Pnictogen Bonding at the Core of a Carbene-Stiborane-Gold Complex: Impact on Structure and Reactivity

Our interest in the design of ambiphilic ligands and their coordination to gold has led us to synthesize an indazol-3-ylidene gold chloride complex functionalized at the 4-position of the indazole backbone by a stibine functionality. The antimony center of this new complex cleanly reacts with o-chloranil to afford the corresponding stiborane derivative. Structural analysis indicates that the stiborane coordination environment is best described as a distorted square pyramid whose open face is oriented toward the gold center, allowing for the formation of a long donor–acceptor, or pnictogen, Au → Sb bonding interaction. The presence of this interaction, which has been probed computationally, is also manifested in the enhanced catalytic activity of this complex in the cyclization of N-propargyl-4-fluorobenzamide.

Heterogeneous Fe-N-C Catalyst for Aerobic Dehydrogenation of Hydrazones to Diazo Compounds Used for Carbene Transfer

Organic diazo compounds are versatile reagents in chemical synthesis and would benefit from improved synthetic accessibility, especially for larger scale applications. Here, we report a mild method for the synthesis of diazo compounds from hydrazones using a heterogeneous Fe-N-C catalyst, which has Fe ions dispersed within a graphitic nitrogen-doped carbon support. The reactions proceed readily at room temperature using O 2 (1 atm) as the oxidant. Aryl diazoesters, ketones, and amides are accessible, in addition to less stable diaryl diazo compounds. Initial-rate data show that the Fe-N-C catalyst achieves faster rates than a heterogeneous Pt/C catalyst. The oxidative dehydrogenation of hydrazones may be performed in tandem with Rh-catalyzed enantioselective C–H insertion and cyclopropanation of alkenes, without requiring isolation of the diazo intermediate. Furthermore, this sequence is showcased by using a flow reactor for continuous synthesis of diazo compounds.

Vibrational wavepacket dynamics in Fe carbene photosensitizer determined with femtosecond X-ray emission and scattering

Abstract The non-equilibrium dynamics of electrons and nuclei govern the function of photoactive materials. Disentangling these dynamics remains a critical goal for understanding photoactive materials. Here we investigate the photoinduced dynamics of the [Fe(bmip) 2 ] 2+ photosensitizer, where bmip = 2,6-bis(3-methyl-imidazole-1-ylidine)-pyridine, with simultaneous femtosecond-resolution Fe Kα and Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and X-ray solution scattering (XSS). This measurement shows temporal oscillations in the XES and XSS difference signals with the same 278 fs period oscillation. These oscillations originate from an Fe-ligand stretching vibrational wavepacket on a triplet metal-centered ( 3 MC) excited state surface. This 3 MC state is populated with a 110 fs time constant by 40% of the excited molecules while the rest relax to a 3 MLCT excited state. The sensitivity of the Kα XES to molecular structure results from a 0.7% average Fe-ligand bond length shift between the 1 s and 2p core-ionized states surfaces.

High-resolution infrared spectroscopy of supersonically cooled singlet carbenes: Bromomethylene (HCBr) in the CH stretch region

First high-resolution spectra of cold (~35 K) singlet bromomethylene HCBr in the CH stretching (v 1 ) region from 2770 to 2850 cm-1 are reported using near quantum shot-noise limited laser absorption methods in a slit jet supersonic discharge expansion source. Three rovibrational bands are identified at high S/N (20:1 - 40:1) and rotationally assigned to i) the CH stretch fundamental (v 1 ) band $\tilde{X}$(1,0,0) ← $\tilde{X}$ (0,0,0) and ii) vibrational hot bands ($\tilde{X}$(1,1,0) ← $\tilde{X}$(0,1,0) and $\tilde{X}$(1,0,1) ← $\tilde{X}$(0,0,1)) arising from vibrationally excited HCBr populated in the discharge with single quanta in either the H–C–Br bend (v 2 ) or C–Br stretch (v 3 ) modes. Precision rotational constants are reported for a total of six states, with an experimentally determined CH stretch vibrational frequency (2799.38 cm -1 ) in good agreement with previous low-resolution fluorescence studies. Detailed analysis of the fundamental v 1 band highlights the presence of perturbations in the $\tilde{X}$(1,0,0) level, which we tentatively attribute to arise from the nearby triplet state $\tilde{a}$(0,0,1) through spin-orbit interaction or the multiple quanta $\tilde{X}$(0,2,1) singlet state via c-type Coriolis coupling. Reduced-Doppler resolution (60 MHz) in the slit-jet IR spectrometer permits clear observation of nuclear spin hyperfine structure, with experimental line shapes well reproduced by nuclear quadrupole/spin-rotation coupling constants from microwave studies. Lastly, the a-type to b-type transition intensity ratio for the fundamental CH stretch band is notably larger than predicted by a bond-dipole model, which from high level ab initio quantum calculations (CCSD(T)/PVQZ) can be attributed to vibrationally induced “charge-sloshing” of electron density along the polar C–Br bond.
