Thick film magnetic nanoparticulate composites and method of manufacture thereof

Thick film magnetic/insulating nanocomposite materials, with significantly reduced core loss, and their manufacture are described. The insulator coated magnetic nanocomposite comprises one or more magnetic components, and an insulating component. The magnetic component comprises nanometer scale particles (about 1 to about 100 nanometers) coated by a thin-layered insulating phase. While the intergrain interaction between the immediate neighboring magnetic nanoparticles separated by the insulating phase provides the desired soft magnetic properties, the insulating material provides high resistivity, which reduces eddy current loss.

Evaluation of the EHL Film Thickness and Extreme Pressure Additives on Gear Surface Fatigue Life

Surface pitting fatigue life tests were conducted with seven lubricants, using AISI 9310 spur gears. The test lubricants can be classified as synthetic polyol-esters with various viscosities and additive packages. The lubricant with a viscosity that provided a specific film thickness greater than one and with an additive package produced gear surface fatigue lives that were 8.6 times that for lubricants with a viscosity that provided specific film thickness less than one. Lubricants with the same viscosity and similar additive packages gave equivalent gear surface fatigue lives.

Comparison of predicted and measured elastohydrodynamic film thickness in a 20-millimeter-bore ball bearing

Elastohydrodynamic film thicknesses were measured for a 20-mm bore ball bearing using the capacitance technique. The bearing was thrust loaded to 90, 445, and 778 N (20, 100, and 175 lb). The corresponding maximum contact stress on the inner race was 1.28, 2.09, and 2.45 GPa (185 000, 303,000, and 356, 000 psi). Test speeds ranged from 400 to 15,000 rpm. Measurements were taken with four different lubricants: (1) synthetic paraffinic; (2) synthetic paraffinic with additives; (3) synthetic type II aircraft oil; and (4) synthetic cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon traction fluid. The test bearing was mist lubricated. Test temperatures were 27, 65, and 121 C (80, 150, and 250 F). The measured results for the various test parameters were compared to theoretical predictions from computer programs. Also the data were plotted on dimensionless coordinates and compared to several classical isothermal theories.

Development of an all-metal thick film cost affective metallization system for solar cells

An economical thick film solar cell contact for high volume production of low cost silicon solar array modules was investigated. All metal screenable pastes using base metals were studied. Solar cells with junction depths varying by a factor of 3.3, with and without a deposited oxide coating were used. Cells were screened and fired by a two step firing process. Adhesion and metallurgical results are unsatisfactory. No electrical information is obtained due to inadequate contact adhesion.

The effect of surface roughness on the average film thickness between lubricated rollers

The Christensen theory of stochastic models for hydrodynamic lubrication of rough surfaces is extended to elastohydrodynamic lubrication between two rollers. The Grubin-type equation including asperity effects in the inlet region is derived. Solutions for the reduced pressure at the entrance as a function of the ratio of the average nominal film thickness to the rms surface roughness (in terms of standard deviation), have been obtained numerically. Results were obtained for purely transverse and purely longitudinal surface roughness for cases with or without slip. The reduced pressure is shown to decrease slightly by considering longitudinal surface roughness. Transverse surface roughness has a slight beneficial effect on the average film thickness at the inlet. The same approach was used to study the effect of surface roughness on lubrication between rigid rollers and lubrication of an infinitely-wide slider bearing. The effects of surface roughness are shown to be similar to those found in elastohydrodynamic contacts.

Evaluation of feasibility of measuring EHD film thickness associated with cryogenic fluids

The feasibility of measuring elastohydrodynamic (EHD) films as formed with a cryogenic (LN2) fluid is evaluated. Modifications were made to an existing twin disk EHD apparatus to allow for disk lubrication with liquid nitrogen. This disk apparatus is equipped with an X-ray system for measuring the thickness of any lubricant film that is formed between the disks. Several film thickness experiments were conducted with the apparatus which indicate that good lubrication films are filmed with LN2. In addition to the film thickness studies, failure analyses of three bearings were conducted. The HPOTP turbine end bearings had experienced axial loads of 36,000 to 44,000 N (8,000 to 10,000 lb). High continuous radial loads were also experienced, which were most likely caused by thermal growth of the inner race. The resulting high internal loads caused race spalling and ball wear to occur.

