Preliminary evaluation of the effect of a dynamic preferential runway system upon community noise disturbance

A dynamic preferential runway system (DPRS) was developed for John F. Kennedy International Airport for the purpose of controlling short term noise exposure in the neighboring communities. The DPRS is a computer-aided procedure for optimum selection of runways from the standpoint of noise and is based upon a community disturbance model which takes into account flyover levels, size of exposed populations, time of day and week, and persistence of overflights. A preliminary evaluation of the DPRS is presented on the basis of social survey data and telephone complaint records, for the trial period of August and September, 1971. Comparative use is made of data taken in a previous survey of the same community areas in 1969.

Utilization of a CRT display light pen in the design of feedback control systems

A hierarchical structure of the interlinked programs was developed to provide a flexible computer-aided design tool. A graphical input technique and a data structure are considered which provide the capability of entering the control system model description into the computer in block diagram form. An information storage and retrieval system was developed to keep track of the system description, and analysis and simulation results, and to provide them to the correct routines for further manipulation or display. Error analysis and diagnostic capabilities are discussed, and a technique was developed to reduce a transfer function to a set of nested integrals suitable for digital simulation. A general, automated block diagram reduction procedure was set up to prepare the system description for the analysis routines.

A comparison of the capabilities of three finite element programs

Three finite element programs are compared to assess their capabilities as an analysis tool in a structural design process. Because of the need for repetitive analyses as an integral part of a design loop, a candidate program must be capable of handling large problems, operate efficiently, and be readily adaptable for use in computer-aided design. The three programs considered in the study, ELAS,SNAP, and NASTRAN, range from a relatively small finite element program limited to static structural analysis (ELAS) to a large complex general analysis system (NASTRAN). Results are given for comparative speeds and computer resources required for each program in the analysis of sample fuselage problems representative of practical aircraft design.

Design synthesis of a boron/epoxy reinforced metal shear web.

An advanced composite shear web design concept has been developed for the Space Shuttle Orbiter main engine thrust beam structure. Various web concepts were synthesized by a computer-aided adaptive random search procedure. A practical concept is identified having a titanium-clad, boron/epoxy plate with vertical boron/epoxy reinforced stiffeners. Baseline composite and titanium shear resistant designs are compared; the composite concept is 28% lighter than the titanium web. Element test results show the metal cladding effectively reinforces critical composite load transfer and fastener hole areas making the composite web concept practical for other shear structure applications.-

Digital filter realizations using a special-purpose stored-program computer.

A special-purpose computer is organized to realize a second-order digital filter in a choice of 11 programming forms. Instructions for the forms are stored in a fast-access READ-ONLY memory. Also, a hard-wired multiplier is employed in the Arithmetic Unit to decrease computation time. The multiplier is organized into uniform functional blocks that are suitable for large-scale integration (LSI). A computer-aided design (CAD) program may be used to select the best filter programming form for a given filter transfer function D(z). The CAD program also aids in the location of the binary point in the data registers of the computer.

Evaluation of a metal shear web selectively reinforced with filamentary composites for space shuttle application. Phase 1 summary report: Shear web design development

An advanced composite shear web design concept was developed for the Space Shuttle orbiter main engine thrust beam structure. Various web concepts were synthesized by a computer-aided adaptive random search procedure. A practical concept is identified having a titanium-clad + or - 45 deg boron/epoxy web plate with vertical boron/epoxy reinforced aluminum stiffeners. The boron-epoxy laminate contributes to the strength and stiffness efficiency of the basic web section. The titanium-cladding functions to protect the polymeric laminate parts from damaging environments and is chem-milled to provide reinforcement in selected areas. Detailed design drawings are presented for both boron/epoxy reinforced and all-metal shear webs. The weight saving offered is 24% relative to all-metal construction at an attractive cost per pound of weight saved, based on the detailed designs. Small scale element tests substantiate the boron/epoxy reinforced design details in critical areas. The results show that the titanium-cladding reliably reinforces the web laminate in critical edge load transfer and stiffener fastener hole areas.

SYSTID - A flexible tool for the analysis of communication systems.

Description of the System Time Domain Simulation (SYSTID) computer-aided analysis program which is specifically structured for communication systems analysis. The SYSTID program is user oriented so that very little knowledge of computer techniques and very little programming ability are required for proper application. The program is designed so that the user can go from a system block diagram to an accurate simulation by simply programming a single English language statement for each block in the system. The mathematical and functional models available in the SYSTID library are presented. An example problem is given which illustrates the ease of modeling communication systems. Examples of the outputs available are presented, and proposed improvements are summarized.

