Thin-Film Thermocouple Technology Demonstrated for Reliable Heat Transfer Measurements

Exploratory work is in progress to apply thin-film thermocouples to localized heat transfer measurements on turbine engine vanes and blades. The emerging thin-film thermocouple technology shows great potential to improve the accuracy of local heat transfer measurements. To verify and master the experimental methodology of thin-film thermocouples, the NASA Lewis Research Center conducted a proof-of-concept experiment in a controlled environment before applying the thin-film sensors to turbine tests.

Thermal Conductivity Estimation from Transient Test Data with Embedded Thermocouples using Genetic Algorithm Optimization

Inverse heat transfer methodology previously developed to estimate thermal properties of high temperature fibrous insulation from embedded thermocouples was applied to the thermoplastic polymer, polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK). A small experimental setup was utilized to test the PEEK sample between temperatures of 300 K and 525 K at atmospheric pressure. Cylindrical plugs of PEEK with three thermocouples embedded at various depths were incorporated in the test sample. The experimental PEEK thermocouple data were used as the boundary and initial conditions of a one-dimensional numerical thermal model to predict the internal temperatures of the material. The thermal conductivity of PEEK was estimated with the Continuous Genetic Algorithm optimization technique by searching for the coefficients of a functional form of thermal conductivity that minimized the difference between the experimentally measured and model predicted internal temperature values. The thermal testing, one-dimensional numerical thermal model, optimization algorithm, analysis, and results are presented.

Preliminary 3D Simulations of Anomalous Thermocouple Coupling to Surface Electric Fields

Anomalous measurements from subsurface thermocouples have been observed during re-entry of the Orion capsule (EFT-1 plugs). These measurements are considered anomalous because the amplitude and frequency of the inferred temperature modulations are too large to be due to plausible heating processes. Consequently, it is believed the anomalies are caused by electrical interference generated by the re-entry plasma. Quantifying these effects requires several steps: modeling the external plasma flows, modeling the plasma-surface interaction, and finally modeling the surface-thermocouple coupling. This paper addresses this last step using 3D finite element simulations of a wire embedded in a weakly conductive medium.

Connector for thermocouple leads saves costly wire, makes reliable connectors

A connector for use in the thermocouple circuits which is silver-brazed to the metal thermocouple sheath on one end and crimped over the insulation of the flexible lead on the other, assures protection against breakage and abrasion. A moisture-proof insulating material is used to encapsulate the wire junctions.

Liquid trap seals thermocouple leads

Liquid trap seals thermocouple leads coming out of a brazing retort that operates with a controlled atmosphere so that air cannot enter the retort and hydrogen cannot escape. The trap is fastened to a duct welded to the retort. Thermocouple leads are led out through the duct and trap, with the fluid forming a gastight seal between the atmosphere and the retort.

Modified thermocouple is effective from minus 250 deg to 5000 deg F

Modified, commercially available thermocouple which measures the temperature of a spacecraft heat shield, is capable of continuous measurement in the range of minus 250 deg to 5000 deg F. The modified thermocouples may be used inside metal treating furnaces in high temperature technology, and in certain corrosive environments.

Microminiature thermocouple monitors own installation

Microminiature thermocouple makes precision gas sidewall temperature readings inside large thrust chambers. It is installed by a technique whereby the sensor monitors its own installation to insure against thermal damage to the thermocouple and ensure minimum disturbance to chamber surfaces.

Thermocouples electrically checked while connected to data system

Constant current source is connected across the input of the millivolt measuring system to monitor the electrical continuity and resistance of multiple thermocouple installations without disconnecting them from a data system. This technique monitored gage thermocouple leads during the assembly and preflight testing of the Project Fire reentry packages.

Thermocouples easily installed in hard-to- get-to places

Thermocouple wires attached to charged capacitors are inserted in a drilled hole. An electric charge fuses the thermocouple wires to the host material. This method has shown excellent results in fusing nichrome, chromel, Inconel, and stainless steel wires to nickel, beryllium, iron, steel, Inconel, and stainless steel.

Study of fast response thermocouple measurement of temperatures in cryogenic gases

Thermocouples fabricated from uninsulated small diameter wire have fast reproducible response times. The thermocouple is thermally isolated from its supports by making the leads of sufficient length so that the heat conduction down the leads is small and assuming that the leads adjacent to the junction are subjected to the same thermal conditions.

Identification of thermocouple material

Fabrication of probes from a representative selection of materials used to make thermocouples identifies materials used in thermocouple junctions. Generating a thermoelectric electromotive between hot and cold junctions verifies whether or not the material in question is the same as the probe.

High-temperature, long-term drift of platinum-rhodium thermocouples

Contamination of thermocouples is minimized by use of pure alumina insulators and a controlled low-impurity-level high-vacuum environment. Average thermal electromotive force change for platinum-rhodium thermocouples was -2.8 deg K after 3700 hours exposure to a mean temperature of 1530 deg K.

High-temperature rapid-response thermocouple for reducing atmospheres

Thermocouple measures continuously in flowing gaseous hydrogen at temperatures up to 4000 deg F, in environments made hazardous by radiation, and where rapid response and calibration reproducibility are critically important. Thermocouple wires extend continuously, without splice or foreign material, from cold junction to probe's tip.
