Tunable magnetic excitations in the honeycomb antiferromagnet (Co,Ni)⁢TiO3

The solid solution of the honeycomb antiferromagnet (AFM) Co0.5⁢Ni0.5⁢TiO3 (CNTO) was synthesized by mixing a 1:1 molar ratio of CoTiO3 (CTO) and NiTiO3 (NTO). Powder neutron scattering was used to determine the structure and magnetic spectrum, where the nuclear and magnetic structures resemble those of the end members. The Néel temperature (T𝑁 = 27 ± 1 K), the ordered magnetic moment (M = 2.29 ± 0.03 𝜇𝐵 per magnetic ion), and lattice parameters are intermediate between those of the two. From inelastic neutron scattering, it is observed that the magnon density of states (MDOS) extends up to 13 meV, and the interaction can be described by an XXZ-type magnetic Hamiltonian. Above 15 meV, spin-orbit excitons (SOEs) are observed similarly to those in CTO, but with modified spin-orbit crystal-field splitting because of the substitution of Ni at Co sites, and the disorder induced by the Ni substitution modifies the spin-orbit crystal field. Thus, the magnetic dynamics of the CNTO cannot be described as a simple average of the two parent compounds.

Cooperative and bifunctional Ga-Ca-Cr 2 O 3 @CaO structured monoliths as versatile platform for reactive capture of CO 2 and its subsequent conversion to ethylene

Cooperative and bifunctional materials (BFMs) that integrate adsorbents and catalysts offer a promising strategy for the reactive capture of CO 2 to produce valuable fuels and chemicals. In this study, we developed structured BFMs via 3D printing that combine CaO as an adsorbent with Ga–Ca–Cr 2 O 3 metal oxides as the catalyst for the reactive capture of CO 2 and its subsequent conversion to C 2 H 4 via the oxidative dehydrogenation of C 2 H 6 (CO 2 -ODHE). Three different Ga–Ca compositions were used to modify the catalyst surface characteristics and enhance C 2 H 4 selectivity. In these formulations, Ga ions stabilize the oxygen lattice of the BFM, while Ca ions interact strongly with Cr to form CaCrO 4 , thereby altering the oxygen species and enhancing the material’s basic properties. Under adsorption–reaction conditions at 600–650 °C, the optimal BFM achieved an excellent C 2 H 4 selectivity of 96.4 %, attributed to a balanced redox process and improved basicity that facilitate efficient C 2 H 6 conversion and rapid desorption of C 2 H 4 without excessive oxidation. Overall, this work provides new insights into the formulation of BFMs monoliths and highlights the critical role of catalytic surface modification in enhancing C 2 H 4 selectivity in the CO 2 -ODHE reactive capture process.

Effect of Fe on Co-Based SiO2Al2O3 Mixed Support Catalyst for Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis in 3D-Printed SS Microchannel Microreactor

This research explores the effect of a composite support of SiO2 and Al2O3 with Fe and Co incorporated as catalysts for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) using a 3D-printed stainless steel (SS) microchannel microreactor. Two mesoporous catalysts, FeCo/SiO2Al2O3 and Co/SiO2Al2O3, were synthesized via a one-pot (OP) method and extensively characterized using N2 physisorption, XRD, SEM, TEM, H2-TPR, TGA-DSC, FTIR, and XPS. H2-TPR results revealed that the synthesis method significantly affected the reducibility of metal oxides, thereby influencing the formation of active FTS sites. SEM-EDS and TEM further revealed a well-defined hexagonal matrix with a porous surface morphology and uniform metal ion distribution. FTS reactions, carried out in the 200–350 °C temperature range at 20 bar with a H2/CO molar ratio of 2:1, exhibited the highest activity for FeCo/SiO2Al2O3, with up to 80% CO conversion. Long-term stability was evaluated by monitoring the catalyst performance for 30 h on stream at 320 °C under identical reaction conditions. The catalyst was initially active for the methanation reaction for up to 15 h, after which the selectivity for CH4 declined. Correspondingly, the C4+ selectivity increased after 15 h of time-on-stream, indicating a shift in the product distribution toward longer-chain hydrocarbons. This trend suggests that the catalyst undergoes gradual activation or restructuring under reaction conditions, which enhances chain growth over time. The increase in C4+ products may be attributed to the stabilization of the active sites and suppression of methane or light hydrocarbon formation.

