Probing nuclear quadrupole deformation from correlation of elliptic flow and transverse momentum in heavy ion collisions

In heavy ion collisions, elliptic flow v2 and radial flow, characterized by eventwise average transverse momentum [p T ], are related to the shape and size of the overlap region, which are sensitive to the shape of colliding atomic nuclei. The Pearson correlation coefficient between v 2 and [p T ], ρ 2 , was found to be particularly sensitive to the quadrupole deformation parameter β that is traditionally measured in low energy experiments. Built on earlier insight that the prolate deformation β>0 reduces the ρ 2 in ultracentral collisions (UCC), we show that the prolate deformation β<0 enhances the value of ρ 2 . As β>0 and β<0 are the two extremes of triaxiality, the strength and sign of v 2 2 -[pT] correlation can be used to provide valuable information on the triaxiality of the nucleus. Our study provide further arguments for using the hydrodynamic flow as a precision tool to directly image the deformation of the atomic nuclei at extremely short timescale (<10 -24 s).

Measurement of the production and elliptic flow of (anti)nuclei in Xe-Xe collisions at √sNN = 5.44 TeV

Measurements of (anti)deuteron and (anti) 3He production in the rapidity range |𝑦|<0.5 as a function of the transverse momentum and event multiplicity in Xe-Xe collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair of √𝑠𝑁⁢𝑁=5.44 TeV are presented. The coalescence parameters 𝐵2 and 𝐵3 are measured as a function of the transverse momentum per nucleon. The ratios between (anti)deuteron and (anti) 3He yields and those of (anti)protons and pions are reported as a function of the mean charged-particle multiplicity density and compared with two implementations of the statistical hadronization model and with coalescence predictions. The elliptic flow of (anti)deuterons is measured for the first time in Xe-Xe collisions and shows features similar to those already observed in Pb-Pb collisions, i.e., the mass ordering at low transverse momentum and the meson-baryon grouping at intermediate transverse momentum. The production of nuclei is particularly sensitive to the chemical freeze-out temperature of the system created in the collision, which is extracted from a grand-canonical-ensemble-based thermal fit, performed for the first time including light nuclei along with light-flavor hadrons in Xe-Xe collisions. The extracted chemical freeze-out temperature 𝑇chem=(154.2±1.1) MeV in Xe-Xe collisions is similar to that observed in Pb-Pb collisions and close to the crossover temperature predicted by lattice quantum chromodynamics calculations.

Measurements of the Elliptic and Triangular Azimuthal Anisotropies in Central He 3 + Au , d + Au and p + Au Collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

The elliptic (v 2 ) and triangular (v 3 ) azimuthal anisotropy coefficients in central 3He + Au, d + Au, and p + Au collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV are measured as a function of transverse momentum (P T ) at midrapidity (|n| < 0.9) via the azimuthal angular correlation between two particles both at |n| < 0.9 while the v 2 (P T ) values depend on the colliding systems, the v 3 (P T ) values are system independent within the uncertainties, suggesting an influence on eccentricity from subnucleonic fluctuations in these small-sized systems. Furthermore, these results also provide stringent constraints for the hydrodynamic modeling of these systems.

First Measurement Using Elliptically Polarized Photons of the Double-Polarization Observable E for γ p → p π 0 and γ p → n π +

