Exact results in softly broken supersymmetric chiral gauge theories with flavor

We present exact results in softly broken supersymmetric SU⁡(𝑁 𝐶 ) chiral gauge theories with charged fermions in one antisymmetric, 𝑁 𝐹 fundamental, and 𝑁 𝐶 + 𝑁 𝐹 − 4 antifundamental representations. We achieve this by considering the supersymmetric version of these theories and utilizing anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking at a scale 𝑚 ≪ Λ to generate a vacuum. The connection to nonsupersymmetric theories is then conjectured in the limit 𝑚 → ∞. For odd 𝑁 𝐶 , we determine the massless fermions and unbroken global symmetries in the infrared. For even 𝑁 𝐶 , we find global symmetries are nonanomalous and no massless fermions. In all cases, the symmetry breaking patterns differ from what the tumbling hypothesis would suggest.

Double Kerr-Schild spacetimes and the Newman-Penrose map

The Newman-Penrose map, which is closely related to the classical double copy, associates certain exact solutions of Einstein’s equations with self-dual solutions of the vacuum Maxwell equations. Here we initiate an extension of the Newman-Penrose map to a broader class of spacetimes. As an example, we apply principles from the Newman-Penrose map to associate a self-dual gauge field to the Kerr-Taub-NUT-(A)dS spacetime and we show that the result agrees with previously studied examples of classical double copies. The corresponding field strength exhibits a discrete electric-magnetic duality that is distinct from its (Hodge star) self-dual property.

Trinification from E 6 symmetry breaking

In the context of E 6 Grand Unified Theories (GUTs), an intriguing possibility for symmetry breaking to the Standard Model (SM) group involves an intermediate stage characterized by either SU(3) × SU(3) × SU(3) (trinification) or SU(6) × SU(2). The more common choices of SU(5) and SO(10) GUT symmetry groups do not offer such breaking chains. We argue that the presence of a real (rank 2 tensor) representation 650 of E 6 in the scalar sector is the minimal and likely only reasonable possibility to obtain one of the novel intermediate stages. We analyze the renormalizable scalar potential of a single copy of the 650 and find vacuum solutions that support regularly embedded subgroups SU(3) × SU(3) × SU(3), SU(6) × SU(2), and SO(10) × U(1), as well as specially embedded subgroups F 4 and SU(3) × G 2 that do not contain the SM gauge symmetry. We show that for a suitable choice of parameters, each of the regular cases can be obtained as the lowest among the analyzed minima in the potential.

Topology and spectral entanglement in cavity-mediated photon scattering

Here, we develop a microscopic diagrammatic theory for cavity-mediated photon scattering in a topological one-dimensional insulator described by the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model. Within the velocity-gauge formulation, we derive the photon self-energy and vertex corrections arising from virtual electron–hole excitations coupled to a quantized cavity mode, and we evaluate the resulting polariton dispersion and two-photon correlation spectra. Our analysis shows that vacuum fluctuations of the cavity field induce a momentum-resolved self-energy that mixes conduction and valence bands through virtual photon exchange, producing interband hybridization and avoided crossings in the electronic dispersion. This “cavity dressing” is symmetry-dependent, vanishing at the Brillouin-zone edge where the dipole matrix element is zero, and its strength is controlled by the spatial coherence range ζ ≈ (l c /a) 2 of virtual excitations. We further examine how the cavity modifies nonlinear optical observables, including the Kerr nonlinearity and biphoton spectral entanglement, and identify the regimes where these effects become sensitive to the underlying topological phase. The theoretical framework established here provides a unified description of light–matter coupling in topological and polaritonic systems, bridging solid-state cavity QED with the emerging field of cavity-modified quantum materials. Our results suggest that engineered photonic environments can coherently reshape the electronic landscape of topological insulators, offering new routes to control collective electronic and optical phenomena through vacuum-field fluctuations.

Mass generation in an Abelian gauge theory with multiple scalar fields and no tree-level dimensionful couplings

We study the Abelian Higgs model with multiple scalar fields, but without mass terms. Solving the model nonperturbatively order-by-order in the number of scalar fields, we find that radiative corrections generate masses for the scalar and gauge boson, without spontaneous symmetry breaking. The mass scales are set by the Λ -parameter of the electroweak running coupling, thereby naturally avoiding the hierarchy problem. No part of our calculation employs a weak-coupling expansion, and we find that the perturbative vacuum is metastable, and hence must decay to the stable nonperturbative vacuum of the theory, which we identify. Although the field content of our Lagrangian is standard, our results predict the existence of two heavy scalar resonances in addition to the Higgs. We believe that these predicted resonances will ultimately allow experimentalists to discriminate between our method and standard solutions of the Higgs model. Asymptotic structure of higher dimensional Yang-Mills theory

Using the covariant phase space formalism, we construct the phase space for non-Abelian gauge theories in (d+2)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime for any d ≥ 2, including the edge modes that symplectically pair to the low energy degrees of freedom of the gauge field. Despite the fact that the symplectic form in odd and even-dimensional spacetimes appear ostensibly different, we demonstrate that both cases can be treated in a unified manner by utilizing the shadow transform. Upon quantization, we recover the algebra of the vacuum sector of the Hilbert space and derive a Ward identity that implies the leading soft gluon theorem in (d+2)-dimensional spacetime.