Nonlinear programming in design of control systems with specified handling qualities.

A method is described for using nonlinear programing in the computer-aided design of aircraft control systems. It is assumed that the quality of such systems depends on many criteria. These criteria are included in the constraints vector, and the design proceeds through a sequence of nonlinear programing solutions in which the designer varies the specification of sets of requirements levels. The method is applied to design of a lateral stability augmentation system (SAS) for a fighter aircraft, in which the requirements vector is chosen from the official handling-qualities specifications. Results are shown for several simple SAS configurations designed to obtain desirable handling qualities over all design flight conditions with minimum feedback gains.

Beam-water Interaction System for PFAS Treatment

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants that resist conventional water treatment due to the strength of their carbon fluorine bonds. Electron-beam irradiation has shown potential for PFAS degradation; however, its effectiveness is limited by shallow energy penetration, restricting treatment to the upper region of the water surface. This project addresses this limitation through the design of a compact mixing chamber and recirculation system to enhance surface renewal and improve treatment efficiency. The system, constrained to approximately 10 cm 20 cm 20 cm, was developed using computer-aided design, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and MATLAB-based hydraulic analysis to evaluate flow behavior, head loss, and pump compatibility. A perforated-baffle geometry and controlled flow range of 1 3 GPM were implemented to promote uniform mixing while maintaining a stable free surface for electron-beam exposure. Modeling results indicate improved flow distribution and reduced dead zones, supporting more consistent interaction between contaminated water and the beam. The final design enhances hydrodynamic performance within system constraints, contributing to scalable electron-beam water treatment technologies for improved PFAS degradation.

Test cavity and Iris-to-Coax transition for tuning and high-power verification of SNS DTL iris couplers

The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Drift Tube Linac (DTL) employs iris couplers to efficiently deliver RF power into the accelerating structure. To support the development, tuning, and high‑power conditioning of these couplers prior to installation in the actual DTLs, a dedicated test cavity and an iris‑to‑coaxial transition structure have been designed. This work presents the electromagnetic design, simulation, and optimization of the test setup, enabling precise characterization of the iris coupler’s performance. The transition structure allows for tuning of the iris opening dimensions without requiring a waveguide taper or full‑size waveguide transitions, while maintaining impedance matching between the coaxial feed and the iris geometry to minimize reflection and power loss. During low‑power tests, the iris opening di-mensions can be evaluated using the iris‑to‑coax transi-tion attached to the test cavity. For high‑power condi-tioning, full‑size waveguides with ceramic vacuum win-dows are connected to the test cavity to replicate opera-tional conditions. Key design parameters were optimized using computer-aided simulation, and sensitivity studies were conducted to assess the impact of mechanical toler-ances on RF performance. The resulting test platform provides a reliable and efficient means for tuning and validating iris couplers, contributing to improved opera-tional stability in the SNS DTL.

Design and Characterization of the 162.5 MHz RF Component Layout for Fermilab's PIP-II Reference Line

The Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) Reference Line at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory distributes phase-stable radio-frequency (RF) signals throughout the accelerator. PIP-II requires stable timing and phase reference signals so its accelerating cavities transfer energy to the particle beam at the correct point in each RF cycle. The full system includes 162.5, 325, and 650 MHz sections corresponding to the frequency sections of the PIP-II Linac, with this project focusing on the 162.5 MHz section. The Reference Line must provide a phase stable source signal while responding to phase changes caused by environmental conditions or system drift. Its RF components will be mounted on aluminum heat plates inside a temperature controlled enclosure to further limit temperature-driven phase changes. To prepare the system for manufacture, the project reviewed component functions and dimensions, developed a computer-aided design (CAD) model, and arranged the hardware to support short cable paths, grounding, fastener access, and maintenance. Several full scale, three dimensional printed prototypes allowed the available components to be mounted and inspected. These fit checks revealed mechanical conflicts and guided revisions to component placement, countersink geometry, labeling, and plate thickness. Electrical characterization was also performed on selected RF hardware to compare its measured behavior with the performance metrics that were set for our design. Overall, the project produced a manufacturable 162.5 MHz layout, physical fit-check prototypes, and documented electrical measurements that support review before metal fabrication. The 325 and 650 MHz layouts remain future work because they require additional minor mechanical changes.
