Liapunov stability analysis of hybrid dynamical systems in the neighborhood of nontrivial equilibrium

This paper is concerned with the stability of a hybrid dynamical system in the neighborhood of a nontrivial equilibrium, where the system consists of one rigid part and n elastic members. The body moves in a central-force field with its mass center describing a circular orbit. The nontrivial equilibrium is defined by steady rotation of the system at an angular velocity equal to the orbital velocity, with the elastic members being in deformed state. A Liapunov stability analysis is performed by assuming small perturbations about the nontrivial equilibrium, where the latter is generally defined by nonlinear differential equations. The theory is applied to a gravity-gradient stabilized satellite with flexible appendages.

Dynamic simulation and stability analysis

Dynamic Interaction Simulation of Controls and Structure (DISCOS) program was developed for dynamic simulation and stability analysis of passive and actively controlled spacecraft. Program is written in FORTRAN IV for batch execution and requires access to finite-element structures program as NASTRAN for flexible-body input data.

Stability analysis of multigrid acceleration methods for the solution of partial differential equations

A calculation is made of the stability of various relaxation schemes for the numerical solution of partial differential equations. A multigrid acceleration method is introduced, and its effects on stability are explored. A detailed stability analysis of a simple case is carried out and verified by numerical experiment. It is shown that the use of multigrids can speed convergence by several orders of magnitude without adversely affecting stability.

A Stability Analysis of Cylindrical Panels Using a Finite Element Formulation

A cylindrical finite element suitable for the linear stability analysis of cylindrical shells is developed. Energy principles and variational methods lead to a problem formulation which lends itself to physical interpretations of the governing matrices of the finite element. By properly grouping the terms which result from taking the second variation of the potential energy of the element, it is possible to identify three distinct types of matrices. The first matrix is the conventional stiffness matrix; the second is an initial stress stiffness matrix; and the third is an initial displacement stiffness matrix. With the assumption of linearity, the buckling problem is stated in terms of the classical linear real eigenvalue equation. This problem formulation was programmed on the CDC 6600 series computer. The computer program is used to analyze the buckling of a variety of structures. Columns, arches, flat plates and curved panels with and without cutouts are considered.

The stability analysis of magnetohydrodynamic equilibria - Comparing the thermodynamic approach with the energy principle

This paper is a contribution to the stability analysis of current-carrying plasmas, i.e., plasma systems that are forced by external mchanisms to carry a nonrelaxing electrical current. Under restriction to translationally invariant configurations, the thermodynamic stability criterion for a multicomponent plasma is rederived within the framework of nonideal MHD. The chosen dynamics neglects scalar resistivity, but allows for other types of dissipation effects both in Ohm's law and in the equation of motion. In the second section of the paper, the thermodynamic stability criterion is compared with the ideal MHD based energy principle of Bernstein et al. With the help of Schwarz's inequality, it is shown that the former criterion is always more 'pessimistic' than the latter, i.e., that thermodynamic stability implies stability according to the MHD principle, but not vice versa. This reuslt confirms the physical plausible idea that dissipational effects tend to weaken the stability properties of current-carrying plasma equilibria by breaking the constraints of ideal MHD and allowing for possibly destabilizing effects such as magnetic field line reconfiguration.

Design of Launch Vehicle Flight Control Systems Using Ascent Vehicle Stability Analysis Tool

A launch vehicle represents a complicated flex-body structural environment for flight control system design. The Ascent-vehicle Stability Analysis Tool (ASAT) is developed to address the complicity in design and analysis of a launch vehicle. The design objective for the flight control system of a launch vehicle is to best follow guidance commands while robustly maintaining system stability. A constrained optimization approach takes the advantage of modern computational control techniques to simultaneously design multiple control systems in compliance with required design specs. "Tower Clearance" and "Load Relief" designs have been achieved for liftoff and max dynamic pressure flight regions, respectively, in the presence of large wind disturbances. The robustness of the flight control system designs has been verified in the frequency domain Monte Carlo analysis using ASAT.

Application of small-signal modeling and measurement techniques to the stability analysis of an integrated switching-mode power system

Small-signal modeling techniques are used in a system stability analysis of a breadboard version of a complete functional electrical power system. The system consists of a regulated switching dc-to-dc converter, a solar-cell-array simulator, a solar-array EMI filter, battery chargers and linear shunt regulators. Loss mechanisms in the converter power stage, including switching-time effects in the semiconductor elements, are incorporated into the modeling procedure to provide an accurate representation of the system without requiring frequency-domain measurements to determine the damping factor. The small-signal system model is validated by the use of special measurement techniques which are adapted to the poor signal-to-noise ratio encountered in switching-mode systems. The complete electrical power system with the solar-array EMI filter is shown to be stable over the intended range of operation.

On-orbit frequency stability analysis of the GPS NAVSTAR-1 quartz clock and the NAVSTARs-6 and -8 rubidium clocks

An on-orbit frequency stability performance analysis of the GPS NAVSTAR-1 quartz clock and the NAVSTARs-6 and -8 rubidium clocks is presented. The clock offsets were obtained from measurements taken at the GPS monitor stations which use high performance cesium standards as a reference. Clock performance is characterized through the use of the Allan variance, which is evaluated for sample times of 15 minutes to two hours, and from one day to 10 days. The quartz and rubidium clocks' offsets were corrected for aging rate before computing the frequency stability. The effect of small errors in aging rate is presented for the NAVSTAR-8 rubidium clock's stability analysis. The analysis includes presentation of time and frequency residuals with respect to linear and quadratic models, which aid in obtaining aging rate values and identifying systematic and random effects. The frequency stability values were further processed with a time domain noise process analysis, which is used to classify random noise process and modulation type.

Aeroelastic stability analysis of the AD-1 manned oblique-wing aircraft

The AD-1 manned flight test program was conducted to evaluate the stability, control and handling characteristics of oblique wing aircraft. The results of the aeroelastic stability analysis are presented for both the wing alone and the wing with ailerons. A comparison was made between the results obtained using the traditional k-method of flutter analysis and the results using the PK or British method of flutter analysis. Studies were performed using the latest version of the NASTRAN computer code as well as the PASS/FLUT program.

The dimensional stability analysis of seventeen stepped specimens of 18Ni 200 grade, PH13-8Mo and A-286

This report documents the results of a dimensional stability analysis of seventeen stepped specimens that were used in the evaluation of factors influencing warpage in metallic alloys being used for cryogenic wind tunnel models. Specimens used in the analysis were manufactured from 18Ni 200 Grade Maaraging steel, PH13-8Mo, and A-286 stainless steel. Quantitative data are provided on the behavior of the specimens due to the effects of both machining and cryogenic cycling effects.

Linearization of digital derived rate algorithm for use in linear stability analysis

The digital derived rate (DDR) algorithm is used to calculate the rate of rotation of the Centaur upper-stage rocket. The DDR is highly nonlinear algorithm, and classical linear stability analysis of the spacecraft cannot be performed without linearization. The performance of this rate algorithm is characterized by a gain and phase curve that drop off at the same frequency. This characteristic is desirable for many applications. A linearization technique for the DDR algorithm is investigated. The linearization method is described. Examples of the results of the linearization technique are illustrated, and the effects of linearization are described. A linear digital filter may be used as a substitute for performing classical linear stability analyses, while the DDR itself may be used in time response analysis.
