Relic cosmological vector fields and inflationary gravitational waves

Here we show that relic vector fields can significantly impact a spectrum of primordial gravitational waves in the postinflationary era. We consider a triplet of U(1) fields in a homogeneous, isotropic configuration. The interaction between the gravitational waves and the vector fields, from the end of reheating to the present day, yields novel spectral features. The amplitude, tilt, shape, and net chirality of the gravitational wave spectrum are shown to depend on the abundance of the electric- and magneticlike vector fields. Our results show that even a modest abundance can have strong implications for efforts to detect the imprint of gravitational waves on the cosmic microwave background polarization. We find that a vector field comprising less than 2% of the energy density during the radiation-dominated era can have a greater than order unity effect on the predicted inflationary gravitational wave spectrum.

Polarization near dislocation cores in SrTiO 3 single crystals: The role of flexoelectricity

Spontaneous polarization as large as ~28 μC/cm 2 was recently observed around the dislocation cores in non-polar SrTiO 3 bulk crystals, and its origin was attributed to the flexoelectric effect, i.e., polarization induced by strain gradients. However, the roles of flexoelectricity, relative to other electromechanical contributions, and the nature of dislocations, i.e., edge vs screw dislocations in the induced polarization, are not well understood. In this work, we study the role of flexoelectricity in inducing polarization around three types of dislocation cores in SrTiO 3 : b= a(100) edge dislocation, b= a(110) edge dislocation, and b= a(010) screw dislocation, where b is the Burgers vector. For the edge dislocations, polarization can be induced by electrostriction alone, while flexoelectricity is essential for stabilizing the symmetric polarization pattern. The shear component of the flexoelectric tensor has a dominant effect on the magnitude and spatial distribution of the flexoelectric polarization. In contrast, no polarization is induced around the b= a(010) screw dislocation through either electrostriction or flexoelectricity. Finally, our findings provide an in-depth understanding of the role of flexoelectricity in inducing polarization around dislocation cores and offer insights into the defect engineering of dielectric/ferroelectric materials.

Grating Polarizers at 170 GHz for ECRH Systems: Low Power Tests and Simulations

The elliptical polarization produced by a pair of sinusoidally profiled miter-bend grating polarizers has been measured experimentally and found to be in excellent agreement with theory. The polarizers were designed to be used at 170 GHz in the miter bends of a 63.5 mm corrugated metallic waveguide for creating the arbitrary elliptically polarized microwave beam needed for electron cyclotron resonance heating of plasma. Using a vector network analyzer to generate a linearly polarized HE11 incident mode, each polarizer was individually tested to measure the rotation α and ellipticity β of the elliptically polarized reflected microwave beam as a function of the grating rotation angle. The grating polarizers were then tested together to measure the elliptical polarization as a function of the angles of the combination of the two polarizers arranged sequentially on the transmission line. The map of the ellipticity versus grating angles agreed very well with numerical simulations using high-frequency structure simulator. Numerical simulations show that up to eight combinations of rotation angles of the two grating polarizers can provide the same ellipticity but with the varying ohmic loss, thus allowing the choice of settings to minimize the ohmic loss, a necessary consideration to minimize heating effects in megawatt power level systems.

A Lattice Boltzmann Scheme for Polarized Radiative Transfer in Planetary Atmospheres

Quantitative calculation of reflected polarized light from planets is of great significance to interpret the polarimetric observations of planetary atmospheres. In this work, we propose a lattice Boltzmann (LB) scheme for polarized radiative transfer in planetary atmospheres. The LB scheme obtains the Stokes vector through the vector LB equation performing simple collision and streaming processes. The vector radiative transfer equation is rigorously derived from the vector LB equation via the Maxwell iteration technique. Polarized radiative transfer of a single point on the planetary surface with Rayleigh and Mie scattering atmospheres are first accurately solved by our LB scheme. Afterward, we systematically investigate the disk-integrated polarization of finite and semi-infinite, conservative and nonconservative Rayleigh scattering planetary atmospheres. The disk-integrated phase curves of the Stokes parameters and degree of polarization and spherical and geometric albedos are produced, which are in good agreement with the benchmark results for different cases. The numerical results indicate that our LB scheme is efficient and accurate for polarized radiative transfer in planetary atmospheres. Our LB scheme is expected to provide a competitive numerical tool to interpret the polarimetric observations of planetary atmospheres.

