Search for light long-lived neutral particles that decay to collimated pairs of leptons or light hadrons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for light long-lived neutral particles with masses in the O(MeV–GeV) range is presented. The analysis targets the production of long-lived dark photons in the decay of a Higgs boson produced via gluon–gluon fusion or in association with a W boson. Events that contain displaced collimated Standard Model fermions reconstructed in the calorimeter or muon spectrometer are selected in 139 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV $pp$ collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Background estimates for contributions from Standard Model processes and instrumental effects are extracted from data. The observed event yields are consistent with the expected background. Exclusion limits are reported on the production cross-section times branching fraction as a function of the mean proper decay length cτ of the dark photon, or as a function of the dark-photon mass and kinetic mixing parameter that quantifies the coupling between the Standard Model and potential hidden (dark) sectors. A Higgs boson branching fraction above 1% is excluded at 95% CL for a Higgs boson decaying into two dark photons for dark-photon mean proper decay lengths between 10 mm and 250 mm and dark photons with masses between 0.4 GeV and 2 GeV.

Inelastic Scattering of a Photon by a Quantum Phase Slip

Spontaneous decay of a single photon is a notoriously inefficient process in nature irrespective of the frequency range. We report that a quantum phase-slip fluctuation in high-impedance superconducting waveguides can split a single incident microwave photon into a large number of lower-energy photons with a near unit probability. The underlying inelastic photon-photon interaction has no analogs in non-linear optics. Instead, the measured decay rates are explained without adjustable parameters in the framework of a new model of a quantum impurity in a Luttinger liquid. Our result connects circuit quantum electrodynamics to critical phenomena in two-dimensional boundary quantum field theories, important in the physics of strongly-correlated systems. Here, the photon lifetime data represents a rare example of verified and useful quantum many-body simulation.

Efficient lattice QCD computation of radiative-leptonic-decay form factors at multiple positive and negative photon virtualities

In previous work [D. Giusti, Methods for high-precision determinations of radiative-leptonic decay form factors using lattice QCD, Phys. Rev. D 107, 074507 (2023)], we showed that form factors for radiative leptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons can be determined efficiently and with high precision from lattice QCD using the “three-dimensional (3D) method,” in which three-point functions are computed for all values of the current insertion time and the time integral is performed at the data-analysis stage. Here, we demonstrate another benefit of the 3D method: the form factors can be extracted for any number of nonzero photon virtualities from the same three-point functions at no extra cost. We present results for the $D_s → ℓνγ*$ vector form factor as a function of photon energy and photon virtuality, for both positive and negative virtuality, for a single ensemble with 340 MeV pion mass and 0.11 fm lattice spacing. In our analysis, we separately consider the two different time orderings and the different quark flavors in the electromagnetic current. We discuss in detail the behavior of the unwanted exponentials contributing to the three-point functions, as well as the choice of fit models and fit ranges used to remove them for various values of the virtuality. While positive photon virtuality is relevant for decays to multiple charged leptons, negative photon virtuality suppresses soft contributions and is of interest in QCD-factorization studies of the form factors.

Search for the Higgs boson decay to a Z boson and a photon in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and 13.6 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the Higgs boson decay to a Z boson and a photon in the ℓℓγ (ℓ = 𝑒,𝜇) final state is performed using pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during 2022–2024, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 165 fb−1. The signal yield, normalised to the Standard Model prediction, is measured to be 𝜇 = 0.9$^{+0.7}_{−0.6}$, compatible with the expected value of 𝜇 = 1.0 ± 0.7. This corresponds to an observed (expected) signal significance of 1.4 (1.5) standard deviations under the background-only hypothesis. This result is combined with that of a similar search performed with 140 fb −1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp collisions to provide the best expected sensitivity to date to this rare decay, namely an observed (expected) signal strength of 𝜇 = 1.3$^{+0.6}_{−0.5}$ (𝜇 = 1.0$^{+0.6}_{−0.5}$), corresponding to an observed (expected) significance of 2.5 (1.9) standard deviations. The measurement is consistent with the Standard Model expectation.

