Photon-scattering cross sections of H2 and He measured with synchrotron radiation

Total (elastic + inelastic) differential photon-scattering cross sections have been measured for H2 gas and for He, using an X-ray beam. Absolute measured cross sections agree with theory within the probable errors. Relative cross sections (normalized to theory at large S) agree to better than 1% with theoretical values calculated from wave functions that include the effect of electron-electron Coulomb correlation, but the data deviate significantly from theoretical independent-particle (e.g., Hartree-Fock) results. The ratios of measured absolute He cross sections to those of H2, at any given S, also agree to better than 1% with theoretical He-to-H2 cross-section ratios computed from correlated wave functions. It appears that photon scattering constitutes a very promising tool for probing electron correlation in light atoms and molecules. The degree of polarization of the synchrotron radiation beam has been measured by rotating the scattering plane about the beam axis; results are compared with theory.

Atomic electron correlation in nuclear electron capture

The effect of electron-electron Coulomb correlation on orbital-electron capture by the nucleus has been treated by the multiconfigurational Hartree-Fock approach. The theoretical Be-7 L/K capture ratio is found to be 0.086, and the Ar-37 M/L ratio, 0.102. Both ratios are smaller than the independent-particle predictions. Measurements exist for the Ar M/L ratio, and agreement between theory and experiment is excellent.

Sum rules and static local-field corrections of electron liquids in two and three dimensions

The dielectric functions of electron liquids which take into account short-range electron-electron correlations via the static local-field corrections are examined in the light of the frequency-moment sum rules. The formation is given for degenerate as well as classical electron liquids in arbitrary (d) spatial dimensions, which is suitable for comparison between the two- and three-dimensional cases. By using the virial equations of state it is shown that such dielectric functions cannot satisfy the compressibility sum rule and the third-frequency-moment sum rule simultaneously. In the degenerate case, the plasmon, single-pair, and multipair contributions to the sum rules are analyzed, and the reason for this incompatibility is discussed.

Interchannel Coupling in the Photoionization of Atoms and Ions in the X-Ray Range

To understand how this interchannel coupling, so important in neutral atoms, applies to positive ions, a research program has been initiated to deal with this question, i.e., a program to quantify the effects of interchannel coupling in ionic photoionization, thereby assessing existing photoionization data bases in the x-ray region. To accomplish this task, we have employed the Relativistic Random-Phase-Approximation (RRPA) methodology which includes significant aspects of electron-electron correlation, including interchannel coupling. The RRPA methodology has been found to produce excellent agreement with experiment for neutral Ne at photon energies in the 1 keV range.

Microscopic Modeling of Intersubband Resonances in InAs/AlSb Quantum Wells

Linear absorption spectra from intersubband resonance in InAs/AlSb quantum wells are analyzed theoretically using the intersubband semiconductor Bloch equation approach. Our model goes beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation and treats particle-particle correlations under the second Born approximation. Electron-electron and -LO phonon scatterings from such a treatment describe intrinsic line broadening to the intersubband resonance. Electron subbands are determined self-consistently with a spurious-state-free 8-band k.p Hamiltonian under the envelope function approximation. To compare with experimental measurements, we also included line broadening due to electron-interface roughness scattering. Excellent agreement was achieved for temperature-dependent absorption spectra in the mid-infrared frequency range, after taking into careful account the interplay of material parameters, nonparabolicity in bandstructure, and many-body effects.

Polarizabilites and Rydberg States in the Presence of a Debye Potential

Polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities, alpha(1), beta(1),gamma(1), alpha(2), beta(2),gamma(2), alpha(3), beta(3),gamma(3), delta and epsilon of hydrogenic systems have been calculated by Drachman. We have now calculated these quantities by using pseudostates for the S. P. D and F states. All of them converge very fast as the number of terms in the pseudostates is increased, and are essentially independent of the nonlinear parameters. All the results are in good agreement with the results obtained by Drachman. except for delta, which is of the third-order in perturbation formalism. We have calculated Rydberg states of He for high N and L. The effective potential is -alpha(sub 1)/x(exp 4)+{6 * Beta(sub 1) -alpha(sub 2)/x(exp6), where x is the distance of the outer electron from the nucleus. The exchange and electron-electron correlations are unimportant because the outer electron is far away from the nucleus. This implies that the conventional variational calculations are not necessary. The results agree well with the results of Drachman. We have generalized this approach in the presence of a Debye potential.
