometric observations of Titan, Iapetus, Rhea, Dione and Tethys have made it possible to separate the solar phase and orbital phase contributions to the observed light variations of these satellites. For Titan, the wavelength dependence of its solar phase coefficient has been obtained. This dependence should prove useful in constructing future model atmospheres. The other four satellites show a surprising array of different photometric behaviors. Despite these differences, all four satellites have similar spectral reflectivities. Clearly Iapetus, Rhea, Dione and Tethys are complex objects, varying substantially from one another in surface structure and/or composition.

Ultraviolet spectrophotometry from Gemini 11 of stars in Orion

Ultraviolet spectrophotometry in the wavelength region 2600-3600 A is reported for the bright early-type stars beta, eta, gamma, delta, iota, epsilon, sigma, zeta, and kappa Ori. The results are in good agreement with other observations, and, with the possible exception of the supergiants, are in good agreement with recent line-blanketed model atmospheres. There is evidence that the supergiants possess a small ultraviolet deficiency shortward of 3000 A relative to main-sequence stars of similar spectral type. The most extreme example of this phenomenon is the star kappa Ori.

Balance between resolution and signal-to-noise ratio in scanner design for earth resources systems

An outline is presented of a method in which a sensor under design can be evaluated by comparison with an existing sensor of similar spectral response, providing certain performance characteristics are known. An approach for calculating errors in radiance measurements is discussed, giving attention to calibration, error caused by resolution factors, noise effects on accuracy, and combined radiance level accuracies for several scanner designs. The derivation of error caused by the modulation transfer function is also considered.

Results of the 1973 NASA/JPL balloon flight solar cell calibration program

High altitude balloon flights carried 37 standard solar cells for calibration above 99.5 percent of the earth's atmosphere. The cells were assembled into standard modules with appropriate resistors to load each cell at short circuit current. Each standardized module was mounted at the apex of the balloon on a sun tracker which automatically maintained normal incidence to the sun within 1.0 deg. The balloons were launched to reach a float altitude of approximately 36.6 km two hours before solar noon and remain at float altitude for two hours beyond solar noon. Telemetered calibration data on each standard solar cell was collected and recorded on magnetic tape. At the end of each float period the solar cell payload was separated from the balloon by radio command and descended via parachute to a ground recovery crew. Standard solar cells calibrated and recovered in this manner are used as primary intensity reference standards in solar simulators and in terrestrial sunlight for evaluating the performance of other solar cells and solar arrays with similar spectral response characteristics.

Detection and mapping of mineralized areas in the Cortez-Uinta Belt, Utah-Nevada, using computer-enhanced ERTS imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. Preliminary analysis indicates that mineralogical differences between altered rocks and most unaltered rocks in south-central Nevada cause visible and near infrared spectral reflectance differences, which can be used to discriminate these broad categories of rocks in multispectral images. The most important mineralogical differences are the increased abundance of goethite, hematite, and jarosite, and the presence of alunite, montmorillonite, and kaolinite in the altered rock. The technique to enhance subtle spectral differences combines ratioing of the MSS bands and contrast stretching. The stretched ratio values are used to produce black and white images that depict materials according to spectral reflectance; rationing minimizes the influence of topography and overall albedo on the grouping of spectrally similar materials. Field evaluation of color-ratio composite shows that, excluding alluvial areas, approximately 80 percent of the green and brown color patterns are related to hydrothermal alternation. The remaining 20 percent consists mainly of pink hematitic crystallized tuff, a result of vapor phase crystallization, and of tan and red ferruginous shale and siltstone.

The use of ERTS/LANDSAT imagery in relation to airborne remote sensing for terrain analysis in Western Queensland, Australia

The author has identified the following significant results. LANDSAT 1 and 2 imagery contrast the geology of the Cloncurry-Dobbyn and the Gregory River-Mt. Isa areas very clearly. Known major structural features and lithological units are clearly displayed while, hitherto unknown lineaments were revealed. Throughout this area, similar rock types produce similar spectral signatures, e.g. quartzites produce light signatures, iron rich rocks produce dark signatures. More geological data are discernible at the 1:50,000 scale than on the 1:250,000 scale. Ore horizons may be identified at the 1:50,000 scale, particularly where they are associated with iron rich rocks. On the level plains north of Cloncurry, distinctive spectral signatures produced by the combined reflectances of plant cover, soils, and geology, distinguish different types of superficial deposits. Existing and former channels of the Cloncurry and Williams Rivers are distinguished at the 1:50,000 scale on both the LANDSAT 1 and 2 imagery. On the Cloncurry Plains, fence lines are discernible on the 1:50,000 LANDSAT 2 imagery.

