Variable Chain Length Carboxylic Acids as Modifiers to Enhance the Antiviral Efficacy of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate.

Non-toxic disinfectants composed of readily available commodity chemicals are needed for immediate response to the current COVID-19 pandemic. One such area is the active research field for food-grade sanitization. Combinations of levulinic acid, a five-carbon ketocarboxylic acid, and sodium dodecyl sulfate, have been frequently described for antibacterial use on food contact surfaces. Levulinic acid has been identified as a renewable feedstock but is not presently in commodity production. Other carboxylic acids, such as acetic acid, may be equally usable and food-safe. Acidic and buffered solutions were highly effective, yielding no countable surviving organisms. The high efficacy of each acid may suggest that carboxylic acid sanitizers in general have potential use against viruses.

Operating Lifetime Study of Ultraviolet (UV) Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Products

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can emit radiation that spans the range from near infrared (IR) to all three bands of ultraviolet (UV) radiation: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. This report focuses on LEDs that emit in one of the three UV bands because they have the potential to displace lowpressure mercury vapor (LPMV) lamps in a variety of industrial processes, including ink and adhesive curing, medical procedures, and germicidal disinfection. However, before emerging UV LED technologies can displace LPMV lamps, the efficiency and reliability of these sources must meet the user’s expectations in each application. An earlier report focused on the construction and initial performance of commercial UV LED products in radiometric and current-voltage (IV) tests [1]. This report focuses on the long-term performance and reliability of the same set of commercial products. The intent of this report is to provide to the lighting industry a benchmark of the state of UV LEDs as of mid-2021 when these products were purchased. Understanding the failure modes and failure rates of UV LEDs is important in improving UV product reliability at the LED, lamp, and luminaire level and is critical to developing products with higher efficiency, lower carbon footprint, and significantly reduced environmental impact than LPMV lamps.

Ethyl Formate Fumigation against Pineapple Mealybug, Dysmicoccus brevipes , a Quarantine Insect Pest of Pineapples

Pineapple mealybug, Dysmicoccus brevipes (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), is a significant pest in pineapple production and a key trade barrier. We explored the potential use of ethyl formate (EF) as a methyl bromide alternative for the postharvest fumigation of D. brevipes in imported pineapples. When treated at 8 °C for 4 h, EF fumigation was effective against D. brevipes with LCt 99 , the lethal concentration × time product of EF necessary to achieve 99% mortality of D. brevipes nymphs and adults at 64.2 and 134.8 g h/m 3 , respectively. Sorption trials conducted with 70 g/m 3 EF for 4 h at 8 °C using 7.5, 15 and 30% pineapple loading ratios ( w/v ) indicated that loading ratio lower than 30% is necessary to achieve the LCt 99 values required to control D. brevipes . In a scaled up trial using 1 m 3 chamber, EF fumigation with 70 g/m 3 for 4 h at 8 °C with 20% pineapple loading ratio ( w/v ) resulted in a complete control of D. brevipes treated. There were no significant differences in hue values, sugar contents, firmness, and weight loss between EF-treated and untreated pineapples. Our results suggest that EF is a promising alternative to methyl bromide fumigation for the postharvest phytosanitary disinfection of D. brevipes in pineapples.

Chapter 22 - Chlorine. In: “Handbook of Toxicology of Chemical Warfare Agents, Third Edition”, Editor: Ramesh C. Gupta.

Chlorine gas is used widely by industry and as a disinfectant and bleach, and, due to its toxicity and ease of procurement, has been used as a chemical warfare agent. Chlorine is a strong oxidizer that hydrolyzes in water to form hydrochloric and hypochlorous acid. Upon chlorine inhalation, the respiratory tract is the predominant target organ in humans and animals as chlorine is a contact irritant. Exposure causes sensory irritation and pulmonary dysfunction, and at sufficiently high concentrations results in lung lesions and injury to other internal organs including the heart. Human and animal studies have shown that chlorine toxicity is influenced more by exposure concentration than duration, is gender-independent, and increases with age, cigarette smoking, and preexisting respiratory conditions such as asthma and airway hyperreactivity. Treatment is largely supportive, although animal studies are examining the utility of various compounds for chlorine-specific treatment based on its mechanism of action.

Healthy Buildings Guide for Small Businesses: A Quick Reference to Improve Indoor Air Quality (Restaurants Excluded)

Indoor air pollutant concentrations can be higher than those outdoors, putting occupants at risk. These pollutants come from a variety of sources: materials used to build and furnish indoor spaces, retail products and services, and occupants themselves. Ventilation, temperature, and humidity also affect indoor air quality. It is important to consider the documented benefits of healthy indoor environments at any time – not just during a public health crisis – and it is key to consider the indoor air quality where we do business as well as at home. Small businesses vary in size, services, products, ownership style, and building mechanical systems, yet all benefit from healthy indoor spaces for employees and customers. This guide provides steps, in conjunction with public health guidance, that small businesses can take to improve and maintain indoor air quality. Small businesses often have unique ownership structures – the building owner and business owner can be different parties – so this guide addresses both building and business owner action items. There are many ways to pursue healthy indoor air, including eliminating, minimizing, and/or controlling the contaminants we bring in, and removing or diluting any existing contaminants through ventilation, filtration, air cleaning, and/or disinfection. Best results are achieved through a comprehensive approach combining various strategies, including those discussed in this guide.

Crossing the Finish Line: Integration of Data-Driven Process Control for Maximization of Energy and Resource Efficiency in Advanced Water Resource Recovery Facilities

Improvements in process monitoring and control at water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) could result in reductions in electricity consumption, chemical inputs, and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as improved energy recovery. Many current WRRF data collection, monitoring, and control approaches use 20th century process monitoring and control systems, which require large design safety factors to ensure reliability in the absence of more advanced, precise controls. Implementation of more modern data-driven control tools could lead to more efficient operations that provide intrinsic reliability with better overall process performance at full-scale. This project (1) developed and demonstrated data-driven process controls at full-scale facilities for five promising WRRF process technologies that provide whole-plant approaches and offer substantial energy and resource recovery benefits, and (2) created a Machine Learning (ML) Toolkit and an implementation guide of new process control approaches that walks users through each step of the ML workflow and illustrates the steps through case study examples.

Non-Thermal Plasma as a Novel Strategy for Treating or Preventing Viral Infection and Associated Disease

Pathogenic viruses cause many human, animal, and plant diseases that are associated with substantial morbidity, mortality and socio-economic impact. Although effective strategies for combatting virus transmission and associated disease are available, global outbreaks of viral pathogens such as the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrate that there is still a critical need for new approaches that can be used to interrupt the chain of viral infection and mitigate virus-associated pathogenesis. Recent studies point to non-thermal plasma (NTP), a partly ionized gas comprised of a complex mixture of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species along with physical effectors, as the potential foundation for new antiviral approaches. A more thorough understanding of the antiviral properties and safety of NTP has stimulated explorations of NTP as the basis for treatments of viral diseases. The recently described immunomodulatory properties of NTP are also being evaluated for potential use in immunotherapies of viral diseases as well as in antiviral vaccination strategies. In this review, we present the current state-of-the-art in addition to compelling arguments that NTP merits further exploration for use in the prevention and management of viral infections and associated diseases.
