Towards Efficient Alternating Current Optimal Power Flow Analysis on Graphical Processing Units

We present a solution of sparse ACOPF analysis on GPU. In particular, we discuss the performance bottlenecks and detail our efforts to accelerate the linear solver, a core component of ACOPF that dominates the computational time. ACOPF solutions of two large-scale systems, synthetic Northeast (25,000 buses) and Eastern (70,000 buses) \cite{birchfield2017tamu-cases} on GPU show promising speed-up compared to CPU based solution using a state-of-the-art solver. To our knowledge, this is the first result demonstrating acceleration of sparse ACOPF on GPUs.

Review of heat transfer enhancement techniques in two-phase flows for highly efficient and sustainable cooling

We show that two-phase internal flow is ubiquitous to many systems due to its ability to transfer large amounts of heat effectively. Recent advances motivated by sustainability have pushed towards augmenting the heat transfer between the tube and the two-phase working fluid. Augmenting heat transfer in two-phase flows enables process intensification, and compactness leading to reduced cost and material consumption. This review investigates the effect of heat transfer enhancement techniques on different fluids including R134a, R407C, R22, etc … The techniques are categorized into passive and active and focus on durable enhancement methods which do not include surface structuring or coating. Passive techniques utilize geometrical and surface modifications to induce better mixing. Several passive techniques are analyzed including fins, inserts, and more. In analyzing these techniques, the effect of changing geometric parameters is studied, and the limitations are highlighted. Further, active techniques that enable heat transfer enhancement through applying power are also investigated. Electrohydrodynamic approaches are analyzed and compared to passive techniques. Additionally, the implications of heat exchange enhancement in the context of global energy are discussed. An energy analysis discretized by the use sector is conducted, with an emphasis on predicting the future potential for renewable and sustainable development. Moreover, although active approaches provide the highest heat transfer enhancement, due to implementation difficulties, passive techniques are more frequently adopted. The review ends with discussion of next-generation heat exchangers which will rely more on additive manufacturing due to its flexibility and reduced cost per part as the technology matures.

Repeatable and reproducible measurements of myocardial oxidative metabolism, blood flow and external efficiency using {sup 11}C-acetate PET

Background: Non-invasive approaches to investigate myocardial efficiency can help track the progression of heart failure (HF). This study evaluates the repeatability and reproducibility of {sup 11}C-acetate positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of oxidative metabolism. Methods and results: Dynamic {sup 11}C-acetate PET scans were performed at baseline and followup (47 ± 22 days apart) in 20 patients with stable HF with reduced ejection fraction. Two observers blinded to patients’ clinical data used FlowQuant{sup ®} to evaluate test–retest repeatability, as well as intra- and inter-observer reproducibility of {sup 11}C-acetate tracer uptake and clearance rates, for the measurement of myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO{sub 2}), myocardial external efficiency (MEE), work metabolic index (WMI), and myocardial blood flow. Reproducibility and repeatability were evaluated using intra-class-correlation (ICC) and Bland–Altman coefficient-of-repeatability (CR). Test–retest correlations and repeatability were better for MEE and WMI compared to MVO{sub 2}. All intra- and inter-observer correlations were excellent (ICC = 0.95-0.99) and the reproducibility values (CR = 3%-6%) were significantly lower than the test–retest repeatability values (22%-54%, P < 0.001). Repeatability was improved for all parameters using a newer PET–computed tomography (CT) scanner compared to older PET-only instrumentation. Conclusion: {sup 11}C-acetate PET measurements of WMI and MEE exhibited excellent test–retest repeatability and operator reproducibility. Newer PET–CT scanners may be preferred for longitudinal tracking of cardiac efficiency. Impact of turbulence modeling on numerical accuracy and efficiency of compressible flow simulations

Discussed is the numerical implementation of turbulence models used in viscous compressible flow simulations and their performance described with respect to numerical accuracy, efficiency and stability. The basic approach utilizes the Reynolds-averaged compressible Navier-Stokes equations in which the Reynolds stresses and heat fluxes are mathematically modeled by suitable turbulence models. The turbulence models investigated include zero-, one-, and two-equation eddy viscosity models. The flow fields investigated include theoretical and supersonic flows about two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies. Discussions concerning the numerical implementation of models include differencing procedures and boundary conditions used to assume numerical stability and accuracy. Numerical performance is also evaluated by comparing computations with experimental results.

