Synthesis, Crystal and Electronic Structure of the New Ternary Compound Ca3InAs3

Crystals of a new ternary compound in the Ca-In-As family, Ca3InAs3, have been successfully synthesized via flux growth techniques. This is only the third known compound between the respective elements. As elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements, Ca3InAs3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma (No. 62, Pearson symbol oP28) with unit cell parameters a = 12.296(2) Å, b = 4.2553(7) Å, and c = 13.735(2) Å. The smallest building motifs of the structure are InAs4 tetrahedra, which are connected to one another by shared As corners, forming infinite [InAs2As2/2] chains. The latter propagate along the crystallographic b-axis. The As-In-As bond angles within the InAs4 tetrahedra deviate from the ideal 109.5° value and range from 98.12(2)° to 116.53(2)°, attesting to a small distortion from the regular tetrahedral geometry. Electronic structure calculations indicate the opening of a bandgap, consistent with the expected (Ca2+)3(In3+)(As3–)3 formula breakdown based on conventional oxidation numbers. The calculations also show that the Ca–As interactions are an intermediate between covalent and ionic, while providing evidence of strong covalent features of the In–As interactions. Weak s-p hybridization of In states was observed, supporting the experimentally found deviation of the InAs4 moiety from the ideal tetrahedral symmetry.

Synchronous RNA conformational changes trigger ordered phase transitions in crystals

Time-resolved studies of biomacromolecular crystals have been limited to systems involving only minute conformational changes within the same lattice. Ligand-induced changes greater than several angstroms, however, are likely to result in solid-solid phase transitions, which require a detailed understanding of the mechanistic interplay between conformational and lattice transitions. Here we report the synchronous behavior of the adenine riboswitch aptamer RNA in crystal during ligand-triggered isothermal phase transitions. Direct visualization using polarized video microscopy and atomic force microscopy shows that the RNA molecules undergo cooperative rearrangements that maintain lattice order, whose cell parameters change distinctly as a function of time. The bulk lattice order throughout the transition is further supported by time-resolved diffraction data from crystals using an X-ray free electron laser. The synchronous molecular rearrangements in crystal provide the physical basis for studying large conformational changes using time-resolved crystallography and micro/nanocrystals.

Chemical Preparation, Crystal Structure Reinvestigation and Vibrational Study of CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O and X-ray Characterization of the New Anhydrous Triphosphate CoNa 3 P 3 O 10

The triphosphate dodecahydrate of cobalt and sodium CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O was prepared by the ion exchange resin process. Its structure was studied by X-ray diffraction and determined in the monoclinic space group P12 1 /c1 with the unit-cell parameters a = 14.6650(5) Å, b=9.1916(3) Å, c = 15.0239(5) Å,β =90.2210(10)°, Z = 4 and V = 2025.13(12) Å 3 . The thermal dehydration of this compound was performed, leading to an anhydrous new form, CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 , which was characterized by X-ray diffraction. The obtained CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 crystallized in monoclinic space group P21/n with the unit-cell parameters a=15,3774 Å, b=7,6988 A°, c=14,2832A°, β=92,9115°. The characteristic IR wavenumbers of the P 3 O 10 5- ions observed in the vibrational spectra were calculated using isotopic substitutions, which confirms the existence of these groups in the studied compound. A comparison between the IR and Raman wavenumbers of CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O, CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 and Na 5 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 was performed. A kinetic study was also made for CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O.

New Perspectives of Ancient Mars: Mineral Diversity and Crystal Chemistry at Gale Crater, Mars from the CheMin X-Ray Diffractometer

The Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover arrived at Mars in August 2012 with a primary goal of characterizing the habitability of ancient and modern environments. Curiosity landed in Gale crater to study a sequence of ~3.5 Ga old sedimentary rocks that, based on orbital visible/near-infrared reflectance spectra, contain secondary minerals that suggest deposition and/or alteration in liquid water. The sedimentary sequence that comprises the lower slopes of Mount Sharp within Gale crater may preserve a dramatic shift on early Mars from a relatively warm and wet climate to a cold and dry climate based on a transition from smectite-bearing strata to sulfate-bearing strata. The rover is equipped with cameras and geochemical and mineralogical instruments to examine the sedimentology and identify compositional changes within the stratigraphy. These observations provide information about variations in depositional and diagenetic environments over time. The Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument is one of two internal laboratories on Curiosity and includes a transmission X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer with a Co-K source. CheMin measures loose sediment samples scooped from the surface and drilled rock powders. The XRD provides quantitative mineralogy of scooped and drilled samples to a detection limit of ~1 wt.%. Curiosity has traversed >20 km since landing and has primarily been exploring the site of a predominantly ancient lake environment fed by groundwater and streams emanating from the crater rim. Results from CheMin demonstrate an incredible diversity in the mineralogy of fluvio-lacustrine rocks that signify variations in source rock composition, sediment transport mechanisms, and depositional and diagenetic fluid chemistry. Abundant trioctahedral smectite and magnetite at the base of the section may have formed from low-salinity pore waters with a circumneutral pH within lake sediments. A transition to dioctahedral smectite, hematite, and Ca-sulfate going up section suggests a change to more saline and oxidative aqueous conditions within the lake waters themselves and/or within diagenetic fluids. The primary minerals detected in fluvio-lacustrine samples by CheMin also suggest diversity in the igneous source regions for the sediments, where abundant pyroxene and plagioclase in most samples suggest a basaltic protolith, but sanidine and pyroxene in one sample may have been sourced from a potassic trachyte, and tridymite and sanidine in another sample may have been transported from a rhyolitic source. Crystal chemistry of major phases in each sample have been calculated from refined unit-cell parameters, providing further constraints on aqueous alteration processes and igneous protoliths for the sediments. Perhaps one of the biggest mysteries revealed by the CheMin instrument is the high abundance of X-ray amorphous materials (15 to 73 wt.%) in all samples measured to date. X-ray amorphous materials were detected by CheMin based on the observation of broad humps in XRD patterns. How these materials formed, their composition, and why they persist near the martian surface remain a topic of debate. The sedimentology and composition of the rocks analyzed by Curiosity demonstrate that habitable environments persisted intermittently on the surface or in the subsurface of Gale crater for perhaps more than a billion years.

Crystal Structure of an Anisotropic Pyrope Garnet That Contains Two Cubic Phases

The crystal structure of two different samples of pyrope garnet, ideally Mg 3 Al 2 Si 3 O 12 , from South Africa was refined using the Rietveld method, space group Ia3¯d, and monochromatic synchrotron high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction (HRPXRD) data. Sample 1 from Wesselton Mine is a single cubic phase and is optically isotropic. Electron-probe microanalysis (EPMA) provided an average composition {Mg 2.30 Fe 2+ 0.26 Ca 0.42 Mn 2+ 0.02 } Σ3 [Al 1.53 Fe 3+ 0.06 Cr 3+ 0.40 Ti 4+ 0.01 Fe 2+ 0.01 ] Σ2 Si 3 O 12 , which contains a significant amount of Cr cations. The unit-cell parameter (Å) and bond distances (Å) are a = 11.56197(1) Å, average = 2.2985, Al-O = 1.9101(4), and Si-O = 1.6343(3) Å. Sample 2 from De Beers Diamond Mine has an average composition {Mg 2.33 Fe 2+ 0.33 Ca 0.33 Mn 2+ 0.01 } Σ3 [Al 1.73 Fe 3+ 0.12 Cr 3+ 0.06 Ti 4+ 0.05 Fe 2+ 0.05 ] Σ2 Si 3 O 12 and is a fine-scale intergrowth of two cubic phases. The weight percentage, unit-cell parameter (Å), and bond distances (Å) for phase 2a are 62.2(1)%, a = 11.56185(1) Å, average = 2.3006, Al-O = 1.9080(4), Si-O = 1.6334(4) Å. The corresponding values for phase 2b are 37.8(1)%, a = 11.53896(1) Å, average = 2.2954, Al-O = 1.9020(6), Si-O = 1.6334(6) Å. The two cubic phases in sample 2 cause the crystal to be optically anisotropic because of strain induce birefringence. The unit-cell parameter and bond distances for sample 1 are similar to those in phase 2a.

