Collisional-rate coefficients for sodiumlike Ar VIII ions.

Determination of collisional-excitation-rate coefficients for sodium-like Ar VIII ions theoretically using the Coulomb-Born approximation as well as experimentally from the absolute intensities of lines emitted by these ions in well-diagnosed plasmas whose parameters were obtained from the analysis of scattered laser light. These plasmas were produced in a theta-pinch device. The agreement between theory and experiment is within the estimated accuracy of plus or minus 50% for excitation from the ground state to the n = 3 and n = 4 levels, whereas some deviations are observed for two transitions to the n = 5 levels at lower temperatures. A rate coefficient for ionization was obtained from the time dependence of the ionization.

Collisional excitation of carbon monoxide in interstellar clouds.

Investigation of different models for the collisional excitation of carbon monoxide (CO) by solving the rate equations for the ten lowest energy levels, including stimulated emission and absorption by 3 K isotropic radiation, spontaneous emission, and collisions. The results are qualitatively applicable to other linear molecules. They show that a wide range of rotational excitation temperatures, including population inversions, can be produced by the various kinetic temperatures and particle densities which are likely to occur in the interstellar regions containing molecules.

Current distribution on an infinite tubular antenna immersed in a cold collisional magnetoplasma.

Based upon a boundary-value formulation, a new approximate expression is derived for the total axial current on an infinite antenna immersed in an unbounded, cold, collisional magnetoplasma with a dc magnetic field oriented parallel to the antenna. Numerical results are presented for the current distributions over plasma parameters corresponding to each of the eight regions of the Clemmow-Mullaly-Allis diagram and for different values of the collision frequency.

Proton collisional excitation in the ground configuration of Fe/+12/.

Using semiclassical Coulomb excitation theory, proton collisional excitation and deexcitation cross sections are calculated for all transitions between the Fe(+12) ground configuration levels. Rate constants pertaining to these processes are then derived for coronal temperatures. These rates are shown to be comparable in all cases to the corresponding electron rate constants.

The electromagnetic interchange mode in a partially ionized collisional plasma

A collisional electromagnetic dispersion relation is derived from two-fluid theory for the interchange mode coupled to the Alfven, acoustic, drift and entropy modes in a partially ionized plasma. The fundamental electromagnetic nature of the interchange model is noted; coupling to the intermediate Alfven mode is strongly stabilizing for finite k sub z. Both ion viscous and ion-neutral stabilization are included, and it was found that collisions destroy the ion finite Larmor radius cutoff at short perpendicular wavelengths.

The electromagnetic interchange mode in a partly-ionized collisional plasma

A collisional electromagnetic dispersion relation is derived from two-fluid theory for the interchange mode coupled to the Alfven, acoustic, drift, and entropy modes in a partially ionized plasma. The fundamental electromagnetic nature of the interchange mode is noted: coupling to the intermediate Alfven mode is strongly stabilizing for finite perturbations of the magnetic field. Both ion-viscous and ion-neutral stabilization are included; and it is found that collisions destroy the FLR (finite Larmor radius) cutoff at short perpendicular wavelengths.