Fine-tuned vs. natural supersymmetry: what does the string landscape predict?

A vast array of (metastable) vacuum solutions arise from string compactifications, each leading to different 4-d laws of physics. The space of these solutions, known as the string landscape, allows for an environmental solution to the cosmological constant problem. We examine the possibility of an environmental solution to the gauge hierarchy problem. We argue that the landscape favors softly broken supersymmetric models over particle physics models containing quadratic divergences, such as the Standard Model. We present a scheme for computing relative probabilities for supersymmetric models to emerge from the landscape. The probabilities are related to the likelihood that the derived value of the weak scale lies within the Agrawal et al. (ABDS) allowed window of values leading to atoms as we know them. This then favors natural SUSY models over unnatural (SUSY and other) models via a computable probability measure.

Supersymmetry and the celestial Jacobi identity

In this paper we study the simplifying effects of supersymmetry on celestial OPEs at both tree and loop level. We find at tree level that theories with unbroken supersymmetry around a stable vacuum have celestial soft current algebras satisfying the Jacobi identity, and we show at one loop that celestial OPEs in these theories have no double poles.

$T\overline{T}$, black holes and negative strings

String theory on AdS 3 has a solvable single-trace irrelevant deformation that is closely related to $T\overline{T}$. For one sign of the coupling, it leads to an asymptotically linear dilaton spacetime, and a corresponding Hagedorn spectrum. For the other, the resulting spacetime has a curvature singularity at a finite radial location, and an upper bound on the energies of states. Beyond the singularity, the signature of spacetime is flipped and there is an asymptotically linear dilaton boundary at infinity. We study the properties of black holes and fundamental strings in this spacetime, and find a sensible picture. The singularity does not give rise to a hard ultraviolet wall for excitations -one must include the region beyond it to understand the theory. The size of black holes diverges as their energy approaches the upper bound, as does the location of the singularity. Fundamental strings pass smoothly through the singularity, but if their energy is above the upper bound, their trajectories are singular. From the point of view of the boundary at infinity, this background can be thought of as a vacuum of Little String Theory which contains a large number of negative strings.

Milli-magnetic monopole dark matter and the survival of galactic magnetic fields

A bstract Dark sectors with Abelian gauge symmetries can interact with ordinary matter via kinetic mixing. In such scenarios, magnetic monopoles of a broken dark U(1) will appear in our sector as confined milli-magnetically charged objects under ordinary electromagnetism. Halo ellipticity constraints are shown to significantly bound the strength of dark magnetic Coulomb monopole interactions. The bound magnetic monopole ground state, which in vacuum is stable and has no magnetic charge or moment, is shown to become quantum mechanically unstable in the presence of an external, ordinary magnetic field. If these states contribute sizably to the local dark matter density, they extract significant energy from the galactic magnetic field. We revise and extend this “Parker Bound” on galactic magnetic energy loss to milli-magnetic monopoles which leads to the strongest existing constraints on these states, satisfying our halo ellipticity bounds, over a wide range of magnetic monopole masses.

Chiral algebra, localization, modularity, surface defects, and all that

We study the 2D vertex operator algebra (VOA) construction in 4D N = 2 superconformal field theories on S 3 × S 1 , focusing on both old puzzles and new observations. The VOA lives on a two-torus T 2 ⊂ S 3 × S 1 , it is 1 2 Z -graded, and this torus is equipped with the natural choice of spin structure (1,0) for the Z + 1 2 -graded operators, corresponding to the NS sector vacuum character. By analyzing the possible refinements of the Schur index that preserves the VOA, we find that it admits discrete deformations, which allows access to the remaining spin structures (1,1), (0,1), and (0,0), of which the latter two involve the inclusion of a particular surface defect. For Lagrangian theories, we perform the detailed analysis: we describe the natural supersymmetric background, perform localization, and derive the gauged symplectic boson action on a torus in any spin structure. In the absence of flavor fugacities, the 2D and 4D path integrals precisely match, including the Casimir factors. We further analyze the 2D theory: we identify its integration cycle and the two-point functions and interpret flavor holonomies as screening charges in the VOA. Next, we make some observations about modularity; the T-transformation acts on our four partition functions and lifts to a large diffeomorphism on S 3 × S 1 . More interestingly, we generalize the four partition functions on the torus to an infinite family labeled by both the spin structure and the integration cycle inside the complexified maximal torus of the gauge group. Members of this family transform into one another under the full modular group, and we confirm the recent observation that the S-transform of the Schur index in Lagrangian theories exhibits logarithmic behavior. Finally, we comment on how locally our background reproduces the Ω-background.

