VERA Transient Capability to Support ATF/High Burnup Fuel/HALEU Conversion

The Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA) was developed under the Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors (CASL). The goal of this new code suite was to provide high-fidelity, whole-core simulation using pin-resolved physics. Extensive steady-state validation of VERA has been performed for reactor cycle depletion simulations and other related simulations. Transient simulations were not a major component of the CASL work; reactivity insertion accidents (RIAs) received most of the focus. However, there are other design basis accidents (DBA) which are of great importance for reactor design and licensing.

Simulation of transient flow in a shock tunnel and a high Mach number nozzle

A finite volume Navier-Stokes code was used to simulate the shock reflection and nozzle starting processes in an axisymmetric shock tube and a high Mach number nozzle. The simulated nozzle starting processes were found to match the classical quasi-1-D theory and some features of the experimental measurements. The shock reflection simulation illustrated a new mechanism for the driver gas contamination of the stagnated test gas.

Modeling of Inductive Constant Power Load for Electromagnetic-Transient Simulations-Part II

This paper improves the dynamic constant power (CP) load model that was published in Part I, which is appropriate for electromagnetic-transient (EMT). The improved model conserves all features of its predecessor. For instance, it maintains a fixed power consumption (both active and reactive parts) and a fixed power factor for loads that are predominantly inductive. Furthermore, as the proposed model is a time-dependent system, it is applicable to both sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal case studies. However, the previous model cannot be easily integrated with numeric solvers because it simulated load data over one cycle all together, not sequentially in a time-step manner, due to the limitation involved with the power factor. The improved version, on the contrary, allows the load to be simulated at every time step, which would facilitate its integration with numeric solvers. The model's validity is confirmed by comparing its response with data that is synthesized from constant impedance load, and the result is satisfactory.

Verification and Validation of a Modified Numerical Algorithm for Simulation of Transient Unconfined Groundwater Flow

This report extends verification and validation testing of the NUFT package of codes (Nitao 2000a,b) to the US1P module of code designed for simulation of single-phase mixed or “coupled” saturated and unsaturated (or “variably saturated”) groundwater flow. Importantly, the verification and validation testing of US1P in this report includes performance evaluation of a modified numerical algorithm that was not included in prior quality assurance (QA) of the NUFT package by Carle et al. (2014) for Underground Test Area (UGTA) project activities, which are directed at assessment of radionuclide contamination in groundwater sourced from underground nuclear test locations at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). An immediate purpose of this report is to provide QA for ongoing large-scale, three-dimensional (3-D) groundwater flow modeling of transient water levels associated with longterm water supply pumping and underground nuclear testing at the NNSS (Jackson and Fenelon, 2018; Jackson et al., 2021). For UGTA activities, the QA refers to the standards of ASTM (1996) for verification and validation testing of groundwater modeling codes.

Simulations of Transient Phenomena in Liquid Rocket Feed Systems

Valve systems in rocket propulsion systems and testing facilities are constantly subject to dynamic events resulting from the timing of valve motion leading to unsteady fluctuations in pressure and mass flow. Such events can also be accompanied by cavitation, resonance, system vibration leading to catastrophic failure. High-fidelity dynamic computational simulations of valve operation can yield important information of valve response to varying flow conditions. Prediction of transient behavior related to valve motion can serve as guidelines for valve scheduling, which is of crucial importance in engine operation and testing. Feed components operating in cryogenic regimes can also experience cavitation based instabilities leading to large scale shedding of vapor clouds and pressure oscillations. In this paper, we present simulations of the diverse unsteady phenomena related to valve and feed systems that include valve stall, valve timing studies as well as two different forms of cavitation instabilities in components utilized in the test loop.