We report the measurement of the helicity asymmetry E for the p π 0 and n π + final states using, for the first time, an elliptically polarized photon beam in combination with a longitudinally polarized target at the Crystal Ball experiment at MAMI. The results agree very well with data that were taken with a circularly polarized photon beam, showing that it is possible to simultaneously measure polarization observables that require linearly (e.g., G ) and circularly polarized photons (e.g., E ) and a longitudinally polarized target. The new data cover a photon energy range 270–1400 MeV for the p π 0 final state (230–842 MeV for the n π + final state) and the full range of pion polar angles, θ , providing the most precise measurement of the observable E . A moment analysis gives a clear observation of the p η cusp in the p π 0 final state. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Observation of Enhanced Long-Range Elliptic Anisotropies Inside High-Multiplicity Jets in p p Collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for collective effects inside jets produced in proton-proton collisions is performed via correlation measurements of charged particles using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The analysis uses data collected at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 . Jets are reconstructed with the anti- k T algorithm with a distance parameter of 0.8 and are required to have transverse momentum greater than 550 GeV and pseudorapidity | η jet | < 1.6 . Two-particle correlations among the charged particles within the jets are studied as functions of the particles’ azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity separations ( Δ ϕ * and Δ η * ) in a jet coordinate basis, where particles’ η * , ϕ * are defined relative to the direction of the jet. The correlation functions are studied in classes of in-jet charged-particle multiplicity up to N ch j ≈ 100 . Fourier harmonics are extracted from long-range azimuthal correlation functions to characterize azimuthal anisotropy for | Δ η * | > 2 . For low- N ch j jets, the long-range elliptic anisotropic harmonic, v 2 * , is observed to decrease with N ch j . This trend is well described by Monte Carlo event generators. However, a rising trend for v 2 * emerges at N ch j ≳ 80 , hinting at a possible onset of collective behavior, which is not reproduced by the models tested. This observation yields new insights into the dynamics of jet evolution in the vacuum. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Second harmonic Bessel-Gauss beam shaping with elliptic axicon aberrations

The second harmonic (SH) of an axicon generated Bessel-Gauss beam is created through the nonlinear interaction of photons with a crystal, resulting in the energy doubling of the output photons. In this work, we show experimentally that in addition to frequency doubling, the SH of Bessel-Gauss beams under asymmetric aberrations from an elliptic axicon exhibit intriguing beam formation. Particularly, the central region of the SH beam profile is composed of two central spots of various geometries surrounded by nested ellipses; one of which is the configuration of two central gamma dots with similar radius knotted by nested ellipses for a zeroth-order Bessel-Gauss pump. These SH beams consistently maintain their spatial profile throughout propagation, reminiscing the behavior of screw dislocations in wave patterns. Our numerical simulations produce beam dynamics consistent with that of experiments and further implicate the remarkable interweaving of bright spots with dark vortices. This is especially noticeable when the beams dynamically oscillate along the optical axis, resulting in the genesis of spatially polarized beams with a knotted framework. The insights gained from our study establish a novel paradigm for exploring interactions of Bessel-like beams with vortex dynamics. This, in turn, has the potential to spark innovations in optical applications, fostering new methodologies to harness and manipulate complex light structures. Our experimental findings could spur new methods of generating logical states of light and new opportunities for material processing control. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Investigation of an octupole breathing mode of 208 Pb as a resolution to the elliptical-to-triangular azimuthal anisotropy puzzle in ultracentral relativistic heavy ion collisions

Relativistic heavy ion collisions provide a unique opportunity to probe the nuclear structure by taking an instantaneous snapshot of the colliding nuclei and converting it into momentum anisotropies of final emitted hadrons. A long-standing puzzle of too large a ratio of the elliptical-to-triangular (𝑣 2 -to-𝑣 3 ) anisotropies in ultracentral 208 Pb + 208 Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) cannot be solved simply by hydrodynamic simulations with initial conditions containing the spherical or certain deformed shape of 208 Pb. Here, in this Letter, using the iEBE-VISHNU relativistic viscous hydrodynamic hybrid model simulations with the TR⁢ENTo initial condition, we show that a dynamic octupole deformation—a shape-breathing mode of 208 Pb —could potentially solve the 𝑣2-to-𝑣3 puzzle and simultaneously describe the 𝑣 3 ⁡{4} data measured in experiment. Our results highlight the unique capability of capturing transient collective properties of nuclei on yoctosecond (10 −24 s) timescales, unfeasible with low-energy nuclear reactions.

