Sliding wear of self-mated Al2O3-SiC whisker-reinforced composites at 23-1200 C

Microstructural changes occurring during sliding wear of self-mated Al2O3 SiC whisker-reinforced composites were studied using optical, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Pin-on-disc specimens were slid in air at 2.7 m/s sliding velocity under a 26.5 N load for 1 h. Wear tests were conducted at 23, 600, 800 and 1200 C. Mild wear with a wear factor of 2.4 x 10 exp -7 - 1.5 x 10 exp -6 cu mm /N per m was experienced at all test temperatures. The composite showed evidence of wear by fatigue mechanisms at 800 C and below. Tribochemical reaction (SiC oxidation and reaction of SiO2 and Al2O3) leads to intergranular failure at 1200 C. Distinct microstructural differences existing at each test temperature are reported.

Pest resistant MoSi2-based materials containing in-situ grown .beta.-Si3N4 whiskers

A MoSi.sub.2 pest resistant material includes in-situ grown .beta.-Si.sub.3 N.sub.4 whiskers. In addition to excellent pest resistance, the material provides a lower coefficient of thermal expansion for better match with continuous reinforcing fibers such as SiC fibers. A two stage heating and pressing production technique enables lower temperature processing with substantially full densification.

Electrolytic Sharpening of Diode-Contact Whiskers

Phosphor bronze wire pointed without highly-toxic chemical reagents. Phosphor bronze wire to be pointed affixed to metal post held by fixture, such as pin vise. Fixture moved axially by micrometer allows precise control of position of end of wire with respect to surface of pointing solution. Solution consists of 4 weight percent sulfamic acid crystals in deionized water. Dissolution current adjusted via the autotransformer setting.

Analysis of whisker-toughened CMC structural components using an interactive reliability model

Realizing wider utilization of ceramic matrix composites (CMC) requires the development of advanced structural analysis technologies. This article focuses on the use of interactive reliability models to predict component probability of failure. The deterministic William-Warnke failure criterion serves as theoretical basis for the reliability model presented here. The model has been implemented into a test-bed software program. This computer program has been coupled to a general-purpose finite element program. A simple structural problem is presented to illustrate the reliability model and the computer algorithm.

Interactive Reliability Model for Whisker-toughened Ceramics

Wider use of ceramic matrix composites (CMC) will require the development of advanced structural analysis technologies. The use of an interactive model to predict the time-independent reliability of a component subjected to multiaxial loads is discussed. The deterministic, three-parameter Willam-Warnke failure criterion serves as the theoretical basis for the reliability model. The strength parameters defining the model are assumed to be random variables, thereby transforming the deterministic failure criterion into a probabilistic criterion. The ability of the model to account for multiaxial stress states with the same unified theory is an improvement over existing models. The new model was coupled with a public-domain finite element program through an integrated design program. This allows a design engineer to predict the probability of failure of a component. A simple structural problem is analyzed using the new model, and the results are compared to existing models.

Tin Whisker Risk Assessment of TDRSS IV Transponder Units 101 and 102

This report documents the plating requirements for the electrical and mechanical parts used in the TDRSS IV transponder manufactured by MOTOROLA, INC., SSG, SSSD. The intent of this report is to identify any electrical, electromechanical or mechanical part that does not have adequate requirements to prevent the use of a pure tin finish.
