T/BEST: Technology Benefit Estimator for Composites and Applications to Engine Structures

Progress in the field of aerospace propulsion has heightened the need to combine advanced technologies. These benefits will provide guidelines for identifying and prioritizing high-payoff research areas, will help manage research with limited resources, and will show the link between advanced and basic concepts. An effort was undertaken at the NASA Lewis Research Center to develop a formal computational method, T/BEST (Technology Benefit Estimator), to assess advanced aerospace technologies, such as fibrous composites, and credibly communicate the benefits of research. Fibrous composites are ideal for structural applications such as high-performance aircraft engine blades where high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios are required. These factors - along with the flexibility to select the composite system and layup, and to favorably orient fiber directions - reduce the displacements and stresses caused by large rotational speeds in aircraft engines.

Transmission-zero bounds for large space structures, with applications

Many large space structure control problems lead quite naturally to the application of an optimal regulator, so the transmission zeros of the open-loop system give fundamental information about the speed of response achievable by the closed-loop system. Despite the importance of this and other well-known zeros properties, little attention has been given to the transmission zeros of large space structures, except for the special case of a rigid spacecraft with flexible appendages. The object of this paper is to remedy this deficiency. In particular, it is proved that the zeros of a structure with colocated sensors and actuators must lie in a region of the complex plane that is defined by its natural frequencies and damping ratios. This generic result, a consequence of the special form of the equations of motion of structural dynamics, admits a very simple graphical interpretation: it is the generalization of the classical pole-zero interlacing property of undamped single-input/single-output structures. The number of sensor/actuator pairs, and their locations, specify where in the permissible region transmission zeros actually lie, thus quantifying the effect of sensor/actuator placement on closed-loop system performance. These points are illustrated by simple examples.

A Reinforcement Learning Hyper-Heuristic in Multi-Objective Optimization with Application to Structural Damage Identification

Multi-objective optimization allows satisfying multiple decision criteria concurrently, and generally yields multiple solutions. It has the potential to be applied to structural damage identification applications which are oftentimes under-determined. How to achieve high-quality solutions in terms of accuracy, diversity, and completeness is a challenging research subject. The solution techniques and parametric selections are believed to be problem specific. In this research, we formulate a reinforcement learning hyper-heuristic scheme to work coherently with the single-point search algorithm MOSA/R (Multi-Objective Simulated Annealing Algorithm based on Re-seed). The four low-level heuristics proposed can meet various optimization requirements adaptively and autonomously using the domination amount, crowding distance, and hypervolume calculations. The new approach exhibits improved and more robust performance than AMOSA, NSGA-II, and MOEA/D when applied to benchmark test cases. It is then applied to an active damage interrogation scheme for structural damage identification where solution diversity/completeness and accuracy are critically important. Results show that this approach can successfully include the true damage scenario in the solution set identified. The outcome of this research can potentially be extended to a variety of applications.

Tooling Foam for Structural Composite Applications

Tooling technology applications for composite structures fabrication have been expanded at MSFC's Productivity Enhancement Complex (PEC). Engineers from NASA/MSFC and Lockheed Martin Corporation have developed a tooling foam for use in composite materials processing and manufacturing that exhibits superior thermal and mechanical properties in comparison with other tooling foam materials. This tooling foam is also compatible with most preimpregnated composite resins such as epoxy, bismaleimide, phenolic and their associated cure cycles. MARCORE tooling foam has excellent processability for applications requiring either integral or removable tooling. It can also be tailored to meet the requirements for composite processing of parts with unlimited cross sectional area. A shelf life of at least six months is easily maintained when components are stored between 50F - 70F. The MARCORE tooling foam system is a two component urethane-modified polyisocyanurate, high density rigid foam with zero ozone depletion potential. This readily machineable, lightweight tooling foam is ideal for composite structures fabrication and is dimensionally stable at temperatures up to 350F and pressures of 100 psi.

Structural analysis applications

The programs in the structural analysis area of the HOST program emphasized the generation of computer codes for performing three-dimensional inelastic analysis with more accuracy and less manpower. This paper presents the application of that technology to Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine (AGTE) components; combustors, tur- bine blades, and vanes. Previous limitations will be reviewed and the breakthrough technology highlighted. The synergism and spillover of the program will be demonstrated by reviewing applications to thermal barrier coatings analysis and the SSME HPFTP turbine blade. These applications show that this technology has increased the ability of the AGTE designer to be more innovative, productive, and accurate.

Self-organization in neural networks - Applications in structural optimization

The present paper discusses the applicability of ART (Adaptive Resonance Theory) networks, and the Hopfield and Elastic networks, in problems of structural analysis and design. A characteristic of these network architectures is the ability to classify patterns presented as inputs into specific categories. The categories may themselves represent distinct procedural solution strategies. The paper shows how this property can be adapted in the structural analysis and design problem. A second application is the use of Hopfield and Elastic networks in optimization problems. Of particular interest are problems characterized by the presence of discrete and integer design variables. The parallel computing architecture that is typical of neural networks is shown to be effective in such problems. Results of preliminary implementations in structural design problems are also included in the paper.

Finite element analysis of helicopter structures

Application of the finite element analysis is now being expanded to three dimensional analysis of mechanical components. Examples are presented for airframe, mechanical components, and composite structure calculations. Data are detailed on the increase of model size, computer usage, and the effect on reducing stress analysis costs. Future applications for use of finite element analysis for helicopter structures are projected.

QM-8 final performance evaluation report: SEALS, volume 4

The Space Shuttle Redesigned Solid Rocket Motor (RSRM) static test of Qualification Motor-8 (QM-8) was conducted. The QM-8 test article was the fifth full-scale, full-duration test, and the third qualification motor to incorporate the redesigned case field joint and nozzle-to-case joint. This was the second static test conducted in the T-97 test facility, which is equipped with actuators for inducing external side loads to a 360 degree external tank (ET) attach ring during test motor operation, and permits heating/cooling of an entire motor. The QM-8 motor was cooled to a temperature which ensured that the maximum propellant mean bulk temperature (PMBT) of 40 F was achieved at firing. All test results are not included, but rather, the performance of the metal case, field joints, and nozzle-to-case joint is addressed. The involvement is studied of the Structural Applications and Structural Design Groups with the QM-8 test which includes: assembly procedures of the field and nozzle-to-case joints, joint leak check results, structural test results, and post-test inspection evaluations.

Eigensensitivity analysis for space structures with applications in design optimization

An approximate structural eigenvalue/vector analysis technique which uses eigensensitivities in a truncated Taylor series expression is presented. It is shown that this technique can provide the computational efficiency urgently needed for large scale control-structure optimization problems. In addition, a unified formulation and solution approach for calculating eigenvalue and eigenvector derivatives of the real symmetric structural eigenvalue problem is presented.
