Structure redesign for improved dynamic response

The concepts of multivariable control design are used to redesign structures represented by lumped parameter models. When the mass is held constant, the changing of passive structural members is mathematically equivalent to an output feedback decentralized control problem. When the mass is also allowed to change, a generalization of the output feedback formulation is required. The design objective is to minimize the changes in the structure required to simultaneously satisfy inequality constraints on both the root-mean-square and absolute value of the dynamic response of each output. An alternative objective treated is to minimize the root-mean-square of the dynamic response subject to inequality constraints on the changes allowed in each structural member. Examples illustrate both procedures.

Free vibration and dynamic response analysis of spinning structures

The proposed effort involved development of numerical procedures for efficient solution of free vibration problems of spinning structures. An eigenproblem solution procedure, based on a Lanczos method employing complex arithmetic, was successfully developed. This task involved formulation of the numerical procedure, FORTRAN coding of the algorithm, checking and debugging of software, and implementation of the routine in the STARS program. A graphics package for the E/S PS 300 as well as for the Tektronix terminals was successfully generated and consists of the following special capabilities: (1) a dynamic response plot for the stresses and displacements as functions of time; and (2) a menu driven command module enabling input of data on an interactive basis. Finally, the STARS analysis capability was further improved by implementing the dynamic response analysis package that provides information on nodal deformations and element stresses as a function of time. A number of test cases were run utilizing the currently developed algorithm implemented in the STARS program and such results indicate that the newly generated solution technique is significantly more efficient than other existing similar procedures.

An alternative method of analysis for base accelerated dynamic response in NASTRAN

An alternative method of analysis to determine the dynamic response of structures subjected to base accelerations is presented. The method is exact as opposed to the approximate technique of using unusually large masses and loads to enforce desired base accelerations. This paper presents the relevant equations to motion, ALTERs for direct and modal frequency-, random- and transient-response rigid formats, and illustrative examples.

Application of concurrent processing to structural dynamic response computations

Described are the experiences gained from solving for the dynamic response of two simple structures on an experimental Multiple Instruction Multiple Data (MIMD) computer called the finite element machine. Introduced are MIMD computing concepts, describing how the concurrent algorithmic techniques implemented and giving results for the two example problems. The results show computational speedups of up to 7.83 using eight of the finite element machine processors and indicate that significant computational speedups are possible for large order structural computations.

Local dynamic responses of magnetic reconnection to three-dimensional perturbations in a laboratory plasma

The dynamic responses of magnetic reconnection to localized three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field perturbations imposed by a pair of figure-8-shaped coils are investigated in the Magnetic Reconnection Experiment (MRX) device. Both the magnetic field geometry and current sheet profiles are altered by external perturbations. For the case when the inductive electric field associated with these perturbations aligns with the preexisting reconnection electric field, O-type magnetic structures appear within an elongated current sheet. When these magnetic structures are ejected downstream at the speed close to the ion outflow velocity, the inductive electric field is enhanced considerably. Despite that the imposed perturbation amplitude is larger than 30% of the original reconnecting magnetic field, the overall reconnection process remains robust without current sheet disruptions. This technique to form O-type magnetic structures can serve as an additional experimental knob for future systematic laboratory investigations of 3D magnetic reconnection and related instabilities without disrupting two-dimensional current sheet.

Study of dynamic response of elastic space stations

Analytical procedure and the requisite computer programs compute the dynamic responses of two large elastic space stations. The linearized equations of motion are derived from lagranges equations. Then the normal modes of free vibration of the nonrotating space station are used to define the elastic degrees of freedom.

The dynamical responses of the thermosphere due to a geomagnetic storm

A theoretical model for the dynamic responses to geomagnetic storms in the thermosphere is derived from magnetohydrodynamic theory. The validity claim for this model is based on the assumption that the thermosphere behaves like an electrically conductive fluid. In order to test the proposed model, a numerical example is presented. Recommendations for improving the model are also offered.

Dynamic response and acoustic fatigue of stiffened composite structure

The results of acoustic fatigue and dynamic response tests performed on L-1011 graphite-epoxy (GrE) aileron and panel components are reported. The aileron featured glass microballoons between the GrE skins. Tests yielded random fatigue data from double and single cantilever coupons and modal data from impedance hammer and loudspeaker impulses. Numerical and sample test data were obtained on combined acoustic and shear loads, acoustic and thermal loads, random fatigue and damping of the integrally stiffened and secondary bonded panels. The fatigue data indicate a fatigue life beyond 10 million cycles. The acoustic data suggested that noise transmission could be enhanced in the integrally stiffened panels, which were more acoustic-fatigue resistant than were the secondary bonded panels.

Dynamic response and control of a jet-transport aircraft encountering a single-axis vortex

The dynamic responses of a jet-transport aircraft to two types of single-axis wind vortex encounters are studied. Aircraft attitude, flight path angle, and aerodynamic angle excursions are analyzed and dominating dynamic forcing effects are identified for each encounter. A simple departure-preventing LQR controller is designed to demonstrate the benefits of using automatic control to reduce the wind vortex hazard. A Proportional-Integral-Filter controller structure successfully regulates the critical parameters, roll angle, phi, and sideslip angle, beta, for the two different vortex encounters considered in this study.
