Observation of an Axial-Vector State in the Study of the Decay ψ ( 3686 ) → ϕ η η ′

Using ( 2712.4 ± 14.3 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, a partial wave analysis of the decay ψ ( 3686 ) → ϕ η η ′ is performed with the covariant tensor approach. In addition to the established states h 1 ( 1900 ) and ϕ ( 2170 ) , an axial-vector state with a mass near 2.3 GeV / c 2 is observed for the first time. Its mass and width are measured to be 2316 ± 9 stat ± 3 0 syst MeV / c 2 and 89 ± 1 5 stat ± 2 6 syst MeV , respectively. The product branching fractions of B [ ψ ( 3686 ) → X ( 2300 ) η ′ ] B [ X ( 2300 ) → ϕ η ] and B [ ψ ( 3686 ) → X ( 2300 ) η ] B [ X ( 2300 ) → ϕ η ′ ] are determined to be ( 4.8 ± 1.3 stat ± 0.7 syst ) × 10 − 6 and ( 2.2 ± 0.7 stat ± 0.7 syst ) × 10 − 6 , respectively. The branching fraction B [ ψ ( 3686 ) → ϕ η η ′ ] is measured for the first time to be ( 3.14 ± 0.1 7 stat ± 0.2 4 syst ) × 10 − 5 . The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Search for a Neutral Gauge Boson with Nonuniversal Fermion Couplings in Vector Boson Fusion Processes in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

The first search for a heavy neutral spin-1 gauge boson (𝑍′) with nonuniversal fermion couplings produced via vector boson fusion processes and decaying to tau leptons or 𝑊 bosons is presented. The analysis is performed using LHC data at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV, collected from 2016 to 2018 with the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The data are consistent with the standard model predictions. Upper limits are set on the product of the cross section for production of the 𝑍′ boson and its branching fraction to 𝜏⁢𝜏 or 𝑊⁢𝑊. The presence of a 𝑍′ boson decaying to 𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − (𝑊 + ⁢𝑊 − ) is excluded for masses up to 2.45(1.60) TeV, depending on the 𝑍′ boson coupling to standard model weak bosons, and assuming a 𝑍′→𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − (𝑊 + ⁢𝑊 − ) branching fraction of 50%.

Coherent Spin Pumping Originated from Sub-Terahertz Néel Vector Dynamics in Easy Plane α -Fe 2 O 3 /Pt

We present a thorough study of spin-to-charge current interconversion in bulk and thin films of (0001) 𝛼-Fe2O3/Pt heterostructures by all-optical polarization-controlled microwave excitation at sub-Terahertz frequencies. Our results demonstrate that coherent spin pumping is generated through excitations of both the q-FM and q-AFM modes of antiferromagnetic resonance, provided that the corresponding selection rules are met. Our findings significantly advance current understanding of spin pumping in easy-plane antiferromagnets not only by claiming a substantial contribution from the Néel-vector dynamics of the q-AFM mode but also by experimentally determining the relative strength of the intra- and cross-sublattice components of the spin-mixing conductance, challenging recent reports where the absence of spin pumping from the q-AFM mode in Hematite was interpreted as a complete cancellation between these two components. We also provide an explanation for the previously reported observations and show how the q-AFM spin pumping actually vanishes for thin films, which we speculate being either due to an increased level of inhomogeneities or to insufficient film thickness for the q-AFM mode to fully realize.

Search for light long-lived neutral particles from Higgs boson decays via vector-boson-fusion production from pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is reported for long-lived dark photons with masses between 0.1 GeV and 15 GeV, from exotic decays of Higgs bosons produced via vector-boson-fusion. Events that contain displaced collimated Standard Model fermions reconstructed in the calorimeter or muon spectrometer are probed. This search uses the full LHC Run 2 (2015–2018) data sample collected in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 . Dominant backgrounds from Standard Model processes and non-collision sources are estimated using data-driven techniques. The observed event yields in the signal regions are consistent with the expected background. Upper limits on the Higgs boson to dark photon branching fraction are reported as a function of the dark photon mean proper decay length or of the dark photon mass and the coupling between the Standard Model and the potential dark sector. This search is combined with previous ATLAS searches obtained in the gluon–gluon fusion and WH production modes. A branching fraction above 10% is excluded at 95% CL for a 125 GeV Higgs boson decaying into two dark photons for dark photon mean proper decay lengths between 173 and 1296 mm and mass of 10 GeV.