Enhanced X-ray diffraction of in vivo-grown μNS crystals by viscous jets at XFELs

μNS is a 70 kDa major nonstructural protein of avian reoviruses, which cause significant economic losses in the poultry industry. They replicate inside viral factories in host cells, and the μNS protein has been suggested to be the minimal viral factor required for factory formation. Thus, determining the structure of μNS is of great importance for understanding its role in viral infection. In the study presented here, a fragment consisting of residues 448–605 of μNS was expressed as an EGFP fusion protein in Sf9 insect cells. EGFP-μNS (448–605) crystallization in Sf9 cells was monitored and verified by several imaging techniques. Cells infected with the EGFP-μNS (448–605) baculovirus formed rod-shaped microcrystals (5–15 µm in length) which were reconstituted in high-viscosity media (LCP and agarose) and investigated by serial femtosecond X-ray diffraction using viscous jets at an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). The crystals diffracted to 4.5 Å resolution. A total of 4227 diffraction snapshots were successfully indexed into a hexagonal lattice with unit-cell parameters a = 109.29, b = 110.29, c = 324.97 Å. The final data set was merged and refined to 7.0 Å resolution. Preliminary electron-density maps were obtained. While more diffraction data are required to solve the structure of μNS (448–605) , the current experimental strategy, which couples high-viscosity crystal delivery at an XFEL with in cellulo crystallization, paves the way towards structure determination of the μNS protein.

Crystal Chemistry and Structural Variations for Zircon Samples from Various Localities

This study investigates the variations of structural parameters and chemistry of a partially metamict and seven detrital zircon samples from different localities using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, synchrotron high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction, and electron-probe micro-analysis techniques. The unit-cell parameters for the eight zircon samples vary linearly with increasing unit-cell volume, V. A zircon sample from the Canadian Arctic Islands has the smallest unit-cell parameters, bond distances, ideal stoichiometric composition, unaffected by α-radiation damage, and is chemically pure. A zircon sample from Jemaa, Nigeria has the largest unit-cell parameters because of the effect of α-radiation doses received over a long time (2384 Ma). All the samples show good correlations between Zr and Si apfu (atom per formula unit) versus unit-cell volume, V. The α-radiation doses in the samples are lower than ~3.5 × 1015 α-decay events/mg. Substitutions of other cations at the Zr and Si sites control the variations of the structural parameters. Relatively large unit-cell parameters and bond distances occur because the Zr site accommodates other cations that have larger ionic radii than the Zr atom. Geological age increases the radiation doses in zircon and it is related to V.

Pyrolyzer Assisted Vapor Transport Deposition of Antimony-Doped Cadmium Telluride

In this study, we developed a new method for in situ Sb doping of CdTe thin films combining vapor transport deposition with a Group V pyrolyzer to address Sb doping concentration and doping efficiency. The Sb doped CdSeTe (CdSeTe:Sb) films were deposited in solar cell structures under variations of Sb dopant source heater, vapor pyrolyzer temperature, and Cd vapor excess. Results indicate that although these parameters do not affect the CdTe morphology or crystal structure, they critically influence doping efficiency and trap concentration. Capacitance-voltage measurements show that a higher dopant heater (TD) or pyrolyzer (TP) temperature leads to higher net carrier concentration, achieving a net carrier concentration of 1016 cm-3 and 20% doping efficiency with a TD/TP combination of 600 degrees C/1100 degrees C. By tuning the Cd/Sb flux ratio during CdSeTe:Sb deposition, the lowest defect concentration is achieved at Cd/Sb of 1.4:1, which produced the best VOC CdSeTe:Sb cell. This demonstrates a path to produce high net carrier concentration polycrystalline CdTe thin film with a low concentration of dopant-induced defects.

Efficient light-trapping in ultrathin GaAs solar cells using quasi-random photonic crystals

Ultrathin solar cells reduce material usage and allow the use of lower-quality materials thanks to their one order of magnitude smaller thickness than their conventional counterparts. However, efficient photonic light-trapping is required to harvest the incident light efficiently for an otherwise insufficient absorber thickness. Quasi-random photonic crystals are predicted to have high efficient light-trapping while being more robust under angle and thickness variations than simple photonic crystals. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate a light-trapping solution based on quasi-random photonic crystals fabricated by polymer blend lithography. We control the average lattice parameter by modifying the spin-coating speed. We demonstrate an ultrathin GaAs cell of 260 nm with a rear quasi-random pattern with submicron features, and a J sc = 26.4 mA/cm 2 and an efficiency of 22.35% under the global solar spectrum.

