Towards Cross-Facility Workflows Orchestration through Distributed Automation

Modern science relies on end-to-end workflows that incorporate experimental instruments and utilize edge, cloud, or high-performance computing and storage resources. These components are geographically dispersed across various user facilities and interconnected through high-speed networks. In this paper, we present Zambeze, an automated distributed framework designed to facilitate this new class of cross-facility workflows. Utilizing swarm intelligence principles, Zambeze orchestrates science campaigns by managing distributed autonomous agents. These agents can offer a suite of services, including computing, storage, and data management. We demonstrate the feasibility of Zambeze through a real-world application involving electron microscopy, enhanced with Artificial Intelligence capabilities.

Janus v1.0

Janus provides a software framework for lightweight container management and orchestration. It's primary use cases are around deploying containerized services for high-performance data movement needs. Thus, Janus differentiates itself from systems like Kubernetes by tailoring the deployment of containers around network, storage, and host tuning optimizations. Janus uses the concept of profiles to capture repeatable deployment patterns and applies them to container execution across one or more endpoints. A Janus Agent component provides remote host tuning and monitoring capabilities.

1995 OMPO Model Development Project

The 1995 Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization (OMPO) Model Development Project for Oahu Island was intended to document how Oahu residents use the streets, highways, and transit services in the region. These data were used to develop the Travel Demand Forecasting Model, which is used to forecast the traffic impacts of various land use changes. The survey collected complete travel information of 4,060 Oahu households for a 24-hour period, including demographic and socioeconomic data.

CONTROL AND DATA ACQUISITION IN A CYBER-PHYSICAL MIDSTREAM TESTBED

This thesis presents the development of a laboratory-scale cyber–physical midstream pipeline testbed designed to address this gap and support research in industrial control systems security. The platform integrates pumps, valves, sensors, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and a human–machine interface (HMI) to emulate the monitoring and control architecture of real pipeline operations. The physical process is implemented as a closed-loop liquid circulation system designed to replicate flow behavior characteristic of midstream pipeline infrastructure. The testbed enables real-time data acquisition of key process variables, including flow rate and pressure facilitating the generation of datasets representative of normal pipeline operation. A threat model encompassing common ICS attack vectors was developed, including sensor spoofing, command injection, false data injection, denial-of-service attacks, and relay manipulation. Multiple attack scenarios were implemented and evaluated to demonstrate how cyber intrusions targeting sensors, actuators, networks, and software propagate into measurable physical consequences in pipeline flow and pressure. The developed platform serves as a practical, cost-effective environment for experimentation, education, and future cybersecurity research in midstream pipeline systems.

Analyzing Residential Charging Demand for Light-Duty Electric Vehicles in Colorado

The past decade has witnessed a remarkable surge in adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). The momentum is expected to continue with strong support from governments and industry. Rapid EV adoption will add significant electricity demand, making it critical to plan for and manage EV charging to avoid causing additional stress and non-negligible risks to the already-aging power grid. To help power grid operators understand the impacts of residential EV charging and identify risk factors, this study presents a data-driven charging demand analysis for light-duty vehicles. This study considers two real-world grid service regions in Colorado and merges multiple data sources and state-of-the-art tools that characterize EV adoption projections, vehicle travel patterns, seasonal variations, residential charging accessibility, ambient temperature impact, EV charging behaviors, grid utility customers, vehicle registration, and household-level EV charging demand distribution. We characterize potential residential charging demand in 2030 for two regions within the state of Colorado: Boulder and Aurora regions. We project that EVs will be 26% of the light-duty vehicle population in Boulder and 16% in Aurora areas. Charging demand is characterized for ten power grid feeders (five for each study region). Across the ten feeders, peak total EV charging powers during wintertime range from less than 1 MW to more than 4 MW.

Reducing Deferrals by Integrating Health Homes with Weatherization

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) improves energy efficiency and household health for low-income families, yet a substantial number of otherwise eligible homes are deferred from due to health and safety concerns in their homes, including mold, moisture damage, or structural deficiencies. These deferred homes are often occupied by marginalized or otherwise vulnerable residents who may be exposed to elevated indoor air pollutant concentration. Integrating Healthy Homes (HH) interventions with weatherization has been proposed as a strategy to reduce deferrals, address environmental justice concerns, and improve health outcomes. However, limited data on the health and economic implications of such integration exist. This study aimed to assess the potential health benefits and savings-to-investment ratio (SIR) associated with integrating Healthy Homes interventions into weatherization programs for homes typically deferred from WAP services. We collected indoor air pollutant data from homes undergoing health home renovations, including fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), carbon monoxide (CO), and formaldehyde, with sampling times up to one month. Except for fomaldehyde, which was measured using passive UMEx badges, the other metrics were measured using the airQ Pro indoor air quality monitor.

2003 Interstate 595 Vehicle Trip-Length Study

# 2003 Interstate 595 Vehicle Trip-Length Study The 2003 Vehicle Trip-Length Study focused on Interstate 595 between Davie Road and University Drive in Florida. Survey participants answered questions about their trip's origin and destination—including the type of location such as work, home, store, etc.—the on- and off-ramps used, how many people were in the car, and the type of vehicle. The survey also collected household demographic data such as annual household income, available vehicles, the number of people living in their household, and the number of workers in their household above the age of 16. It also asked if they would use proposed bus-only lanes or train service along the corridor, if available. ## Data Collection Agency The survey was conducted by and for the Florida Department of Transportation. ## Survey Methodology The survey was conducted via mail and online in March 2003. ## Survey Records, Data, and Documentation Survey records include 7,917 participants. Origin and destination locations include street addresses, nearest intersections or landmarks, city, state, zip code, and latitude/longitude.
