An exopolysaccharide pathway from a freshwater Sphingomonas isolate

Bacteria embellish their cell envelopes with a variety of specialized polysaccharides. Biosynthesis pathways for these glycans are complex, and final products vary greatly in their chemical structures, physical properties, and biological activities. This tremendous diversity comes from the ability to arrange complex pools of monosaccharide building blocks into polymers with many possible linkage configurations. Due to the complex chemistry of bacterial glycans, very few biosynthetic pathways have been defined in detail. As part of an initiative to characterize novel polysaccharide biosynthesis enzymes, we isolated a bacterium from Lake Michigan called Sphingomonas sp. LM7 that is proficient in exopolysaccharide (EPS) production. We identified genes that contribute to EPS biosynthesis in LM7 by screening a transposon mutant library for colonies displaying altered colony morphology. A gene cluster was identified that appears to encode a complete wzy/wzx-dependent polysaccharide assembly pathway. Deleting individual genes in this cluster caused a non-mucoid phenotype and a corresponding loss of EPS secretion, confirming the role of this gene cluster in polysaccharide production. We extracted EPS from LM7 cultures and determined that it contains a linear chain of 3- and 4-linked glucose, galactose, and glucuronic acid residues. Finally, we show that the EPS pathway in Sphingomonas sp. LM7 diverges from that of sphingan-family EPSs and adhesive polysaccharides such as the holdfast that are present in other Alphaproteobacteria. Our approach of characterizing complete biosynthetic pathways holds promise for engineering polysaccharides with valuable properties.

Effect of Branching on Rod-coil Polyimides as Membrane Materials for Lithium Polymer Batteries

This paper describes a series of rod-coil block co-polymers that produce easy to fabricate, dimensionally stable films with good ionic conductivity down to room temperature for use as electrolytes for lithium polymer batteries. The polymers consist of short, rigid rod polyimide segments, alternating with flexible, polyalkylene oxide coil segments. The highly incompatible rods and coils should phase separate, especially in the presence of lithium ions. The coil phase would allow for conduction of lithium ions, while the rigid rod phase would provide a high degree of dimensional stability. An optimization study was carried out to study the effect of four variables (degree of branching, formulated molecular weight, polymerization solvent and lithium salt concentration) on ionic conductivity, glass transition temperature and dimensional stability in this system.

Mechanical Characterization of Stacked Single-Crystal of Polyethylene and Monolayer MoSe 2

Polymer single crystal (SC) is a key building block of semicrystalline polymers. However, direct experimental measurement of freestanding mono-lamella polymer SC has not been demonstrated. This is, in large part, due to the difficulties associated with manipulating freestanding individual mono-lamella SC because of its extremely low rigidity and low robustness. Here, we demonstrate a new strategy to successfully suspend and test a polymer SC by using a 2D material as backing. In particular, mono-lamella polyethylene (PE) SC is stacked on monolayer MoSe 2 , and the hybrid stacks can be suspended over microholes. Nanoindentation is used to probe the suspended PE-SC/MoSe2 stacks and MoSe 2 monolayers. The results suggest the first experimentally-measured in-plane moduli of PE-SC and 2D MoSe 2 as 32 ± 3 and 237 ± 15 GPa, respectively. Such a stacked unit represents an ultrathin structure of polymer-ceramic laminate and the idea can be applied to other laminated composite systems. Therefore, this research will pave the way to accurately measure the mechanical properties of polymer SCs and their composites, as well as provide a key insight on designing composite structures.

Tuning the Mechanical and Electric Properties of Conjugated Polymer Semiconductors: Side–Chain Design Based on Asymmetric Benzodithiophene Building Blocks

