Tuning charge carrier dynamics through spacer cation functionalization in layered halide perovskites: an ab initio quantum dynamics study

Dion–Jacobson (DJ) phase two-dimensional (2D) hybrid halide perovskites are promising for environmentally stable optoelectronic device applications due to their attractive photophysical properties, including long charge carrier lifetime and partially suppressed non-radiative losses. However, the atomistic details of the structure–property relationship are severely limited, which substantially restricts the strategic materials designed for these layered halide perovskites (LHPs). Here, we combine nonadiabatic molecular dynamics and time-domain density functional theory to understand the effects of spacer cation functionalization on the ground and excited-state charge carrier dynamics in DJ phase LHPs. Our in-depth study reveals that the fluorination of spacer cations considerably restricts the thermal motions of LHPs at ambient conditions. The compact structure weakens the overall electron–phonon interactions and reduces the thermal fluctuations of the band edges in real-time. These dynamic modifications partially mitigate the non-radiative recombination, prolonging the lifetime of photogenerated charge carriers. The suppressed carrier loss mechanism strongly suggests that the fluorinated spacer cation-based LHPs would exhibit enhanced performance as optoelectronic materials. These systematic simulations of excited state carrier dynamics elaborate that chemically viable functionalization of the spacer cations is a robust approach to improve the photophysical properties of 2D halide perovskites strategically. These insights also guide us to propose a few potential strategies to design highly beneficial spacer cations of LHPs that can be introduced in next-generation optoelectronic devices.

Partially polaron-transformed quantum master equation for exciton and charge transport dynamics

Polaron-transformed quantum master equation (PQME) offers a unified framework to describe the dynamics of quantum systems in both limits of weak and strong couplings to environmental degrees of freedom. Thus, the PQME serves as an efficient method to describe charge and exciton transfer/transport dynamics for a broad range of parameters in condensed or complex environments. However, in some cases, the polaron transformation (PT) being employed in the formulation invokes an over-relaxation of slow modes and results in premature suppression of important coherence terms. A formal framework to address this issue is developed in the present work by employing a partial PT that has smaller weights for low frequency bath modes. In this work, it is shown that a closed form expression of a second order time-local PQME including all the inhomogeneous terms can be derived for a general form of partial PT, although more complicated than that for the full PT. All the expressions needed for numerical calculation are derived in detail. Applications to a model of a two-level system coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators, with test calculations focused on those due to homogeneous relaxation terms, demonstrate the feasibility and the utility of the present approach.

The research program developed, validated and applies predictive computational protocols for calculating charge transfer (CT) rates in complex molecular systems, including molecular dyads and triads in liquid solution and solid-state organic semiconducting (OSC) materials. We have established a transformative computational scheme that goes beyond widely used simplifications, to achieve realistic descriptions of CT processes. The approach properly addresses the contribution of molecular environment at ambient conditions to CT processes. Our approach achieves unique insight on investigated CT processes in relevant experimental efforts. Dynamics of charged particles in a Paul radio-frequency quadrupole trap

A molecular-dynamics simulation of hundreds of ions confined in a Paul trap has been performed. The simulation includes the trapped particles' micromotion and interparticle Coulomb interactions. A random walk in velocity was implemented to bring the secular motion to a given temperature which was numerically measured. When the coupling Gamma is large the ions from concentric shells which undergo a quadrupole oscillation at the RF frequency, while the ions within a shell form a 2D hexagonal lattice. Ion clouds at 5 mK show no RF heating for q(z) less than about 0.6, whereas rapid heating is seen for qz = 0.8.

Echo state network for coarsening dynamics of charge density waves

An echo state network (ESN) is a type of reservoir computer that uses a recurrent neural network with a sparsely connected hidden layer. Compared with other recurrent neural networks, one great advantage of ESN is the simplicity of its training process. Yet, despite the seemingly restricted learnable parameters, ESN has been shown to successfully capture the spatial-temporal dynamics of complex patterns. Here we build an ESN to model the coarsening dynamics of charge-density waves (CDWs) in a semiclassical Holstein model, which exhibits a checkerboard electron density modulation at half-filling stabilized by a commensurate lattice distortion. The inputs to the ESN are local CDW order parameters in a finite neighborhood centered around a given site, while the output is the predicted CDW order of the center site at the next time step. Special care is taken in the design of couplings between hidden layer and input nodes to ensure lattice symmetries are properly incorporated into the ESN model. Since the model predictions depend only on CDW configurations of a finite domain, the ESN is scalable and transferrable in the sense that a model trained on dataset from a small system can be directly applied to dynamical simulations on larger lattices. Furthermore, our work opens avenues for efficient dynamical modeling of pattern formations in functional electron materials.

