Assessing the impact of valence sd neutrons and protons on fusion

Experimental near-barrier fusion cross sections for 17 F + 12 C are compared to the fusion excitation functions for 16,17,18 O, 19 F, and 20 Ne ions on a carbon target. Normalized or reduced fusion cross sections are utilized in order to compare the different systems and account for the differing static size of the incident ions as well as changes in fusion barrier. Fusion excitation functions for the case of the mirror nuclei 17 F and 17 O with a single sd nucleon are compared. The 17 F data are also juxtaposed with nuclei involving multiple sd nucleons. Trends of the fusion cross section above the barrier beyond the expected systematic behavior are observed. These trends are interpreted as the interplay of the sd protons and neutrons. Furthermore, the experimental data are also compared to a widely used analytic model of near-barrier fusion, a time-dependent Hartree-Fock model, and coupled channels calculations.

Proton and neutron exchange as a prelude to fusion at near-barrier energies

Systematic examination of fusion for 39,41,45,47 K + 28 Si and 36,44 Ar + 28 Si provides insight into the impact of neutron and proton exchange on fusion for nuclei at and near the N = 20 and N = 28 shells. Comparison of the reduced excitation functions reveals a marked difference between the behavior of open-shell and closed-shell systems. While coupled channels calculations provide a good description for the closed-shell nuclei, they significantly underpredict the fusion cross section for open-shell nuclei. Furthermore, the observed trends are examined in the context of a potential energy surface, including shell effects, and multinucleon exchange with consideration of Pauli blocking.

Updated analysis of the Er 170 ( p , t ) Er 168 reaction data

More than 200 states up to 4.1 MeV excitation have been populated in 168 Er with the 170 Er ( p , t ) reaction at 25 MeV incident energy. About 80 of these states, with 0 + and 2 + assignments, were reported in a previous publication [D. Bucurescu et al., Phys. Rev. C 73, 064309 (2006)]. Here, the present work considerably enriches the knowledge of this nucleus. A multistep coupled-channels analysis of the angular distributions is now presented for all the states observed in this experiment. Spin and parity values between 0 + and 7 - are newly assigned for more than 100 states. For the states already reported in the ENSDF database with J π values there is a good agreement with our values. The 168 Er nucleus remains one of the best experimentally known nuclei for states with low and medium spins below 4 MeV excitation energy, representing a challenge for future microscopic structure model calculations aiming to disentangle the contributions of different excitation degrees of freedom.

Structures in the heavy-ion fusion excitation function at and above the Coulomb barrier

Contrary to descriptions from coupled-channels or other model calculations, heavy-ion fusion excitation functions are not smooth near and above the Coulomb barrier. There appear to be weak but noticeable oscillations or structures within the excitation functions that can be observed clearly in representation $d (σ E)/d E$ and in the comparison with theoretical calculations $σ (E) – σ_{th}(E)$. Importantly, a rather similar phenomenon has been studied before and can be explained in light symmetric systems as the influence of the centrifugal barrier penetration only on even angular momentum, but it cannot be extended to heavier, more asymmetric fusion systems. A more thorough investigation may be required to investigate this newly indicated behavior.

Photoproduction of two charged pions off protons in the resonance region

Photoproduction of charged pions pairs off protons is studied within the invariant masses of the final state hadrons from 1.6 to 2.4 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility with the CLAS detector. The total and differential cross sections and spin-density matrix elements are presented for the isobars pρ 0 (770), Δ(1232) ++ π − , and Δ(1232) 0 π + . The data are included in the Bonn-Gatchina coupled-channel analysis and provide the information necessary to determine the branching fractions of Nρ(770) decays for most known N* and Δ* resonances. For the first time, the Nρ branching ratios are obtained here from an event-based likelihood to γp → π + π − p.

Lattice model of heavy-light three-body system

We present a study of a $1+1$ dimensional heavy-light three-body system in finite volume. The heavy-light system is simulated by a coupled-channel $\phi^4$ type lattice model, and both ground state and excited states of multiparticle energy spectra are measured on various lattices. The lattice simulation data analysis is performed based on variational approach.