Joint explanation of the B → π K puzzle and the B → K ν ν ¯ excess

In light of the recent branching fraction measurement of the B + → K + ν ν ¯ decay by Belle II and its poor agreement with the Standard Model expectation, we analyze the effects of an axionlike particle (ALP) in B meson decays. We assume a long-lived ALP with a mass of the order of the pion mass that decays to two photons. We focus on a scenario where the ALP decay length is of the order of meters such that the ALP has a non-negligible probability to decay outside the detector volume of Belle II, mimicking the B + → K + ν ν ¯ signal. Remarkably, such an arrangement is also relevant for the long-standing B → π K puzzle by noting that the measured B 0 → π 0 K 0 and B + → π 0 K + decays could have a B 0 → a K 0 and B + → a K + component, respectively. We also argue based on our results that the required ALP-photon effective coupling belongs to a region of parameter space that can be extensively probed in future beam dump experiments like SHiP. Dark Photon Search at the Short-Baseline Near Detector

Neutrino physics has long been a key field in elementary particle physics, both enhancing our understanding of the Standard Model (SM) and raising new questions. Among these are the so-called "Short-Baseline Anomalies" observed by neutrino experiments, particularly the MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab, which detected an excess of low-energy electron-like events. In recent years, beyond Standard Model (BSM) explanations have been proposed to address this anomaly, with a focus on neutrino beam-related processes. A novel interpretation involving a dark-sector explanation was recently suggested, introducing a vector portal that connects the SM and dark sectors through a new interaction mediated by a bosonic particle, the Dark Photon. This work investigates the production of dark-sector particles, specifically Dark Photons, in the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermilab and their potential detection at the Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND). The BNB produces mesons which decay into Dark Photons, detectable via their decay into electron-positron pairs at SBND. By exploiting the temporal structure of the neutrino beam, we propose a method to isolate Dark Photon signals from neutrino backgrounds using time-delayed event detection. In this thesis, the sensitivity of SBND to Dark Photons is assessed using a three-year exposure, demonstrating that SBND has the potential to significantly improve current experimental constraints on Dark Photons. This analysis provides a promising avenue for future dark sector searches in neutrino experiments.

Calculating the two-photon exchange contribution to K L → μ + μ − decay

We present a theoretical framework within which both the real and imaginary parts of the complex, two-photon exchange amplitude contributing to K L → μ + μ − decay can be calculated using lattice quantum chromodynamics. The real part of this two-photon amplitude is of approximately the same size as that coming from a second-order weak strangeness-changing neutral-current process. Thus a test of the standard model prediction for this second-order weak process depends on an accurate result of this two-photon amplitude. A limiting factor of our proposed method comes from low-energy three-particle π π γ states. The contribution from these states will be significantly distorted by the finite volume of our calculation—a distortion for which there is no available correction. However, a simple estimate of the contribution of these three-particle states suggests their contribution to be at most a few percent allowing their neglect in a lattice calculation with a 10% target accuracy. Search for Higgs boson decays to a Z boson and a photon in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Results are presented from a search for the Higgs boson decay H → Zγ, where Z → ℓ$^{+}$ℓ$^{−}$ with ℓ = e or μ. The search is performed using a sample of proton-proton (pp) collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. Events are assigned to mutually exclusive categories, which exploit differences in both event topology and kinematics of distinct Higgs production mechanisms to enhance signal sensitivity. The signal strength μ, defined as the product of the cross section and the branching fraction $ \left[\sigma \left(\textrm{pp}\to \textrm{H}\right)\mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{H}\to \textrm{Z}\upgamma \right)\right] $ relative to the standard model prediction, is extracted from a simultaneous fit to the ℓ$^{+}$ℓ$^{−}$γ invariant mass distributions in all categories and is measured to be μ = 2.4 ± 0.9 for a Higgs boson mass of 125.38 GeV. The statistical significance of the observed excess of events is 2.7 standard deviations. This measurement corresponds to $ \left[\sigma \left(\textrm{pp}\to \textrm{H}\right)\mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{H}\to \textrm{Z}\upgamma \right)\right]=0.21\pm 0.08 $ pb. The observed (expected) upper limit at 95% confidence level on μ is 4.1 (1.8), where the expected limit is calculated under the background-only hypothesis. The ratio of branching fractions $ \mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{H}\to \textrm{Z}\upgamma \right)/\mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{H}\to \upgamma \upgamma \right) $ is measured to be $ {1.5}_{-0.6}^{+0.7} $, which agrees with the standard model prediction of 0.69 ± 0.04 at the 1.5 standard deviation level.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for signatures of electroweakinos with photons, jets, and large missing transverse momentum in s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search for final states characterised by at least one isolated high transverse-momentum photon, jets and large missing transverse momentum is presented. Such a final state might occur in gauge-mediated supersymmetric models where a pair of binos and higgsinos mix to form neutralinos, one of which decays into a photon plus a gravitino while the other decays into a Higgs boson, a Z boson or a photon, plus a gravitino. The search is performed using the full Run-2 data sample of 140 fb−1 of s=13$$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ TeV proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of events is observed above the Standard Model prediction and model-dependent exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are set. These limits are interpreted in terms of the masses of gauginos, which are excluded up to 1.2 TeV depending on their branching ratios, and on their branching ratios as a function of their mass.

