Picosecond flash spectroscopic studies on ultraviolet stabilizers and stabilized polymers

Spectroscopic and excited state decay kinetics are reported for monomeric and polymeric forms of ultraviolet stabilizers in the 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-benzotriazole and 2-hydroxybenzophenone classes. For some of these molecules in various solvents at room temperature, (1) ground state absorption spectra, (2) emission spectra, (3) picosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectra, (4) ground state absorption recovery kinetics, (5) emission kinetics, and (6) transient absorption kinetics are reported. In the solid state at low temperatures, emission spectra and their temperature dependent kinetics up to approximately 200K as well as, in one case, the 12K excitation spectra of the observed dual emission are also reported.

The effect of a gap between elevator and stabilizer on the static stability and maneuverability about the lateral axis in flight

A number of German airplanes have a gap between elevator and stabilizer. The effect of this open space is not generally known, although English wind-tunnel experiments have shown that even a very small gap exerts a profound influence on the elevator action. The purpose of the present free-flight measurements is to ascertain whether fairing over the gap would actually result in an appreciable improvement.

Numerical simulation of stability and stability control of high speed compressible rotating couette flow

The nonlinear temporal evolution of disturbances in compressible flow between infinitely long, concentric cylinders is investigated through direct numerical simulations of the full, three-dimensional Navier-Stokes and energy equations. Counter-rotating cylinders separated by wide gaps are considered with supersonic velocities of the inner cylinder. Initially, the primary disturbance grows exponentially in accordance with linear stability theory. As the disturbances evolve, higher harmonics and subharmonics are generated in a cascading order eventually reaching a saturation state. Subsequent highly nonlinear stages of the evolution are governed by the interaction of the disturbance modes, particularly the axial subharmonics. Nonlinear evolution of the disturbance field is characterized by the formation of high-shear layers extending from the inner cylinder towards the center of the gap in the form of jets similar to the ejection events in transitional and turbulent wall-bounded shear flows.

An Investigation of the Aerodynamic Characteristics of an 0.08-Scale Model of the Chance Vought XF7U-1 Airplane in the Langley High-Speed 7- by 10-Foot Tunnel. Part I - Basic Longitudinal Stability Characteristics, TED No. NACA DE308: Basic Longitudinal Stability Characteristics, TED No. NACA DE308 - Part 1

The stability and control characteristics of an 0.08-scale model of the Chance Vought XF7U-1 airplane have been investigated over a Mach number range from 0.40 to 0.91. Results of the basic longitudinal tests of the complete model with undeflected control surfaces are given in the present report with a very limited analysis of the results.

A Comparison of Novel Woodstove Catalytic Combustors to Improve Low Temperature Light off and Catalyst Stability at High Temperatures and Corrosive Environments, Including Stability of Catalytic Combustors used in Coastal Environments

Wood heaters with catalytic combustors often emit higher levels of particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at startup before the catalytic combustor is at operational temperature. This project aims to advance wood heater catalytic combustor technology by studying degradation mechanisms in failed field catalysts and using those insights to develop an improved catalytic combustor. Findings will provide critical insights into the degradation mechanisms of wood heater catalytic combustors and inform the design of catalysts that deliver improved efficiency, durability, and performance compared to current commercial products. The outcomes of this project will not only improve catalytic combustor technology but also contribute to operational guidelines to extend catalyst lifetimes.

Research study on stabilization and control. Modern sampled-date control theory. Stability analysis of the low cost large space telescope system

A mathematical model employing Fourier series is used to show quantization and reaction wheel friction nonlinearity in a telescope system for use in space. Block diagrams are used to illustrate the system. A discrete describing function of a quantizer also is given, and input and output signal waveforms, with illustrative examples, are shown.

Concerning isothermal self-similar blast waves. I - One-dimensional flow and its stability. II - Two-dimensional flow and its stability

One-dimensional self-similar isothermal flow behind a blast wave propagating in a medium whose density varies with distance is investigated for the cases of one-dimensional and two-dimensional flow. The isothermal flow model is adopted as an alternative to adiabatic models of self-similar flow, which neglect heat flux. The topology of the one-dimensional flow solutions, the singularities, and the influence of boundary conditions are discussed; the instability of the isothermal blast waves against nonself-similar perturbations is also considered. The number of critical points in the two-dimensional solutions is found to vary from the number in the one-dimensional problem.
