Response of two-phase droplets to intense electromagnetic radiation

The behavior of two-phase droplets subjected to high intensity radiation pulses is studied. Droplets are highly absorbing solids in weakly absorbing liquid medium. The objective of the study was to define heating thresholds required for causing explosive boiling and secondary atomization of the fuel droplet. The results point to mechanisms for energy storage and transport in two-phase systems.

Physical characteristics of interplanetary space

The Sun The properties of interplanetary space are determined, to a considerable extent, by the central body of the solar system-the Sun which is the source of powerful streams of corpuscular and electromagnetic radiation, and is responsible for the structure of the interplanetary magnetic fields. Many phenomena on the Earth are closely related to processes occurring on the Sun. The mechanism of this relationship is not yet fully understood, but it is clear that the solar wind, the corpuscular streams, and short-wave electromagnetic radiation of the Sun play a prominent role in these processes. Before describing the manifestations of Sun-Earth relationships, the elements of solar activity should be discussed.

Electromagnetic Time and Wavelength Domain Predictions for Accreting Binary Black Holes

Accreting massive binary black holes in gaseous environments are keymulti-messenger sources for the LISA mission. We will present some ofthe latest predictions of the observational signatures of accreting binary black holes across the electromagnetic spectrum from the fieldand provide some of our own. In particular, we will provide a briefsummary of the progress made in our group to understand these systemstheoretically using high-performance simulations of generalrelativistic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and dynamic spacetimes.Simulating these systems realistically is challenging asradiation-coupled MHD must be considered over large dynamic ranges inspace and time. Constraining our view to the circumbinary disk regionfirst, we will show how the evolution duration, accretion disk size, mass ratio, and thermodynamics model affect the structure andvariability of the accretion flow. We particularly emphasize how theseparameters influence the over-density feature, or "lump", which orbitsthe binary near the edge of the cavity, since it is responsible formost of the electromagnetic emission's variability---a key signatureof a system being a binary. Extending to smaller length scales, wewill report on simulations following accretion all the down to theevent horizons so that we may begin to investigate how black hole spinaffects mini-disk dynamics, accretion rate, and jet power. We willalso report on our radiative transfer predictions for how black holespin alters the spectral energy distribution of these systems.Wrapping up, we will itemize the remaining key theoreticaltechnologies and directions needed to be accomplished to betterunderstand these sources, and assess strategies for searching for themin the coming decade.

Near Space Tracking of the EM Phenomena Associated with the Main Earthquakes

Searching for electromagnetic (EM) phenomena originating in the Earth's crust prior to major earthquakes (M>5) are the object of this exploratory study. We present the idea of a possible relationship between: (1) electro-chemical and thermodynamic processes in the Earth's crust and (2) ionic enhancement of the atmosphere/ionosphere with tectonic stress and earthquake activity. The major source of these signals are proposed to originate from electromagnetic phenomenon which are responsible for these observed pre-seismic processes, such as, enhanced IR emission, also born as thermal anomalies, generation of long wave radiation, light emission caused by ground-to-air electric discharges, Total Electron Content (TEC) ionospheric anomalies and ionospheric plasma variations. The source of these data will include: (i) ionospheric plasma perturbations data from the recently launched DEMETER mission and currently available TEC/GPS network data; (ii) geomagnetic data from ORSTED and CHAMP; (iii) Thermal infra-red (TIR) transients mapped by the polar orbiting (NOAA/AVHRR, MODIS) and (iv) geosynchronous weather satellites measurements of GOES, METEOSAT. This approach requires continues observations and data collecting, in addition to both ground and space based monitoring over selected regions in order to investigate the various techniques for recording possible anomalies. During the space campaign emphasis will be on IR emission, obtained from TIR (thermal infrared) satellites, that records land/sea surface temperature anomalies and changes in the plasma and total electron content (TEC) of the ionosphere that occur over areas of potential earthquake activity.

RFID-Enabled Angular Position Sensing System

An angular position sensing system includes a first support with ring-shaped elements disposed thereon and spaced apart from one another in a curvilinear arrangement. Each ring-shaped element includes an electrically-conductive ring and an RFID integrated circuit electrically coupled to its electrically-conductive ring. A second support has an antenna coupled thereto that defines an electrically-conductive path commensurate in size and shape to at least a portion of the electrically-conductive ring. An interrogator transmits a signal to the antenna wherein electric current is generated along the antenna's electrically-conductive path and electromagnetic energy emanates from the antenna. Any ring-shaped element and its RFID integrated circuit energized by the electromagnetic energy generates in response a data transmission for receipt by the interrogator. A processor coupled to the interrogator derives information related to an angular position of one of the first support and second support using the data transmission.