Three-Dimensional Navier-Stokes Method with Two-Equation Turbulence Models for Efficient Numerical Simulation of Hypersonic Flows

A new computational efficient 3-D compressible Reynolds-averaged implicit Navier-Stokes method with advanced two equation turbulence models for high speed flows is presented. All convective terms are modeled using an entropy satisfying higher-order Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) scheme based on implicit upwind flux-difference split approximations and arithmetic averaging procedure of primitive variables. This method combines the best features of data management and computational efficiency of space marching procedures with the generality and stability of time dependent Navier-Stokes procedures to solve flows with mixed supersonic and subsonic zones, including streamwise separated flows. Its robust stability derives from a combination of conservative implicit upwind flux-difference splitting with Roe's property U to provide accurate shock capturing capability that non-conservative schemes do not guarantee, alternating symmetric Gauss-Seidel 'method of planes' relaxation procedure coupled with a three-dimensional two-factor diagonal-dominant approximate factorization scheme, TVD flux limiters of higher-order flux differences satisfying realizability, and well-posed characteristic-based implicit boundary-point a'pproximations consistent with the local characteristics domain of dependence. The efficiency of the method is highly increased with Newton Raphson acceleration which allows convergence in essentially one forward sweep for supersonic flows. The method is verified by comparing with experiment and other Navier-Stokes methods. Here, results of adiabatic and cooled flat plate flows, compression corner flow, and 3-D hypersonic shock-wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction flows are presented. The robust 3-D method achieves a better computational efficiency of at least one order of magnitude over the CNS Navier-Stokes code. It provides cost-effective aerodynamic predictions in agreement with experiment, and the capability of predicting complex flow structures in complex geometries with good accuracy.

Chance-Constrained AC Optimal Power Flow: Reformulations and Efficient Algorithms

Higher levels of renewable electricity generation increase uncertainty in power system operation. To ensure secure system operation, new tools that account for this uncertainty are required. Here, in this paper, we adopt a chance-constrained AC optimal power flow formulation, which guarantees that generation, power flows and voltages remain within their bounds with a pre-defined probability. We then discuss different chance-constraint reformulations and solution approaches for the problem. Additionally, we first discuss an analytical reformulation based on partial linearization, which enables us to obtain a tractable representation of the optimization problem. We then provide an efficient algorithm based on an iterative solution scheme which alternates between solving a deterministic AC OPF problem and assessing the impact of uncertainty. This more flexible computational framework enables not only scalable implementations, but also alternative chance-constraint reformulations. In particular, we suggest two sample based reformulations that do not require any approximation or relaxation of the AC power flow equations.

Vectorization of a particle simulation method for hypersonic rarefied flow

An efficient particle simulation technique for hypersonic rarefied flows is presented at an algorithmic and implementation level. The implementation is for a vector computer architecture, specifically the Cray-2. The method models an ideal diatomic Maxwell molecule with three translational and two rotational degrees of freedom. Algorithms are designed specifically for compatibility with fine grain parallelism by reducing the number of data dependencies in the computation. By insisting on this compatibility, the method is capable of performing simulation on a much larger scale than previously possible. A two-dimensional simulation of supersonic flow over a wedge is carried out for the near-continuum limit where the gas is in equilibrium and the ideal solution can be used as a check on the accuracy of the gas model employed in the method. Also, a three-dimensional, Mach 8, rarefied flow about a finite-span flat plate at a 45 degree angle of attack was simulated. It utilized over 10 to the 7th particles carried through 400 discrete time steps in less than one hour of Cray-2 CPU time. This problem was chosen to exhibit the capability of the method in handling a large number of particles and a true three-dimensional geometry.

An efficient, direct finite difference method for computing sound propagation in arbitrarily shaped two-dimensional and axisymmetric ducts without flow

An efficient, direct finite difference method is presented for computing sound propagation in non-stepped two-dimensional and axisymmetric ducts of arbitrarily varying cross section without mean flow. The method is not restricted by axial variation of acoustic impedance of the duct wall linings. The non-uniform two-dimensional or axisymmetric duct is conformally mapped numerically into a rectangular or cylindrical computational domain using a new procedure based on a method of fast direct solution of the Cauchy-Riemann equations. The resulting Helmholtz equation in the computational domain is separable. The solution to the governing equation and boundary conditions is expressed as a linear combination of fundamental solutions. The fundamental solutions are computed only once for each duct shape by means of the fast direct cyclic reduction method for the discrete solution of separable elliptic equations. Numerical results for several examples are presented to show the applicability and efficiency of the method.

Binder-free thin graphite fiber mat sandwich electrode architectures for energy-efficient vanadium redox flow batteries

Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) are emerging as the preferred energy storage solution for long-duration energy storage (LDES) and grid-scale load levelling. In this study, we report a novel binder-free sandwich electrode architecture consisting of a thin layer (6–12 mg cm –2 ) of thermally activated graphite felt mat (TGFM) sandwiched between thin carbon papers (TCP-TGFM-TCP). This electrode architecture substantially reduced the polarization (I-V) resistance of the VRFB by 23 %, resulting in a current density increase from 340 mA cm –2 at 1 V for the thermally activated graphite felt (TGF) electrode to 470 mA cm –2 at 1 V, and an energy efficiency of 80 % at 100 mA cm –2 is realized.