The Curious Case of [AnH(NR 2 ) 3 ] (An = Th, U; R = SiMe 3 ): Two Monomeric Actinide Hydrides Revisited

The reaction of AnCl 4 (DME) x (An = Th, x = 2; An = U, x = 0) with 4 equiv of NaNR 2 (R = SiMe 3 ) in THF at 65 °C results in the formation of [An{N(R)(SiMe 2 CH 2 )}(NR 2 ) 2 ] (An = U, 1; An = Th, 2), and not the reported monomeric actinide hydrides, [AnH(NR 2 ) 3 ], as expected. Furthermore, both complexes 1 and 2 were characterized by X-ray crystallography. Surprisingly, their unit cell parameters are remarkably close to those reported for [AnH(NR 2 ) 3 ], suggesting that the original crystals of [AnH(NR 2 ) 3 ] were, in fact, [An{N(R)(SiMe 2 CH 2 )}(NR 2 ) 2 ], but were misidentified. Reduction of 1 with 1.1 equiv of KC 8 in THF, in the presence of 1 equiv of 2.2.2-cryptand, results in the formation of [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U{N(R)(SiMe 2 CH 2 )}(NR 2 ) 2 ] (3) in good yield. Likewise, the reaction of 1 with 1 equiv of bis(diisopropylamino)cyclopropenylidene (BAC) results in the formation of the BAC adduct, [(BAC)U{N(R)(SiMe 2 CH 2 )}(NR 2 ) 2 ] (4), in moderate yield. Finally, the addition of H 2 (10 bar) to 2 in C 6 D 6 at room temperature results in the formation of the targeted monomeric hydride, [ThH(NR 2 ) 3 ], in 32% yield, according to integrations against an internal standard. However, removal of the H 2 atmosphere results in rapid reformation of 2. In contrast, the addition of H 2 (10 bar) to 1 in C 6 D 6 at room temperature results in no apparent reaction.

Dehydration synthesis and crystal structure of terbium oxychloride, TbOCl

Terbium oxychloride, TbOCl, was synthesized via a simple heat-treatment of TbCl3·6H2O. The structure was determined using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) data. The TbOCl compound crystallizes within the tetragonal P4/nmm space group, and its crystal structure is composed of alternating layers of (TbO)n and n Cl- anions. The unit cell parameters, volume, and density were compared to the literature data of other isostructural rare-earth oxychlorides in the P4/nmm space group and showed a good agreement when fitted to the calculated trendlines.

Synthesis, Crystal and Electronic Structure of Layered AM Sb Compounds ( A = Rb, Cs; M = Zn, Cd): Synthesis, Crystal and Electronic Structure of Layered AM Sb Compounds ( A = Rb, Cs; M = Zn, Cd)

Synthesis, crystal structure, thermal stability, and electronic band structure of four new metal antimonides AMSb (A = Rb, Cs; M = Zn, Cd) are reported. CsZnSb and RbZnSb crystallize in the hexagonal ZrBeSi structure type, in a P6 3 /mmc space group (no. 194, Z = 2) and unit cell dimensions of a = 4.5588(2)/4.5466(4) Å and c = 11.9246(6)/11.0999(10) Å. CsCdSb and RbCdSb crystallize in the tetragonal PbFCl structure type in a P4/nmm space group (no. 129; Z = 2) and unit cell parameters of a = 4.8884(5)/4.8227(3) Å and c = 8.8897(9)/8.5492(7) Å. All four compounds are air- and water-sensitive and are shown through DSC measurements to decompose between 975 K and 1060 K. Analysis of the calculated electronic band structure shows that the Zn-containing antimonides are topologically trivial narrow bandgap semiconductors, whereas Cd-containing compounds exhibit a band inversion along Γ-Z direction.

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity and Thermoelectric Properties of Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13

Complex bismuth chalcogenides are narrow band gap semiconductors with intrinsic low thermal conductivity, which exhibit high potential as highly efficient thermoelectric materials. Here, we assess the basic thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13 in the temperature range 300-823 K as well as performance-optimizing strategies. We find that the as-made bulk samples are single phase with the monoclinic crystal structure (P2 1 /m) and crystallize in layer morphology. The pristine sample exhibits an exceedingly low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.6- 0.46 W·m -1 ·K -1 at 300-823 K, which derives from strong lattice anharmonicity, large Grüneisen parameters, and low phonon velocities induced by the complex crystal structure with heavy atom Bi and a large unit cell. Here, the Cl doping successfully enhances the carrier concentration in Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13 with a negligible impact on the electronic band structure, displaying common doping behaviors. Se vacancy, on the contrary, leads to n-type doping and enhances the effective mass and power factors more significantly. Consequently, a maximum ZT of ~0.75 at 823 K for the 0.3% Se-vacancy-doped sample is obtained.