Dalitz plots and lineshape of a 1 ( 1260 ) from a relativistic three-body unitary approach

We formulate the final-state interaction of the a 1 ( 1260 ) resonance decay in a manifestly three-body unitary parametrization and fit it to the a 1 ( 1260 ) line shape measured by the ALEPH experiment. Dalitz plots calculated from this fit are presented. The work demonstrates the feasibility to numerically solve a previously derived amplitude and its generalization to isobars with spin and coupled channels. The model can also be applied to other meson decays and modified for the finite-volume problem as it arises in lattice QCD due to its manifest unitarity.

Lattice QCD study of π Σ − K ¯ N scattering and the Λ ( 1405 ) resonance

A lattice QCD computation of the coupled channel π Σ – K ¯ N scattering amplitudes in the Λ ( 1405 ) region is detailed. Results are obtained using a single ensemble of gauge field configurations with N f = 2 + 1 dynamical quark flavors and m π ≈ 200 MeV and m K ≈ 487 MeV . Hermitian correlation matrices using both single baryon and meson-baryon interpolating operators for a variety of different total momenta and irreducible representations are used. Several parametrizations of the two-channel scattering K -matrix are utilized to obtain the scattering amplitudes from the finite-volume spectrum. The amplitudes, continued to the complex energy plane, exhibit a virtual bound state below the π Σ threshold and a resonance pole just below the K ¯ N threshold. Timelike meson form factors beyond the elastic region from lattice QCD

We present a calculation of the vector-isovector timelike form factors of the pion and the kaon using lattice quantum chromodynamics. We calculate two-point correlation functions with m π ∼ 280 MeV , extracting both the finite-volume spectrum and matrix elements for these states created from the vacuum by a vector current. After determining the coupled-channel π π , K K ¯ scattering amplitudes, we perform the necessary correction for the significant finite-volume effects present in the current matrix elements, leading to the timelike form factors. We find these to be dominated by the presence of the ρ resonance, and we extract its decay constant by an analytic continuation of the amplitudes to the resonance pole. In addition, the spacelike pion form factor is determined on the same lattice configurations, and a dispersive parametrization is used to simultaneously describe the spacelike and elastic timelike regions. Coupled heat pulse propagation in two-fluid plasmas

Because of the large mass differences between electrons and ions, the heat diffusion in electron-ion plasmas exhibits more complex behavior than simple heat diffusion found in typical gas mixtures. In particular, heat is diffused in two distinct, but coupled, channels. Conventional single fluid models neglect the resulting complexity, and can often inaccurately interpret the results of heat pulse experiments. However, by recognizing the sensitivity of the electron temperature evolution to the ion diffusivity, not only can previous experiments be interpreted correctly, but informative simultaneous measurements can be made of both ion and electron heat channels.

Study of Quasielastic Barrier Distributions as a Step towards the Synthesis of Superheavy Elements with Hot Fusion Reactions

The excitation functions for quasielastic scattering of Ne 22 + Cm 248 , Mg 26 + Cm 248 , and Ca 48 + U 238 are measured using a gas-filled recoil ion separator. The quasielastic barrier distributions are extracted for these systems and are compared with coupled-channel calculations. The results indicate that the barrier distribution is affected dominantly by deformation of the actinide target nuclei, but also by vibrational or rotational excitations of the projectile nuclei, as well as neutron transfer processes before capture. From a comparison between the experimental barrier distributions and the evaporation residue cross sections for Sg ( Z = 106 ), Hs (108), Cn (112), and Lv (116), it is suggested that the hot fusion reactions take advantage of a compact collision, where the projectile approaches along the short axis of a prolately deformed nucleus. Overall, a new method is proposed to estimate the optimum incident energy to synthesize unknown superheavy nuclei using the barrier distribution.

