Understanding Commercial Building Energy Use in Small Urban Areas in the Dakotas, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming: Building Stock Segmentation for Retrofit Planning

This report is part of the second phase of a publication series focusing on approximately 100 different local geographies, or "clusters." Each report provides characteristic features and energy data for commercial buildings in a specific area to help policy makers at the city, county, and state level better understand building energy use and emissions. This report breaks down the energy consumption and emissions of the building stock in the counties shown in Figure 2 by building type, building size, end use, energy consumption, emissions, and segment.

Understanding Multifamily Energy Use in Small Urban Areas in the Dakotas, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming: Building Stock Segmentation for Retrofit Planning

This report is an addendum to a publication series that focuses on approximately 100 different local geographies, or "clusters". This addendum expands the report series to include large multifamily building characteristics as well as energy and emission data for each local geography. The intention of this addendum is to help policymakers at the city, county, and state levels better understand building energy use and emissions in large multifamily buildings.

On the Feasibility of Geophysical Methods for CO 2 Monitoring in the North Dakota CarbonSAFE Project

Conference presentation at American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Annual Meeting, Phoenix, AZ, November 13–18, 2022. An analysis of rock physics crossplots and diagnostic models suggests that the baseline seismic data may be sensitive to changes in lithology and porosity of the Broom Creek Formation and that these changes may be detectable by prestack seismic inversion.

Geochemical Modeling of the Confining Unit at a CO 2 Storage Site in the Williston Basin, North Dakota

Conference presentation for American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Conference, Houston, TX, April 25–27, 2023. This geochemical modeling study investigates the evolution of geochemical reactions among CO 2 , formation water, and rocks of the two confining units above and below the CO 2 storage unit at one of the permitted CO 2 storage sites in the Williston Basin. The model is built on PHREEQC-coded chemical equilibrium thermodynamics.

Using Controlled-Source Electromagnetic (CSEM) for CO 2 Storage Monitoring in the North Dakota CarbonSAFE Project

Conference presentation for International Meeting for Applied Geophysics & Energy (IMAGE), September 26 – October 1, 2021, Denver, CO. Geophysical methods are key for characterizing the geologic formations to store CO 2 and monitor the injected CO 2 over time to ensure containment. In the integrated multimeasurement geophysical approach considered for this project, it is expected that the controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) method is a strong contributor to mapping the CO 2 movement. A feasibility study of the CSEM method, including 1D and 3D modeling and a field noise test, was conducted to determine its effectiveness in monitoring CO 2 in the Broom Creek and Deadwood Formations. The study results demonstrate that the CSEM method can be used for CO 2 storage monitoring in the study area.

Low-Environmental-Impact Monitoring of CO 2 Using Seismic Methods in North Dakota

Conference poster presented at American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Conference, Houston, Texas, March 28–30, 2022. In 2021, the Energy & Environmental Research Center initiated a multiyear research project associated with Red Trail Energy’s Carbon Capture and Storage Project. The research is based on the scalable automated sparse seismic array (SASSA), a lower-cost, less invasive seismic method that could replace the large-scale 3D seismic surveys by using four stationary seismic sources called surface orbital vibrators (SOVs) and a small number of seismic sensors deployed sparsely within the same 8-square-mile area investigated with a 3D seismic survey conducted in 2019.

Geomechanical Study for Stacked Carbon Dioxide Storage in North Dakota

Conference presentation at American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Conference, Houston, Texas, April 25–27, 2023. When multiple carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) storage targets are present in the subsurface at the same geographic location, a CO 2 storage project may pursue a stacked storage approach. This study focused on assessing geomechanical effects on dedicated storage in stacked saline aquifers during a 20-year CO 2 injection project life.