Robustness and Eventual Slow Decay of Bound States of Interacting Microwave Photons in the Google Quantum AI Experiment

Integrable models are characterized by the existence of stable excitations that can propagate indefinitely without decaying. This includes multimagnon bound states in the celebrated 𝑋⁢𝑋⁢𝑍 spin-chain model and its integrable Floquet counterpart. A recent Google Quantum AI experiment [A. Morvan et al., Nature 612, 240 (2022)] realizing the Floquet model has demonstrated the persistence of such collective excitations even when the integrability is broken: this observation is at odds with the expectation of ergodic dynamics in generic nonintegrable systems. Here, we study the spectrum of the model realized in the experiment using exact diagonalization and physical arguments. We find that isolated bands corresponding to the descendants of the exact bound states of the integrable model are clearly observable in the spectrum for a large range of system sizes. However, our numerical analysis of the localization properties of the eigenstates suggests that the bound states become unstable in the thermodynamic limit. A perturbative estimate of the decay rate agrees with the prediction of an eventual instability for large system sizes.

Vectorlike leptons and long-lived bosons at the LHC

We study a renormalizable theory that includes a heavy weak-singlet vectorlike lepton, $\tau$', that decays into a pseudoscalar boson and a tau lepton. We show that this can be the dominant decay mode of $\tau$' provided the pseudoscalar couplings deviate from the case of a Nambu-Goldstone boson. For a range of parameters, the pseudoscalar is long-lived, and mainly decays into a photon pair at one loop, or into a tau pair at tree level. Electroweak production of $\tau$' + $\tau$' - leads to a rich phenomenology at colliders, including signals with many taus or photons. We analyze in detail the LHC signal involving two prompt taus and two displaced photon pairs. Particularly interesting is the case where the pseudoscalar has a decay length of a few meters and thus would typically deposit energy in the muon chambers of the CMS or ATLAS detectors.

Search for flavor changing neutral current interactions of the top quark in final states with a photon and additional jets in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for the production of a top quark in association with a photon and additional jets via flavor changing neutral current interactions is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 . The search is performed by looking for processes where a single top quark is produced in association with a photon, or a pair of top quarks where one of the top quarks decays into a photon and an up or charm quark. Events with an electron or a muon, a photon, one or more jets, and missing transverse momentum are selected. Multivariate analysis techniques are used to discriminate signal and standard model background processes. No significant deviation is observed over the predicted background. Observed (expected) upper limits are set on the branching fractions of top quark decays: B ( t → u γ ) < 0.95 × 10 - 5 ( 1.20 × 10 - 5 ) and B ( t → c γ ) < 1.51 × 10 - 5 ( 1.54 × 10 - 5 ) at 95% confidence level, assuming a single nonzero coupling at a time. The obtained limit for B ( t → u γ ) is similar to the current best limit, while the limit for B ( t → c γ ) is significantly tighter than previous results.

Search for Higgs boson production in association with a high-energy photon via vector-boson fusion with decay into bottom quark pairs at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for the production of the Standard Model Higgs boson in association with a high-energy photon. With a focus on the vector-boson fusion process and the dominant Higgs boson decay into b-quark pairs, the search benefits from a large reduction of multijet background compared to more inclusive searches. Results are reported from the analysis of 132 fb –1 of pp collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measured Higgs boson signal yield in this final-state signature is 1.3 ± 1.0 times the Standard Model prediction. The observed significance of the Higgs boson signal above the background is 1.3 standard deviations, compared to an expected significance of 1.0 standard deviations.