A Polarization Tensor for Neutron Optics

A rank 2 dimension 3 tensor formulation for polarized neutron transport in a magnetic field is derived. Using this formulation, the rotating magnetic field problem is revisited to produce a single 3 × 3 vector-transformation matrix that describes the polarization transport. That result is then used to fashion a new strategy for a numerical approximation of polarization transport in an arbitrary magnetic field using time-dependent perturbation theory.

PAH101: A GW+BSE Dataset of 101 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) Molecular Crystals

Abstract The excited-state properties of molecular crystals are important for applications in organic electronic devices. TheGWapproximation and Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW+BSE) is the state-of-the-art method for calculating the excited-state properties of crystalline solids with periodic boundary conditions. We present the PAH101 dataset ofGW+BSE calculations for 101 molecular crystals of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with up to ~500 atoms in the unit cell. To the best of our knowledge, this is the firstGW+BSE dataset for molecular crystals. The data records include theGWquasiparticle band structure, the fundamental band gap, the static dielectric constant, the first singlet exciton energy (optical gap), the first triplet exciton energy, the dielectric function, and optical absorption spectra for light polarized along the three lattice vectors. The dataset can be used to (i) discover materials with desired electronic/optical properties, (ii) identify correlations between DFT andGW+BSE quantities, and (iii) train machine learned models to help in materials discovery efforts.

Birefringence tomography for axion cloud

An axion cloud surrounding a supermassive black hole can be naturally produced through the superradiance process. Its existence can be examined by the axion induced birefringence effect. It predicts an oscillation of the electric vector position angle of linearly polarized radiations. Stringent constraints of the existence of the axion in a particular mass window has been obtained based on the recent Event Horizon Telescope measurement on M87$^\star$. The future Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations will be able to measure the vicinity of many supermassive black holes, thus it opens the possibility to search for the existence of axions in a wide mass regime. In this paper, we study how different black hole properties and accretion flows influence the signatures of the axion induced birefringence. We include the impacts of black hole inclination angles, spins, magnetic fields, plasma velocity distributions, the thickness of the accretion flows. We pay special attention to characterize the washout effects induced by the finite thickness of the accretion flows and the lensed photons. Finally, based on this study, we give prospects on how to optimize the axion search using future VLBI observations, such as the next-generation Event Horizon Telescope, to further increase the sensitivity.

Measurements of the Branching Fraction, Polarization, and C P Asymmetry for the Decay B 0 → ω ω

We present a comprehensive study of B 0 → ω ω decays using 772 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e − collider. This process is a suppressed charmless decay into two vector mesons and can exhibit interesting polarization and C P violation. The decay is observed for the first time with a significance of 7.9 standard deviations. We measure a branching fraction B = ( 1.53 ± 0.29 ± 0.17 ) × 10 − 6 , a fraction of longitudinal polarization f L = 0.87 ± 0.13 ± 0.13 , and a time-integrated C P asymmetry A C P = − 0.44 ± 0.43 ± 0.11 , where the first uncertainties listed are statistical and the second are systematic. This is the first observation of B 0 → ω ω and the first measurements of f L and A C P for this decay. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Spin alignment of vector mesons by glasma fields

We explain how spin alignment of vector mesons can be induced by background fields, such as electromagnetic fields or soft gluon fields. Our study is based on the quantum kinetic theory of spinning quarks and antiquarks and incorporates the relaxation of the dynamically generated spin polarization. The spin density matrix of vector mesons is obtained by quark coalescence via the Wigner function and kinetic equation. Our approach predicts a local spin correlation that is distinct from the nonlocal expressions previously obtained in phenomenological derivations. We estimate the magnitude of such local correlations in the glasma model of the preequilibrium phase of relativistic heavy ion collisions. It is found that the resulting spin alignment could be greatly enhanced and may be comparable to the experimental measurement in order of magnitude. We further propose new phenomenological scenarios to qualitatively explain the transverse-momentum and centrality dependence of spin alignment in a self-consistent framework.