Development and application of operational techniques for the inventory and monitoring of resources and uses for the Texas coastal zone

The author has identified the following significant results. Image interpretation mapping techniques were successfully applied to test site 5, an area with a semi-arid climate. The land cover/land use classification required further modification. A new program, HGROUP, added to the ADP classification schedule provides a convenient method for examining the spectral similarity between classes. This capability greatly simplifies the task of combining 25-30 unsupervised subclasses into about 15 major classes that approximately correspond to the land use/land cover classification scheme.

Investigation of LANDSAT follow-on thematic mapper spatial, radiometric and spectral resolution

The author has identified the following significant results. Fine resolution M7 multispectral scanner data collected during the Corn Blight Watch Experiment in 1971 served as the basis for this study. Different locations and times of year were studied. Definite improvement using 30-40 meter spatial resolution over present LANDSAT 1 resolution and over 50-60 meter resolution was observed, using crop area mensuration as the measure. Simulation studies carried out to extrapolate the empirical results to a range of field size distributions confirmed this effect, showing the improvement to be most pronounced for field sizes of 1-4 hectares. Radiometric sensitivity study showed significant degradation of crop classification accuracy immediately upon relaxation from the nominally specified values of 0.5% noise equivalent reflectance. This was especially the case for data which were spectrally similar such as that collected early in the growing season and also when attempting to accomplish crop stress detection.

The French Atlantic littoral and the Massif Armoricain, part 1

The author has identified the following significant results. For interpretation of Isle of Jersey imagery, two types of taxons were defined according to their variability in time. On the whole, taxons with a similar spectral signature were opposed to those with strongly varying spectral signature. The taxon types were low diachronic variations and strong diachronic variation. Imagery interpretation was restricted to the landward part of the Fromentine area, including the sand beaches which were often difficult to spectrally separate from the barren coastal dunes in the southern part of Noirmoutier Island as well as along the Breton marsh. From 1972 to 1976, sandbanks reduced in area. Two high river discharge images showed over a two year period an identical outline for the Bilho bank to seaward, whereas upstream, the bank has receeded in the same time to a line joining Paimboeuf to Montoir. The Brillantes bank has receeded at both ends, partly due to dredging operations in the access channel to Donges harbor.

Comparing soil boundaries delineated by digital analysis of multispectral scanner data from high and low spatial resolution systems

The author has identified the following significant results. Computer-aided analysis techniques used with aircraft MSS data showed that the spatial resolution was sufficient to recognize each soil mapping unit of the test site. Some difficulties occurred where different soil series were intricately mixed, and this mixture showed as a separate spectral mapping unit, or where the difference between two soils depended on the depth of silty surface material. Analysis of LANDSAT data with computer-aided techniques showed that it was not possible to find spectrally homogeneous soil features of the seven soil series on the 40 ha test site on the digital display or on a picture print map. Cluster techniques could be used on an extended test area to group spectrally similar data points into cluster classes.

Results of the 1974 through 1977 NASA/JPL balloon flight solar cell calibration program

From 1974 through 1977, seven solar cell calibration flights and two R&D flights with a spectroradiometer as a payload were attempted. There were two R&D flights, and one calibration flight that failed. Each calibration flight balloon was designed to carry its payload to an altitude of 36.6 km (120 kft). The R&D flight balloons were designed for a payload altitude of 47.5 km (150 kft). At the end of the flight period, the upper (solar cell calibration system) and lower (consolidated instrument package (DIP) payloads were separated from the balloon and descend via parachutes. The calibrated solar cells recovered in this manner were used as primary intensity reference standards during solar simulator testing of solar cells and solar arrays with similar spectral response characteristics. This method of calibration has become the most widely accepted technique for developing space standard solar cells.

The use of coherence functions to determine dynamic excitation sources on launch vehicle payloads

The problem of determining the relative contribution of simultaneous acoustic and mechanical inputs to the response of structures under combined dynamic loads was studied. An analytical technique developed by Bendat for calculating ordinary, partial, and multiple coherence functions, using an iterative nonmatrix approach was applied to data obtained from laboratory tests on a complex structural assembly. Testing was performed in an acoustically 'live' room. Up to three random inputs, having similar spectral content and varying degrees of mutual coherence, and a single output were used. Stationary and nonstationary inputs were used. It was concluded that the technique provided an effective method of identifying sources of dynamic excitation and evaluating their relative contributions to the measured output at structural resonances, for stationary random inputs. An attempt to apply the technique to nonstationary inputs did not yield consistent results.
