Advanced Reactor Control and Operations (ARCO): A University Research Facility for Developing Optimized Digital Control Rooms

The Advanced Reactor Control and Operations (ARCO) facility was constructed in January 2018 to serve as a test bed for advanced reactor control rooms and operator support systems. Since then, it has supported human-machine interface user experience research, fault detection and mitigation technology development, control room concept of operations development, and remote operations research. ARCO serves as the control room for the Compact Integral Effects Test (CIET) facility, which replicates the primary-side flow paths and thermal-hydraulic behavior of a fluoride-salt-cooled high-temperature reactor (FHR) using simulant fluids and scaling principles. New reactor designs feature different operating conditions and scenarios than those in existing reactors. ARCO supports the research and development of digital tools for operator communications, intuitive real-time data analysis, online health monitoring and prognostics, and control room cybersecurity. By integrating these different technologies, ARCO acts as a prototypical control system to iteratively develop methods and tools of operation in advanced small modular nuclear reactors. This paper describes the features of and challenges to operating advanced small modular reactors underlying the design basis for ARCO and its operator support systems.

High pressure neutron diffraction on WAND 2 with a Paris-Edinburgh press

The Paris-Edinburgh press is a widely available, highly adaptable pressure cell commonly used while collecting neutron scattering data. Here, we detail the use of the VX3 and VX5 Paris-Edinburgh presses on the Wide-Angle Neutron Diffractometer (WAND 2 ) at the High Flux Isotope Reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. We first give a detailed overview of the instrument setup and alignment capabilities used at WAND 2 . We then demonstrate the high pressure capabilities through three examples. In this work, the first example focuses on diffraction data obtained from a lithium-diamond mixture to 10 GPa with the use of single toroidal cubic boron nitride anvils. Other examples include the room temperature compressions of germanium (up to 16 GPa) and the mineral malachite with double toroidal sintered diamond anvils. This work thereby represents the first studies above 10 GPa at the High Flux Isotope Reactor and opens the door for future user experiments at these elevated pressures.

Improving transition to IPv6-only via RFC8925 and IPv4 DNS Interventions

Nine years have passed since the American Registry for Internet Numbers exhausted its allocation of Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) addresses, and four years have passed since the United States Government mandated federal agencies to complete the transition to Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). Despite the IPv4 address shortage and IPv6 mandate, Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) are still struggling to sunset IPv4. As demonstrated on SC23’s SC23v6 wireless network, newer tooling such as RFC8925 allows clients to disable their IPv4 protocol stack while retaining legacy IP connectivity via the RFC6145 translation algorithm. However, SC23v6 wireless clients without RFC8925 support or a disabled IPv6 stack would continue to receive internet access via legacy IPv4. This paper introduces a method of using poisoned IPv4 Domain Name System (DNS) records to gracefully inform IPv4-only clients at SC24’s SC24v6 wireless network about their inability to use the current version of internet protocol, with a goal of minimal impact to RFC8925 and dual-stack clients. When implemented as designed, this method may improve supportability and user experience of IPv6-only deployments at FFRDCs.

TangibleData: Interactive Data Visualization with Mid-Air Haptics

In this paper, we investigate the effects of mid-air haptics in interactive 3D data visualization. We build an interactive 3D data visualization tool that adapts hand gestures and mid-air haptics to provide tangible interaction in VR using ultrasound haptic feedback on 3D data visualization. We consider two types of 3D visualization datasets and provide different data encoding methods for haptic representations. Two user experiments are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of our approach. The first experimental results show that adding a mid-air haptic modality can be beneficial regardless of noise conditions and useful for handling occlusion or discerning density and volume information. The second experiment results further show the strengths and weaknesses of direct touch and indirect touch modes. Our findings can shed light on designing and implementing a tangible interaction on 3D data visualization with mid-air haptic feedback.

