Spectroheliograms in high temperature ions such as Fe XV show the existence of both filaments that are brighter than the ambient corona and filaments that are darker than the ambient corona. The relationship of the filaments to photospheric magnetograms is described, and a possible physical mechanism to explain the differences is discussed.
A photometric technique is presented which allows the observation of faculae across the entire solar disk. A clean continuum was used and granular noise was reduced by subtracting simultaneous spectroheliograms taken at widely separated points of the photospheric radiation curve. Spectroheliographic observations taken from March 12-14, 1980, using two color-scans in the green at gamma 4980.96 and gamma 5256.31 in the fourth order resulted in observation of clean continua in the red at gamma 6641.85 and gamma 7008.8 in another slot of the magnetograph. Approximately 20 raster scans were obtained and indications were found that dark magnetic facular structures in the Delta signal were cooler than the photosphere at equal optical continuum depths
An instrument for advanced studies of the solar corona is described. Its optical system provides nearly stigmatic imaging of selected portions of the sun over the spectral range from 22.5 to 44.0 nm. Both spectroheliograms and emission line profiles of coronal features will be obtained over a wide range of coronal temperatures.
Time series observations of the profile of the C IV resonance line 1548.19 A obtained in eight sunspots with the Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter (UVSP) on the Solar Maximum Mission are discussed. All of the sunspots exhibit significant oscillations in line-of-sight velocity with frequencies in the range from 5.8 mHz to 7.8 mHz (periods of 129-173 s). Significant intensity oscillations are observed at the same periods in four of the time series; the maximum intensity is in phase with maximum blueshift. Difference spectroheliograms ('Dopplergrams') of the two halves of the C IV line, as well as observations in the Si IV resonance line 1402.77 A and the O IV intersystem line 1401.16 A, also reveal velocity oscillations at similar frequencies but only over sunspots.
New evidence is presented that EUV emission lines formed at the levels of the base of the corona and the transition region are systematically shifted to shorter wavelengths within coronal holes relative to the rest of the solar disk, and that moreover this shift increases with height in the atmosphere. Measurements were made with a rocket-borne EUV spectrometer having high spectroscopic resolution and stability flown on July 15, 1980. Repeated measurements were made along a chord of the solar disk that crossed a compact coronal hole near sun center identified on gamma 10830 He I spectroheliograms. The maximum measured shift corresponded to a velocity of 12 km/sec in gamma 625 Mg X and 7 km/sec in gamma 629 O V. If these velocities correspond to a true mass flux, they provide important data on the acceleration of coronal plasma in open magnetic field regions. These observed Doppler displacements are a strong and significant signature of coronal holes, now measured on three rocket flights.
High spatial resolution spectroheliograms of the 1600 A region obtained during the HRTS rocket flight of 1978 February 13 are presented. The morphology, fine structure, and temporal behavior of emission bright points (BPs) in active and quiet regions are illustrated. In quiet regions, network elements persist as morphological units, although individual BPs may vary in intensity while usually lasting the flight duration. In cell centers, the BPs are highly variable on a 1 minute time scale. BPs in plages remain more constant in brightness over the observing sequence. BPs cover less than 4 percent of the quiet surface. The lifetime and degree of packing of BPs vary with the local strength of the magnetic field.
The variability of the O VI and Mg X emissions from four plumes is studied in order to place empirical constraints on possible plasma heating processes and acceleration mechanisms for mass flows in polar plumes. The observations comprise a 40 min seqeunce of spectroheliograms acquired with a temporal resolution of approximately 2 min. It is found that the Mg X emission from each plume has a strong 'dc' component and that any variations occurred at approximately the 10 percent (of the mean) level or less. This means that temporal variations in the density and/or temperature were 5 percent or less. Some statistically significant variations in the measured Mg X signals are seen. It is noted that two of the plumes decreased in brightness by approximately 10 percent during the 40 min period of the observations. Besides this, two plumes exhibited short-term (few minute) variations that are seen as statistically significant at a confidence level of more than 90 percent. The latter variations (if real) are thought to be due to small (approximately 20,000 K) fluctuations in temperature caused by fluctuations in the local plasma heating rate.
Spectroscopic diagnostic techniques used to determine the coronal source region of the solar wind, and results of preliminary applications are examined. The topics reviewed are magnetic fields, coronal mass ejections, coronal holes, flow velocities, coronal temperatures, fine spatial structure, and future observational programs. The physical mechanisms responsible for plasma heating, solar-wind acceleration, the transport of mass momentum and energy, and the spatial differentiation of chemical abundances are also discussed. Among the data presented are Skylab's white-light coronagraph photograph of a coronal transient, X-ray photographs of the corona, and spectroheliograms showing bright points overlying polar plumes, and macrospicules.
Solar chromospheric models are described. The models included are based on the observed spectrum, and on the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium. The calculations depend on realistic solutions of the radiative transfer and statistical equilibrium equations for optically thick lines and continua, and on including the effects of large numbers of lines throughout the spectrum. Although spectroheliograms show that the structure of the chromosphere is highly complex, one-dimensional models of particular features are reasonably successful in matching observed spectra. Such models were applied to the interpretation of chromospheric observations.