Muon g -2 from millicharged hidden confining sector

We provide a novel explanation to the muon g - 2 excess with new physics contributions at the two-loop level. In this scenario, light millicharged particles are introduced to modify the photon vacuum polarization that contributes to muon g - 2 at one additional loop. The muon g - 2 excess can be explained with the millicharged particle mass m χ around 10 MeV and the product of the multiplicity factor and millicharge squared of N χ ε 2 ~ 10 -3 . The minimal model faces severe constraints from direct searches at fixed-target experiments and astrophysical observables. However, if the millicharged particles are also charged under a hidden confining gauge group SU(N χ ) with a confinement scale of MeV, hidden-sector hadrons are unstable and can decay into neutrinos, which makes this scenario consistent with existing constraints. This explanation can be well tested at low-energy lepton colliders such as BESIII and Belle II as well as other proposed fixed-target experiments.

Topological field theory with Haagerup symmetry

Here, we construct a (1 + 1)d topological field theory (TFT) whose topological defect lines (TDLs) realize the transparent Haagerup $\mathscr{H}$ 3 fusion category. This TFT has six vacua, and each of the three non-invertible simple TDLs hosts three defect operators, giving rise to a total of 15 point-like operators. The TFT data, including the three-point coefficients and lasso diagrams, are determined by solving all the sphere four-point crossing equations and torus one-point modular invariance equations. We further verify that the Cardy states furnish a non-negative integer matrix representation under TDL fusion. While many of the constraints we derive are not limited to this particular TFT with six vacua, we leave open the construction of TFTs with two or four vacua. Finally, TFTs realizing the Haagerup $\mathscr{H}$ 1 and $\mathscr{H}$ 2 fusion categories can be obtained by gauging algebra objects. This article makes a modest offering in our pursuit of exotica and the quest for their eventual conformity.

Brane-jet instabilities

With one exception, all known non-supersymmetric AdS 4 and AdS 5 vacua of gauged maximal supergravities that descend from string and M theory have been shown to have modes with mass below the BF bound. The remaining non-supersymmetric AdS solution is perturbatively stable within gauged maximal supergravity, and hence appears to contradict recent conjectures about the AdS stability based on the weak gravity conjecture. We show that this solution is actually unstable by exhibiting a new decay channel, which is only visible when the solution is uplifted to eleven dimensions. In particular, M2 brane probes at generic locations inside the internal manifold are attracted to the Poincaré horizon, only to be expelled as “brane jets” along certain directions of the internal manifold. Such instabilities can arise in any non-supersymmetric AdS vacuum in any dimension. When a brane-jet instability is present, the force that expels the branes is the same as the force felt by a probe brane whose mass is less than its charge.

Developing a Composite Vacuum Insulated Panel (VIP) Insulation/Vinyl Siding Composite Technology for Retrofitting Residential Walls

This paper reports on a project that has attempted to seize on an opportunity to take a giant leap forward in commercializing a technology that would address a key opportunity to achieve energy savings in the existing residential housing stock. It is typically very difficult to increase the R-value of the walls in existing residential housing as doing so from the inside is disruptive and there have not been good solutions to increase thermal envelope performance from the exterior through adding continuous insulation due to the additional work required to fit existing architectural features to the new wall thickness and to reclad the façade. A high thermal resistivity or R-value per inch product that can be used in these applications offers an excellent solution. This paper summarizes a three-year research project to a produce vacuum insulated panel (VIP)/vinyl siding that would have sufficient R-value to meet the continuous insulation requirements of the 2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC, 2018) in all climate zones and has a much thinner profile that will facilitate its application to existing residential homes without the need for expensive retrimming of the architectural details. The paper will supply information on the development of the technology, its thermal modelling, testing, voice of user sessions to solicit input from architects, designers, manufacturers, contractors, and installers, and a techno-economic analysis to gauge its competitiveness with existing product options.

Natural top-bottom mass hierarchy in composite Higgs models

We consider composite two-Higgs doublet models based on gauge-Yukawa theories with strongly interacting fermions generating the top-bottom mass hierarchy. The model features a single "universal" Higgs-Yukawa coupling, $g$, which is identified with the top quark $g\equiv g_t \sim \mathcal{O}(1)$. The top-bottom mass hierarchy arises by soft breaking of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry by a condensate of strongly interacting fermions. A mass splitting between vector-like masses of the confined techni-fermions controls this top-bottom mass hierarchy. This mechanism can be present in a variety of models based on vacuum misalignment. For concreteness, we demonstrate it in a composite two-Higgs scheme.
