Study of 1980 Comet Encke-asteroid missions using a spin-stabilized spacecraft. Volume 2: Technical Report

The data and analyses that support the conclusions and recommendations of a space mission to intercept comets and asteroids are presented. The scientific basis for the Encke missions is discussed and includes a summary of the physical characteristics of Encke, a statement of scientific objectives and priorities, a definition of the spacecraft payload, and a rationale for utilization and instrumentation of coma probes. Data are included for the reference mission selected as the baseline for science analysis and design studies. Alternate spacecraft configurations are compared in terms of their capability in meeting the science and mission requirements.

Earth Observatory Satellite system definition study. Report no. 3: Design/cost tradeoff studies. Appendix D: EOS configuration design data. Part 1: Spacecraft configuration

The results of structural studies of the Earth Observatory Satellite (EOS) which define the member sizes to meet the vehicle design requirements are presented. The most significant requirements in sizing the members are the stiffness required to meet the launch vehicle design frequencies both in the late al and in the longitudinal directions. The selected configurations, both baseline and preferred, for the Delta and Titan launch vehicles were evaluated for stiffness requirements. The structural idealization used to estimate the stiffness of each structural arrangement, was based on an evaluation of primary loads paths, effectivity of structural members, and estimated sizes for the preferred configurations. The study included an evaluation of the following structural materials: (1) aluminum alloys, (2) titanium alloys, (3) beryllium, (4) beryllium/aluminum alloy, and (5) composite materials.

Analysis of pogo on the space shuttle: Accumulator design guidelines and planar multiengine model development

The design guidelines were generated to support the selection of the baseline accumulator configuration for the space shuttle. They were based upon the elimination of the instabilities that had been predicted for the shuttle system (in the absence of accumulators) using the single-engine model. The multiengine pitch plane stability model was subsequently developed to enable a more refined analysis of the pogo problem. The results obtained with this refined model, in the absence of accumulators, indicated a generally stable system. However, it was found that reasonable adjustment of the axial motion of the feedline aft support on the external tank could induce instability of the system. This instability was eliminated by the addition of high-pressure oxidizer turbopump inlet accumulators to the system. The results obtained with the refined model did not suggest a need to alter the design guidelines that had been obtained previously. The analyses with the multiengine model also treated the question of the use of a phase margin in the system stability requirements.

AAFE large deployable antenna development program: Executive summary

The large deployable antenna development program sponsored by the Advanced Applications Flight Experiments of the Langley Research Center is summarized. Projected user requirements for large diameter deployable reflector antennas were reviewed. Trade-off studies for the selection of a design concept for 10-meter diameter reflectors were made. A hoop/column concept was selected as the baseline concept. Parametric data are presented for 15-meter, 30-meter, and 100-meter diameters. A 1.82-meter diameter engineering model which demonstrated the feasiblity of the concept is described.

Auxiliary Payload Power System thermal control

The Auxiliary Payload Power System (APPS) provides supplementary power and cooling to Space Processing Application (SPA) experiments to be mounted in the APPS and the Spacelab in the Shuttle Payload Bay. SPA experiment operations are planned for early Shuttle flights. This paper presents thermal control study results for preliminary analysis and design definition of the APPS. A 100/sq m, three-wing, pumped-fluid, deployable radiator with separate APPS equipment and SPA experiments coolant loops was selected as the baseline. The system is capable of rejecting the heat (approximately 26 kw) associated with the production and consumption of approximately 16 kw of electrical power produced by the APPS fuel cells for a worst case radiator orientation. For the most favorable orientation, the heat rejection and power capability approach 38 and 24 kw, respectively. Alternate approaches were evaluated, such as heat pipes for the radiator and alternate fluids for the coolant loops. Emphasis was placed on using Shuttle developed hardware: coolant pumps, heat exchangers, fluids, and radiator technology.

Payload transportation system study

A standard size set of shuttle payload transportation equipment was defined that will substantially reduce the cost of payload transportation and accommodate a wide range of payloads with minimum impact on payload design. The system was designed to accommodate payload shipments between the level 4 payload integration sites and the launch site during the calendar years 1979-1982. In addition to defining transportation multi-use mission support equipment (T-MMSE) the mode of travel, prime movers, and ancillary equipment required in the transportation process were also considered. Consistent with the STS goals of low cost and the use of standardized interfaces, the transportation system was designed to commercial grade standards and uses the payload flight mounting interfaces for transportation. The technical, cost, and programmatic data required to permit selection of a baseline system of MMSE for intersite movement of shuttle payloads were developed.

