Research at UC Berkeley on the SPICE and HeRALD Dark Matter Experiments (Technical Report for DE-SC0022354)

The McKinsey and Pyle groups have taken on the responsibility to complete a number of critical tasks necessary for the successful completion of the TESSERACT project planning phase. In particular: 1) Transition Edge Sensor testing, characterization, and electromagnetic noise mitigation; 2) Design and testing of the athermal phonon detectors along with vibrational noise characterization and mitigation; 3) Testing and characterization of prototype detectors using silica, sapphire, gallium arsenide, and superfluid helium as detector materials. This grant supported efforts of graduate student Roger Romani toward these goals.

Cryogenic Testing of HL-LHC Q1/Q3 Cryo-Assemblies at Fermilab

Fermilab is conducting horizontal cryogenic testing of Q1/Q3 Cryo-Assemblies for the high-luminosity LHC upgrade (HL-LHC). Cryo-Assemblies are installed on the upgraded Fermilab horizontal test stand previously used for testing the LHC inner triplet quadrupoles. The cryogenic process requirements of these tests include controlled cool-down and warm-up with a 100 K maximum temperature differential between the two ends of the cold mass, operation of a 1.3 bar, 1.9 K bath of subcooled superfluid helium during power testing and magnetic measurements, and operation at pressures up to 18 bar with full helium recovery after a quench. This paper presents the operational experience gained from the first tests as well as improvements for subsequent tests.

Fabrication of the HFVMTF Double-Bath Cryostat

The High Field Vertical Magnet Test Facility (HFVMTF) at Fermilab is designed to test superconducting magnets up to 20 tons and 1.3 meters in diameter. Central to the facility is a double-bath superfluid helium cryostat reaching 1.8 K at 1.2 bar. Integrated with a 15 T superconducting dipole from LBNL, HFVMTF supports HTS cable testing for fusion applications. This paper presents the design and fabrication of the cryostat, with a focus on two complex components: the 2 K heat exchanger and the lambda plate. The heat exchanger thermally links sub-atmospheric and pressurized helium baths. The 1.4-meter lambda plate provides thermal isolation and structural support for over 20 tons under 1.3 bar pressure differential. Finite Element Analysis validated the vessel’s integrity under maximum load conditions.

2 Kelvin helium distribution system for the Electron Ion Collider’s 10 o’clock satellite refrigerator

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) will involve superfluid helium cooling of superconducting magnets and Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavities at several sites around the existing Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) accelerator tunnel. While the majority of the cooling power for these loads is provided by BNL’s central cryogenic plant, Jefferson Lab is designing satellite equipment which augments the central plant and enables 2 Kelvin operation. The 2 K cryogenic distribution system for the collider’s 10 o’clock location (Interaction Region 10 or IR10) includes all necessary interfaces to the IR10 Satellite Refrigerator, to the overall EIC cryogenic distribution system, and to 12 SRF cryomodules for the electron and hadron storage rings. In addition to providing the required cooling capacities in all operating modes, the IR10 2 K cryogenic distribution system also stabilizes the supply temperature and enables safe connection and disconnection of individual IR10 cryomodules. Moreover, the layout of the IR10 2 K cryogenic distribution system copes with challenging spatial constraints and adapts to the process configuration and routing of existing RHIC cryogenic distribution components which will be re-used for EIC. This paper gives a full overview of the IR10 satellite cryogenic distribution system design, and highlights some of the challenges encountered.

Neural-network quantum states for the nuclear many-body problem

A long-standing goal of nuclear theory is to explain how the structure and dynamics of atomic nuclei and neutron-star matter emerge from the underlying interactions among protons and neutrons. Achieving this goal requires solving the nuclear quantum many-body problem with high accuracy across a wide range of length scales and density regimes. In this review, we discuss how artificial neural network representations of the nuclear many-body wave function have significantly extended the capabilities of continuum quantum Monte Carlo methods. In particular, neural network quantum states enable calculations of larger systems than were previously accessible and provide a flexible framework for capturing phenomena that challenge conventional approaches, including the emergence of nuclear clusters and superfluid phases in dense matter. We highlight recent applications to finite nuclei, infinite nuclear and neutron matter, and dynamical processes relevant to lepton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus scattering. We also discuss conceptual and methodological connections with condensed matter physics, emphasizing developments in neural network quantum states that bridge strongly correlated systems across disciplines. Together, these developments demonstrate how neural-network methods open new avenues toward unified and accurate descriptions of nuclear structure, matter, and reactions.

Uranium Doped Gallium Nitride Epitaxial Thin Films

Gallium nitride (GaN) is near ubiquitous in modern day technologies, forming the backbone of solid-state lighting and high-power electronics. Engineering the physical properties of GaN has been investigated to some degree by the incorporation or doping of most of the elements of the periodic table, but the actinides remain unexplored. Molecular beam epitaxy is used to demonstrate uranium doping of GaN single crystals. High structural quality of the host matrix is maintained despite partial elemental segregation of the uranium dopant into 1D structures at the levels presented here. Electronic transport measurements reveal relatively high conductivity, which persists down to cryogenic temperature and is characterized by the formation of narrow gaps in the electronic band structures very close to the Fermi level. Photoluminescence measurements reveal that the U-doped GaN exhibits optical behavior similar to that of the GaN substrate. The addition of actinide materials to a non-centrosymmetric, optically active, radiation-hard, and electronically tunable host matrix opens a world of possibilities for investigating and leveraging elements with high electron correlations in the pursuit of novel devices.

