As a part of the DOE NE High Burnup Spent Fuel Data Project, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is performing destructive examinations (DEs) of high burnup (HBU) (>45 GWd/MTU) spent nuclear fuel (SNF) rods from the North Anna Nuclear Power Station operated by Dominion Energy. The SNF rods, called sister rods or sibling rods, are all HBU and include four different kinds of fuel rod cladding: standard Zircaloy-4 (Zirc-4), low-tin Zirc-4, ZIRLO, and M5. LCOC (Levelized Cost of Light-Duty EV Charging Calculator)

This code was developed to calculate the levelized cost of light-duty electric vehicle (EV) charging (LCOC) for the paper "Levelized Cost of Charging Electric Vehicles in the United States" by Borlaug et al.(https://doi.org/10.1016/j.joule.2020.05.013). The calculation takes inputs from a variety of publicly available data sources (e.g., utility tariffs from the Utility Rate Database; EV charging station locations from the Alternative Fuels Data Center; energy price forecasts from the Energy Information Administration) and produces the current LCOC, considering when, where, and how light-duty EVs are recharged. In addition, the lifetime fuel cost savings (LFCS) calculation estimates the discounted fuel cost savings for a new battery EV (BEV) or plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) over a 15-year time horizon using state-level gasoline price and LCOC projections.

Metallic fuel cladding degradation model development and evaluation for BISON

Fuel cladding chemical interaction (FCCI) and coolant cladding chemical interaction (CCCI), both consume stainless-steel cladding in sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs), and effectively degrade cladding mechanical performance through thickness reduction. Therefore, FCCI/CCCI and corresponding cladding degradation models are essential for advanced fuel performance codes, such as BISON, to reliably predict cladding behavior in SFRs. Here, we report the development and implementation efforts for BISON's FCCI/CCCI correlations and cladding degradation models based on U.S. legacy metallic fuel data. The models were evaluated using Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) program X447/A experiment data supported by the ongoing integration project enabling coordinated application of BISON and EBR-II fuel irradiation and physics database (FIPD). Furthermore, the implemented models were demonstrated to improve BISON's capabilities of predicting cladding damage and degradation behavior that is more consistent with post-irradiation examination observations. Additionally, some limitations of current BISON modules are identified, which are to be overcome through the BISON-FIPD integration efforts.

Hybrid electric buses fuel consumption prediction based on real-world driving data

Estimating fuel consumption by hybrid diesel buses is challenging due to its diversified operations and driving cycles. Here, long-term transit bus monitoring data were utilized to empirically compare fuel consumption of diesel and hybrid buses under various driving conditions. Artificial neural network (ANN) based high-fidelity microscopic (1 Hz) and mesoscopic (5–60 min) fuel consumption models were developed for hybrid buses. The microscopic model contained 1 Hz driving, grade, and environment variables. The mesoscopic model aggregated 1 Hz data into 5 to 60-minute traffic pattern factors and predicted average fuel consumption over its duration. The prediction results show mean absolute percentage errors of 1–2% for microscopic models and 5–8% for mesoscopic models. The data were partitioned by different driving speeds, vehicle engine demand, and road grade to investigate their impacts on prediction performance.

The Mechanical Response of High Burnup 17x17 PWR Fuel Rods Under Bending

As a part of the US Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy High Burnup Spent Fuel Data Project, Oak Ridge National Laboratory has performed 4pt-bend tests on a series of 17x17 PWR fuel rods that were discharged with rod average burnups between 50 and 60 GWd/MTU. The rods include four different kinds of fuel cladding: standard Zircaloy-4 (Zirc-4), low-tin (LT) Zirc-4, ZIRLO, and M5. Six rods of each type (combining Zirc-4 and LT Zirc-4 as one type) were tested to failure at room temperature and 200 oC. Three of each type experienced a full-length heat treatment cycle from RT to 400 oC to RT with an 8 hr soak at 400 oC to simulate the expected limiting vacuum drying condition, which potentially induces hydride reorientation and causes some annealing of irradiation damage in the cladding. Overall, the fuel rods show significant capacity to deflect in bending and exhibit non-linear deformation before failing. The calculated failure strains range from 1.5% to 3.8%. The simulated vacuum drying heat treatment had the largest effect on fuel rods with ZIRLO and M5 cladding. In both cases the heat treatment caused increases in the plastic strain at failure, suggesting some annealing of irradiation damage is occurring. The finite element modeling of the 4pt bending test assume the pellet is a collection of pellet wedge pieces. The results for the Zircaloy-4 rods suggest that the pellets are bonded to the cladding and friction controls the relative motion of the pellet wedge pieces.