Abstract We show that local weak solutions to anisotropic elliptic equations with bounded and measurable coefficients, whose prototype is are continuous. Our analysis exploits a particular intrinsic geometry that, within the limiting case on the exponents, allows for a reduction of the oscillation of the solution.

Measurement of non-prompt ${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$-meson elliptic flow in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV

The elliptic flow (v 2 ) of D 0 mesons from beauty-hadron decays (non-prompt D 0 was measured in midcentral (30–50%) Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The D 0 mesons were reconstructed at midrapidity $(|y|<0.8)$ from their hadronic decay D 0 →$K^-\pi^+$, in the transverse momentum interval $2< p_{\textrm{T}} < 12$ GeV/c. The result indicates a positive v 2 for non-prompt D 0 mesons with a significance of 2.7σ. The non-prompt D 0 -meson v 2 is lower than that of prompt non-strange D mesons with 3.2σ significance in $2< p_\textrm{T} < 8~\textrm{GeV}/c$, and compatible with the v 2 of beauty-decay electrons. Theoretical calculations of beauty-quark transport in a hydrodynamically expanding medium describe the measurement within uncertainties.

Imaging elliptically polarized infrared near-fields on nanoparticles by strong-field dissociation of functional surface groups

Abstract We investigate the strong-field ion emission from the surface of isolated silica nanoparticles aerosolized from an alcoholic solution, and demonstrate the applicability of the recently reported near-field imaging at 720 nm [Rupp et al., Nat. Comm., 10(1):4655, 2019] to longer wavelength (2 $$\mu $$ μ m) and polarizations with arbitrary ellipticity. Based on the experimental observations, we discuss the validity of a previously introduced semi-classical model, which is based on near-field driven charge generation by a Monte-Carlo approach and classical propagation. We furthermore clarify the role of the solvent in the surface composition of the nanoparticles in the interaction region. We find that upon injection of the nanoparticles into the vacuum, the alcoholic solvent evaporates on millisecond time scales, and that the generated ions originate predominantly from covalent bonds with the silica surface rather than from physisorbed solvent molecules. These findings have important implications for the development of future theoretical models of the strong-field ion emission from silica nanoparticles, and the application of near-field imaging and reaction dynamics of functional groups on isolated nanoparticles. Elliptically-Contoured Tensor-variate Distributions with Application to Image Learning

Statistical analysis of tensor-valued data has largely used the tensor-variate normal (TVN) distribution that may be inadequate for data arising from distributions with heavier or lighter tails. We study a general family of elliptically contoured (EC) TV distributions and derive its characterizations, moments, marginal, and conditional distributions. We describe procedures for maximum likelihood estimation from data that are (1) uncorrelated draws from an EC distribution, (2) from a scale mixture of the TVN distribution, and (3) from an underlying but unknown EC distribution, for which we extend Tyler’s robust estimator. A detailed simulation study highlights the benefits of choosing an EC distribution over the TVN for heavier-tailed data. We develop TV classification rules using discriminant analysis and EC errors and show that they better predict cats and dogs from images in the Animal Faces-HQ dataset than the TVN-based rules. A novel tensor-on-tensor regression and TV analysis of variance (TANOVA) framework under EC errors is also demonstrated to better characterize gender, age, and ethnic origin than the usual TVN-based TANOVA in the celebrated labeled faces of the wild dataset.

Frequency dependence of BCS and residual resistance using multi-mode measurement of nitrogen-doped single-cell elliptical cavities

Various cavity surface treatments have been found to significantly improve cavity quality factor, Q0, with one such treatment being nitrogen-doping (N-doping). N-doped 1.3 GHz cavities were the first found to exhibit anti-Q slope, the increase of Q0 with accelerating field, Eacc. However, even with the use of the same N-doping recipes, this anti-Q slope behavior has not been realized in sub-GHz frequency cavities. In this study, we measured the Q0 and surface resistance, RS, of our N-doped, single-cell, elliptical cavity for both the 644 MHz fundamental mode (FM) and 1.45 GHz higher-order mode (HOM). As a result of multi-mode measurements, the BCS and residual resistances, the temperature-dependent and temperature-in-dependent RF surface resistances, could be determined without the influence of cavity-to-cavity surface treatment variations. We will discuss the frequency-dependent behaviors of the BCS and residual resistances.