Using Complementary Methods of Synchrotron Radiation Powder Diffraction and Pair Distribution Function to Refine Crystal Structures with High Quality Parameters—A Review

Determination of the atomic-scale structures of certain fine-grained minerals using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) has been challenging because they commonly occur as submicron and nanocrystals in the geological environment. Synchrotron powder diffraction and scattering techniques are useful complementary methods for studying this type of minerals. In this review, we discussed three example studies investigated by combined methods of synchrotron radiation XRD and pair distribution function (PDF) techniques: (1) low-temperature cristobalite; (2) kaolinite; and (3) vernadite. Powder XRD is useful to determine the average structure including unit-cell parameters, fractional atomic coordinates, occupancies and isotropic atomic displacement parameters. X-ray/Neutron PDF methods are sensitive to study the local structure with anisotropic atomic displacement parameters (ADP). The results and case studies suggest that the crystal structure and high-quality ADP values can be obtained using the combined methods. The method can be useful to characterize crystals and minerals that are not suitable for single-crystal XRD.

Crystal structure, magnetism, and specific heat of lightly depleted layered honeycomb oxides, Na$_2$(Ni$_{2-x}$D$_x$)TeO$_6$ ($D$ = Mg, Ga, Co; 0.10 ≤ $x$ ≤ 0.25)

Layered oxides, in which transition metal atoms form a honeycomb lattice, are known for complex magnetic phase diagrams. In this work we study the doped compounds, Na$_2$(Ni$_{2-x}$D$_x$)TeO$_6$, $D$ = Mg, Ga, and Co (0.10 ≤ $x$ ≤ 0.25), to understand how chemical dilution at the nickel site influences the stability of magnetic exchanges within the honeycomb layer of the parent, Na$_2$ Ni$_2$ TeO$_6$. Here, the studied compounds were found to crystallize in $P6_3/mcm$ space group common to P2 type layered oxides. In general, the lattice parameters and the unit cell volume expanded with increased doping. The oxidation states determined from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were consistent with bond valence sum estimates, that confirmed the presence of Ni$^{2+}$, Mg$^{2+}$, Ga$^{3+}$, Co$^{2+}$ in our samples. Irrespective of magnetic or non-magnetic doping, the magnetic phase transition temperature ($T_N$) of the doped compounds were reduced from that of Na$_2$ Ni$_2$ TeO$_6$ or Na$_2$ Co$_2$ TeO$_6$, and lay between 21.7 K and 26.8 K. The effective paramagnetic moments extracted from Curie–Weiss analysis were in the range 3.17 μ B to 3.84 μ B and the Weiss temperatures were between $-15$ K and $-25$ K, suggesting antiferromagnetism. Mg- and Ga-doped compounds showed free spin formation, indicated by Curie–Weiss tails in their magnetic susceptibility. Our results suggest emergence of short-range magnetic correlations in Na$_2$(Ni$_{2-x}$D$_x$)TeO$_6$, enhanced due to the depletion of the Ni honeycomb lattice.

Radiation-Induced Changes in Single Crystal Calcite and Dolomite: Mineral Analogues of Light Water Reactor, Nuclear Power Plant Concrete Aggregates

Two analogues of aggregates (calcite and dolomite) found in nuclear power plant (NPP) concrete have been neutron irradiated to fluences up to 2 × 10 20 n/cm 2 at 52 °C and 4 × 10 19 n/cm 2 at 95 °C (E > 0.1 MeV). X-ray diffraction studies showed that these aging conditions affected crystallography of both calcite and dolomite, with both showing a growth in their unit cells compared to that of the unirradiated samples. Only dolomite samples showed a continuous increase of its lattice parameters with the increase in irradiation. In calcites, the lattice growth with irradiation dissipated after a fluence of 5 × 10 18 n/cm 2 . Radiation-induced disordering of the crystal structure was observed in both materials, while a healing effect of irradiation temperature was mainly observed in calcites. Dislocation densities calculated by using XRD data also supported these observations. Insights made into the unit cells of both minerals by using Fourier synthesis showed that the Mg sites are more prone to the neutron irradiation than the Ca sites, resulting in larger radiation effects and higher disruption in the crystal structure of dolomite than that of calcite. Furthermore, other than the polycrystalline characteristics observed by using TEM, these minerals did not show complete amorphization or significant structural decomposition at the studied irradiation fluences.
