Towards An Autonomous sUAS Operating in UTM TCL4+ and STEReO Fire Scenario

This study presents two sUAS payload point designs for enabling autonomous BVLOS flight in UTM TCL4+ urban environments and STEReO fire responses. The payload components for the first payload include an onboard computer and a 360 LIDAR. The second payload, which is a continuation of the first, adds a range finder altimeter, downward-facing monocular camera, forward-facing thermal and visible light dual camera, vehicle-to-vehicle radio modem, and Li-ion smart battery. The components are mounted on enclosed structural frames that were designed in-house. Placing the autonomy components onboard leverages the advantages of sUAS over manned aircraft such as low-cost, quick response time, and increased scalability. Autonomous capabilities include embedded processing, SLAM, object and fire detection, and V2V communication. Data processing is conducted onboard the aircraft to eliminate the dependency on a groundstation downlink. The first iteration of the payload is tested in both simulation and flight tests while the continuing iteration is in development.

Wildfire monitoring using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles operating under UTM (STEReO)

STEReO (Scalable Traffic Management for Emergency Response Operations) project at NASA Ames is designed to provide UTM (UAS Traffic Management) services to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) used for natural disaster response scenarios like wildfire and hurricanes. This will facilitate the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in regions where UAVs are currently prohibited to fly. In this paper we describe a complete architecture of using UAVs for wild fire monitoring in this STEReO environment. We simulate a complete fire monitoring scenario in an high fidelity simulation environment. The simulation consists of a fire drill in the vicinity of Redding airport, one of the test sites for CAL-FIRE. The autonomous vehicle connects to the STEReO systems and gathers information of other operation in the vicinity. The vehicle then uses on-board path planners and decision making algorithms for fire monitoring and mapping. In this paper the vehicle on-board architecture is described in details and the requirements to fly and interact with the STEReO system is discussed.

Studying Human-System Interaction within the UTM System

Over five years, NASA, together with partnering organizations, has been developing and successfully demonstrating the maturing capabilities of the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Traffic Management (UTM) system and its ability to support communication and coordination among small UAS operations through a series of flight tests. During these flight tests, human-system interaction (HSI) elements were also explored in order to identify the barriers to implementation as human operators transitionally fulfill roles that will be ultimately tasked to future automation. Throughout the tests, similar issues were regularly documented and are expected to persist if not formally addressed by consistent procedures or regulation. Documented here, along with suggested mitigations, are the most frequently noted HSI items, which include operator training, data standardization, and information quantity. .

UTM Concepts and Use Cases

The presentation provides an overview of the UTM Research Transition Team (RTT) and the role of the Concepts and Use Cases Working Group (CWG) as part of the joint NASA-FAA effort. The deliverables, role in tests/demonstrations, future work, and summary impact of the CWG are the main areas covered.

NASA Listening Session on Public Safety Needs for UTM

NASA is working with Industry and FAA to enable beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) unmanned aerial systems (UAS) operations wherever it is needed. The objective of this presentation is to widen NASA's reach of Public Operator involvement in the UTM BVLOS space. Collaboration between NASA and Public Operations is needed to help define how services can be approved and applied to enable BVLOS operations in the nation's airspace.

UTM Public Operators Outreach: Drone Responders

NASA is working with Industry and FAA to enable beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) unmanned aerial systems (UAS) operations wherever it is needed. The purpose of this presentation is to widen NASA's reach of Public Operator involvement in the UTM BVLOS space and inform them of the fundamental principles of UTM/BVLOS. Collaboration between NASA and Public Operations is needed to help define how services can be approved and applied to enable BVLOS operations in the nation's airspace.

BOREAS HYD-8 DEM Data Over the NSA-MSA and SSA-MSA in the UTM Projection

The BOREAS HYD-8 team focused on describing the scaling behavior of water and carbon flux processes at local and regional scales. These DEMs were produced from digitized contours at a cell resolution of 100 meters. Vector contours of the area were used as input to a software package that interpolates between contours to create a DEM representing the terrain surface. The vector contours had a contour interval of 25 feet. The data cover the BOREAS MSAs of the SSA and NSA and are given in a UTM map projection. Most of the elevation data from which the DEM was produced were collected in the 1970s or 1980s. The data are stored in binary, image format files. The data files are available on a CD-ROM (see document number 20010000884) or from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC).

Real-Time Path Planning for Multi-copters flying in UTM -TCL4

NASA's UAS Traffic management (UTM) -TCL-4 focuses on safely enabling large scale small UAS oper- ations in low altitude airspace in dense urban regions. This paper presents an operational architecture of an autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle operating in TCL4. An on-line path planning scheme is proposed which can effectively plan for feasible paths in real time with TCL-4 constraints. An end to end system is designed and tested in high fidelity Reflection architecture which demonstrates the feasibility of the approach.

Future Airspace Operations: UTM-Inspired Air Traffic Management

We need to prepare airspace system to accommodate diversity, density and complexity of future operations. Current system will reach its peak due to use of old technology and human-in-the-loop nature to accommodate new entrants. Talk will focus on how an ATM system can be made ready to meet the future needs. Author will discuss a number of lessons based on Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM) could be leveraged to prepare for future.
