Propagator Zeros and Lattice Chiral Gauge Theories

Symmetric mass generation (SMG) has been advocated as a mechanism to render mirror fermions massive without symmetry breaking, ultimately aiming for the construction of lattice chiral gauge theories. It has been argued that in an SMG phase, the poles in the mirror fermion propagators are replaced by zeros. Using an effective Lagrangian approach, we investigate the role of propagator zeros when the gauge field is turned on, finding that they act as coupled ghost states. In four dimensions, a propagator zero makes an opposite-sign contribution to the one-loop beta function as compared to a normal fermion. In two dimensional Abelian theories, a propagator zero makes a negative contribution to the photon mass squared. In addition, propagator zeros generate the same anomaly as propagator poles. Thus, gauge invariance will always be maintained in an SMG phase, in fact, even if the target chiral gauge theory is anomalous, but unitarity of the gauge theory is lost. Soft-collinear gravity beyond the leading power

We construct “soft-collinear gravity”, the effective field theory which describes the interaction of collinear and soft gravitons with matter (and themselves), to all orders in the soft-collinear power expansion. Despite the absence of collinear divergences in gravity at leading power, the construction exhibits remarkable similarities with soft-collinear effective theory of QCD (gauge fields). It reveals an emergent soft background gauge symmetry, which allows for a manifestly gauge-invariant representation of the interactions in terms of a soft covariant derivative, the soft Riemann tensor, and a covariant generalisation of the collinear light-cone gauge metric field. The gauge symmetries control both the unsuppressed collinear field components and the inherent inhomogeneity in λ of the invariant objects to all orders, resulting in a consistent expansion.

Multipartite edge modes and tensor networks

Holographic tensor networks model AdS/CFT, but so far they have been limited by involving only systems that are very different from gravity. Unfortunately, we cannot straightforwardly discretize gravity to incorporate it, because that would break diffeomorphism invariance. In this note, we explore a resolution. In low dimensions gravity can be written as a topological gauge theory, which can be discretized without breaking gauge-invariance. However, new problems arise. Foremost, we now need a qualitatively new kind of “area operator,” which has no relation to the number of links along the cut and is instead topological. Secondly, the inclusion of matter becomes trickier. We successfully construct a tensor network both including matter and with this new type of area. Notably, while this area is still related to the entanglement in “edge mode” degrees of freedom, the edge modes are no longer bipartite entangled pairs. Instead they are highly multipartite. Along the way, we calculate the entropy of novel subalgebras in a particular topological gauge theory. We also show that the multipartite nature of the edge modes gives rise to non-commuting area operators, a property that other tensor networks do not exhibit.

Target space entanglement in Matrix Models

We study target space entanglement in gauged multi-matrix models as models of entanglement between groups of D-branes separated by a planar entangling surface, paying close attention to the implementation of gauge invariance. We open with a review of target space entanglement between identical particles, which shares some important features (specifically a gauged permutation symmetry) with our main problem. For our matrix models, we implement a gauge fixing well-adapted to the entangling surface. In this gauge, we map the matrix model problem to that of entanglement of a U(1) gauge theory on a complete or all-to-all lattice. Matrix elements corresponding to open strings stretching across the entangling surface in the target space lead to interesting contributions to the entanglement entropy.

Gauge-symmetrization method for energy-momentum tensors in high-order electromagnetic field theories

For electromagnetic field theories, canonical energy-momentum conservation laws can be derived from the underpinning spacetime translation symmetry according to the Noether procedure. However, the canonical energy-momentum tensors (EMTs) are neither symmetric nor gauge-symmetric (gauge invariant). The Belinfante-Rosenfeld (BR) method is a well-known procedure to symmetrize the EMTs, which also renders them gauge symmetric for first-order field theories. High-order electromagnetic field theories appear in the study of gyrokinetic systems for magnetized plasmas and the Podolsky system for the radiation reaction of classical charged particles. For these high-order field theories, gauge-symmetric EMTs are not necessarily symmetric and vice versa. In the present study, we develop a new gauge-symmetrization method for EMTs in high-order electromagnetic field theories. The Noether procedure is carried out using the Faraday tensor $F_{μν}$, instead of the 4-potential $A_{μ}$, to derive a canonical EMT $T^{μν}_{N}$. We show that the gauge-dependent part of $T^{μν}_{N}$ can be removed using the displacement-potential tensor $F^{σμν}$ ≡ $D^{σμ}A^{ν}/4π$, where $D^{σμ}$ is the antisymmetric electric displacement tensor. This method gauge-symmetrizes the EMT without necessarily making it symmetric, which is adequate for applications not involving general relativity. For first-order electromagnetic field theories, such as the standard Maxwell system, $F^{σμν}$ reduces to the familiar BR superpotential $S^{σμν}$, and the method developed can be used as a simpler procedure to calculate $S^{σμν}$ without employing the angular momentum tensor in 4D spacetime. When the electromagnetic system is coupled to classical charged particles, the gauge-symmetrization method for EMTs is shown to be effective as well.