Lattice calculation of light meson radiative leptonic decays

In this work, we perform a lattice QCD calculation of the branching ratios and the form factors\r\nof radiative leptonic decays P →ℓνℓγ (P= π,K) using Nf = 2+1 domain wall fermion ensembles\r\ngenerated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations at the physical pion mass. We adopt the\r\ninfinite-volume reconstruction (IVR) method, which extends lattice data to infinite volume and\r\neffectively controls the finite-volume effects. This study represents a first step toward a complete\r\ncalculation of radiative corrections to leptonic decays using the IVR method, including both real\r\nphoton emissions and virtual photon loops. For decays involving a final-state electron, collinear\r\nradiative corrections, enhanced by the large logarithmic factors such as ln(m2\r\nπ/m2e) and ln(m2K/m2e), can reach the level of O(10%) and are essential at the current level of theoretical and experimental precision. After including these corrections, our result for π →eνeγ agrees with the PIBETA measurement; for K →eνeγ, our results are consistent with the KLOE data and exhibit a 1.7σtension with E36; and for K →µνµγ, where radiative corrections are negligible, our results confirm the previously observed discrepancies between lattice results and the ISTRA/OKA measurements at large photon energies, and with the E787 results at large muon–photon angles.

Searches for exclusive Higgs and Z boson decays into a vector quarkonium state and a photon using 139 fb$^{-1}$ of ATLAS $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV proton–proton collision data

Searches for the exclusive decays of Higgs and Z bosons into a vector quarkonium state and a photon are performed in the μ + μ - γ final state with a proton– proton collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 collected at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The observed data are compatible with the expected back grounds. The 95% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fractions of the Higgs boson decays into J/ψ γ , ψ(2S) γ , and $Υ$(1S, 2S, 3S) γ are found to be 2.0 × 10 -4 , 10.5×10 -4 , and (2.5, 4.2, 3.4)×10 -4 , respectively, assuming Standard Model production of the Higgs boson. The corresponding 95% CL upper limits on the branching fractions of the Z boson decays are 1.2 × 10 -6 , 2.4 × 10 -6 , and (1.1, 1.3, 2.4) × 10 -6 . An observed 95% CL interval of (-133, 175) is obtained for the κ c /κ γ ratio of Higgs boson coupling modifiers, and a 95% CL interval of (-37, 40) is obtained for κ b /κ γ .

Measurement of neutral current single π 0 production on argon with the MicroBooNE detector

We report the first measurement of π 0 production in neutral current (NC) interactions on argon with average neutrino energy of ≲1 GeV. We use data from the MicroBooNE detector’s 85-tonne active volume liquid argon time projection chamber situated in Fermilab’s Booster Neutrino Beam and exposed to 5.89 × 10 20 protons on target for this measurement. Measurements of NC π 0 events are reported for two exclusive event topologies without charged pions. Those include a topology with two photons from the decay of the π 0 and one proton and a topology with two photons and zero protons. Flux-averaged cross-sections for each exclusive topology and for their semi-inclusive combination are extracted (efficiency-correcting for two-plus proton final states), and the results are compared to predictions from the GENIE, NEUT, and NUWRO neutrino event generators. We measure cross sections of 1.243 ± 0.185 (syst) ±0.076 (stat), 0.444 ± 0.098 ± 0.047, and 0.624 ± 0.131 ± 0.075 [10 -38 cm 2 /Ar] for the semi-inclusive NCπ 0 , exclusive NCπ 0 +1p, and exclusive NCπ 0 +0p processes, respectively.

Evidence for Higgs boson decays to a low-mass dilepton system and a photon in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the Higgs boson decaying into a photon and a pair of electrons or muons with an invariant mass mℓℓ < 30 GeV is presented. The analysis is performed using 139 fb -1 of proton–proton collision data, produced by the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and collected by the ATLAS experiment. Evidence for the H → ℓℓγ process is found with a significance of 3.2 over the background-only hypothesis, compared to an expected significance of 2.1 for the Standard Model prediction. The best-fit value of the signal-strength parameter, defined as the ratio of the observed signal yield to the one expected in the Standard Model, is μ=1.5±0.5. The Higgs boson production cross-section times the H → ℓℓγ branching ratio for mℓℓ < 30 GeV is determined to be $8.7_{-2.7}^{+2.8}$ fb.