Valorization of consolidated bioprocessing residues for bioplastics

This study demonstrates an organic solvent-free processing strategy to valorize consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) residues, from switchgrass and poplar biomass, into functional poly(butylene succinate) (PBS)-based biocomposites using high-shear homogenization (HSH). HSH transformed the switchgrass and poplar CBP residues (CBP-R) into fine, uniformly distributed particles and microfibers. The composites of PBS with homogenized switchgrass residues (H-CBP-R-SG) or homogenized poplar residues (H-CBP-R-P) at a 70/30 weight ratio exhibited improved processability and mechanical integrity, with the Young's modulus for the PBS/H-CBP-R-SG and PBS/H-CBP-R-P nearly doubling to 0.66 ± 0.07 GPa and 0.65 ± 0.04 GPa, respectively, compared to neat PBS (0.36 ± 0.02 GPa). Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) reveals a significant suppression of the tan δ peak magnitude, indicating that HSH-mediated physical activation facilitates stress transfer in composites typical of covalent chemical grafting systems. While the transition to a stiffness-dominated profile reduces ductility, the resulting composites exhibit the dimensional stability and resistance to thermal warping required for high-fidelity FDM 3D printing and injection molding. Beyond material performance, comprehensive techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) confirmed that diverting CBP residues into composite products can improve the economic viability of the biorefinery without substantially increasing biorefinery global warming potential (GWP). At a 30 wt% blend ratio, incorporating residuals into PBS yielded a minimum selling price for the composite of $\$4.07$ per kg compared to the conventional bioplastic price of $\$5.00$ per kg. This approach aligns with circular bioeconomy principles by converting waste streams into value-added products. Furthermore, this innovative strategy addresses key challenges in bioplastic development, including cost, compatibility, and performance, while simultaneously advancing waste minimization strategies for sustainable manufacturing systems.

Heliostat sizing methodology for concentrating solar thermal industrial process heat projects

This study presents a method to obtain a heliostat size that minimizes the levelized cost of heat (LCOH) of a heliostat-based concentrating solar thermal system for applications of solar heating for industrial processes at operating temperatures from 565 to 1550°C. The method extends prior work by embedding a routine for system design that obtains near-optimal subsystem sizes, increasing the fidelity of drive cost functions, and adding an optical performance model to supplement the previously developed cost models, which we update to reflect current pricing trends. An illustrative business case is developed for Daggett, California, targeting specified annual thermal energy outputs of 50 to 400 GWh th . Optical performance is modeled using verified estimates from the literature. A surrogate heliostat cost model, derived from commercial heliostat designs and scaled for production volume, installation, and operations and maintenance costs, is used to develop cost functions. Results show that heliostat size strongly affects the LCOH, producing a characteristic U-shaped trend with a robust near-optimal window of 7-20 m 2 ; the heliostat size producing the lowest project cost in our study grows slightly as the project size increases, and is reduced as the operating temperature increases. The findings in this study are consistent with the general trend of smaller heliostats being deployed at existing projects for high-temperature industrial process heat and reflect the significant reduction in power electronics and other per-heliostat costs. The methodology we propose is general and can be tailored to revised cost curves as the technology continues to evolve.