Understanding molecular design rules for stretchable polymer semiconductors is important for enabling next generation stretchable electronic circuits. To simultaneously improve both electrical properties and mechanical stretchability, a design strategy is reported in introducing conjugated rigid fused-rings with bulky side groups in semiconducting polymers. In this work, the understanding of this design concept is improved by systematically investigating the effect of different types of bulky side groups asymmetrically substituted on conjugated polymer semiconductor backbones. Specifically, four types of side groups are investigated, including naphthalene (NaPh), biphenyl (PhPh), thienylphenyl (ThPh), and alkylphenyl (C4Ph), asymmetrically substituted on benzodithiophene units, namely asy-BDT. With the four types of side groups installed on BDT-containing conjugated polymers in an asymmetrical fashion, it is observed that they reduced the polymer chain aggregation and film crystallinity, hence improving the film stretchability. Furthermore, the fully conjugated polymer back-bone allows maintenance of good charge carrier mobilities. Specifically, polymer PDPP-C4Ph (with C4Ph side groups) shows the highest mobility in the fully stretchable transistor and maintained its mobility even after being subjected to hundreds of stretching-releasing cycles at 25% strain. Altogether, the results provide anunderstanding of the use of asymmetrically substituted fused-ring conjugated polymer structures to tune mechanical and charge transport properties.

Amphiphilic Block Copolymers for Flocculation and Hydrophobization of Legacy Waste Suspensions in Flotation Driven Dewatering Operations - 20162

Flotation has been effectively demonstrated as a low footprint, high efficiency separation process when utilising simple anionic surface modifying agents such as sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). These agents increase hydrophobicity to remove suspended cationic surface charged particulates such as Mg(OH){sub 2} from waste suspensions similar to those at British nuclear fuel management sites- where corrosion processes have degraded fuel cladding. The technology is advantageous as it could effectively be retrofitted into existing waste management facilities at nuclear waste management sites such Sellafield and Hanford as the simplicity (no moving parts) and size of this technology coupled with low cost of construction could be rapidly deployed to aid in risk and hazard reduction decommissioning operations with minimum impact to secondary waste generation. Previously, sodium dodecyl sulphate has been deployed as a collector agent to increase the hydrophobicity of Mg(OH){sub 2} suspended particles, achieving a maximum particulate extraction percentage of 93%. To achieve further particulate extraction, flotation performance has been determined to be a function of the hydrodynamic limitations extracting fine material (>20 μm). Fine particulates have been shown in the minerals industry to have an inability to overcome slipstreams created from rising bubbles in flotation cells, likely due to the low mass and thus momentum of the colloidal material, preventing interaction between the hydrophobized particles and air-water interfaces (bubbles). To combat this mass transfer resistance poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(n-butyl acrylate) amphiphilic diblock copolymers were synthesised via reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerisation. The anticipated mode of action of these polymers involves the hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) block polymer acting as a flocculation agent to increase the mass of the aggregates, and the hydrophobic poly(n-butyl acrylate) modifies the hydrophobicity of the resulting flocs. The concentration of this polymer (termed a macro-collector) was varied and the change in particle size distribution of the particulate suspension was analysed using static light scattering. The flotation performance was then characterised by several methods including percentage particulate recovery, volume reduction factor and residual bulk particulate concentration. This was then benchmarked against the traditional surfactant collector agent SDS. (authors)

Tradeoff between Intermolecular Interaction and Backbone Disorder by High Molecular Dipole Block for Improving Blend Morphology of Polymer Solar Cells

Constructing terpolymer has attracted increasing attention as a strategy to improve the performance of polymer solar cell. Terpolymer usually offers an opportunity to lower the frontier molecular orbital energy level, introduces additional absorption band and sometimes optimizes the morphology of the active blend. Generally, the additional segment in terpolymer backbone inevitably introduces backbone disorder, which causes entropy rises. However, selecting a suitable dipole unit introduces extra driving forces for crystallization by enhancing intermolecular interactions. This provides a handy knob for tradeoff between intermolecular interaction and backbone disorder, thus regulating the blend morphology. In this study, a high dipole and electron-deficient group of pyrrolo[3,4-f ]benzotriazole-5,7(6H)-dione (TzBI) is incorporated into the high-performance donor polymer and a series of terpolymers with different content of TzBI are designed. As expected, the morphology is optimized gradually for improving charge generation and charge transport, also suppressing charge recombination. The champion device with 10% TzBI exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.36%, which is 5% increase compared to the controlled device. This study presents a charming terpolymer strategy by highly electron-deficient and high dipole segment to realize a tradeoff between intermolecular interaction and backbone disorder, facilitating the optimization of morphology and elevation of fill factor and device efficiency.