Parton distribution function for topological charge at one loop

We present results for the gg-part of the one-loop corrections to the recently introduced “topological charge” GPD F~(x, q 2 ). In particular, we give expression for its evolution kernel. To enforce strict compliance with the gauge invariance requirements, we have used on-shell states for external gluons, and have obtained identical results both in Feynman and light-cone gauges. No “zero mode” δ(x) terms were found for the twist-4 gluon GPD F~(x, q 2 ).

One-loop structure of parton distribution for the gluon condensate and “zero modes”

We present results for one-loop corrections to the recently introduced “gluon condensate” PDF F(x). In particular, we give expression for the gg-part of its evolution kernel. To enforce strict compliance with the gauge invariance requirements, we have used on-shell states for external gluons, and have obtained identical results both in Feynman and light-cone gauges. No “zero mode” δ(x) terms were found for the twist-4 gluon PDF F(x). However a q 2 δ(x) term was found for the ξ = 0 GPD F(x, q 2 ) at nonzero momentum transfer q. Overall, our results do not agree with the original attempt of one-loop calculations of F(x) for gluon states, which sets alarm warning for calculations that use matrix elements with virtual external gluons and for lattice renormalization procedures based on their results.

Lattice regularization of reduced Kähler-Dirac fermions and connections to chiral fermions

We show how a path integral for reduced Kähler-Dirac fermions suffers from a phase ambiguity associated with the fermion measure that is an analog of the measure problem seen for chiral fermions. However, unlike the case of chiral symmetry, a doubler free lattice action exists which is invariant under the corresponding onsite symmetry. This allows for a clear diagnosis and solution to the problem using mirror fermions resulting in a unique gauge invariant measure. By introducing an appropriate set of Yukawa interactions which are consistent with ’t Hooft anomaly cancellation we conjecture the mirrors can be decoupled from low energy physics. Moreover, the minimal such Kähler-Dirac mirror model yields a light sector which corresponds, in the flat space continuum limit, to the Pati-Salam GUT model.

Anomalous dimensions from gauge couplings in SMEFT with right-handed neutrinos

Standard Model Neutrino Effective Field Theory (SMNEFT) is an effective theory with Standard Model (SM) gauge-invariant operators constructed only from SM and right-handed neutrino fields. For the full set of dimension-six SMNEFT operators, we present the gauge coupling terms of the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for renormalization group evolution (RGE) of the Wilson coefficients between a new physics scale and the electroweak scale. We find that the SMNEFT operators can be divided into five subsets which are closed under RGE. Our results apply for both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. We also discuss the operator mixing pattern numerically and comment on some interesting phenomenological implications.

Anomaly inflow, dualities, and quantum simulation of Abelian lattice gauge theories induced by measurements

Previous work [] has demonstrated that quantum simulation of Abelian lattice gauge theories (Wegner models including the toric code in a limit) in general dimensions can be achieved by local adaptive measurements on symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states with higher-form generalized global symmetries. The entanglement structure of the resource SPT state reflects the geometric structure of the gauge theory. In this work we explicitly demonstrate the anomaly inflow mechanism between the deconfining phase of the simulated gauge theory on the boundary and the SPT state in the bulk by showing that the anomalous gauge variation of the boundary state obtained by bulk measurement matches that of the bulk theory. Moreover, we construct the resource state and the measurement pattern for the measurement-based quantum simulation of a lattice gauge theory with a matter field (Fradkin-Shenker model), where a simple scheme to protect gauge invariance of the simulated state against errors is proposed. We further consider taking an overlap between the wave function of the resource state for lattice gauge theories and that of a parameterized product state, and we derive precise dualities between partition functions with insertion of defects corresponding to gauging higher-form global symmetries, as well as measurement-induced phases where states induced by a partial overlap possess different (symmetry-protected) topological orders. Measurement-assisted operators to dualize quantum Hamiltonians of lattice gauge theories and their noninvertibility are also presented. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Choice of gauge in 2-photon 1s-2s transition in atomic hydrogen and pseudostate expansions

