A Novel Ku-Band/Ka-Band and Ka-Band/E-Band Multimode Waveguide Couplers for Power Measurement of Traveling-Wave Tube Amplifier Harmonic Frequencies

This paper presents the design, fabrication and test results for a novel waveguide multimode directional coupler (MDC). The coupler, fabricated from two dissimilar frequency band waveguides, is capable of isolating power at the second harmonic frequency from the fundamental power at the output port of a traveling-wave tube (TWT) amplifier. Test results from proof-of-concept demonstrations are presented for a Ku-band/Ka-band MDC and a Ka-band/E-band MDC. In addition to power measurements at harmonic frequencies, a potential application of the MDC is in the design of a satellite borne beacon source for atmospheric propagation studies at millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequencies (Ka-band and E-band).

HIGH POWER COUPLER DEVELOPMENT FOR EIC

The synchrotron radiation loss in EIC Electron Storage Ring is as high as up to 10 MW. This energy loss will be compensated by 17 2K 591 MHz single-cell SRF cavities with a combined total of 34 high power fundamental power couplers. Each power coupler will operate 92% of revolution time CW and ~8% of revolution time with 400 kW forward power due to the beam abort gap. To satisfy the EIC needs, we developed two 500 kW standing-wave FPC designs at BNL based on either a BeO and an Al2O3 RF window. This paper will briefly summarize test results of the BeO window FPC, and describe the design development of the Al2O3 window based FPC.

Cold Test Results of Pre-Production PIP-II SSR2 Cavities with High-Power Couplers in the Fermilab Spoke Test Cryostat

As part of the PIP-II project at Fermilab, a pre-production cryomodule featuring 325 MHz Single Spoke Resonator type 2 (SSR2) superconducting RF cavities is under construction. These SSR2 cavities are fabricated by industry partners and undergo initial cold testing at our collaborating institution, IJCLab in France, utilizing low-power coupler. Subsequently, the cavities are subjected to final qualification at Fermilab, complete with tuner and high-power coupler assemblies. This paper provides an overview of the ongoing efforts dedicated to high-power testing of jacketed SSR2 cavities in the Spoke Test Cryostat (STC) at Fermilab. Performance parameters obtained from these tests are presented, offering valuable insights into the cavities operational characteristics and readiness for integration into the PIP-II cryomodule.

Vibration of a cryomodule’s coupler during road transportation: Multibody analysis and experimental validation

The road transportation of critical components for cryogenic cryomodules is a challenging task. Indeed, the shipping and the handling of fundamental sub-assemblies can expose these components to harmful dynamic loads that can jeopardize their structural integrity. This article has the purpose of developing a finite element multibody model capable of assessing the acceleration on a test coupler for a cavity of the Single Spoke Resonator 1 subjected to a typical road transportation trip. A multibody model consisting of rigid bodies and finite element–imported flexible bodies has been created allowing a comparison of the simulated and experimental acceleration. Afterwards, an experimental on-road test, whose set-up is described in this article, has been carried out at Fermilab with instrumented components. Being able to effectively simulate and validate the dynamic effects on such sub-assemblies makes it possible, for the future, to simulate more complex structures subject to dynamic loadings, such as the entire cryomodules during shipping. Furthermore, the results from the simulations can be used to guide the design of new suspension systems suitable for the reduction mitigation of structural vibration during the road transportation of cryomodules.

Linear Quantum Coupler for Clean Bosonic Control

Quantum computing with superconducting circuits relies on high-fidelity driven nonlinear processes. An ideal quantum nonlinearity would selectively activate desired coherent processes at high strength, without activating parasitic mixing products or introducing additional decoherence. The wide bandwidth of the Josephson nonlinearity makes this difficult, with undesired drive-induced transitions and decoherence limiting qubit readout, gates, couplers, and amplifiers. Significant strides have recently been made into building better “quantum mixers,” with promise being shown by Kerr-free three-wave mixers that suppress driven frequency shifts, and balanced quantum mixers that explicitly forbid a significant fraction of parasitic processes. We propose a novel mixer that combines both these strengths, with engineered selection rules that make it essentially linear (not just Kerr-free) when idle, and activate clean parametric processes even when driven at high strength. Furthermore, its ideal Hamiltonian is simple to analyze analytically, and we show that this ideal behavior is first-order insensitive to dominant experimental imperfections. We expect this mixer to allow significant advances in high-𝑄 control, readout, and amplification.