Towards Seamless Interoperability of MPI-OpenMP Applications

A chasm exists between mathematical software libraries written for MPI-based applications and those written for OpenMP applications. Recently, however, PETSc enables the simple use of its MPI-based linear solvers from OpenMP applications. Separately, the MPICH MPI development team has started a new project to allow almost seamless MPI use in OpenMP applications. Both proposed approaches would result in a similar user experience. Here, we discuss the reasons for these projects and their potential for providing more numerical library choices for OpenMP applications, including the unlimited assortment of linear solvers available in PETSc. In addition, we present the performance of an application using the first approach, demonstrating its efficacy.

Factors Influencing Adoption of Pooled Rideshare An Explorative Study on User-Centered Design and Services

The rise of real-time information communication through smartphones and wireless networks enabled the growth of ridesharing services. While personal rideshare services (individuals ride alone or with people they know) initially dominated the market, the popularity of pooled ridesharing (individuals share rides with strangers) has grown globally. However, pooled rideshare remains less common in the U.S., where personal vehicle usage is still the norm. Vehicle design and rideshare services may need to be tailored to user preferences to increase pooled rideshare adoption. A national U.S. survey ( N = 5,385) used exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to identify four key factors influencing riders’ willingness to consider pooled rideshare: comfort/ease of use, convenience, vehicle technology/accessibility, and passenger safety. Understanding and implementing these user-centered design principles and service-related factors may be critical for increasing the future use of pooled rideshare services

Anomaly Detection in Accelerator Facilities Using Machine Learning

Synchrotron light sources are user facilities and usually run about 5000 hours per year to support many beamlines operations in parallel. Reliability is a key parameter to evaluate machine performance. Even many facilities have achieved >95% beam reliability, there are still many hours of unscheduled downtime and every hour lost is a waste of operation costs along with a big impact on individual scheduled user experiments. Preventive maintenance on subsystems and quick recovery from machine trips are the basic strategies to achieve high reliability, which heavily depends on experts’ dedication. Recently, SLAC, APS, and NSLS-II collaborated to develop machine-learning-based approaches aiming to solve both situations, hardware failure prediction and machine failure diagnosis to find the root sources. In this paper, we report our facility operation status, development progress, and plans.

mosartwmpy: A Python implementation of the MOSART-WM coupled hydrologic routing and water management model

mosartwmpy is a Python implementation of the Model for Scale Adaptive River Transport with Water Management (MOSART-WM). This new version retains the functionality of the legacy model (written in FORTRAN) while providing new features to enhance user experience and extensibility. MOSART is a large-scale river-routing model used to study riverine dynamics of water, energy, and biogeochemistry cycles across local, regional, and global scales (Li et al., 2013). The WM component introduced by Voisin et al. (2013) represents river regulation through reservoir storage and release operations, diversions from reservoir releases, and allocation to sectoral water demands. Each reservoir release is independently calibrated using long-term mean monthly inflow into the reservoir, long-term mean monthly demand associated with this reservoir, and reservoir goals (flood control, irrigation, recreation, etc.). Generic monthly pre-release rules and storage targets are set up for individual reservoirs; however, those releases are updated annually for inter-annual variability (dry or wet year) and daily for environmental constraints such as flow minimum release and minimum/maximum storage levels. The WM model allows an evaluation of the impact of water management over multiple river basins at once (global, continental scales) and with consistent representation of human operations over the full domain.

kokkos-fft: A shared-memory FFT for the Kokkos ecosystem

kokkos-fft provides a unified, performance-portable interface for Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) within the Kokkos ecosystem (C. Trott et al., 2021). It seamlessly integrates with leading local FFT libraries including FFTW, cuFFT, rocFFT, and oneMKL. Designed for simplicity and efficiency, kokkos-fft offers a user experience akin to numpy.fft for in-place and out-of-place transforms, while leveraging the raw speed of vendor-optimized libraries. A demonstration solving 2D Hasegawa-Wakatani turbulence with the Fourier spectral method illustrates how kokkos-fft can deliver significant speedups over Python-based alternatives without drastically increasing code complexity, empowering researchers to perform high-performance FFTs simply and effectively.