The problem of gauge choice in multiphoton transitions in connection with the proper choice of the unperturbed wave functions require to insure gauge invariance was considered. J. Bassani, J. J. Forney, and A. Quattropani considered the case of 2-photon 1s-2s transition rate for hydrogen, using gauges vector E x vector r and vector A x vector p. Exactly the same results were obtained for the two gauges, but the findings indicate that the vector E x vector r interaction tends to the final result with a small number of intermediate states and is therefore the one to be used in any approximate calculation. Whether the so-called pseudostate expansion method works equally well with either gauge was tested. To accomplish this task, in addition to researching the problem, the FORTRAN programming was learned and a FORTRAN program was constructed for the calculation of the dimensionless 2-photon transition probability amplitude D(v) for 1s-2s transition in Hydrogen as a function as a function of the incident photon frequency v in gauge vector E x vector p at certain values of v, using the pseudostate method. However, some puzzling unresolved difficulties were experienced in the calculation. Then should the pseudostate calculations prove successful for gauge vector E x vector r the method will be applied to gauge vector A x vector p. If successful, then the problem is complete.

Exploring non-invertible symmetries in free theories

Symmetries corresponding to local transformations of the fundamental fields that leave the action invariant give rise to (invertible) topological defects, which obey group-like fusion rules. One can construct more general (codimension-one) topological defects by specifying a map between gauge-invariant operators from one side of the defect and such operators on the other side. In this work, we apply such construction to Maxwell theory in four dimensions and to the free compact scalar theory in two dimensions. In the case of Maxwell theory, we show that a topological defect that mixes the field strength F and its Hodge dual *F can be at most an SO(2) rotation. For rational values of the bulk coupling and the θ-angle we find an explicit defect Lagrangian that realizes values of the SO(2) angle φ such that cos φ is also rational. We further determine the action of such defects on Wilson and ’t Hooft lines and show that they are in general non-invertible. We repeat the analysis for the free compact scalar Φ in two dimensions. In this case we find only four discrete maps: the trivial one, a Z 2 map dΦ → –dΦ, a Τ-duality-like map dΦ → i • dΦ, and the product of the last two.

Effective field theory of stochastic diffusion from gravity

Planar black holes in AdS have long-lived quasinormal modes which capture the physics of charge and momentum diffusion in the dual field theory. How should we characterize the effective dynamics of a probe system coupled to the conserved currents of the dual field theory? Specifically, how would such a probe record the long-lived memory of the black hole and its Hawking fluctuations? We address this question by exhibiting a universal gauge invariant framework which captures the physics of stochastic diffusion in holography: a designer scalar with a gravitational coupling governed by a single parameter, the Markovianity index. We argue that the physics of gauge and gravitational perturbations of a planar Schwarzschild-AdS black hole can be efficiently captured by such designer scalars. We demonstrate that this framework allows one to decouple, at the quadratic order, the long-lived quasinormal and Hawking modes from the short-lived ones. It furthermore provides a template for analyzing fluctuating open quantum field theories with memory. In particular, we use this set-up to analyze the diffusive Hawking photons and gravitons about a planar Schwarzschild-AdS black hole and derive the quadratic effective action that governs fluctuating hydrodynamics of the dual CFT. Along the way we also derive results relevant for probes of hyperscaling violating backgrounds at finite temperature.

Gluon pseudo-distributions at short distances

We present the results that are necessary in the ongoing lattice calculations of the gluon parton distribution functions (PDFs) within the pseudo-PDF approach. We identify the two-gluon correlator functions that contain the invariant amplitude determining the gluon PDF in the light-cone z^2 \to 0 z 2 → 0 limit, and perform one-loop calculations in the coordinate representation in an explicitly gauge-invariant form. Ultraviolet (UV) terms, which contain \ln (-z^2) ln ( − z 2 ) -dependence cancel in the reduced Ioffe-time distribution (ITD), and we obtain the matching relation between the reduced ITD and the light-cone ITD. Using a kernel form, we get a direct connection between lattice data for the reduced ITD and the normalized gluon PDF.