Analysis of the elliptic integrable non-linear system in IOTA using tracking of a single electron

Integrable nonlinear lattices that can be realized in practical accelerators are of great interest, as they offer the potential to support high-intensity beams via Landau damping of collective instabilities. One such system, based on an elliptic potential, has been extensively studied at the IOTA storage ring at Fermilab. The analysis of strongly nonlinear dynamics with multi-particle bunches is challenging due to the rapid decoherence of kicked beams. IOTA has the capability to track single electrons using linear multi-anode photomultiplier tubes for simultaneously measuring transverse coordinates and arrival times of synchrotron-radiation pulses. This technology enables the full reconstruction of turn-by-turn positions and momenta in all three planes for a single particle. Using this apparatus, we measured the dependence of small-amplitude tunes on the strength of the nonlinear magnet, as well as tunes dependence on oscillations amplitudes.

An examination of different representations of the electrostatic field and potential of an intense relativistic electron beam in a cylindrical conductor and their implications on foil focusing of an elliptical beam

Knowledge of the electrostatic field and potential of an intense relativistic electron beam (IREB) in a cylindrical conductor is essential for understanding the transport of IREBs including the interaction of a grounded conducting foil with the beam. Different representations of the electrostatic field or potential exist in the literature. The different representations are compared and an extension to foil focusing of elliptical beams is discussed.

Computational Fluid Dynamic Simulation for Electrolyte Flow in Horizontal EP of Nb SRF Elliptical Cavities

An electrolyte flow velocity on an electropolishingsurface affects a material removal rate where higherremoval is observed with a higher velocity of theelectrolyte. In horizontal EP (HEP) of an ellipticalcavity, an electrolyte flow near the equator positionmight remain slow and responsible for a lowerremoval compared to that on the iris and beam pipepositions. In order to understand the flow dynamicon an elliptical cavity surface in the horizontal EPprocess, a computational fluid dynamic simulationwas conducted. This study was conducted on 1.3GHz cavity with different cathodes and acid flowrates. Final aim of the study is to improve the flowuniformity to attain uniform removal especially inmulticell cavities.

Towards the first high-Q treatments for 800 MHz 5-cell elliptical cavities

High-efficiency, high-velocity, sub-GHz elliptical superconducting RF cavities are a critical enabling technology for multiple upcoming accelerator development projects such as for the Powerful Energy Recovery Linac for Experiments (PERLE), and for the Future Circular Collider s (FCC) Booster, and future realizations of its Collider ring. The ambitious quality factor and gradient requirements of these applications require strong SRF R&D programs aimed at developing and optimizing advanced surface processing techniques for 800 MHz cavities. We report the initiation of the 800 MHz R&D program at Fermilab, with the aim of developing high-performance cavities compatible with PERLE and FCC applications.

First elliptical cavity fabricated with metallographic polishing

The development of an easy and inexpensive Nb sheet preparation process, based on metallographic polishing, has been presented earlier [1, 2]. The aim is to remove the damage layer caused by the rolling process on the sheet in order to reduce the length of surface treatment on completed cavities. The process has been applied on a QPR sample and tested in RF, without any surface chemistry. Its surface resistance is about 4 times lower than the EP baseline at 414 MHz, 2 K [3]. The first elliptical cavity based on this principle has been produced at KEK, starting with large polished sheets developed in collaboration between IJCLAB, and the company LAMPLAN. We present its 1st RF test at KEK, with a HF rinsing and a recrystallization treatment at 600C for 10h, without any chemical etching at first. References: *1: C. Antoine and R.