Elastohydrodynamic (EHD) film thickness measurements using optical interferometry were made of artificially produced dents and grooves under rolling and sliding conditions. These measurements are compared to stylus traces of the dent and groove profiles to determine the local deformation associated with micro-EHD pressure generation. The surface geometry associated with the dents and grooves became intimately involved in the lubrication process itself, creating local pressure variations that substantially deformed the local surface geometry, particularly under sliding conditions. The rolling results implied surface initiated fatigue, and the sliding results showed clearly the EHD surface interactions that must occur prior to scuffing failure.

Traction and film thickness measurements under starved elastohydrodynamic conditions

Traction measurements under starved elastohydrodynamic conditions were obtained for a point contact geometry. Simultaneous measurements of the film thickness and the locations of the inlet lubricant boundary were made optically. The thickness of a starved film for combination rolling and sliding conditions varies with the location of the inlet boundary in the same way found previously for pure rolling. A starved film was observed to possess greater traction than a flooded film for the same slide roll ratio. For a given slide roll ratio a starved film simply increases the shear rate in the Hertz region. The maximum shear rate depends on the degree of starvation and has no theoretical limit. Traction measurements under starved conditions were compared with flooded conditions under equivalent shear rates in the Hertz region. When the shear rates in the Hertz region were low and the film severely starved, the measured tractions were found to be much lower than expected.

The Effect of Sliding Speed on Film Thickness and Pressure Supporting Ability of a Point Contact Under Zero Entrainment Velocity Conditions

A unique tribometer is used to study film forming and pressure supporting abilities of point contacts at zero entrainment velocity (ZEV). Film thickness is determined using a capacitance technique, verified through comparisons of experimental results and theoretical elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) predictions for rolling contacts. Experiments are conducted using through hardened AISI 52 100 steel balls, Polyalphaolefin (PAO) 182 and Pentaerythritol Tetraheptanoate (PT) lubricants, and sliding speeds between 2.0 to 12.0 m/s. PAO 182 and PT are found to support pressures up to 1. 1 GPa and 0.67 GPa respectively. Protective lubricant films ranging in thickness between 90 to 2 10 nm for PAO 182 and 220 to 340 nm for PT are formed. Lubricants experience shear stresses between 14 to 22 MPa for PAO 182 and 7 to 16 MPa for PT at shear rates of 10(exp 7)/sec. The lubricant's pressure supporting ability most likely results from the combination of immobile films and its transition to a glassy solid at high pressures.

Third-sound propagation in thick films of superfluid He-4

Atkins' (1959) basic theory of third sound in thick films of superfluid He-4 is extended here to include a heat source for exciting third sound. A one-dimensional model obeying periodic boundary conditions is developed which can represent a variety of experimentally important configurations. General solutions for the model equations are found which give a complete description of third-sound waves in terms of displacement of the film surface, superfluid velocity, and temperature change as functions of space and time. Algebraic expressions for quantities that occur in general formulas are found for special excitation signals. The structure of third sound is calculated for the first time and the results are found to be inconsistent with previous findings. A direct method for accurately measuring the vaporization coefficient is also presented.

Effects of accumulated film layers on the accuracy of quartz film thickness monitors

The effect of accumulation layers on the accuracy of quartz thin-film thickness monitors is evaluated. Use of an expanded plane wave ultrasonic propagation theory correctly accounts for observed experimental data. The magnitude of the maximum errors calculated for simply reversing the order of a series of aluminum gold deposits is on the order of 5%. If one totally neglects intervening layers, multiple film propagation and nonlinearity can produce errors greater than 50%.

Improved thick film semiconductor/solar cell contacts

The postulated concept of low-temperature all-metal thick film electrodes is discussed. It is noted that the mechanical and metallurgical properties of the electrodes are excellent, but electrical parameters remain to be optimized.

Oil film thickness using airborne laser-induced oil fluorescence backscatter

Remote airborne measurement of oil film thickness on ocean surface using laser-induced water Raman backscatter is discussed. It is pointed out that the theoretical model of oil fluorescence by Horvath et al. (1971) contains the necessary constituents to provide for the natural background fluorescence that is also induced by the laser during the course of an oil thickness experiment. How the various parameters of the model are obtained from typical airborne profile data is discussed, and it is shown that the water Raman backscatter may be used to assist further in the application of the data. The regions or water types over which the technique might be most useful or applicable are discussed.