Significant and Variable Linear Polarization During the Prompt Optical Flash of GRB 160625B

Measurement of polarized light provides a direct probe of magnetic fields in collimated outflows (jets) of relativistic plasma from accreting stellar-mass black holes at cosmological distances. These outflows power brief and intense flashes of prompt gamma-rays known as Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), followed by longer-lived afterglow radiation detected across the electromagnetic spectrum. Rapid-response polarimetric observations of newly discovered GRBs have probed the initial afterglow phase. Linear polarization degrees as high as Π∼30% are detected minutes after the end of the prompt GRB emission, consistent with a stable, globally ordered magnetic field permeating the jet at large distances from the central source. In contrast, optical and gamma-ray observations during the prompt phase led to discordant and often controversial results, and no definitive conclusions on the origin of the prompt radiation or the configuration of the magnetic field could be derived. Here we report the detection of linear polarization of a prompt optical flash that accompanied the extremely energetic and long-lived prompt gamma-ray emission from GRB 160625B. Our measurements probe the structure of the magnetic field at an early stage of the GRB jet, closer to the central source, and show that the prompt GRB phase is produced via fast cooling synchrotron radiation in a large-scale magnetic field advected from the central black hole and distorted from dissipation processes within the jet.

Single element magnetic suspension actuator

The invention, a single element magnetic suspension actuator with bidirectional force capability along a single axis, includes an electromagnet and a nonmagnetic suspended element. A permanent magnet mounted on the suspended element interacts with a magnetic field established by the electromagnet to produce bidirectional forces in response to a variable force command voltage V (sub FC) applied to the electromagnet. A sensor measures the position of the suspended element on the single axis which is a function of force command voltage V (sub FC).

Cup waveguide antenna with integrated polarizer and OMT

A cup waveguide antenna with integrated polarizer and OMT for simultaneously communicating left and right hand circularly polarized electromagnetic waves is adjustable to obtain efficient propagation and reception of electromagnetic waves. The antenna includes a circular waveguide having an orthomode transducer utilizing first and second pins longitudinally spaced apart and oriented orthogonally with respect to each other. Six radially-oriented adjustable polarizer screws extend from the exterior to the interior of the waveguide. A septum intermediate the first and second pins is aligned with the first pin. Adjustment of the polarizer screws enables maximized propagation of and/or response to left hand circularly polarized electromagnetic waves by the first pin while simultaneously enabling maximized propagation of and/or response to right hand circularly polarized electromagnetic waves by the second pin.

Electromagnetically-tracked free-mass gravitational wave antennas

The response to a gravitational wave of two free masses whose relative motion is monitored with an electromagnetic tracking signal is derived. The results indicate a two-feature signature in one-way data and a three-feature signature in two-way data. The effect is applied to gravitational wave experiments using laser interferometers, spacecraft Doppler tracking, planetary ranging, and pulsar timing analysis. Actual results are presented from spacecraft Doppler experiments and from pulsar timing data analysis, with new upper limits being set on a possible cosmic gravitational wave background via the pulsar data.

Electromagnetic Compatibility Analysis Group VA-H3

During the eight weeks working at NASA, I was fortunate enough to work with the Expendable Launch Vehicle's (ELV) Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Team, who is responsible for the evaluation and analysis of any EMI risk an ELV mission might face. This group of people concern themselves with practically any form of electromagnetic interference that may risk the safety of a rocket, a mission, or even people. Taking this into consideration, the group investigates natural forms of interference, such as lightning, to manmade interferences, such as antennas.

Electromagnetic wave energy converter

Electromagnetic wave energy is converted into electric power with an array of mutually insulated electromagnetic wave absorber elements each responsive to an electric field component of the wave as it impinges thereon. Each element includes a portion tapered in the direction of wave propagation to provide a relatively wideband response spectrum. Each element includes an output for deriving a voltage replica of the electric field variations intercepted by it. Adjacent elements are positioned relative to each other so that an electric field subsists between adjacent elements in response to the impinging wave. The electric field results in a voltage difference between adjacent elements that is fed to a rectifier to derive dc output power.

Optimum detection of an optical image on a photoelectric surface.

The image-detecting performance of an optimum counting detector is compared with that of a threshold detector and that of a detector basing its decisions on the total number of photoelectrons from a finite area of the image. The illuminance of the image is assumed to have a Gaussian spatial distribution. The optimum detector works with the pristine datum (and not with the photoelectric response) which is the spatiotemporal electromagnetic field at the aperture of the observing optical instrument. It is shown that little is to be gained by using details of the illuminance distribution beyond the crude knowledge of its breadth as embodied in a simple counter of emitted photoelectrons. All three detectors exhibit accordingly about the same reliability.