Combined effective field theory interpretation of Higgs boson, electroweak vector boson, top quark, and multijet measurements

Constraints on Wilson coefficients (WCs) corresponding to dimension-6 operators of the standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) are determined from a simultaneous fit to seven sets of CMS measurements probing Higgs boson, electroweak vector boson, top quark, and multijet production. Measurements of electroweak precision observables are also included and provide complementary constraints to those from the CMS experiment. The CMS measurements, using LHC proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {Te}\text {V} $, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 36.3 or 138$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$, are chosen to provide sensitivity to a broad set of operators, for which consistent SMEFT predictions can be derived. These are primarily measurements of differential cross sections which are parameterized as functions of the WCs. In measurements targeting ${\text {t}} (\bar{\textrm{t}})\text {X} $ production, SMEFT effects are modelled at the detector level. Individual constraints on 64 WCs, and constraints on 43 linear combinations of WCs, are obtained.

A Study of Performance Portability of Low-bit Fused Matrix-Vector Multiplication Kernels in SYCL

Understanding the causes of performance gaps between a portable programming model and a vendor-specific programming model is important for improving performance portability. This paper studies performance portability of low-bit fused general matrix-vector multiplication kernels in SYCL on vendors’ graphics processing units (GPUs). This work introduces the use case, explains the kernel implementations in detail, evaluates the performance of the CUDA, HIP, and SYCL kernels on datacenter, desktop, and laptop GPUs, and investigates the causes of performance gaps. The results show that loop unrolling, kernel dispatch overhead, and sum reduction contribute to the gaps.

Mode-multiplexed photonic integrated vector dot-product core from inverse design

Photonic computing has the potential to harness the full degrees of freedom (DOFs) of the light field, including the wavelength, spatial mode, spatial location, phase quadrature, and polarization, to achieve a higher level of computing parallelism and scalability than digital electronic processors. While multiplexing using the wavelength and other DOFs can be readily integrated on silicon photonics platforms with compact footprints, conventional mode-division multiplexed (MDM) photonic designs occupy areas exceeding tens to hundreds of microns for a few spatial modes, significantly limiting their scalability. Here, we utilize inverse design to demonstrate an ultracompact photonic computing core that calculates vector dot products based on MDM coherent mixing. Our dot-product core integrates the functionalities of two-mode multiplexers and one multimode coherent mixer within a nominal footprint of 5 μm x 3 μm . We have experimentally demonstrated computing examples on the fabricated dot-product core, including complex number multiplication and motion estimation using optical flow. The compact dot-product core design enables large-scale on-chip integration in a parallel photonic computing primitive cluster for high-throughput scientific computing and computer vision tasks.

Constraining Absolute Higgs Couplings using Vector Boson Fusion H to WW with FCC-hh

The absolute normalisation scale of Higgs couplings is difficult to determine in hadron colliders. An experimentally and theoretically clean way to establish the coupling scale is to measure the ratio of resonant Vector Boson Fusion $H \rightarrow WW^{*}$ production to non-resonant $qq \rightarrow qqWW$ because both the theoretical and detector response systematics all cancel to first order in the ratio. To set the scale of the sensitivity, a simple selection and fit is presented with gives a 1.8\% (1.9\%) statistical uncertainty on the ratio for a 100 (84) TeV FCC-hh at 30\,ab$^{-1}$, which would give a corresponding uncertainty on the $\kappa$ scale of 0.5-1\% depending on systematic effects and potential impacts of more sophisticated analysis.

Higgs production via vector-boson fusion at the LHC

In this article, we summarise the recent experimental measurements and theoretical work on Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion at the LHC. Along with this, we provide state-of-the-art predictions at fixed order as well as with parton-shower corrections within the Standard Model at 13.6 TeV. The results are presented in the form of multi-differential distributions as well as in the Simplified Template Cross Section bins. All materials and outputs of this study are available on public repositories. Finally, following findings in the literature, recommendations are made to estimate theoretical uncertainties related to parton-shower corrections.

Vector Meson Spectrum from Top-Down Holographic QCD

We elaborate on the brane configuration that gives rise to a QCD-like gauge theory that confines at low energies and becomes scale invariant at the highest energies. In the limit where the rank of the gauge group is large, a gravitational description emerges. For the confined phase, we obtain a vector meson spectrum and demonstrate how a certain choice of parameters can lead to quantitative agreement with empirical data.

Forward dijet and vector meson production at the LHC

We first describe the predictions concerning jet production in the very forward region, especially in the FOCAL kinematic region of the ALICE collaboration at CERN as a test of saturation. We also compare vector meson production cross sections at the LHC in Pb Pb and p Pb collisions with the Balitsky Fadin Kuraev Lipatov and the Balitsky Kovchegov evolution equations and data favor the observation of saturation at the LHC.

