Electron-Ion Collider Design Status

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is being designed for construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Activities have been focused on beam-beam simulations, polarization studies, and beam dynamics, as well as on maturing the layout and lattice design of the constituent accelerators and the interaction region. The latest design advances will be presented.

Parallel Simulation of Beam Dynamics in Particle Accelerators [Slides]

LW3D was used to explore the expected CSR from an undulator-based diagnostic using a first-principles approach. It was also used for comparison with an analytic Green-function approach. LW3D was extended to model transport systems involving dipoles and quadrupoles. It was used to explore the radiation produced in a 4-dipole bunch compressor. Radiation ahead of the electron bunch at the beamline exit was shown to be associated with wavefronts produced in upstream dipoles overtaking the bunch.

Electrostatic wave observation during a space simulation beam-plasma discharge

ELF waves which were observed during beam-plasma discharge in the large vacuum chamber at Johnson Space Center are studied. Phase delays as a function of radius (obtained from cross-correlation measurements of density fluctuations) along with measurements of frequency and plasma potential, density, and temperature have been compared to a zero-order slab model of nonlocal azimuthal drift wave propagation. The inferred wave phase velocity in the plasma frame after Doppler correction is found to be near one half the electron diamagnetic drift velocity. Although the measurements presented do not uniquely define a propagation mode, a model of azimuthal drift wave propagation is found to be consistent with observations.

Beam-dynamics codes used at DARHT

Several beam simulation codes are used to help gain a better understanding of beam dynamics in the DARHT LIAs. The most notable of these fall into the following categories: for beam production – Tricomp Trak orbit tracking code, LSP Particle in cell (PIC) code, for beam transport and acceleration – XTR static envelope and centroid code, LAMDA time-resolved envelope and centroid code, LSP-Slice PIC code, for coasting-beam transport to target – LAMDA time-resolved envelope code, LSP-Slice PIC code. These codes are also being used to inform the design of Scorpius.

Robust design of distributed controllers for large flexible space structures

Independent Modal Space Control (IMSC) method avoids control spillover generated by conventional control schemes such as Coupled Modal Control by decoupling the large flexible space structure into independent subsystems of second order and controlling each mode independently. The IMSC implementation requires that the number of actuators be equal to that of modeled modes, which is in general very huge. Consequently the number of required actuators is unrealizable. Two methods are proposed for the implementation of IMSC with reduced number of actuators. In the first method, the first m modes are optimized, leaving the last (n-m) modes unchanged. In the second method, generalized inverse matrices are employed to design the feedback controller so that the control scheme is suboptimal with respect to IMSC. The performance of the proposed methods is tested by performing computer simulation on a simply support beam. Simulation results are presented and discussed.