A nonrecursive order N preconditioned conjugate gradient: Range space formulation of MDOF dynamics

While excellent progress has been made in deriving algorithms that are efficient for certain combinations of system topologies and concurrent multiprocessing hardware, several issues must be resolved to incorporate transient simulation in the control design process for large space structures. Specifically, strategies must be developed that are applicable to systems with numerous degrees of freedom. In addition, the algorithms must have a growth potential in that they must also be amenable to implementation on forthcoming parallel system architectures. For mechanical system simulation, this fact implies that algorithms are required that induce parallelism on a fine scale, suitable for the emerging class of highly parallel processors; and transient simulation methods must be automatically load balancing for a wider collection of system topologies and hardware configurations. These problems are addressed by employing a combination range space/preconditioned conjugate gradient formulation of multi-degree-of-freedom dynamics. The method described has several advantages. In a sequential computing environment, the method has the features that: by employing regular ordering of the system connectivity graph, an extremely efficient preconditioner can be derived from the 'range space metric', as opposed to the system coefficient matrix; because of the effectiveness of the preconditioner, preliminary studies indicate that the method can achieve performance rates that depend linearly upon the number of substructures, hence the title 'Order N'; and the method is non-assembling. Furthermore, the approach is promising as a potential parallel processing algorithm in that the method exhibits a fine parallel granularity suitable for a wide collection of combinations of physical system topologies/computer architectures; and the method is easily load balanced among processors, and does not rely upon system topology to induce parallelism.

Beam Dynamics Simulations of Transient Beam Loading Effects in the 10GeV EIC Electron Storage Ring

We report on beam dynamics studies of transient beam loading effects in the 10 GeV EIC electron storage ring [1]. The studies are carried out with time-dependent Vlasov-Fokker-Planck simulations performed with the parallel, particle tracking code SPACE [2], which allows to follow self-consistently the dynamics of h bunches, where h in the number of RF buckets, in arbitrary multi-bunch configurations. The specific goal of the numerical simulations is to determine stable RF cavity settings under heavy beam loading. We also study the option to operate with a passive, third-harmonic cavity (3HC) system for bunch lengthening, addressing both stability and the performance limitation due to a gap in the uniform filling pattern for ion clearing.

Enabling Catalog Simulations of Transient and Variable Sources Based on LSST Cadence Strategies

The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved.. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) project will conduct a 10 year multi-band survey starting in 2022. Observing strategies for this survey are being actively investigated, and the science capabilities can be best forecasted on the basis of simulated strategies from the LSST Operations Simulator (OpSim). This paper describes the way in which OpSim simulates a stochastic realization of the sequence of LSST pointings over the survey duration, and is based on a model of the observatory (including telescope) and historical data of observational conditions. OpSim outputs contain a record of each simulated pointing of the survey along with a complete characterization of the pointing in terms of observing conditions, and some useful quantities derived from the characteristics of the pointing. Thus, each record can be efficiently used to derive the properties of observations of all astrophysical sources found in that pointing. However, in order to obtain the time series of observations (light curves) of a set of sources, it is often more convenient to compute all observations of an astrophysical source, and iterate over sources. In this document, we describe the open source python package OpSimSummary, which allows for a convenient reordering. The objectives of this package are to provide users with an Application Programming Interface for accessing all such observations and summarizing this information in the form of intermediate data products usable by third party software such as SNANA, thereby also bridging the gap between official LSST products and preexisting simulation codes.

Control and Simulation of a Grid-Forming Inverter for Hybrid PV-Battery Plants in Power System Black Start

Power system restoration is an important part of system planning. Power utilities are required to maintain black start capable generators that can energize the transmission system and provide cranking power to non-blackstart capable generators. Traditionally, hydro and diesel units are used as black start capable generators. With the increased penetration of bulk size solar farms, inverter based generation can play an important role in faster and parallel black start thus ensuring system can be brought back into service without the conventional delays that can be expected with limited black start generators. Inverter-based photovoltaic (PV) power plants have advantages that are suitable for black start. This paper proposes the modeling, control, and simulation of a grid-forming inverter-based PV-battery power plant that can be used as a black start unit. The inverter control includes both primary and secondary control loops to imitate the control of a conventional synchronous machine. The proposed approach is verified using a test system modified from the IEEE 9-bus system in the time-domain electromagnetic transient simulation tool PSCAD. The simulation results shows voltage and frequency stability during a multi-step black-start and network energization process.