Higher-order kinematical effects in deeply virtual Compton scattering

We study the deeply virtual Compton scattering cross-section in twist-two generalized parton distribution (GPD) approximation, and show that different choices of light-cone vectors and gauges for the final photon polarization will lead to different higher-order kinematical corrections to the cross-section formula. The choice of light-cone vectors affects kinematic corrections at the twist-three level, accounting for the differences between the cross-section formulas in the literature. On the other hand, kinematical corrections from higher-twist GPDs should eliminate the light-cone dependence at twist three. Those light-cone dependencies are studied systematically at JLab 12 GeV and future EIC kinematics. They serve as the intrinsic systematic uncertainties in extracting the Compton form factors through the cross-section formula. More importantly, they are also necessary for understanding cross-section measurements with higher-twist precision and to reconstruct higher-order Compton form factors.

Real-time biomass feedstock particle quality detection using image analysis and machine vision

Abstract A common and costly challenge in the nascent biorefinery industry is the consistent handling and conveyance of biomass feedstock materials, which can vary widely in their chemical, physical, and mechanical properties. Solutions to cope with varying feedstock qualities will be required, including advanced process controls to adjust equipment and reject feedstocks that do not meet a quality standard. In this work, we present and evaluate methods to autonomously assess corn stover feedstock quality in real time and provide data to process controls with low-cost camera hardware. We explore the use of neural networks to classify feedstocks based on actual processing behavior and pixel matrix feature parameterization to further assess particle attributes that may explain the variable processing behavior. We used the pretrained ResNet neural network coupled with a gated recurrent unit (GRU) time-series classifier trained on our image data, resulting in binary classification of feedstock anomalies with favorable performance. The textural aspects of the image data were statistically analyzed to determine if the textural features were predictive of operational disruptions. The significant textural features were angular second moment, prominence, mean height of surface profile, mean resultant vector, shade, skewness, variation of the polar facet orientation, and direction of azimuthal facets. Expansion of these models is recommended across a wider variety of labeled feedstock images of different qualities and species to develop a more robust tool that may be deployed using low-cost cameras within biorefineries.

Radial Spin Texture of the Weyl Fermions in Chiral Tellurium

Trigonal tellurium, a small-gap semiconductor with pronounced magneto-electric and magneto-optical responses, is among the simplest realizations of a chiral crystal. We have studied by spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy its unconventional electronic structure and unique spin texture. We identify Kramers-Weyl, composite, and accordionlike Weyl fermions, so far only predicted by theory, and show that the spin polarization is parallel to the wave vector along the lines in k space connecting high-symmetry points. Our results clarify the symmetries that enforce such spin texture in a chiral crystal, thus bringing new insight in the formation of a spin vectorial field more complex than the previously proposed hedgehog configuration. Our findings thus pave the way to a classification scheme for these exotic spin textures and their search in chiral crystals.

Intertwined charge and spin density waves in a topological kagome material

Using neutrons and x rays we show the topological kagome antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn for T < 285 K forms a homogeneous spin and charge ordered state comprising a longitudinally polarized spin density wave with wave vector k β = k β c ̂ , a helical modulated version of the room temperature antichiral magnetic order with k χ = k χ c ̂ , and charge density waves with wave vectors 2 k β , 2 k χ , and k β + k χ . Though k χ and k β coincide for 200 K < T < 230 K , they exhibit distinct continuous T dependencies before locking to commensurate values of k β = 1 12 c * and k χ = 5 48 c * at low T . Density functional theory indicates this complex modulated state may be associated with the nesting of Fermi surfaces from correlated flat kagome bands, which host Weyl nodes that are annihilated as it forms. Topology-imprinting in nonlinear metasurfaces

Flat optical components, or metasurfaces, have transformed optical imaging, data storage, information processing, and biomedical applications by providing unprecedented control over light-matter interactions. These nano-engineered structures enable compact, multidimensional manipulation of light’s amplitude, phase, polarization, and wavefront, producing scalar and vector beams with unique properties such as orbital angular momentum and knotted topologies. This flexibility has potential applications in optical communication and imaging, particularly in complex environments such as atmospheric turbulence and undersea scattering. However, designing metasurfaces for shorter wavelengths, such as visible and ultraviolet light, remains challenging due to fabrication limitations and material absorption. Here, we introduce an innovative concept called topology imprinting using judiciously designed all-dielectric nonlinear optical metasurfaces to replicate desired waveforms at fundamental and harmonic frequencies, opening promising avenues for advanced photonic applications.