Two-Center Interference in the Photoionization Delays of Kr 2

Herein we present the experimental observation of two-center interference in the ionization time delays of Kr 2 . Using attosecond electron-ion-coincidence spectroscopy, we simultaneously measure the photoionization delays of krypton monomer and dimer. The relative time delay is found to oscillate as a function of the electron kinetic energy, an effect that is traced back to constructive and destructive interference of the photoelectron wave packets that are emitted or scattered from the two atomic centers. Our interpretation of the experimental results is supported by solving the time-independent Schrödinger equation of a 1D double-well potential, as well as coupled-channel multiconfigurational quantum-scattering calculations of Kr 2 . This work opens the door to the study of a broad class of quantum-interference effects in photoionization delays and demonstrates the potential of attosecond coincidence spectroscopy for studying weakly bound systems.

Observation of a Resonant Structure near the D s + D s - Threshold in the B + → D s + D s - K + Decay

An amplitude analysis of the B + → $D^{+}_{s}$ $D^{-}_{s}$ ⁢K + decay is carried out to study for the first time its intermediate resonant contributions, using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. A near-threshold peaking structure, referred to as X⁡(3960), is observed in the $D^{+}_{s}$ $D^{-}_{s}$ invariant-mass spectrum with significance greater than 12 standard deviations. The mass, width, and the quantum numbers of the structure are measured to be 3956 ± 5 ± 10 MeV, 43 ± 13 ± 8 MeV, and J P⁢C = 0 ++ , respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The properties of the new structure are consistent with recent theoretical predictions for a state composed of c$\overline{c}$s$\overline{s}$ quarks. Evidence for an additional structure is found around 4140 MeV in the $D^{+}_{s}$ $D^{-}_{s}$ invariant mass, which might be caused either by a new resonance with the 0 ++ assignment or by a J/ψ⁢Φ ↔ $D^{+}_{s}$ $D^{-}_{s}$ coupled-channel effect.

Two-Pole Nature of the Λ ( 1405 ) Resonance from Lattice QCD

This Letter presents the first lattice QCD computation of the coupled channel π Σ − K ¯ N scattering amplitudes at energies near 1405 MeV. These amplitudes contain the resonance Λ ( 1405 ) with strangeness S = − 1 and isospin, spin, and parity quantum numbers I ( J P ) = 0 ( 1 / 2 − ) . However, whether there is a single resonance or two nearby resonance poles in this region is controversial theoretically and experimentally. Using single-baryon and meson-baryon operators to extract the finite-volume stationary-state energies to obtain the scattering amplitudes at slightly unphysical quark masses corresponding to m π ≈ 200 MeV and m K ≈ 487 MeV , this study finds the amplitudes exhibit a virtual bound state below the π Σ threshold in addition to the established resonance pole just below the K ¯ N threshold. Several parametrizations of the two-channel K matrix are employed to fit the lattice QCD results, all of which support the two-pole picture suggested by SU(3) chiral symmetry and unitarity. Precise Measurement of the e + e − → D s + D s − Cross Section at Center-of-Mass Energies from Threshold to 4.95 GeV

Using the e + e − collision data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, at center-of-mass energies from the threshold to 4.95 GeV, we present precise measurements of the cross section for the process e + e − → D s + D s − using a single-tag method. The resulting cross section line shape exhibits several new structures, thereby offering an input for a future coupled-channel analysis and model tests, which are critical to understand vector charmonium-like states with masses between 4 and 5 GeV. Quark structure of the $\chi _{\mathrm{c}}(3P)$ and X(4274) resonances and their strong and radiative decays

We calculate the masses of χc(3P) states with threshold corrections in a coupled-channel model. The model was recently applied to the description of the properties of χc(2P) and χb(3P) multiplets (Ferretti and Santopinto in Phys Lett B 789:550, 2019]. We also compute the open-charm strong decay widths of the χc(3P) states and their radiative transitions. According to our predictions, the χc(3P) states should be dominated by the charmonium core, but they may also show small meson-meson components. The X(4274) is interpreted as a cc¯ χc1(3P) state. More information on the other members of the χc(3P) multiplet, as well as a more rigorous analysis of the X(4274)’s decay modes, are needed to provide further indications on the quark structure of the previous resonance.