High-Power Polyphase PCB-Type Inductive Coupler for Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging

The cost and manufacturing difficulty of traditionally wound coils for wireless charging of electric vehicles has led to the exploration of alternative manufacturing for scalable deployment at a range of rated powers. A rotating-field polyphase wireless coupler is developed with balanced fully pitched coils which are not possible with conventional Litz wire. The usage of printed circuit board (PCB) technology is proposed for the innovative construction at large dimensions due to reduced cost, increased ease of manufacturability, and potential geometric customization compared to would coils. Design considerations specific to PCBs are detailed for wireless power transfer coils including advantages such as the potential for many turns and transposition with planar interconnections. A design procedure is developed which may be used to investigate the frequency to power to dimension correlation and limits associated with PCB coils. Designs are simulated in 3D electromagnetic finite element analysis (FEA) for the polyphase coil to evaluate the coupling between coils with varying geometric parameters at 100mm and 500mm outer diameters. A discussion is included on methods to increase PCB power ratings through a mixture of layer stacking, connections, and material selection.

Three and Two Phase Rotating Field Inductive Couplers for Wireless Power Transfer with One Phase per Layer Windings

Multiphase inductive wireless charging coils have been proposed recently to improve coupler surface power density, reduce component stress and size, and provide near-constant power delivery to charge mobile electric systems. Several aspects for the fundamental characterization of multiphase coils are explored up to six phases including approximate mutual inductance with size and turn variation, induced voltage, and output power estimation. The relative component stress and size of passive components for resonant operation are compared between the multiphase variants. A combination of an experimentally validated 3D electromagnetic finite element analysis (FEA) and power electronic co-simulations are used to validate the estimated quantities approximated with a mixture of analytical equations and an artificial neural network model for mutual inductance. A novel three-phase transmitter, two-phase receiver coil pair is also proposed for electric vehicle charging to reduce the number of connections and compensation complexity on the vehicle-side with improved power output compared to a two-phase configuration.

Low-loss adiabatic fiber-optic coupler for cryogenic photonics

Recent developments in quantum light–matter coupled systems and quantum transducers have highlighted the need for cryogenic optical measurements. In this study, we present a packaged fiber-optic coupler with a coupling efficiency of over 50% for telecom wavelength light down to the mK temperature range. Besides the high coupling efficiency, our method enables sensitive photonic device measurements that are immune to mechanical vibrations present in cryogenic setups.

Successful cleanroom installation of PIP-II SSR2 coupler using robotic arm

To minimize the contamination of SRF cavities, remote installation techniques are needed during the installation of components. Recent work at Fermilab has been performed to begin the process of developing techniques for assembling cavities using robotics. Multiple alignment methods were prototyped including alignment and computer vision methods. Using a remotely controlled robotic arm, the alignment and installation of couplers have been successfully performed on prototype PIP-II SSR2 cavities in a cleanroom. The installation process will be shown to show to demonstrate the potential of future installations on other cavities and cavity ancillaries.

Copper plating qualification process for the fundamental power coupler waveguides for CEBAF cryomodules

To provide sufficient energy for CEBAF operation, cryomodules and components are being refurbished yearly as necessary. Copper plated fundamental power coupler waveguides are important components of the cryomodules. The integrity and quality of copper plating is critical to reduce the heat load from the waveguides into the He bath at 2.07 K. A search of copper plating resources is underway for plating or re-plating CEBAF-style waveguides. This effort ensures a continuous capability of copper plating on cryomodule components, especially on waveguides. To qualify plating vendors, the waveguide copper plating specifications were revisited, and a thorough plating evaluation process is being developed. The evaluation process ranges from coupon testing to sample waveguide qualification. Recent results are summarized and future work is planned.

Transportation Fatigue Testing of the pHB650 Power Coupler Antenna for the PIP-II Project at Fermilab

The PIP-II Project will see international shipment of cryomodules from Europe to the United States, and as such, the shocks which can occur during shipment pose a risk to the internal components. Of particular concern is the coupler ceramic window and surrounding brazes, which can see relatively high stress during an excitation event. Since the antenna design is new, and because of the setback failure would create, a cyclic stress test was devised for the antenna. This paper presents the experimental methods, setup, and results of the test.

PCMS: Parallel Coupler For Multimodel Simulations

This paper presents the Parallel Coupler for Multimodel Simulations (PCMS), a new GPU accelerated generalized coupling framework for coupling simulation codes on leadership class supercomputers. PCMS includes distributed control and field mapping methods for up to five dimensions. For field mapping PCMS can utilize discretization and field information to accommodate physics constraints. PCMS is demonstrated with a coupling of the gyrokinetic microturbulence code XGC with a Monte Carlo neutral transport code DEGAS2 and with a 5D distribution function coupling of an energetic particle transport code (GNET) to a gyrokinetic microturbulence code (GTC). Weak scaling is also demonstrated on up to 2,080 GPUs of Frontier with a weak scaling efficiency of 85%.