Improper ferroelectricity in 134-type $AA_3'B_4\text{O}_{12}$ perovskites

The 134-type $\textit{A}$-site ordered LaMn 3 Cr 4 O 12 , that belongs to the family of $AA_3'B_4\text{O}_{12}$ perovskites, with cubic structure and magnetically driven improper polarization is puzzling because the conventional mechanisms leading to the creation of polarization in type-II multiferroics do not apply. By symmetry analysis and first-principles simulations in this work, we discover an original and previously overlooked energetic term that naturally explains the origin of improper polarization in LaMn 3 Cr 4 O 12 . In addition, we demonstrate the existence of three other energetic invariants in $AA_3'B_4\text{O}_{12}$ perovskites, for which other physical quantities (such as oxygen tiltings or shear strain) mediate the interaction between $\textit{G}$-type antiferromagnetic vectors to create and even enhance improper polarization.

Complete Stokes vector analysis with a compact, portable rotating waveplate polarimeter

Accurate calibration of polarization dependent optical elements is often necessary in optical experiments. A versatile polarimeter device to measure the polarization state of light is a valuable tool in these experiments. Here we report a rotating waveplate-based polarimeter capable of complete Stokes vector analysis of collimated light. Calibration of the device allows accurate measurements over a range of wavelengths, with a bandwidth of >30 nm in this implementation. A photo-interrupter trigger system supplies the phase information necessary for full determination of the Stokes vector. An Arduino microcontroller performs rapid analysis and displays the results on a liquid crystal display. The polarimeter is compact and can be placed anywhere on an optical table on a single standard post. The components to construct the device are only a fraction of the cost of commercially available devices while the accuracy and precision of the measurements are of the same order of magnitude.

Measurement of the J / ψ Polarization with Respect to the Event Plane in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC

We study the polarization of inclusive J/ψ produced in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV at the LHC in the dimuon channel, via the measurement of the angular distribution of its decay products. We perform the study in the rapidity region 2.5 < y < 4, for three transverse momentum intervals (2 < p T < 4, 4 < p T < 6, 6 < p T < 10 GeV/c) and as a function of the centrality of the collision for 2 < p T < 6 GeV/c. For the first time, the polarization is measured with respect to the event plane of the collision, by considering the angle between the positive-charge decay muon in the J/ψ rest frame and the axis perpendicular to the event-plane vector in the laboratory system. A small transverse polarization is measured, with a significance reaching 3.9σ at low p T and for intermediate centrality values. The polarization could be connected with the behavior of the quark-gluon plasma, formed in Pb-Pb collisions, as a rotating fluid with large vorticity, as well as with the existence of a strong magnetic field in the early stage of its formation.

Preliminary searches for spin-dependent interactions using sidebands of nuclear spin-precession signals

Various theories beyond the Standard Model predict new particles with masses in the sub-eV range with very weak couplings to ordinary matter. A new P-odd and T-odd interaction between polarized and unpolarized nucleons proportional to s⃗⋅r̂ is one such possibility, where r⃗=rr̂ is the spatial vector connecting the nucleons, and s⃗ is the spin of the polarized nucleon. Such an interaction involving a scalar coupling gsN at one vertex and a pseudoscalar coupling gpn at the polarized nucleon vertex can be induced by the exchange of spin-0 pseudoscalar bosons. We describe a new technique to search for interactions of this form and present the first measurements of this type. We show that future improvements to this technique can improve the laboratory upper bound on the product gsNgpn by two orders of magnitude for interaction ranges at the 100 micron scale.