The present investigation is concerned with a study of the large-scale morphological and dynamical properties of selected active areas of the sun, taking into account a combination of data from the UVSP experiment on the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) spacecraft and ground-based data. The area considered comprises NOAA active regions 2516, 2517, and 2519 (Hale regions 16918 and the nothern portions of 16923), whose disk passage occurred during rotation 1696 in the latter half of June 1980. The method of analysis is discussed, and the general characteristics of the regions are examined. Attention is given to the designation of features, magnetograms, spectroheliograms, Dopplergrams, H-alpha filaments, and H-alpha fibrils.
The identifications of Fe XVII transitions between the 2s(2)2p(5)3s, 3p, and 3d configurations published by Jupen (1984) are reviewed. The review is based on examining spectroheliograms of solar flares obtained by a Naval Research Laboratory instrument on Skylab (S082-A). Agreement is obtained with the majority of identifications given by Jupen, but different wavelengths are found for a few of the lines. The relative intensities of the lines are qualitatively in agreement with calculations. A broad line at 1153.20 A is identified with the 2p(5)3s(3)P(0)-2p(5)3s(3)P1 forbidden transition of Fe XVII. This line was found in flare spectra obtained by the NRL slit spectrograph on Skylab (S082-B).
This paper presents an extensive set of coordinated observations of a solar active region, taking into account spectroheliograms obtained with the aid of the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) Ultraviolet Spectrometer Polarimeter (UVSP) instrument, SMM soft X-ray polychromator (XRP) raster maps, and high spatial resolution ultraviolet images of the sun in Lyman-alpha and in the 1600 A continuum. These data span together the upper solar atmosphere from the temperature minimum to the corona. The data are compared to maps of the inferred photospheric electric current derived from the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) vector magnetograph observations. Some empirical correlation is found between regions of inferred electric current density and the brightest features in the ultraviolet continuum and to a lesser extent those seen in Lyman-alpha within an active region.

Helium resonance line intensities are calculated for a set of six flare models corresponding to two rates of heating and three widely varying incident fluxes of soft X-rays. The differing ionization and excitation equilibria produced by these models, the processes which dominate the various cases, and the predicted helium line spectra are examined. The line intensities and their ratios are compared with values derived from Skylab NRL spectroheliograms for a class M flare, thus determining which of these models most nearly represents the density vs temperature structure and soft X-ray flux in the flaring solar transition region, and the temperature and dominant mechanaism of formation of the helium line spectrum during a flare.
Using the Very Large Array we have observed several solar filaments at 1.5 and 5 GHz. The brightness temperatures of the filaments are 4-5 x 10 K at 20 cm and 1.5-1.6 x 10,000 K at 6 cm. The maximum temperature depressions appear to be associated with H alpha filaments. Comparison with He 10830 angstrons spectroheliogram shows that 20 cm temperature depressions correspond to the regions of reduced intensity in the He 10830 angstrons around filaments, which correspond to coronal cavities. We have studied the temperature and density structure of the transition sheath between the filament and the surrounding corona assuming that the energy radiated away is balanced by the energy conducted from the corona. Researchers find that the observations can be better explained by a model having a pressure gradient in the transition sheath around the filament.
Using daily full-disk magnetograms and He I 10830 spectroheliograms to study the count and surface distribution of ephemeral regions over the solar cycle, Harvey (1985) concluded that the small dark structures seen in 10830, thought to correspond to X-ray bright points, were more often associated with magnetic bipoles that appeared to result from an encounter of already existing opposite polarity magentic flux than with emerging small magnetic bipoles (ephemeral regions). Such encounters would be more likely to occur in areas of mixed polarity. The fractional area of the sun covered by mixed polarity fields varies anti-correlated with the solar cycle leading to a possible explanation for the 180 degrees out of phase solar cycle variation of X-ray bright points. To establish the validity of this suggestion, a detailed study of time-sequence magnetic field, He I wavelength 10830, Ha, C IV, and Si II observations of selected areas of the quiet sun was initiated about 2 years ago. The preliminary results of this study are reported.
Spectroheliograms taken in the light of He I 10830 A at the National Solar Observatory Vacuum Telescope on Kitt Peak were used to identify coronal holes and bright points (BPs). Target points were identified, coordinates calculated, and spectra recorded. For each spectrum, the difference in wavelength between the Ca II K minimum and the FeI reference line was calculated. It was noteworthy that the overall effect is a blueshift. It should be noted that if material of chromospheric density moves outward at this velocity, it could supply the mass flux of the solar wind if this chromospheric flow was concentrated in a few dozen sources, each of a diameter of a few arc seconds.
Ultraviolet Spectrograph and Polarimeter (UVSP) observations of C IV intensity in the quiet sun were examined and compared to magnetograms and He I 10830 A spectroheliograms from Kitt Peak National Laboratory. The observations were made between 3 and 9 April, 1985. Spatially rastered UVSP intensity measurements were obtained at 11 wavelength positions in the 1548 A line of C IV. It was concluded that the stochastic process whereby convective shuffling of loop footprints leads to many topically dissipative events in active regions and the larger bipoles treated here continues to operate in regions of fewer, weaker flux loops, but the resulting events above threshold are less frequent.