The simulation of transient statistics of the Southern Hemispheric circulation by the GLAS seasonal cycle model: Preliminary results

The general circulation of the Southern Hemisphere is quite different from that of the Northern Hemisphere in many important ways. These include the barotropic nature of the stationary waves and the presence of a strong barotropic component to the mean zonal wind, the lack of a strong seasonal dependence of the transient eddies, and the dominant role played by eddies with periods less than 10 days compared to longer period fluctuations. Such differences attest to the importance of the altered nature of the orographic and thermal land-sea forcings in the Southern Hemisphere compared to the Northern Hemisphere. Some of the important features of the Southern Hemisphere circulation as simulated by the GLAS Seasonal Cycle Model (SCM) are presented. The geographical patterns of local variability and their seasonal shifts in the SCM are discussed and compared to observations.

Enhanced Large-Signal Stability Method for Grid-Forming Inverters During Current Limiting: Preprint

Grid-forming (GFM) inverters are a promising technology for the widespread integration of renewable energy sources in future power systems. As a key element of GFM inverter control, the primary controller governs the internal reference voltage and angle. During contingencies in the grid---such as faults, voltage drops, or frequency and phase jumps---an inverter can be forced into a current-limiting mode of operation modulating inverter dynamics, and, as a result, it is prone to losing synchronism with the grid. In this paper, we propose a novel GFM primary control method with an additional synchronization term that naturally activates during contingencies to improve the dynamic response. The method allows the inverter to remain synchronized with the grid, which improves the inverter's dynamic behavior both during and after current-limiting grid conditions and enhances grid support, including voltage support using full current capacity. The method is demonstrated for voltage, frequency, and phase jumps both in a single-machine-to-infinite-bus and a network-wide electromagnetic transient simulation of the IEEE 14-bus system with 5 GFM inverters. The simulations provide insights into the proposed synchronization method and confirm the high potential of the method, which robustly secures synchronism under severe contingencies.

Mechanism Analysis of Wind Turbine Var Oscillations

Electromagnetic transient simulation of parallel connected 4-MW type-3 wind turbines based on original equipment manufacturer's real-code turbine model shows 1.2-Hz turbine-turbine oscillations in reactive power. This letter reveals why such oscillations occur in the individual var measurement, while being insignificant in the total var measurement, regardless of the varying grid impedance. We adopt two analysis approaches: open-loop single-input single-output analysis and network decomposition. The two approaches differ in their treatment of turbine-network interaction. The open-loop analysis shows that the turbine-turbine oscillation mode is due to an open-loop system pole being attracted to an open-loop system zero. Furthermore, we use network decomposition method to explain why this mode is observable in individual vars while not observable in the total var. The entire system of n -turbines can be viewed as n decoupled circuits. For the two-turbine case, the system has an aggregated mode and a turbine-turbine oscillation mode. Here, the aggregated mode is associated with a circuit associated with the total var, while the turbine-turbine oscillation mode is associated with the var difference and is insensitive to the grid parameters.

High temperature creep model development using in-situ 3-D DIC techniques during a simulated LOCA transient

In-situ strain measurements of fuel cladding can enable high-throughput data collection and validation to support accelerated qualification of cladding materials. Here, in this work, 3D digital image correlation was used to map strain for both Zircaloy-4 (Zry-4) and Cr-coated Zry-4 during two types of cladding rupture experiments: isobaric temperature ramp tests at 5 °C/s and isothermal pressure jump tests at 600 °C. Zry-4 strain data initially showed a temperature dependence expected for creep deformation, yet a shift to a new plastic deformation mechanism not reported in literature dominated during the finals seconds prior to rupture. Cr-coated Zry-4 did not show the change in deformation mechanism at the end of life and showed a delay in measurable creep deformation. Stress dependences were similar for Zry-4 and Cr/Zry-4 during pressure jump tests. Cr-coatings were found to decrease the strain rate during both testing scenarios. Creep parameters were calculated to support modelling efforts regarding design basis accidents.
