Aggregation-induced phosphorescence sensitization in two heptanuclear and decanuclear gold–silver sandwich clusters

The strategy of aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) has been proven to be efficient in wide areas and has recently been adopted in the field of metal nanoclusters. Furthermore, the relationship between atomically precise clusters and AIEE is still unclear. Herein, we have successfully obtained two few-atom heterometallic gold–silver hepta-/decanuclear clusters, denoted Au 6 Ag and Au 9 Ag, and determined their structures by X-ray diffraction and mass spectrometry. The nature of the AuI…AgI interactions thereof is demonstrated through energy decomposition analysis to be far-beyond typical closed-shell metal–metal interaction dominated by dispersion interaction. Furthermore, a positive correlation has been established between the particle size of the nanoaggregates and the photoluminescence quantum yield for Au 6 Ag, manifesting AIEE control upon varying the stoichiometric ratio of Au : Ag in atomically-precise clusters.

Optical tags comprising rare earth metal-organic frameworks

Optical tags provide a way to identify assets quickly and unambiguously, an application relevant to anti-counterfeiting and protection of valuable resources or information. The present invention is directed to a tag fluorophore that encodes multilayer complexity in a family of heterometallic rare-earth metal-organic frameworks (RE-MOFs) based on highly connected polynuclear clusters and carboxylic acid-based linkers. Both overt (visible) and covert (near infrared, NIR) properties with concomitant multi-emissive spectra and tunable luminescence lifetimes impart both intricacy and security. Tag authentication can be validated with a variety of orthogonal detection methodologies. The relationships between structure, composition, and optical properties of the family of RE-MOFs can be used to create a large library of rationally designed, highly complex, difficult to counterfeit optical tags.

Reversible CO 2 Hydrogenation, Neutron Crystallography, and Hydride Reactivity of a Triiridium Heptahydride Complex

Here, the authors report the structure, reactivity, and catalytic utility of a triiridium complex, [Ir 3 H 6 (μ 3 -H)(PN) 3 ] 2+ (2-H, PN = (2-pyridyl)CH 2 PBu t 2 ). Despite its unusual stability to unsaturated organics, electrophiles, and even CF 3 SO 3 D, they find that complex 2-H catalyzes hydrogenation of CO 2 to formate (TON Ir = 9600) and reverse formic acid dehydrogenation (TON Ir = 54 400). The hydrogenation operates via a reactive intermediate [Ir 3 H 4 (μ-H) 4 (PN) 3 ] + (5). Neutron crystallography and DFT-supported neutron vibrational spectroscopy of 2-H reveal Ir─H bond lengths and elucidate the vibration modes within the Ir 3 H 7 core. Stoichiometric oxidation of 2-H produces four classes of iridium complexes of varied nuclearity and hydride structure: tetra- and pentanuclear clusters [Ir 3 H 6 (μ 3 -AuPPh 3 )(PN) 3 ] 2+ (2-Au) and [Ag{Ir 2 H 4 (μ-OAc)(PN) 2 } 2 ] 3+ (6) are generated using AuPPh 3 + and AgOAc, respectively. Further oxidation to class [Ir 2 H 3 (μ-X) 2 (PN) 2 ] + is possible with AgOAc, Hg(OAc) 2 , or I 2 . Finally, a TEMPO/HCl system completely oxidizes the hydrides and gives [Ir 2 Cl 4 (μ-Cl) 2 (PN) 2 ] (11).

Accessing Lanthanide-to-Lanthanide Energy Transfer in a Family of Site-Resolved [Ln III Ln III '] Heterodimetallic Complexes

The ligand H 3 L (6-[3-oxo-3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)propionyl]pyridine-2-carboxylic acid), which exhibits two different coordination pockets, has been exploited to engender and study energy transfer (ET) in two dinuclear [Ln III Ln III '] analogues of interest, [EuYb] and [NdYb]. Their structural and physical properties have been compared with newly synthesised analogues featuring no possible ET ([EuLu], [NdLu], and [GdYb]) and with the corresponding homometallic [EuEu] and [NdNd] analogues, which have been previously reported. Photophysical data suggest that ET between Eu III and Yb III does not occur to a significant extent, whereas emission from Yb III originates from sensitisation of the ligand. In contrast, energy migration seems to be occurring between the two Nd III centres in [NdNd], as well as in [NdYb], in which Yb III luminescence is thus, in part, sensitised by ET from Nd. This study shows the versatility of this molecular platform to further the investigation of lanthanide-to-lanthanide ET phenomena in defined molecular systems.

Revealing the Influence of Diverse Secondary Metal Cations on Redox-Active Palladium Complexes

Incorporation of redox-inactive metals into redox-active complexes and catalysts attracts attention for engendering new reactivity modes, but this strategy has not been extensively investigated beyond the first-row of the transition metals. In this report the isolation and characterization of the first series of heterobimetallic complexes of palladium with mono-, di-, and tri-valent redox-inactive metal ions are reported. A Reinhoudt-type heteroditopic ligand with a salen-derived [N 2 ,O 2 ] binding site for Pd and a crown-ether-derived [O 6 ] site has been used to prepare isolable adducts of the Lewis acidic redox-inactive metal ions (M n+ ). Comprehensive data from single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveal distinctive trends in the structural properties of the heterobimetallic species, including an uncommon dependence of the Pd … M distance on Lewis acidity. The reorganization energy associated with reduction of the heterobimetallic species is strongly modulated by Lewis acidity, with the slowest heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics associated with the strongest incorporated Lewis acids. This hitherto unexplored reorganization energy penalty for electron transfer contrasts with prior thermodynamic studies, revealing that kinetic parameters should be considered in studies of reactivity involving heterobimetallic species.