Design consideration for a nuclear electric propulsion system

A study is currently underway to design a nuclear electric propulsion vehicle capable of performing detailed exploration of the outer-planets. Primary emphasis is on the power subsystem. Secondary emphasis includes integration into a spacecraft, and integration with the thrust subsystem and science package or payload. The results of several design iterations indicate an all-heat-pipe system offers greater reliability, elimination of many technology development areas and a specific weight of under 20 kg/kWe at the 400 kWe power level. The system is compatible with a single Shuttle launch and provides greater safety than could be obtained with designs using pumped liquid metal cooling. Two configurations, one with the reactor and power conversion forward on the spacecraft with the ion engines aft and the other with reactor, power conversion and ion engines aft were selected as dual baseline designs based on minimum weight, minimum required technology development and maximum growth potential and flexibility.

A real time Pegasus propulsion system model for VSTOL piloted simulation evaluation

A real time propulsion system modeling technique suitable for use in man-in-the-loop simulator studies was developd. This technique provides the system accuracy, stability, and transient response required for integrated aircraft and propulsion control system studies. A Pegasus-Harrier propulsion system was selected as a baseline for developing mathematical modeling and simulation techniques for VSTOL. Initially, static and dynamic propulsion system characteristics were modeled in detail to form a nonlinear aerothermodynamic digital computer simulation of a Pegasus engine. From this high fidelity simulation, a real time propulsion model was formulated by applying a piece-wise linear state variable methodology. A hydromechanical and water injection control system was also simulated. The real time dynamic model includes the detail and flexibility required for the evaluation of critical control parameters and propulsion component limits over a limited flight envelope. The model was programmed for interfacing with a Harrier aircraft simulation. Typical propulsion system simulation results are presented.

Booster and orbiter configurations

In the recent Future Space Transportation System (FSFS) study, a mission model was selected and a baseline vehicle which best met model requirements was shaped. This baseline was then analyzed for flight performance, structural and subsystem weight, and operation. Figures related to a payload of 150,000 lb in a 20-ft-diam by 90-ft-long envelope became the baseline. The existence of both space-based orbital transfer vehicles (OTVs) and a space station was assumed, taking into account a transfer of the payload from the launch vehicle to OTVs at the space station for final delivery to geosynchronous orbit (GEO). A computer-aided engineering system called Aerospace Vehicle Interactive Design (AVID) was employed in connection with baseline vehicle development. It was found that approximately three-fifth of the payload weight would be cryogenic propellants for OTVs. Attention is given to problems regarding the packaging of cryogenic tankage, a payload shroud, and studies of staging for two different booster propulsion units.

Effect of space environment on space-based radar phased-array antenna (A0133)

Kapton polyimide film was selected as the baseline material for the Grumman spce based radar (SBR) concept. To gain the requisite confidence for long-term service durability, it is desirable to subject material specimens as well as a portion of the SBR antenna directly to the combined space environment and compare property degradation to that caused by laboratory simulation. The overall objective of this program is to evauate the effect of the space environment on polymeric materials currently being considered for the Grumman SBR Phased-Array Antenna. Degradation mechanisms caused by thermal cycling, ultraviolet and charged-particle irradiation, applied load, and high-voltage plasma interaction will be evaluated. The experiment occupies a 6-in.-deep end corner tray located on the space end of the Long Duration Exposure Facility and consists of both passive and active parts. The passive part addresses the effect of environment and stress on the dimensional stability spliced and continuous Kapton, both plain and reinforced. The active part will study the interaction of high voltage and low-Earth-orbit plasma.

Simultaneous measurements of carbon monoxide and ozone in the NASA Global Atmospheric Sampling Program (GASP)

It is noted that the Global Atmospheric Sampling Program (GASP) was intended to establish global baseline values of selected atmospheric constituents that could be used for studies of the dynamics of the sampled region as well as for modeling purposes. Instrument packages were carried on four Boeing 747 aircraft in routine commercial service. Carbon monoxide and ozone data were collected simultaneously from early 1977 to early 1979 when GASP terminated. CO was measured with an infrared absorption analyzer using dual isotope fluorescence. Ozone was measured via absorption of UV light. Correlations between the CO and the O3 are tabulated; they are clearly negative for both troposphere and stratosphere in middle latitudes, indicating that transport processes between the stratosphere and troposphere (discussed) dominate. But in the low latitude troposphere the correlations are positive, indicating the possible influence of photochemical effects.