Achieving uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in Ce2⁢Fe17⁢N3 through Co- and Sm-substitution

Th2⁢Zn17−type structure-based permanent magnets, such as Sm2⁢Fe17⁢N3, offer strong potential as alternatives to neodymium magnets (NdFeB), but their practical use is limited by phase stability and the scarcity of Sm. Ce-based counterparts, particularly Ce2⁢Fe17⁢N3, are attractive low-cost candidates, yet their intrinsic planar magnetic anisotropy restricts permanent-magnet performance. Here, we induce uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in Ce2⁢Fe17⁢N3 through two approaches: (i) Co substitution on the Fe sublattice and (ii) partial substitution of Ce with Sm. Combined density functional theory and experimental results show that both strategies modify the 3⁢𝑑–4⁢𝑓 interactions and band filling, yielding magnetization values up to ∼1.2T and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energies exceeding 1MJ/m3 for Co-alloyed compositions, with significantly larger anisotropy achieved upon Sm substitution. In addition, the Sm-substituted Ce2⁢Fe17⁢N3 samples exhibit enhanced high-temperature stability compared to Sm2⁢Fe17⁢N3. These findings demonstrate that Ce2⁢Fe17⁢N3-based alloys can deliver magnetic performance suitable for permanent-magnet applications while reducing cost and reliance on critical rare-earth elements, and they provide practical design guidelines for rare-earth-lean magnets for energy and industrial applications.

Computational discovery of a tetragonal MBene phase: diamond-shaped boron lattices, viable MAB precursors, and selective CO 2 reduction

MBenes are a class of two-dimensional transition-metal borides derived from layered MAB phases. Here, we use first-principles calculations to predict a new tetragonal MB (1 : 1) MBene phase featuring a diamond-shaped B–B lattice and systematically assess its phase stability, synthetic accessibility, and catalytic performance towards the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). Four tetragonal configurations are benchmarked against known hexagonal and orthorhombic phases, and a multi-tier screening identifies six robust members (CrB, FeB, MoB, WB, IrB, and PtB). Exploration of the I4/mmm MAB space reveals 11 viable precursors, including the experimentally synthesized Ir 2 ZnB 2 , which validates our screening approach. CO 2 RR free-energy diagrams show that CrB favors CH 3 OH while FeB, MoB, WB, IrB, and PtB preferentially yield HCOOH. The corresponding limiting potentials are competitive with, and in some cases superior to, those reported for state-of-the-art orthorhombic and hexagonal MBenes. These findings expand the MBene landscape by establishing a tetragonal phase with structural, synthetic, and catalytic promise.

Exceedance Probabilities and Recurrence Intervals for Extended Power Outages in the United States

This report provides estimates of recurrence intervals and conditional exceedance probabilities for major power outages by U.S. region between 2015 and 2021. Additionally, we provide estimates for grid management, particularly outages caused by California’s public safety power shutoffs (PSPS), and for natural outages caused by major hurricanes. Outage recurrence intervals are the average number of years between outage events, and conditional exceedance probabilities are the likelihoods that a customer who experiences a major power outage will experience an outage exceeding a given duration. Major outage events are those that affect 10,000 or more customers, as defined by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Electric Emergency Incident and Disturbance Report, called OE-417 (DOE 2020). These results can be applied to determine the likelihood of experiencing long-duration outages, which can be integrated into cost-benefit analyses of resilience solutions and broader energy resilience studies.

Fast lithium ion diffusion in brownmillerite Li x Sr 2 Co 2 O 5

Transition metal oxides not only exhibits novel magnetic properties but also provides outstanding ionic transports. Ionic conductors have great potential for interesting tunable physical properties via ionic liquid gating and novel energy storage applications such as all-solid-state lithium batteries. In particular, low migration barriers and high hopping attempt frequency are the keys to achieve fast ion diffusion in solids. Taking advantage of the oxygen-vacancy channel in Li x Sr 2 Co 2 O 5 , we show that migration barriers of lithium ion are as small as 0.28–0.17 eV depending on the lithium concentration rates. Our first-principles calculation also investigated hopping attempt frequency and concluded the room temperature ionic diffusivity and ion conductivity are high as 10 −7 –10 −6 cm 2 s −1 and 10 −3 –10 −2 Scm −1 , respectively, which outperform most of perovskite-type, garnet-type, and sulfide Li-ion solid-state electrolytes. This work proves Li x Sr 2 Co 2 O 5 as a promising super-ionic conductor.