Towards retrieving cloud top entrainment velocities from MISR cloud motion vectors

Although important, direct retrievals of entrainment rates in cloud-topped planetary boundary layer (PBL) remain elusive. Here we present a novel technique for retrieving cloud-top entrainment velocities using only Multi-angle Imaging Spectro-Radiometer (MISR) stereoscopic retrievals of cloud-motion vectors (CMVs) and cloud-top heights (CTHs). Mesoscale vertical air velocity at CTH is diagnosed from the continuity equation and then used to derive entrainment velocities from the PBL mass-budget equation. The algorithm is demonstrated through a case of marine stratocumulus deck off the California coast, with comparisons made against data from the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis (ERA5) and the data from other satellites. MISR low-cloud CTH for this case were lower than the ERA5 reported PBL depth by 189 ± 87 m. These differences in cloud top heights partly modulate the differences in the ERA5 and MISR horizontal winds, with larger differences in meridional over zonal wind components. Average difference between ERA5 and MISR derived mesoscale vertical air motion at cloud top was 0.14 ± 0.73 cm s −1 , while the same for entrainment rate was −0.09 ± 0.46 cm s −1 . The uncertainties in the utilized CTHs and CMVs are propagated to derive systematic and random retrieval uncertainties. Fractional uncertainty is lower than 25 % when the retrieved mesoscale vertical air motion is stronger than ±0.04 cm s −1 and entrainment velocities are stronger than ±0.03 cm s −1 . These results showcase the ability to derive mesoscale vertical air motion and entrainment rates from MISR observations and motivate its extension to generate a global climatology leveraging its full 23-year record (2000–2022). Nonetheless comprehensive validation of the retrievals is warranted through comparisons with estimates from an independent dataset across diverse weather conditions.

Neutrino-Antineutrino Conversion from Ultralight Vector Dark Matter

We show that Majorana neutrinos convert into antineutrinos in a background of ultralight vector dark matter coupled to lepton number, such as the gauge boson of $\text{U}(1)_{B-L}$ or $\text{U}(1)_{L_i - L_j}$ with $i, j = e , μ, τ$. This effect is suppressed by the small neutrino mass, but the enhancement by long astrophysical baselines can enable future searches for solar and supernova neutrinos to explore uncharted parameter space. For instance, for $\text{U}(1)_{B-L}$ dark matter, the observation of a supernova neutrino burst at DUNE, Hyper-Kamiokande, and JUNO could probe gauge couplings as small as $e^\prime \sim 10^{-32} - 10^{-25}$ for dark matter masses of $m_{A^\prime} \sim 10^{-22} \ \text{eV} - 10^{-14} \ \text{eV}$, beyond the capability of other future probes.

Heavy long-lived dark vector via a gluonic portal

We study a dark gauge boson Z′ that exclusively couples to the QCD gluons through higher dimensional operators. These operators are generated from integrating out of heavy ultraviolet resonances carrying both QCD and dark gauge charges. With SU(3)C gauge invariance, charge and parity symmetries preserved, we find that the leading effective operators are restricted to have the form of Z′GGG and Z′Z′GG at dimension-eight, which can naturally render the Z′ particle long-lived, and serve as a viable dark matter candidate. We investigate the phenomenology of these operators with both collider experiments and cosmological observation, without and with the assumption that this dark gauge boson plays the role of the dominant dark matter component. For an unstable Z′, we show that depending on its lifetime, it can be probed by various observables up to ultraviolet physics scale around 10 9 GeV. For Z′ being dark matter, we find that $m_{Z'}$ ≳ 1 TeV is consistent with the thermal freeze-out scenario. In contrast, in the freeze-in scenario, the extremely small couplings leave the relevant parameter space largely unconstrained by current experiments.

First measurement of D* + vector meson spin alignment in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\text{NN}}}={5}.0{2}$ TeV

The first measurement of prompt D *+ -meson spin alignment in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions with respect to the direction orthogonal to the reaction plane is presented. The spin alignment is quantified by measuring the element ρ 00 of the diagonal spin-density matrix for prompt D *+ mesons with 4 < p T < 30 GeV/c in two rapidity intervals, |y| < 0.3 and 0.3 < |y| < 0.8, in central (0–10%) and midcentral (30–50%) Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\text{NN}}}={5}.0{2}$ TeV. Evidence of spin alignment ρ 00 > 1/3 has been found for p T > 15 GeV/c and 0.3 < |y| < 0.8 with a significance of 3.1σ. The measured spin alignment of prompt D *+ mesons is compared with the one of inclusive J/ψ mesons measured at forward rapidity (2.5 < y < 4).

Measurement of vector boson production cross sections and their ratios using pp collisions at s = 13.6 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Fiducial and total W± and Z boson cross sections, their ratios and the ratio of top-antitop-quark pair and W-boson fiducial cross sections are measured in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13.6 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 29 fb−1 of data collected in 2022 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The measured fiducial cross-section values for W+→ℓ+ν, W−→ℓ−ν¯, and Z→ℓ+ℓ− (ℓ=e or μ) boson productions are 4250±150 pb, 3310±120 pb, and 744±20 pb, respectively, where the uncertainty is the total uncertainty, including that arising from the luminosity of about 2.2%. The measurements are in agreement with Standard-Model predictions calculated at next-to-next-to-leading-order in αs, next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and next-to-leading-order electroweak accuracy.