Topological Gauge Actions on the Lattice as Overlap Fermion Determinants

Overlap fermion on the lattice has been shown to properly reproduce topological aspects of gauge fields. In this paper, we review the derivation of Overlap fermion formalism in a torus of three space-time dimensions. Using the formalism, we show how to use the Overlap fermion determinants in the massless and infinite mass limits to construct different continuum topological gauge actions, such as the level-k Chern–Simons action, “half-CS” term and the mixed Chern–Simons (BF) coupling, in a gauge-invariant lattice UV regulated manner. Taking special Abelian and non-Abelian background fields, we demonstrate numerically how the lattice formalism beautifully reproduces the continuum expectations, such as the flow of action under large gauge transformations.

Shadow sectors of gauge theories

We show that both abelian and non-abelian gauge theories admit configurations in which the fields behave as if in the presence of static charge densities, or “shadow charges”. These correspond to nontrivial initial conditions for the fields that generate gauge transformations, the Gauss’ law operators. In non-abelian theories, such configurations seem to demand additional physical fields with exactly static charge densities. In contrast with this expectation, we show that gauge theory alone provides a consistent and gauge-invariant description of shadow charges. Canonical quantization then yields continuous shadow charges for abelian theories and quantized ones for non-abelian theories. In general, our findings indicate that all local conservation laws give rise to gauge symmetries, even in the presence of second-class constraints.

Monomer-dimer tensor-network basis for qubit-regularized lattice gauge theories

Traditional SU⁡(𝑁) lattice gauge theories (LGTs) can be formulated using an orthonormal basis constructed from the irreducible representations (irreps) 𝑉 𝜆 of the SU⁡(𝑁) gauge symmetry. On a lattice, the elements of this basis are tensor networks comprising dimer tensors on the links labeled by a set of irreps {𝜆 ℓ } and monomer tensors on sites labeled by {𝜆 𝑠 }. These tensors naturally define a local site Hilbert space, ℋ$^𝑔_𝑠$, on which gauge transformations act. Gauss’s law introduces an additional index 𝛼 𝑠 =1,2,…,𝒟⁡(ℋ$^𝑔_𝑠$) that labels an orthonormal basis of the gauge-invariant subspace of ℋ$^𝑔_𝑠$. This monomer-dimer tensor-network (MDTN) basis, |{𝜆 𝑠 },{𝜆 ℓ },{𝛼 𝑠 }⟩, of the physical Hilbert space enables the construction of new qubit-regularized SU⁡(𝑁) gauge theories that are free of sign problems while preserving key features of traditional LGTs. Here, we investigate finite-temperature confinement-deconfinement transitions in a simple qubit-regularized SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theory in 𝑑 =2 and 𝑑 =3 spatial dimensions, formulated using the MDTN basis, and show that they reproduce the universal results of traditional LGTs at these transitions. Additionally, in 𝑑 =1, we demonstrate using a plaquette chain that the string tension at zero temperature can be continuously tuned to zero by adjusting a model parameter that plays the role of the gauge coupling in traditional LGTs.

Supercurrents and (partial) supersymmetry in adjoint QCD 2 and its generalizations

1 + 1-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory coupled to an adjoint Majorana fermion, also known as adjoint QCD 2 , has the surprising feature that at fermion mass $\sqrt{\frac{g^2N}{2\pi }}$ it exhibits supersymmetry. In this paper, we obtain a deeper insight into how the supersymmetry works by constructing the gauge invariant, Lorentz covariant supercurrent j μA . Its conservation relies crucially on the presence of a quantum anomaly. We generalize this construction to a class of models where, in addition to an adjoint Majorana fermion of an appropriate mass, the gauge theory is coupled to some collection of massless fermions (SU(N) may be replaced by a more general gauge group). In general, these models have a supersymmetric massive sector and a non-supersymmetric CFT sector [1], but there are cases in which both sectors are supersymmetric. An example of such a gapless, fully supersymmetric model is SU(N) gauge theory coupled to three adjoint Majorana fermions, of which two are massless and the third has mass $\sqrt{\frac{3{g}^2N}{2\pi }}$.