Multiscale dynamics of charging and plating in graphite electrodes coupling operando microscopy and phase-field modelling

The phase separation dynamics in graphitic anodes significantly affects lithium plating propensity, which is the major degradation mechanism that impairs the safety and fast charge capabilities of automotive lithium-ion batteries. In this study, we present comprehensive investigation employing operando high-resolution optical microscopy combined with non-equilibrium thermodynamics implemented in a multi-dimensional (1D+1D to 3D) phase-field modeling framework to reveal the rate-dependent spatial dynamics of phase separation and plating in graphite electrodes. Here we visualize and provide mechanistic understanding of the multistage phase separation, plating, inter/intra-particle lithium exchange and plated lithium back-intercalation phenomena. A strong dependence of intra-particle lithiation heterogeneity on the particle size, shape, orientation, surface condition and C-rate at the particle level is observed, which leads to early onset of plating spatially resolved by a 3D image-based phase-field model. Moreover, we highlight the distinct relaxation processes at different state-of-charges (SOCs), wherein thermodynamically unstable graphite particles undergo a drastic intra-particle lithium redistribution and inter-particle lithium exchange at intermediate SOCs, whereas the electrode equilibrates much slower at low and high SOCs. These physics-based insights into the distinct SOC-dependent relaxation efficiency provide new perspective towards developing advanced fast charge protocols to suppress plating and shorten the constant voltage regime.

The dynamics of charged particles in the near wake of a very negatively charged body - Laboratory experiment and numerical simulation

A numerical simulation that is cylindrical in configuration space and three-dimensional in velocity space has been initiated to test a model for the near-wake dynamics of a very negatively charged body, with reference to the plasma environment around spacecraft. The simulation parameters were closely matched to those of a laboratory experiment so that the results can be compared directly. The laboratory study showed that the electrons and ions can display different temporal features in the filling-in of the wake; and that they can both be found within one body diameter of an object with a highly negative body potential. It was also found that the temperature of the electrons in the very near wake could be somewhat colder than the ambient value, suggesting the possibility of a filtering mechanism being operative there. The simulation results to date largely corroborate the density findings.

Pore-Selective Fullerene Loading in a Porphyrin-Based Metal–Organic Framework Controls Photoinduced Charge-Transfer Dynamics

Building porous donor−acceptor networks based on host−guest interactions in metal organic frameworks (MOFs) provides unique opportunities for tuning charge separation in highly tailorable materials. Here we focus on installing electron-rich porphyrins and electron-deficient fullerene derivatives in the PCN-222 MOF using a solvent assisted ligand insertion (SALI) method. The fullerene is primarily bound in the large pore, where it is subject to distinct dielectric environments through dimethylformamide (DMF) and 1,4-dioxane solvent exchange. Following photoexcitation, sub-picosecond charge transfer involving initial exciplex population is observed, with different charge recombination pathways and lifetimes depending on solvent polarity through modulation of charge-transfer state energies. While the 1,4-dioxane environment yields charge recombination within 1 ns via local fullerene and porphyrin triplet state population, DMF results in charge recombination directly to the ground state on much longer time scales, including some lifetime components in the microsecond range. Fullerene loading influences these kinetics, and the potential for charge delocalization due to fullerene aggregation within the pores is evaluated by using molecular dynamics simulations.

Visualizing Charge Transport and Nanoscale Electrochemistry by Hyperspectral Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy

Charge-transport and electrochemical processes are heavily influenced by the local microstructure. Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) is a widely used technique to map electrochemical potentials at the nanometer scale; however, it offers little information on local charge dynamics. In this study, we implement a hyperspectral KPFM approach for spatially mapping bias-dependent charge dynamics in timescales ranging from the sub-millisecond to the second regime. As a proof of principle, we investigate the role mobile surface charges play in a three-unit-cell LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 oxide heterostructure. We explore machine learning approaches to assist with visualization, pattern recognition, and interpretation of the information-rich data sets. Linear unmixing methods reveal hidden bias-dependent interfacial processes, most likely water splitting, which are essentially unnoticed by functional fitting of the dynamic response alone. Hyperspectral KPFM will be beneficial for investigating nanoscale charge transport and local reactivity in systems involving a possible combination of electronic, ionic, and electrochemical phenomena.