The role of excess vacancies in stabilizing solute clusters in low-alloy steels

The formation of solute clusters in irradiated low-alloy steels, such as reactor pressure vessel steels, is a critical cause of radiation hardening and embrittlement. However, the chemical interactions among solute elements and excess vacancies remain to be fully understood. This study employs density functional theory, cluster expansion, and lattice-based Monte Carlo simulations to examine the stability and morphology of nano-size coherent solute clusters with excess vacancies. The findings reveal that excess vacancies are crucial in stabilizing and promoting the growth of Mn-Ni-Si-vacancy clusters. A minimum of seven vacancies is required for stable nucleation and growth of these clusters. These Mn-Ni-Si clusters act as defect sinks, effectively trapping and absorbing mobile vacancies generated under irradiation. Furthermore, phosphorus (P) preferentially dissolves in Mn-Ni-Si clusters due to chemical coupling with vacancies. In conclusion, this study offers new insights into solute-vacancy interactions, enhancing our understanding of solute-defect cluster formation and embrittlement in low-alloy steels.

Tuning Kinetic Inductance with Doping in Superconducting Electron Gases at the KTaO 3 (111) Interface

We used coplanar waveguide resonators fabricated from the two-dimensional superconductor formed at KTaO 3 (111) interfaces to characterize the superconductor’s sheet kinetic inductance L K/□ . Upon varying the carrier density, in samples with T c ranging from 0.62 to 1.81 K, we can tune L K/□ between 1.88 and 7.42 nH/□ at the lowest temperatures, exceeding the highest values reported for granular aluminum films. The temperature dependence of L K/□ is consistent with a superconducting gap without nodes. The high L K/□ of superconducting KTaO 3 (111) interfacial electron gases combined with the high dielectric constant of KTaO 3 results in resonators with exceedingly low phase velocities (“slow light”) and small mode volumes. In addition, superconducting KTaO 3 (111) interfacial electron gases are robust in magnetic fields well above a Tesla. In conclusion, these features can enable unique device applications in superconducting electronics and quantum information science.

Atomistic Mechanisms of Stress-Dependent Molten Salt Corrosion in NiCr Alloys

Ni-based structural alloys in molten salt environments often experience simultaneous mechanical loading and corrosive attack, yet the mechanisms governing stress-corrosion interactions remain unclear. Prior studies largely emphasize tensile stress, while the role of compressive stress has received limited attention. Here, reactive molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the coupled effects of applied strain and corrosion in Ni 0.75 Cr 0.25 exposed to molten FLiNaK at 800 °C. A Σ5(210) grain boundary model is subjected to tensile (+4%) to compressive (−4%) uniaxial strains, and corrosion behavior is evaluated through fluorine adsorption, charge redistribution, and grain boundary evolution. Tensile strain accelerates intergranular corrosion susceptibility by reducing local atomic packing through elastic dilation and increasing excess free volume at the grain boundary, which enhances atomic mobility and salt infiltration. In contrast, compressive strain can suppress corrosion by promoting the formation of a ridge-like surface layer along the grain boundary, limiting salt access to the underlying alloy. These results provide atomistic insight into how stress states influence grain boundary corrosion in molten salts.

Defect-induced phonon-resonant scattering and its influence on thermal transport of irradiated thorium-dioxide

Thermal transport in proton irradiated thorium-dioxide (ThO 2 ) is investigated. Using a combination of experiments and first-principles computational framework, the role of lattice defects on thermal conductivity is analyzed. A resonant-phonon scattering mechanism beyond the traditionally considered Rayleigh scattering is found to significantly influence low-temperature thermal transport in the presence of irradiation-induced point defects. The existence of localized phonon modes associated with irradiation-induced defects is suggested by the inability of the first-principles based thermal conductivity model—which considers only three-phonon interactions and phonon-defects scattering using the Tamura formalism—to predict the experimental results, unless a resonant scattering mechanism is included. The emergence of additional peaks in the Raman spectra in the proximity of phonon-resonant frequency provides further evidence for the existence of localized modes. Coupled with a microstructure evolution model, this analysis enables more accurate analysis for contrasting the contributions of different phonon scattering mechanisms across all irradiation doses and temperatures.