High efficiency continuous-flow production of radioisotopes

Methods and systems are provided for continuous-flow production of radioisotopes with high specific activity. Radioisotopes with high specific activity produced according to the methods described are also provided. The methods can include causing a liquid capture matrix to contact a target containing a target nuclide; irradiating the target with radiation, ionizing radiation, particles, or a combination thereof to produce the radionuclides that are ejected from the target and into the capture matrix; and causing the liquid capture matrix containing the radionuclides to flow from the target to recover the capture matrix containing the radionuclides with high specific activity. The methods are suitable for the production of a variety of radionuclides. For example, in some aspects the target nuclide is 237Np, and the radionuclide is 238Np that decays to produce 238Pu. In other aspects, the target nuclide is 98Mo, and the radionuclide is Mo that decays to produce 99mTc.

DEMONSTRATION OF A DATA-DRIVEN PHYSICS-BASED APPROACH FOR COMPUTATIONALLY EFFICIENT CFD PREDICTION OF TWO-PHASE BUBBLY FLOW

To realize efficient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) prediction of two-phase flow, a multi-scale physics-guided data-driven approach, Feature Similarity Measurement (FSM) technique was developed for error estimation in two-phase flow simulation using coarse-mesh CFD, to achieve a comparable accuracy as fine-mesh simulations with fast-running feature. By defining physics-guided parameters and variable gradients as physical features, FSM has the capability to capture the underlying local patterns in the coarse-mesh CFD simulation. Massive low-fidelity data and respective high-fidelity data are used to explore the underlying information relevant to the main simulation errors and the effects of phenomenological scaling. By learning from previous simulation data, a surrogate model using deep feedforward neural network (DFNN) can be developed and trained to estimate the simulation error of coarse-mesh CFD. In a demonstration case of two-phase bubbly flow, the DFNN model well captured and corrected the unphysical “peaks” in the velocity and void fraction profiles near the wall in the coarse-mesh configuration, even for extrapolative predictions. The research documented supports the feasibility of the physics-guided deep learning methods for coarse mesh CFD simulations which has a potential for the efficient industrial design.

A solution procedure for two- and three-dimensional unsteady viscous flows

An efficient computational procedure for solving three-dimensional unsteady turbulent flows is described. The consistently split Linearized Block Implicit (LBI) scheme is used in conjunction with the QR operator scheme to solve an approximate form of the Navier-Stokes equations in generalized nonorthogonal coordinates employing physical velocity components. As a demonstration calculation the turbulent oscillating flow over a flat plate corresponding to the experiment of Karlsson is considered in both two and three dimensions. New inflow boundary conditions are proposed which yield physically plausible solutions near the upstream boundary. The results obtained agree both qualitatively and quantitatively with Karlsson's data and shed new light on the controversy concerning the interpretation of the skin friction phase angle as a function of reduced frequency.

Flow regimes and storage efficiency of CO 2 injected into depleted shale reservoirs

Depleted shale reservoirs are potentially attractive targets to store carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) as free and adsorbed phases. The time-dependent efficiency factors that depict dynamic storage performance in shale are estimated as a function of key reservoir parameters, shapes of stimulated reservoir volume, and injection scenarios. Efficiency of CO 2 storage and flow regimes are determined dynamically as CO 2 is injected in a depleted shale formation for a time period of 60 years. The most effective reservoir utilization for carbon storage was achieved during the transition from predominant flow in the stimulated reservoir volume to flow into unfractured zones. That transition occurs within first 15–30 years of injection depending on cases considered. The importance of adsorption as a mechanism of storage is determined based on sensitivity, which indicates that the amount of CO 2 stored by adsorption would be on average ~26% of the CO 2 stored as a free phase.

A finite volume method for the calculation of compressible chemically reacting flows

Several efficient pseudo time techniques have been developed for calculating steady state chemically reacting flows. The techniques include the implicit treatment of the chemical source term, point implicit multiple grid accelerator and a constant CFL condition. It turns out that these methods can be viewed as ways of rescaling the equations in time such that all chemical and convective phenomena evolve at comparable pseudo time scales. Consequently the number of iterations needed to solve reacting problems is approximately the same as for non-reacting problems. The techniques are demonstrated for a simple dissociation model and a nontrivial H2 - Air combustion model.

Multigrid Acceleration of Time-Accurate DNS of Compressible Turbulent Flow

An efficient scheme for the direct numerical simulation of 3D transitional and developed turbulent flow is presented. Explicit and implicit time integration schemes for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations are compared. The nonlinear system resulting from the implicit time discretization is solved with an iterative method and accelerated by the application of a multigrid technique. Since we use central spatial discretizations and no artificial dissipation is added to the equations, the smoothing method is less effective than in the more traditional use of multigrid in steady-state calculations. Therefore, a special prolongation method is needed in order to obtain an effective multigrid method. This simulation scheme was studied in detail for compressible flow over a flat plate. In the laminar regime and in the first stages of turbulent flow the implicit method provides a speed-up of a factor 2 relative to the explicit method on a relatively coarse grid. At increased resolution this speed-up is enhanced correspondingly.