Low-energy quasi-circular electron correlations with charge order wavelength in Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ

Most resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of dynamic charge order correlations in the cuprates have focused on the high-symmetry directions of the copper oxide plane. However, scattering along other in-plane directions should not be ignored as it may help understand, for example, the origin of charge order correlations or the isotropic scattering resulting in strange metal behavior. Our RIXS experiments reveal dynamic charge correlations over the qx-qy scattering plane in underdoped Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ . Tracking the softening of the RIXS-measured bond-stretching phonon, we show that these dynamic correlations exist at energies below approximately 70 meV and are centered around a quasi-circular manifold in the q x -q y scattering plane with radius equal to the magnitude of the charge order wave vector, q CO . This phonon-tracking procedure also allows us to rule out fluctuations of short-range directional charge order (i.e., centered around [q x = ±q CO , q y = 0] and [q x = 0, q y = ±q CO ]) as the origin of the observed correlations.

Magnetic charge propagation upon a 3D artificial spin-ice

Magnetic charge propagation in spin-ice materials has yielded a paradigm-shift in science, allowing the symmetry between electricity and magnetism to be studied. Recent work is now suggesting the spin-ice surface may be important in mediating the ordering and associated phase space in such materials. Here, we detail a 3D artificial spin-ice, which captures the exact geometry of bulk systems, allowing magnetic charge dynamics to be directly visualized upon the surface. Using magnetic force microscopy, we observe vastly different magnetic charge dynamics along two principal directions. For a field applied along the surface termination, local energetics force magnetic charges to nucleate over a larger characteristic distance, reducing their magnetic Coulomb interaction and producing uncorrelated monopoles. In contrast, applying a field transverse to the surface termination yields highly correlated monopole-antimonopole pairs. Detailed simulations suggest it is the difference in effective chemical potential as well as the energy landscape experienced during dynamics that yields the striking differences in monopole transport.

Real-Space Constrained Density Functional Theory Investigation of Site-Specific, Interfacial Charge Recombination Dynamics Across the Au Nanoparticle/TiO 2 Heterojunction

Au nanoparticle (NP)/TiO 2 heterojunction is a representative system to study interfacial charge transfer in photocatalysis and photovoltaics, where suppressing recombination from TiO 2 to Au can enhance hot carrier extraction. We apply real-space constrained density functional theory (CDFT) with Marcus theory to quantify charge recombination time scales across Au/TiO 2 . This approach enables direct control and visualization of charge-separated states, aligning with site-specific probes like time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (trXPS). We find that the charge-separated state features a bipolaron, with recombination dominated by TiO 2 LUMO to Au HOMO transitions, primarily at interfacial Au sites. Marcus rate predictions are benchmarked with surface hopping methods, quantifying differences in time scales and computational efficiency. Lastly, we examine how the Au cluster size affects the free energy change (ΔG) and reorganization energy (λ), explaining trends in closed-shell systems and highlighting challenges for open-shell extrapolations. Overall, CDFT + Marcus theory provides efficient, mechanistically transparent interfacial charge transfer modeling, and we clearly defined its applicability and limitation.

Field-Focused Load-Leveled Dynamic Wireless Charging System for Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles offer much higher well-to-wheel efficiency than gasoline vehicles and can significantly reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil, lower greenhouse gas emissions, improve local air quality, and support continued technological and economic growth. Despite these advantages, widespread adoption remains constrained by limitations in current battery technology, including high cost, limited driving range, and long charging times. One promising approach to address these challenges is to reduce onboard energy storage and instead deliver power wirelessly to vehicles while they are at a traffic stop or in motion.

Colloidal synthesis and charge carrier dynamics of Cs 4 Cd 1-x Cu x Sb 2 Cl 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) layered double perovskite nanocrystals

The toxicity and instability of lead-based metal halide perovskites are the two main obstacles that prevent perovskite materials from implementation in applications. Recently, layered double perovskites (LDPs) emerge as a new family of perovskite materials which provide a new route to solve these problems by lead-component replacement and reduction of crystal structure dimensionality. However, LDP nanocrystals (NCs) have been rarely studied, limiting the further property exploration and application realization. In this work, we report the colloidal synthesis of a series of Cs 4 Cd 1-x Cu x Sb 2 Cl 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) LDP NCs by tuning the stoichiometry of metal precursors. The composition-structure-property relationships of the resulting LDP NCs are studied through materials characterizations, density functional theory calculations, and transient-absorption spectroscopy. In addition, we demonstrate that high-performance high-speed photodetectors can be fabricated using the colloidal LDP NCs through solution-processing. This work premises further expansion of such LDP-based materials for both fundamental studies and application integrations.
