Atomic-scale visualization of topological spin textures in the chiral magnet MnGe

Peeking into magnetic textures Topological spin textures hold promise as robust carriers of information and have been observed in bulk materials with a specific crystal structure. One of these materials, manganese germanide (MnGe), exhibits unusual textures in bulk form. Repicky et al . used spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy to study surface magnetism in thin films of MnGe. Achieving high spatial resolution, the researchers observed stripe-like features consistent with a helical state. In regions where the film was slightly curved due to strain, the intersection of domain walls led to characteristic closed patterns that could be manipulated with current/voltage pulses. —JS

Directed Flow and the Chiral Magnetic Effect in Ultrarelativistic Collisions at the LHC with CMS at the LHC (Final Technical Report)

This Technical Report focuses on two aspects of this project. First, the results from the calibration of the Spectator Reaction Plane Detector (SRPD) addition to the Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC) in the CMS experiment are presented, followed by the pre-liminary results from radiation studies of quartz being performed using the electron linac here at the University of Maryland. The data taken in the November 2018 run are being analyzed with the ultimate goal of producing a reaction plane measurement using spectator neutrons detected in the ZDC. Funds provided by this grant partially supported the graduate student who is performing these calibrations. They were also used to support radiation tests of quartz rod material being performed at the University of Maryland Radiation Facilities Electron Linear Accelerator.

Poynting Robertson Battery and the Chiral Magnetic Fields of AGN Jets

We propose that the magnetic fields in the accretion disks of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are generated by azimuthal electric currents due to the difference between the plasma electron and ion velocities that arises when the electrons are retarded by interactions with the AGN photons (the Poynting Robertson battery). This process provides a unique relation between the polarity of the poloidal B field to the angular velocity Omega of the accretion disk (B is parallel to Omega), a relation absent in the more popular dynamo B-field generation. This then leads to a unique direction for the toroidal B field induced by disk rotation. Observations of the toroidal fields of 29 AGN jets revealed by parsec-scale Faraday rotation measurements show a clear asymmetry that is consistent with this model, with the probability that this asymmetry comes about by chance being approx.0.06 %. This lends support to the hypothesis that the universe is seeded by B fields that are generated in AGNs via this mechanism and subsequently injected into intergalactic space by the jet outflows.

Magnetic Helicity in a Chiral-Polar Magnet Ni 2 InSbO 6

The class of chiral-polar magnets has recently captured significant interest in scientific study due to their intriguing physical phenomena. Among all the chiral-polar magnets, Ni 2 InSbO 6 stands out because of its unique attributes, such as the emergence of the topological chiral soliton lattice in the presence of an external magnetic field perpendicular to the chiral-polar axis. However, the magnetic structure of Ni 2 InSbO 6 at zero field has not been well understood yet. This work presents an analysis including polarized optical microscopy and polarized neutron diffraction on a carefully chosen Ni 2 InSbO 6 crystal. Here, results confirm the predominance of a single chiral-polar domain within the crystal and indicate the likelihood of cycloidal magnetic ordering under zero magnetic field, alongside the observation of net magnetic helicity. The existence of both a dominant chiral-polar domain and a dominant cycloidal magnetic domain within Ni 2 InSbO 6 provides an excellent platform for further exploration of its unconventional physical attributes.

Anomalous Magnetoelectric Coupling in the Paramagnetic State of a Chiral and Polar Magnet

Abstract Chiral magnets are excellent platforms for studying intertwined spin, charge, orbit, and lattice degrees of freedom in solid‐state materials. In this work, the anomalous magnetoelectric behavior in a chiral magnet K 2 Co 2 (SO 4 ) 3 is demonstrated using comprehensive experimental probes. This material adopts a P 2 1 3 chiral cubic structure at room temperature. Based on the results of high‐resolution synchrotron X‐ray diffraction, this study shows that the low‐temperature (<130 K) crystal structure is a P 2 1 monoclinic phase, both polar and chiral. Magnetic and thermodynamic measurements reveal highly frustrated magnetic interactions and possible non‐collinear antiferromagnetic ordering at an extremely low temperature ≈0.6 K. Critically, anomalous magnetoelectric correlations are experimentally detected in its paramagnetic temperature regime, which can arise from the synergetic interplay between magnetoelastic and piezoelectric effects. These findings thus indicate that K 2 Co 2 (SO 4 ) 3 is a unique material, displaying multiple emergent structural and magnetic phenomena. This is attributed to both its overall crystallographic symmetry and the fact that its magnetic ions are located at low‐symmetry sites.

Chirality reversal of magnetic solitons in chiral Cr 1/3 TaS 2

Ferromagnetism in two-dimensional (2D) materials provides an ideal platform to study emergent electromagnetic phenomena in low dimensions for future spintronics. In magnetic-element intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides, topologically nontrivial spin textures, such as chiral helimagnetic spin states and chiral soliton lattices, are realized due to the chiral lattice distortions induced by intercalated magnetic ions. Consequently, the magnetic chirality is predictably determined by the sign of antisymmetric exchange interaction (or Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction, DMI) vector that is coupled to the underlying crystal chirality. Here, using cryogenic Lorentz phase microscopy, we directly observed the chirality reversal behavior of the chiral soliton lattices in Cr 1/3 TaS 2 across the structural defects. We show that a partial 1 T stacking in 2H-TaS 2 locally reduces DMI, leading to magnetic chirality reversal with direct atomic resolution imaging. Furthermore, our experimental results show that manipulation of stacking sequence provides a viable way to control the chirality of topologically nontrivial soliton lattices in 2D magnets.