Accelerating ion transport by dynamic asymmetry of alternating polymer electrolytes

Polymer based electrolytes allow the absence of volatile components in batteries thus increasing their safety. Yet, they exhibit drawbacks based on their low conductivity. We have used an alternating polymer consisting of dimethyl siloxane (DMS) and ethylene glycol (EG) blocks to circumvent known disadvantages of the usually used polyethylene glycol (PEG). Incorporating dimethyl siloxane lowers the glass-transition temperature and thus reduces the segmental relaxation time, by dynamic asymmetry or internal plasticization of the constituting polymer blocks. The alternating structure ensures miscibility of the different components and hinders crystallization. Furthermore, the pure polymer, P(DMS 3 -alt-EG 4 ), shows a segmental relaxation time well in the range needed for polymer electrolytes. Mixtures of LiClO 4 and P(DMS 3 -alt-EG 4 ) show a drastically reduced temperature dependence of their DC conductivity in comparison to PEG based systems, resulting in an increase by two orders of magnitude at T = 5 °C and even three to four orders of magnitude at T = 0 °C. Addition of coordinating (acetonitrile) or non-coordinating (toluene) solvent increases conductivity either via additional plasticization or by weakening the Li-binding yet looking at the dynamics at low concentrations of additional solvent the mobility of the polymer is reduced. In conclusion, the solvent addition leads only at higher solvent concentration to a reduction in relaxation time.

Design Principles for Using Amphiphilic Polymers To Create Microporous Water

Aqueous dispersions of microporous nanocrystals with dry, gas-accessible pores—referred to as “microporous water”—enable high densities of gas molecules to be transported through water. For many applications of microporous water, generalizable strategies are required to functionalize the external surface of microporous particles to control their dispersibility, stability, and interactions with other solution-phase components—including catalysts, proteins, and cells—while retaining as much of their internal pore volume as possible. Here, in this work, we establish design principles for the noncovalent surface functionalization of hydrophobic metal–organic frameworks with amphiphilic polymers that render the particles dispersible in water and enhance their hydrolytic stability. Specifically, we show that block co-polymers with persistence lengths that exceed the micropore aperture size of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) can dramatically enhance ZIF particle dispersibility and stability while preserving porosity and >80% of the theoretical O 2 carrying capacity. Moreover, enhancements in hydrolytic stability are greatest when the polymer can form strong bonds to exposed metal sites on the external particle surface. More broadly, our insights provide guidelines for controlling the interface between polymers and metal–organic framework particles in aqueous environments to augment the properties of microporous water.

Effect of microphase separation on the limiting current density in hybrid organic-inorganic copolymer electrolytes

Hybrid organic-inorganic block copolymer electrolytes are of interest to enable batteries containing lithium metal anodes. The conductive block is a standard polymer electrolyte of poly(ethylene oxide) and the mechanically rigid block is an inorganic poly(acryloisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane) polymer. Here, in this paper, we compare a poly(acryloisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane)-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(acryloisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane) (POSS-PEO-POSS) triblock copolymer and a poly(ethylene oxide)-b- poly(acryloisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane) (PEO-POSS) diblock copolymer mixed with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide salt. We have experimentally measured the limiting current density in lithium symmetric cells containing hybrid organic-inorganic electrolytes at 90 °C. The cells were polarized at a large range of applied current density. The diblock copolymer electrolyte exhibited a clear plateau in cell potential at all current densities below the limiting current density. At low applied current density, the triblock copolymer electrolyte also exhibited a clear plateau in cell potential. At currents approaching the limiting current density, the triblock copolymer electrolyte exhibited an underdamped potential profile. The cell potential did not reach a plateau at current densities above the limiting current in both systems. The diblock and triblock copolymer electrolytes were fully characterized using electrochemical methods to determine the ionic conductivity, cation current fraction, salt diffusion coefficient, and open circuit voltage as a function of salt concentration. Cell potential and salt concentration as functions of position in the cell at various current densities were calculated using Newman's concentrated solution theory. The theoretical limiting current density was calculated to be the current density at which salt is depleted at the cathode. We see quantitative agreement between experimental measurements and theoretical predictions for the limiting current density in the diblock copolymer electrolyte which has an ordered structure at all salt concentrations, while the experimental limiting current density is lower than the theoretical prediction for the triblock copolymer electrolyte, which exhibits a disordered morphology at high salt concentrations.