Stoichiometry–Induced Ferromagnetism in Altermagnetic Candidate MnTe

The field of spintronics has seen a surge of interest in altermagnetism due to novel predictions and many possible applications. MnTe is a leading altermagnetic candidate that is of significant interest across spintronics due to its layered antiferromagnetic structure, high Neel temperature (T N ≈ 310 K) and semiconducting properties. The results on molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown MnTe/InP(111) films are presented. Here, it is found that the electronic and magnetic properties are driven by the natural stoichiometry of MnTe. Electronic transport and in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy show the films are natively metallic with the Fermi level in the valence band and the band structure is in good agreement with first-principles calculations for altermagnetic spin-splitting. Neutron diffraction confirms that the film is antiferromagnetic with planar anisotropy and polarized neutron reflectometry indicates weak ferromagnetism, which is linked to a slight Mn-richness that is intrinsic to the MBE-grown samples. Further, when combined with the anomalous Hall effect, this work shows that the electronic response is strongly affected by the ferromagnetic moment. Altogether, this highlights potential mechanisms for controlling altermagnetic ordering for diverse spintronic applications.

Experimental and Theoretical Confirmation of Covalent Bonding in α‐Pu

Plutonium's radioactivity provides functionality for nuclear batteries, nuclear reactors, etc., but its complex electronic properties harbor strongly correlated behavior giving rise to a host of interesting phenomena including the presence of a ca. 25% volume collapse between δ-Pu and α-Pu. The complex bonding environments of the ground state allotrope, α-Pu, serve as a unique testing ground for new computational and experimental approaches within the Pu science community. For the first time, a combination of novel ansatzes is used in all-electron density functional theory (DFT) and pair distribution functions (PDF) obtained from high-Q X-ray diffraction to study the bonding behavior in α-Pu. This first experimental and theoretical co-informed description of local bonding behavior for α-Pu reveals covalent bonds, which is a topic that remains of interest in this allotrope. The covalent bonding present at the atomistic level accounts for several of α-Pu's macropscopic properties (e.g., Poisson's ratio) that in turn explains its physical functionalities relative to other allotropic phases like δ-Pu.

Anisotropic 2D van der Waals Magnets Hosting 1D Spin Chains

Abstract The exploration of 1D magnetism, frequently portrayed as spin chains, constitutes an actively pursued research field that illuminates fundamental principles in many‐body problems and applications in magnonics and spintronics. The inherent reduction in dimensionality often leads to robust spin fluctuations, impacting magnetic ordering and resulting in novel magnetic phenomena. Here, structural, magnetic, and optical properties of highly anisotropic 2D van der Waals antiferromagnets that uniquely host spin chains are explored. First‐principle calculations reveal that the weakest interaction is interchain, leading to essentially 1D magnetic behavior in each layer. With the additional degree of freedom arising from its anisotropic structure, the structure is engineered by alloying, varying the 1D spin chain lengths using electron beam irradiation, or twisting for localized patterning, and spin textures are calculated, predicting robust stability of the antiferromagnetic ordering. Comparing with other spin chain magnets, these materials are anticipated to bring fresh perspectives on harvesting low‐dimensional magnetism.

Interfacially Enhanced Superconductivity in Fe(Te,Se)/Bi 4 Te 3 Heterostructures

Realizing topological superconductivity by integrating high-transition-temperature (T C ) superconductors with topological insulators can open new paths for quantum computing applications. Here, a new approach is reported for increasing the superconducting transition temperature $T^{onset}_C$ by interfacing the unconventional superconductor Fe(Te,Se) with the topological insulator Bi–Te system in the low-Se doping regime, near where superconductivity vanishes in the bulk. The critical finding is that the $T^{onset}_C$ of Fe(Te,Se) increases from nominally non-superconducting to as high as 12.5 K when Bi 2 Te3 is replaced with the topological phase Bi 4 Te 3 . Interfacing Fe(Te,Se) with Bi4Te3 is also found to be critical for stabilizing superconductivity in monolayer films where $T^{onset}_C$ can be as high as 6 K. Measurements of the electronic and crystalline structure of the Bi 4 Te 3 layer reveal that a large electron transfer, epitaxial strain, and novel chemical reduction processes are critical factors for the enhancement of superconductivity. This novel route for enhancing T C in an important epitaxial system provides new insight on the nature of interfacial superconductivity and a platform to identify and utilize new electronic phases.

Direct Imaging of Hydrogen‐Driven Dislocation and Strain Field Evolution in a Stainless Steel Grain

Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) poses a significant challenge to the durability of materials used in hydrogen production and utilization. Disentangling the competing nanoscale mechanisms driving HE often relies on simulations and electron-transparent sample techniques, limiting experimental insights into hydrogen-induced dislocation behavior in bulk materials. This study employs in situ Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction imaging to track three-dimensional (3D) dislocation and strain field evolution during hydrogen charging in a bulk grain of austenitic 316 stainless steel. Tracking a single dislocation reveals hydrogen-enhanced mobility and relaxation, consistent with dislocation dynamics simulations. Subsequent observations reveal dislocation unpinning and climb processes, likely driven by osmotic forces. Additionally, nanoscale strain analysis around the dislocation core directly measures hydrogen-induced elastic shielding. These findings experimentally validate theoretical predictions and offer mechanistic insights into hydrogen-driven dislocation behavior. The quantified nanoscale phenomena serve as critical inputs for multiscale modeling frameworks to predict bulk material responses and accelerate the development of HE-resistant alloys.