Field-tunable toroidal moment in a chiral-lattice magnet

Abstract Ferrotoroidal order, which represents a spontaneous arrangement of toroidal moments, has recently been found in a few linear magnetoelectric materials. However, tuning toroidal moments in these materials is challenging. Here, we report switching between ferritoroidal and ferrotoroidal phases by a small magnetic field, in a chiral triangular-lattice magnet BaCoSiO 4 with tri-spin vortices. Upon applying a magnetic field, we observe multi-stair metamagnetic transitions, characterized by equidistant steps in the net magnetic and toroidal moments. This highly unusual ferri-ferroic order appears to come as a result of an unusual hierarchy of frustrated isotropic exchange couplings revealed by first principle calculations, and the antisymmetric exchange interactions driven by the structural chirality. In contrast to the previously known toroidal materials identified via a linear magnetoelectric effect, BaCoSiO 4 is a qualitatively new multiferroic with an unusual coupling between several different orders, and opens up new avenues for realizing easily tunable toroidal orders.

Deconvolution of X-ray natural and magnetic circular dichroism in chiral Dy-ferroborate

Structural chirality and magnetism, when intertwined, can have profound implications on materials properties. Using X-ray imaging and spectroscopic measurements that leverage the natural and magnetic circular dichroic effects present in magnetized chiral crystal structures, we probe the interplay between chirality and magnetism across the field-induced spin-flop transition of Dy ferroborate, DyFe 3 (BO 3 ) 4 . Deconvolution of natural and magnetic circular dichroic signals at the Fe K and Dy L 2,3 absorption edges of the non-centrosymmetric structure was enabled by use of tunable temperature and magnetic field, providing access to element-specific magnetic information across the spin-flop transition. The magnetic response of Fe and Dy sublattices was found to be independent of domain chirality. The chiral domains were robust against both the (chirality preserving) R32 to P3 1 21/P3 2 21 structural phase transition at 280 K, and application of magnetic field up to 4 Tesla. A third flavor of X-ray dichroism, magneto-chiral dichroism, was not detected within the accuracy of our measurements. The absence of significant Fe magnetization along the screw, c-axis for the magnetic field strength used in this study, together with non-linear coupling of magnetic field to electric polarization across the spin-flop transition, may hinder observation of magneto-chiral dichroic effects in this system.

Exploring self-consistency of the equations of axion electrodynamics in Weyl semimetals

Recent works have provided evidence that an axial anomaly can arise in Weyl semimetals. If this is the case, then the electromagnetic response of Weyl semimetals should be governed by the equations of axion electrodynamics. These equations capture both the chiral magnetic and anomalous Hall effects in the limit of linear response, while at higher orders their solutions can provide detectable electromagnetic signatures of the anomaly. In this work, we consider three versions of axion electrodynamics that have been proposed in the Weyl semimetal literature. These versions differ in the form of the chiral magnetic term and in whether or not the axion is treated as a dynamical field. In each case, we look for solutions to these equations for simple sample geometries subject to applied external fields. We find that in the case of a linear chiral magnetic term generated by a nondynamical axion, self-consistent solutions can generally be obtained. In this case, the magnetic field inside of the Weyl semimetal can be magnified significantly, providing a testable signature for experiments. Self-consistent solutions can also be obtained for dynamical axions, but only in cases where the chiral magnetic term vanishes identically. Finally, for a nonlinear form of the chiral magnetic term frequently considered in the literature, we find that there are no self-consistent solutions aside from a few special cases.

Spin-Selective Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Chiral Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: Synergistic Impact of Inherent Magnetic Moment and Chirality

Electron spin polarization is identified as a promising avenue for enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is the bottleneck that limits the energy efficiency of water-splitting. Here, in this work, we report that both ferrimagnetic (f-Fe 3 O 4 ) and superparamagnetic iron oxide (s-Fe 3 O 4 ) catalysts can exhibit external magnetic field (Hext)-induced OER enhancement, and the activity is proportional to their intrinsic magnetic moment. Additionally, the chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect was utilized in synergy with Hext to get a maximum enhancement of up to 89% improvement in current density (at 1.8 V vs RHE) with a low onset potential of 270 mV in s-Fe 3 O 4 catalysts. Spin polarization and the resultant spin selectivity suppress the production of H 2 O 2 and promote the formation of ground state triplet O 2 during the OER. Furthermore, the design of chiral s-Fe 3 O 4 with synergistic spin potential effect demonstrates a high spin polarization of ∼42%, as measured using conductive atomic force microscopy (c-AFM).