B—N–Bond–Embedded Triplet Terpolymers with Small Singlet–Triplet Energy Gaps for Suppressing Non–Radiative Recombination and Improving Blend Morphology in Organic Solar Cells

Suppressing the photon energy loss (E loss ), especially the non-radiative loss, is of importance to further improve the device performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, typical π-conjugated semiconductors possess a large singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔE ST ), leading to a lower triplet state than charge transfer state and contributing to a non-radiative loss channel of the photocurrent by the triplet state. Herein, a series of triplet polymer donors are developed by introducing a BNIDT block into the PM6 polymer backbone. Further, the high electron affinity of BNIDT and the opposite resonance effect of the B—N bond in BNIDT results in a lowered highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and a largely reduced ΔE ST . Moreover, the morphology of the active blends is also optimized by fine-tuning the BNIDT content. Therefore, non-radiative recombination via the terminal triplet loss channels and morphology traps is effectively suppressed. The PNB-3 (with 3% BNIDT):L8-BO device exhibits both small ΔE ST and optimized morphology, favoring more efficient charge transfer and transport. Finally, the simultaneously enhanced V oc of 0.907 V, J sc of 26.59 mA cm –2 , and FF of 78.86% contribute to a champion PCE of 19.02%. Therefore, introducing B—N bonds into benchmark polymers is a possible avenue toward higher-performance of OSCs.

Benzimidazolone-Dioxazine Pigments-Based Conjugated Polymers for Organic Field-Effect Transistor

Molecules based on benzimidazolone-dioxazine are known as blue/violet pigments and have been commercialized for decades. However, unfavorable solubility limits the application of these structures as building blocks of conjugated polymers despite their low band gaps. Herein, a series of donor–acceptor conjugated polymers containing soluble benzimidazolone-dioxazine structures as the acceptors and oligothiophene as donors are synthesized and investigated. With increasing numbers of thiophene rings, the steric hindrance diminishes and high molecular weight polymers can be achieved, leading to an improved performance in organic field effect transistor devices. The hole mobility of polymers with three to six thiophene units is in the order of 10 -1 cm2 V -1 s -1 . Among all the polymers, polymer P3 with three thiophene units between benzimidazolone-dioxazine structures shows the best hole mobility of 0.4 cm2 V -1 s -1 . Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering results reveal that the high mobility of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) can be accredited by matched donor–acceptor packing in the solid thin films.

Standalone Block Copolymer Nanoballoons: Decoupling Self-Assembly from Implementation in Nanomanufacturing

Here we report a facile method to produce isolatable hollow-core elastomeric vesicles, “nanoballoons”, prepared via block copolymer self-assembly in a polymer blend. Poly(isoprene-block-dimethylsiloxane) (PI-PDMS) diblock copolymers are blended with PDMS homopolymers (h-PDMS) as a “solvent” phase to template the self-assembly of PDMS-tethered vesicles with PI walls. The walls are subsequently crosslinked to yield mechanically stabilized elastomeric vesicles. The h-PDMS inner-core and matrix are separated from the vesicles by dialysis to yield the matrix-free nanoballoons. These objects, 0.3 – 1 μm in diameter, can be further reincorporated into a crosslinkable PDMS. Throughout the self-assembly, recovery, and reincorporation processes we apply several techniques including solvent dispersion/dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM)/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to provide a consilient body of evidence that the nanoballoon morphology is retained. Furthermore, this work presents advanced nanomanufacturing schema that illustrate the decoupling of the thermodynamic and dynamic factors that govern macromolecular self-assembly from the environment in which the self-assembled objects are deployed.

Perspectives for Polymer Electrolytes: A View from Fundamentals of Ionic Conductivity

We present a brief overview of current developments in the field of polymer electrolytes, with the focus on single-ion conducting polymers. The latter have significant advantages relative to electrolytes with dual-ion conductivity for use in energy storage devices. First we discuss various mechanisms of ionic conductivity in polymers and fundamental limitations imposed by these mechanisms. We also emphasize the role of ion–ion correlations in conductivity that are not negligible in concentrated and semidilute ionic systems. Next we discuss several classes of polymer electrolytes (gels, block copolymers, and composites) that are already employed or have good potential to be employed in current battery technologies. At the end we discuss perspectives for the design of dry single-ion conducting polymer electrolytes with required room temperature conductivity.