Data communications and monitor for the Penn State University profiler network

The profiler network installed by the Department of Meteorology at Penn State University utilizes a microcomputer for network monitoring and control. The network consists of two VHF and one UHF wind profiling Doppler radars. Additional measurement systems added to the network include temperature and humidity profiling radiometers, sodar for boundary layer wind profiling and selected surface based baseline systems. Remote diagnostic capabilities were also implemented in the Penn State network. It is possible to remotely analyze many specific malfunctions of the transmitter or signal processor.

Solar dynamic power systems for space station

The Parabolic Offset Linearly Actuated Reflector (POLAR) solar dynamic module was selected as the baseline design for a solar dynamic power system aboard the space station. The POLAR concept was chosen over other candidate designs after extensive trade studies. The primary advantages of the POLAR concept are the low mass moment of inertia of the module about the transverse boom and the compactness of the stowed module which enables packaging of two complete modules in the Shuttle orbiter payload bay. The fine pointing control system required for the solar dynamic module has been studied and initial results indicate that if disturbances from the station are allowed to back drive the rotary alpha joint, pointing errors caused by transient loads on the space station can be minimized. This would allow pointing controls to operate in bandwidths near system structural frequencies. The incorporation of the fine pointing control system into the solar dynamic module is fairly straightforward for the three strut concentrator support structure. However, results of structural analyses indicate that this three strut support is not optimum. Incorporation of a vernier pointing system into the proposed six strut support structure is being studied.

Real time identification of large space structures

Identification of frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes of large space structures (LSSs) are examined in real time. Real time processing allows for quick updates of model processing after a reconfiguration of structural failure. Recursive lattice least squares (RLLS) was selected as the baseline algorithm for the identification. Simulation results on a one dimensional LSS demonstrated that it provides good estimates, was not ill-conditioned in the presence of under-excited modes, allowed activity by a supervisory control system which prevented damage to the LSS or excessive drift, and was capable of real-time processing for typical LSS models. A suboptimal version of RLLS, which is equivalent to simulated parallel processing, was derived. A NASTRAN model of the dual keel U.S. space station was used to demonstrate the input/identification algorithm package in a more realistic simulation. Because the first eight flexible modes were very close together, the identification was much more difficult than in the simple examples. Even so, the model was accurately identified in real time.

Wind-tunnel investigation of aerodynamic characteristics and wing pressure distributions of an airplane with variable-sweep wings modified for laminar flow

A wind tunnel test was conducted to evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics and wing pressure distributions of a variable wing sweep aircraft having wing panels that are modified to promote laminar flow. The modified wing section shapes were incorporated over most of the exposed outer wing panel span and were obtained by extending the leading edge and adding thickness to the existing wing upper surface forward of 60 percent chord. Two different wing configurations, one each for Mach numbers 0.7 and 0.8, were tested on the model simultaneously, with one wing configuration on the left side and the other on the right. The tests were conducted at Mach numbers 0.20 to 0.90 for wing sweep angles of 20, 25, 30, and 35 degrees. Longitudinal, lateral and directional aerodynamic characteristics of the modified and baseline configurations, and selected pressure distributions for the modified configurations, are presented in graphical form without analysis. A tabulation of the pressure data for the modified configuration is available as microfiche.

Crew emergency return vehicle - Electrical power system design study

A crew emergency return vehicle (CERV) is proposed to perform the lifeboat function for the manned Space Station Freedom. This escape module will be permanently docked to Freedom and, on demand, will be capable of safely returning the crew to earth. The unique requirements that the CERV imposes on its power source are presented, power source options are examined, and a baseline system is selected. It consists of an active Li-BCX DD-cell modular battery system and was chosen for the maturity of its man-rated design and its low development costs.

Test results for composite specimens and elements containing joints and cutouts

A program was conducted to develop the technology for joints and cutouts in a composite fuselage that meets all design requirements of a large transport aircraft for the 1990s. An advanced trijet derivative of the DC-10 was selected as the baseline aircraft. Design and analysis of a 30-foot-long composite fuselage barrel provided a realistic basis for the test effort. The primary composite material was Hexcel F584 resin on 12 K IM6 fiber, in tape and broadgoods form. Fiberglass broadgoods were used in E-glass and S-glass fiber form in the cutout region of some panels. Additionally, injection-molded chopped graphite fiber/PEEK was used for longeron-to-frame shear clips. The test effort included four groups of test specimens, beginning with coupon specimens of mono-layer and cross-piled laminates, progressing through increasingly larger and more complex specimens, and ending with two 4- by 5-foot curved fuselage side panels. One of the side panels incorporated a transverse skin splice, while the second included two cabin window cutouts.