Modeling phase transformations in Mn-rich disordered rocksalt cathodes with machine-learning interatomic potentials

Mn-rich disordered rocksalt (DRX) cathode materials exhibit a phase transformation from a disordered to a partially disordered spinel-like structure (δ-phase) during electrochemical cycling. Here, in this computational study, we use charge-informed molecular dynamics with a fine-tuned CHGNet foundation potential to investigate the phase transformation in LixMn 0.8 Ti 0.1 O 1.9 F 0.1 . Our results indicate that transition metal migration occurs and reorders to form the spinel-like ordering in an FCC anion framework. The transformed structure contains a higher concentration of nontransition metal (0-TM) face-sharing channels, which are known to improve Li transport kinetics. Analysis of the Mn valence distribution suggests that the appearance of tetrahedral Mn 2+ is a consequence of spinel-like ordering, rather than the trigger for cation migration as previously suggested. Calculated equilibrium intercalation voltage profiles demonstrate that the δ-phase, unlike the ordered spinel, exhibits solid-solution signatures at low voltage. A higher Li capacity is obtained than in the DRX phase. This study provides atomic insights into solid-state phase transformation and its relation to experimental electrochemistry, highlighting the potential of machine-learning interatomic potentials for understanding complex oxide materials.

Development and Validation of Low-Cost, High-Reflectance Composite CSP Facets: SIPS Final Report

This work investigates the various challenges associated with developing heliostat structural composite facets using 1 mm glass mirrors. Such facets are desirable for Concentrating Solar Power because 1 mm glass mirrors provide an absolute increase in reflectivity of 2-3 % over the industry standard of 4 mm glass mirrors. Prototypes of paraboloid composite facets with 1 mm glass mirrors were constructed that have a root mean square slope error on the order of 2 mrad while achieving greater than 96% reflectivity. These facets were constructed using a low-quality aluminum mold and a bill of materials that show potential to achieve cost parity with existing 4 mm glass mirrors supported by structural steel. The facets produced were able to survive up to 50 mm hail ball impacts and were robust against accelerated environmental cycling designed to expose durability concerns. Further work is needed to develop a scalable and cost-effective manufacturing process with a similar bill of materials.

Impact of anion-exchange membrane degradation on long-term CO 2 electrolysis to ethylene

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction (eCO2R) to ethylene offers a unique opportunity to diversify domestic supply chains for chemical manufacturing. Large-scale deployment of eCO2R to ethylene reactors is currently limited by low energy efficiencies and poor durability. Herein, we demonstrate >100 h of continuous electrolysis at an industrially relevant current density of 200 mA cm −2 in a 25 cm 2 geometric area zero-gap reactor with a full-cell voltage <3.1 V and ethylene Faradaic efficiency >30%. Incorporating expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-supported electrodes into zero-gap reactors allows for durable electrode catalysts that are resistant to flooding, and this enables wider ranges of operating parameters not typically accessible in CO 2 electrolysis. Finally, we identify membrane degradation, evidenced by a loss of membrane ion-exchange capacity, as the leading cause of performance loss over 144 h of electrolysis.

H 2 O and CO 2 Sorption in Ion-Exchange Sorbents: Distinct Interactions in Amine Versus Quaternary Ammonium Materials

This article examines how water (H₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) interact with two classes of ion-exchange sorbents — a primary amine sorbent and a quaternary ammonium (QA⁺) sorbent — using calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, gas analysis, and molecular modeling. Here, the QA⁺ sorbent exhibits stronger binding to both H₂O and CO₂ but also shows thermal stability limitations. Mixed-gas experiments reveal that humidity strongly influences CO₂ uptake and that moisture-driven sorbent regeneration enables cyclic moisture swing CO₂ capture, with implications for low-energy CO₂ separation from dilute gas streams.
